I am left handed. I started playing guitar and bass at 14. I decided to play right handed guitars because I wanted access to more options and the ability to play my friends' guitars on occasion. I believe that when you are starting out you really can't play the guitar anyway and it requires training and practice. So you can learn it either way with about the same effort. You have a few months of awkwardness to over come regardless of being lefty or righty. So the practical solution is go righty. I don't regret learning righty for a second.
When I started music in jr high school I wanted to play saxophone but was discouraged and given a trombone (a truly right handed instrument). I never really had a passion for trombone, but learned to play it anyway. Later, I was interested in guitar and took some lessons (righty) and soon discovered a passion for bass. Learning an instrument takes a lot of practice and dedication from the student. It is important to encourage that discipline, because it is easy to just give up if you are being frustrated too often. Side note: I am not sure why the common guitar configuration is call righty anyway. The left hand is on the fretboard. I am sure there is a reason for this convention, but it seems sort of backwards to me.

I miss my '97 G&L ASAT III. Best guitar I've ever owned (particularly for the price). Agreed that G&L is super underrated. I think their resale is getting better. I'm stalking Reverb all the time. Being lefty, G&L Fullterton vs. Fender Mod shop, Fender is $400 more... not to mention the pickups I replaced. It's the only way you're going to get something that isn't white, black, red, 3-color or whatever flavor of 'blue' they offer for the year. I've got the Fender and next purchase is definitely a G&L Fullerton-made. I have a G&L import ASAT Bluesboy, and it's one of the good ones. Great finish and no flaws. - On the lefty subject. I tried to learn to play right handed for 3 years. It wasn't a go... 30 years later, getting my daughter into guitar, lefty she is. At least she'll start with a good collection of left handed guitars. :)

I'm a lefty who plays guitar righty. I can't really say one way or the other if I'm playing the way I should be. But my brain tells me that fretting with my more coordinated hand makes more sense.
The main reason I play righty is because my mom had a right handed guitar, and it's all I ever knew.

Righty here. I think there's so much muscle memory involved that after being intensely in love with the darn thing a few years you've developed specific tasks for each hand you could never do had you not. just watch a newbie coming to 'grips' for a while, you'll appreciate how far you've come.

You can learn just about anything with either hand with enough practice. Using a sports example, both LeBron James and Russell Westbrook are left-handed. Learning to play with their less dominant hand worked out alright for them.

While G&L is being talked about, to me G&L says Leo Fender. They are the last designs that Leo & George put their hands on. All Leo sold to CBS was his name and that's what they passed on. Fender after CBS were great guitars and I guess they tweaked the models and made them better but Leo and George took G&L to where Fender would have gone if Leo hadn't sold the company.

Phil, I just ran across this video and only looked at the guitar is hard to play link. I never knew that the D key is between the two black keys. I have a piano but I am a guitarist. One of the hard parts of a guitar is that when you look at middle C on a music sheet, it is only one key on the piano. On the guitar it is 3rd fret on the A string but also the 8th fret on the E string. That makes it hard. Have a nice day.

Hey Phil, I had an Epiphone LP pickup that was cutting in an out as well. Because of the plug-in connections in the cavity, I could swap the pickups at the pots to rule in or out the pickup vs the switch/pots/connections. In my case the pickup was the problem. I ended up putting a Darkmoon set of pickups and wiring harness like your Epiphone Sharpen-My-Axe vid; as well as Graphtech nut, tuners, bridge and tailpiece. Came out great. If you want the old pickups to take apart for a vid or something, let me know where to send them and I'll get them on the way.

Dammit I need to take a break from Phil's videos for awhile now. Now I've started getting that familiar twinge of "want/need" for a G&L. I have a new Fender Classic 60's Strat on the way to me right now (scored one of the remaining rosewood finger board models in lake placid blue), I can't afford paying for a second new guitar before I even receive the first one....or can I? totally agree except I got the ok this time, so Im shopping this weekend. I have learned that you have to buy what you play, I don't even count ordering a custom one. Regarding G&L, I remember ordering my Fender Select Strat, and then going to a store and trying out a G&L Tribute Legacy. This guitar was every bit as good (in my mind) as the Fender three times the price. I'm still very happy with my Strat, but I know I would have been just as happy with the Legacy, and it wasn't even built in the California factory, except the hardware. Now that Anderton's and other retailers are ordering more G&Ls, we're going to see more of them out there.

I'm lefty (and the clap test proves it). I started on guitar and bass right handed at 13, because in the late 70s, it was almost impossible find a left handed instrument in those pre-Internet days. Most lefties I know in my age group have the same story. I actually think that having my dominant hand as the fretting hand has resulted in having a more developed vibrato technique than most of the naturally right handed players I know.
A few years ago, I had some nerve damage on my left side, so I switched to playing guitar left handed while I was healing and can now play both handed, although I'm not nearly as accomplished as a lefty player. The hardest part after the initial struggle to gain dexterity was trying to retrain my brain when moving up and down the neck. If you are playing right handed, you automatically move your fretting hand left to go down the neck and right to go up it. If you switch to left handed, your brain still tells your hands to move in the same (wrong) direction.
There are actually some decent but cheap lefties for beginners. There are some decent Squiers and Epiphones for around $200 or so. Rondomusic also sells some decent off-brand guitars made in South Korea, although their pickings currently seem little slim. I probably wouldn't gig with these guitars on a regular basis, be you get a decent sound, playability, and they stay in tune, which are the primary needs for someone playing guitar.

If I wasn‘t sure if my daughter should get a lefty or righty guitar, I‘d probably buy 2 (affordable) of the same short scale model, a righty and a lefty. Or lend a guitar from friends and buy one (same model) for the other hand. So she can decide herself what‘s the best option, and/or try if she’s comfortable enough with a right handed.

I’m not careless but I had 2 little mishaps now it’s 2weeks old and damaged. I emailed MK and they have ignored me, I didn’t expect it to be so fragile, its a guitar!! Also poor customer support. It’s like having a guitar made from glass.

37:50 Cort makes decent instruments, but I'll never buy from them. There are enough videos out there how shitty they treat their workers and what they think are health&safety regulations. They have that reputation for a long time and they go wherever it is cheaper to produce and where the regulations are lax. They took a huge dump on the korean factory workers they had for 20 years. They had enough and protested for better working conditions a few years ago and they moved the factory. Not able to go to the bathroom, no breaks. Got complaints? You're fired! Lots of disabled people that slaved away for decades, lots of "industrial accidents" with lost limbs (no kidding), some with horrible chronic lung problems (no real safety gear). They were fined in korea for the horrible working conditions. Instead of having the regular safety investigations, Cort payed for their own investigation and everything was A-OK.^^There are well running, humane factories in China, Korea and Japan. I rather buy from someone else. If you buy Fender, G&L, Ibanez, Gibson...make sure they're not made by cort/cor-tek. I personally like guitars where the workers don't set themselves on fire. if you buy G&L, buy the fullerton build ones.

onpsxmember, seems that when the Korean workers formed a Trade Union, they were basically locked out of the factory! Suffice to say i wont be buying any of there guitars anytime soon

    • @onpsxmember
      @onpsxmember 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Indeed. They were sitting and they couldn't do anything. They formed the union in 2006 and and 2007 a lot of BS happened. But BS started waaay earlier. They told the employees that the company was doing bad financially which made the worker work harder and they tried to save every bit of scrap wood, being extra efficient. They talked crap, since they were highly profitable back then. They trained the indonesian workers and when they came back from the department rotation their job was gone. They didn't just fool the workers but even tried to get money from the state at the same time. They got a lot of influence since they pretty damn big in south korea. People who joined the union got told they would be rehired if the sign a resignation document and all that crap with cherry on top. One worker set himself on fire around that time. In 2012 the highest korean court said it was all okayO.o. That they make less is okay due to the standard of living, but constant abusement while you do really great work sucks balls. Especially the koreans are not the kind of people who protest anything "slightly upsetting". That's on the same level as people jumping out of buildings to land in nets to put together another apple product...which doesn't mean it's better from other companies. Samsung employees get leukemia, MS and other shit by the wafer process chemicals.
Some talk about the industrial revolution and that those years also happened in the west. The difference is that they all use modern machines and are just too horny for their profit to care about their people. In a modern plant, you should have a damn good chance to become a healthy 40 year old person.
There are lots of reasons to go to indonesia as a musical instrument company, but cort mentioned in an old removed? deleted? just old?) interview from entrepreneur of 98 that they the unions where one of the reasons they thought about moving to indonesia. The main reasons are the basically non existing taxes for exporting goods to the United States from Indonesia, most of the wood directly in front of your door and tons of willing employees that are used to switch jobs. The quality and quality control is good and I think at least the new factories from cort could be a better than the old ones in korea. Some might say cort is just one example of many, but they had so many working accidents that people were forced to investigate. How much do you have to fuck with workers that they protest for several years and travel to music fairs to tell the people abroad how the people suffer to make their cheap instruments cause at home nobody cares. (cort exports 95% of the instruments) Atm, I'd like to know who makes all the Harley Benton instruments in China.

    • @onpsxmember
      @onpsxmember 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Glad it's appreciated. I was just rambling on cause I stumbled over it multiple times. First at a guitar store from someone who imports the instruments and later on fairs and online. What is the answer? Under what conditions do competitors produce? (I'd like to know where HB order their guitars in China) Maybe just buy less guitars, build them yourself or buy used ones? I don't know. Those unhealthy hard workers need to have some kind of work..it gets more complex thinking about it. I don't really have a clue how our comfortable life weighs in to the abuse of foreign workers while in the long run improving their standard of living by making them a production spot. Hope your rickenbacker is one that works for you.

Having worked for manufacturers for 20+ years I will tell you it is not "running the machine too fast" that causes crap to reach market, the QA inspection process is not supposed to change based on volume, what happens is QA is intentionally scaled back to meet the projected (often promised) output numbers. Few people will straight up tell you that, but it is the truth. Accountants and shareholders do not care about quality they care about numbers.

Why is it only guitar where the righty/lefty think comes up? You can't roll in the music store and ask for a left handed piano or clarinet. Hey Phil, I think you meant to say "natural" instead of "whole" notes. There are different schools of music in the world but I've never really heard the white keys all being whole notes or whole steps either for that matter considering the white keys are the notes in the key of C major and there is a half step between E and F and B and C, in case you were thinking of whole steps. 1:15:06 "Righties are playing lefty" Hmm... only if you only use a pick and never work on your picking hand technique. Many of the key skills required for the picking/strumming hand benefit from the fine motor skills typically developed by the primary hand. Finger picking, pick harmonics, subtle changes to attack and dynamics are all easier to learn with your dominant hand.

  • @BAMozzy69

Pronounced BAM-Ozzy (like Ozzy Osbourne). It annoys me that people blame PRS (or any other manufacturer) for set-up issues when purchasing - whether that be with their own made guitars or their 'cheaper' import range. There is a LOT of potential for things to happen to a guitar once it leaves a factory after being Quality Checked and set-up.
The guitar may well have been re-set-up in the store by a retailer to their preference. It may have been in the store for months on display and customers messed with it whilst trying it out. Maybe asked the store to change the set-up or messed with it themselves.
Point is, all that the factory checks ensure is that the guitar was set-up and cleared to go to distributors on that date and a LOT can change from that time to the time a customer buys it. I know when I have bought guitars online, the Store has done a check, string replacement and set-up before it gets handed to me. There is no guarantee that their techs are setting the guitar according to the manufacturers specs or to their own specs or even do a proper set-up and inspection in some cases - just pack and send but could have been messed with by numerous customers who tried it in the store. Some customers may not be 'experienced' musicians - especially with low priced guitars as they would be less likely to ask to try a high end instrument.
Of course some guitars may slip through the factory with issues but I expect the majority of guitars with issues come from the people who have handled that guitar since it left the factory!

Speaking to import guitars being set up well, I’m really looking forward to the time where Phil finally gets his hands on a couple Reverend guitars. They’re manufactured in Korea, but hyper-scrutinized before they’re let into the wild. I’ve purchased a couple direct and played a number in showrooms and you can tell how much of a priority it is to them.
Compared to the rehashing of strat/lp body styles, they’re also a company specifically moving designs left of center. When you see a silhouette, you can tell it’s a Reverend. BTW Phil, they’re the only company out their that produces a Meshell Ndegeocello model!

I’ve purchased most of my guitars online & I’ve been pretty lucky, I’ve only had to return one out of about 15-20 over the years.
I think we’d all really want to play the guitar first, but my tastes are really specific and my local stores never have anything close to what I’m looking for.
Here’s my question, (I believe I’ve heard Phillip say this) why do people who always say they have to “play the guitar” before they buy it, feel comfortable special ordering a custom shop guitar that they’ll pay for before ever playing?
I’m not entirely sure what the difference is?
I do understand, if you’re buying a “cheaper” guitar, going through & finding the “best” one, but if you’re ordering a used guitar, that has all the specs you want, how is that different than ordering a “new” guitar to your specs from the builder?
    Thanks!

my Vox AC15HWTV....50th anniversary handwired came with a mix of sovteks, jj's, and one Brimar. It sounded shit, was wildly microphonic...not trusting new Eastern Bloc tubes AT ALL, i put the money into spec tested Mullard NOS that rated as unused, and i put in a Raytheon rectifier.
Now it sings, growls, and sits silently unless i awake it. i am not a good source for what new tubes may be good, because i am unable to find any that i even find passable. i have 2 NOS tube sources and am well set between them. With a studio, i find spending the extra at the beginning costs much less than buying a turd, and spending a fortune on polish.

Dude I'm a 51yr old drummer (over 30yrs playing clubs) and Im sooo ready to "try" and play guitar, I just wanna play some dropped tune stoner rock riffs (lots of fuzz) and I'm thinking about a getting a 25w tube amp and some sort of guitar, but I'm not sure I'll be able to actually play it without getting pissed and give up.. Is it doable? Think I'll be able to at least get some rhythm playing down within 6mos to a year? I'm just afraid of dropping the $ on the gear then getting frustrated and giving up.. is it doable??

The first 3-4 months is basically toughening up your fingers.
Once you learn 5-10 chords, please start learning music theory.
It just takes time and work. Greg Allman said that his brother Dwayne would actually take his guitar to the bathroom.

Totally achievable and you don't even have to use your feet that much compared to your drum kit. Put the amp on a stand cause you don't have your ears on your feet. Warm up your arms and shoulders a little (often underestimated), cut your nails short, otherwise you mess with the fretboard and guitar body. Look up string action at the first fret online, your guitar should be easy to play and not hurtful. If you're not playing barré chords your wrist should NOT be bent. Adjust the strap (choose a padded one and not the "police line" kind) to keep your wrist straight and your shoulders relaxed. Choose a guitar that isn't too heavy and you'll play it more. If you got 30 years behind the kit under your belt, you know lots of guitar players. Go shopping with someone you trust who isn't full of it. Tell him what you want to play and you search for top notch used guitars. Take your time, look for the full package of comfort, feel and looks. For an Amp I'd suggest the the old Roland Cubes. With Stoner rock, you'll go into pedals anyway but imo it should be a guitar with humbuckers. Inform yourself about a good power supply and look for pedal board building videos if you accumulated a few pedals. Learn how to change your strings(don't forget stretching the new strings!) and adjust your guitar to your preferences . It would be the equivalent of a drummer that doesn't tune the drums and knows squat about his kit. I know you mentioned a tube amp, but with all that fuzz, it doesn't really matter. If you check out an amp, always try the clean channel. If you like that tone, there is no problem to shovel some dirt on top. That comes all from the pedals. If you still want one, check out the small Tubemeister from Hughes&Kettner or one of the lunchbox amps from Orange. Always feed your cable through the strap before plugging it in your guitar. It prevents you from unplugging moving around on stage or falling. You feel the yank before it happens. And before all...have fun!

I started in...1989. There was no internet, and I couldn't afford lessons, guitar magazines, or vhs tapes. I just watched MTV. Within a year I could do some basic metal stuff and "play" a few Sabbath riffs. You can definitely do it today with so much free knowledge out there on the internets if you devote some time to it. If you have a decent computer you can even start with a $30 Behringer interface, a VST loader (Blue Cat Patchwork or Cakewalk by Bandlab), and some free VST guitar sims and see if you really want to invest in serious gear later.

Guitar is easier to play these days than it was before the rise of internet and online shopping - think what it was like for the influential players before they could google some tab or order whatever spec guitar they wanted off a builder in another country. It's easy now in all aspects, people just don't want the effort anymore.

I get this comment is old enough to vote but here is my 2-cents...
Phil I'm 53yrs old & started playing guitar in 1979, it is a dog's breakfast of an instrument indeed for all the reasons you mentioned - though a salient important & notable point / fact / guitar theory idea to point out is this...
The Circle of Fifths is on the neck of the guitar (almost, well sorta 70% of it is, kinda...
    F*ckin' co-operate a sec? plz? thanx)... if we change/imagine a 7th string tuned to B
above the E 6th string we have B E A D G B E. On all the open strings if we add a string and bastardize the 1st & 2nd strings then PRESTO!!!
Now we have The Circle of Fifths with the C & F tuned down to B & E for some evil
nasty f*ckin' octopus-sh*t retarded reason when they nailed some steel wires to a wooden plank one day in medieval days when I was a teenager...
You're 100% Right On The Money like Phil X - correctamundo fair-dinkum spot-on, old mate Phil McKnight. Great bloke great channel & sage advice for all stripes of muso's.
Even though you Sir McKnight probably already know this about The Circle of Fifths thing on guitar I just wanted to mention it cos it helped me stop burning them all in the street one day in a cathartic public illegal bonfire complete with amps pedals & sh*t after I saw a little girl in Canada play her cover version of Led Zepp's
'Since I've Been Lovin' You' and this angelic young woman destroys it beggaring belief!
She goes by the name of Ayla Tesler-Mabe - just wt-actual-f*ck? is she even a human being?.. plays like she invented it! jawdropping talent nuances to die for 17yrs old & outrageously far too f*ckin' cool for school - at 17yo! I lost my sh*t in every way shape & form completely when I saw little 17yo lady Ayla DESTROY Jimmy Page like Godzilla ripped Pagey a new one!.. Ayla Tesler-Mabe is a guitar monster.
Others sheilas of note that rock big-time = Tal Wilkenfeld & Millisa Henderson &more.
I've been a rampant lunatic guitarcheologist for decades & this curmudgeonly guitarcheopteryx insists like you say Phil - that guitar is a flamin' flyin' fricasseed atomic sh*t-fight of a thing to play... now where'd I put that Buffet & Crampon Bb clarinet?🤘

I’m originally a sax player. There’s only one way to play each note on sax, so the music has to be written-as it is with other wind instruments-in such a way that it’s both musical and physically playable, working the mouthpiece is also extremely difficult. Piano is more organized, but it’s physically challenging, and there again, there’s only one key for each note.
The only thing that I see as difficult about being a born again musician on guitar 🎸 is that there are so many ways to play any note or chord, and they’re not obvious until you’ve been playing for years and have mastered the fretboard. I think most players haven’t, and yet they can play it anyway. You don’t have to know where all the notes are to play guitar; you don’t need to know theory or even how to read music-unless of course you want to play at a professional level. You can’t get away with that on other instruments.
So I don’t agree that guitar is particularly difficult instrument.
