I’ve used the Boss RV3 Reverb/Delay Pedal for almost 20 years for pedal steel! Not a lot of control over both effects when used together but works well for what I do. Made my life a lot easier! I have two of them! Also have the TC Arena Reverb that I use on fiddle! Love it!
Personally I think Lightening Boy Audio apologized because a bunch of us (your supporters and fans) went over to LBA's facebook page and gave them hell. I think I own a '89 Strat Plus. Years ago, a former student of my guitar teacher was moving across country and was dumping his gear, I bought it for like $3-400. It is black but I replaced the white pickguard, with a gold/bronze-ish one. I was thinking of replacing the pickups with fender 60's single coils, and the SSL-5 in the bridge. I just thought it was a normal Strat that had lace sensor pickups, didn't know Fender made Strats with them.

Rob was jet-lagged. He didn't like the f holes that weren't actually f holes (just holes right through the guitar), and wasn't so keen on the setup on one guitar. But him and Lee have made videos on Reverend guitars before and Rob does really like them
I've checked out so much of your other video series and never had time to watch a podcast but having my coffee this morning I did check this one out. Great content, info...YES. I like this plenty Thank you man :D
I'm not super familiar with Blackstar, although I think the majority of their stuff SOUNDS really good. - As for Norwegian Black Metal and stuff, I suppose they have used anything from Marshalls (though, more in the '90 when there were less Metal-based products) to ENGL and such, which the latter I believe is quite common for Black Metal (although, that trend also seems to have died down in the recent years). - Blackstar is probably also some of the more affordable stuff, cause they have lots of options and almost anything is at least good quality. From smaller combos to heads, and both solid state and valve, to even their pedals. - Heck, they even managed to make their mini battery amps sound good enough. - I sound like an employee or something, but I think they're just doing good stuff, even if it's actually not even my thing.

Just jumping in to comment on SG necks. There are three main SG neck profiles: The 60s slim, slim tapper, and the SG round. There are some other variations, but these are the most widely used. Generally speaking, The reissues and artist models that are modeled after reissues (like the Tweedy) get the 60s slim neck. This is kind of like a Les Paul 60s neck. It's D-shaped, but not extremely thin. It's full and with high shoulders. The SG Standard with the small guard usually gets the Slim Tapper neck, which is a thinner, more flat D-shaped style. This is the thinnest of the three profiles and the one used on the 2017 and 2018 Standards. The SG Standard with the large pick guard has a SG round profile, which is a C-shaped neck with low shoulders. It's similar to a Les paul USA model 50s neck, but thinner (around .80 at the first fret). There are a couple other profiles, like a SG C neck, which are used on limited run models, so not really worth noting further. Like Phil said though, even with the profiles and specs that Gibson lays out, there are variations and tolerances. One 2018 model with a slim tapper neck could have a thickness at the first fret of .79, where the next one off the line could have a thickness of .76.
Owned a Reverend Jetstream 390, good guitar I just never played. Purchased for 450 sold it two years later for 800 so the internet hype is real. They are good guitars.
The thing is, when someone like LB apologises what they really doing is trying to get themselves out of trouble - he wouldn't have apologised until he started getting dis'ed for it. It's like he can bad mouth someone in public for no good reason and it if backfires then he can apologise and fix it, no harm done - to him. That's called wanting to have your cake and eat it too.
Glenn probably says it in about 1/4 of the videos where he bashes bass players: He doesn't hate bass players, but all too often they were the less talented guitarist in the band when they needed a bassist. The crappy guitarist was the guy who doesn't practice, doesn't put money or time into the craft, and in general isn't fun to work with, and none of that changed when he switched to bass so he could stay in the band.
With the Chapman Reverend thing, I don't think Rob was out of order really. All he really criticised was the F hole that goes right through the body and a lack of an ergonomic heel on the neck joint. Chapman has taken a load of flack for saying in every demo "This is a great guitar", yet the moment he doesn't he gets shit for it. Catch 22 much? Or should it be because he has his own guitar company he's no longer allowed an opinion on anyone else's product? Yeah the criticism of the F hole was a bit childish, but the neck heel was more than valid.
Funky Monkey1886 I think the opposition to it was that he didn't just bring up what he didn't like, but rather that seemed to take up the majority of the video, even though he only had 2-3 disliked features, of which most were very subjective things that maybe just weren't made to fit his tastes as a player. It wasn't a very helpful or informative video, even for a Cap and Chap video.
Hey guys I have a 2017 firebird and the knot on it is called a tech toys not I'm not sure exactly what it's made out of but it is self lubricating and it's not junk my guitar it works really well it's fine so I don't know I'd leave it unless it was cut bad
Reference the question: Boss RV6 or TC hall of fame? You had mentioned that you prefer one pedal that has both Rvb. and Dly. and I like that idea as well. I see the Boss RV6 says it has both, but can it do both at the same time? The control knob would lead me to think otherwise??? I have the RV5 (reverb only) and use a JOYO Ironman Time Magic with it to add 'slapback' (I never use any other form of Delay). They sound really good in combination to me, but the convenience of a single pedal on the pedal board would be a bonus. I'm a big fan of your Q&A videos, especially since they have the index. There are always 3 or 4 that are of interest to me, and I probably wouldn't take the time to watch the whole video without the index. Keep up the good work!
In this case it's not that Behringer/Bugera ripped off the Jettenuator, it's just that Jet city's chinese supplier makes these for everyone, there was even a jettenuator around before the jettenuator, there's also a Harley Benton "jettenuator". They are actually supposed to be quite good for the price, load box also, read a written review by a dude that had owned a few attenuators, which were more expensive and this one in his opinion was right up there with the good ones. But yeah for sure behringer does rip off products otherwise, but they do also make good products, their "high end" midas copy mixing consoles (behringer owns Midas now) are apparently great and Meshuggah apparently even use one for touring. But like every company they make crap products and great products..
Thanks for sharing all of this great info with us. One of my guitars has started fretting out on the high e, it was perfect before so I think this is weather related. But before I do anything (including take it to my teacher first) I will use my phone to record what is happening. Seems so obvious, but I would not have thought of doing that.
Blackstar Metal is insane gain dude. I played the HT Studio 20 and was able to get mega heavy tones barely at half gain and was playing Lamb Of God. I haven't played the Metal line, but from what I've heard, they're more voiced as a heavy American 5150 esque thing whereas the others are more in between American and British. If you dig high gain amps, hell yeah man. If you're not super into them, the standard HT line will do you well.
good call on the mini cry baby. it's cooler after you've used a full size, but if you've never used a wah it could be off-putting maybe? I think it sounds great because you can adjust the pass filter internally and switch to med pass filter to take away that high-end harshness of the high pass filter setting (or default like the cry baby original - med pass is apparently like the Hendrix)
The word high pass filter simply refers to a filter that removes bass (it allows the *highs* to *pass* . Low pass is the opposite, medium pass doesn't exist). Crybaby pedals do not do this. They all use a band pass filter, reguarless of which frequency setting you use. Band passes remove the bass and treble, which is what allows a resonant peak to form, causing the filtering "wah" effect as you move the pedal and shift the frequency. The settings adjust which frequencies the band pass will sweep over basically, allowing it to sweep at lower or higher freqs.
43:28 Seems companies like Yamaha can build nice sounding and very playable sub $300 acoustics in their sleep at this point. Hard to say that about many electrics, there are simply more corners to cut: cheap electronics, cheap PUs, bodies made of 20 pieces of wood glued together, etc...
Has anyone noticed that the Egnater Vengeance 4x12 cabinets are now $299 on Sweetwater? I bought a full stack for $598, free shipping... they sound MEAN. Solid Birch ply, and the Egnater branded Celestions are supposedly relabeled G12t-75's. If that's true, these are almost identical to the Marshall 1960s that are going for $1k per cabinet! I might even buy two more...
Hm. I would just disengage the tilt. Straighten the neck and drop the saddles right down. Run a straight edge over the neck and see where it touches the saddles. It should slide over the saddles. If it doesn't then the neck needs a shim, or if you have a tilt neck, operate the tilt.
Totally right about the Runt 20. I had one for a few months. It just didn't do it for me. The clean channel was great but the drive was too much of not a good thing. The BE-OD is a great pedal. Def has that JCM800 aggression. The trick I found witht the BE-OD is to turn down the internal trim pot. It makes the OD more controllable. It had too much gain for me and I play death metal.
If you (not you Phil, the commenter) were thinking that Chapman was thrashing Reverend, you were looking for the drama. Rob Chapman questioned the through faux F-holes on one model for the aesthetic and got push back from Lee. Oooh. Drama. Edit for clarification
Ehh. No. You were looking for it. Chapman was just stating points, not even really complaining. It's pretty easy to tell when someone is unnecessarily bashing a brand or just giving an opinion. To be fair, Phil does it all the time yet no one bashes him for his opinions other than the companies.
Lol ok. I'll land the shuttle when you stop driving it. We'll agree to disagree. If you think he was needlessly berating a guitar then fine, but after watching the video and following them pretty religiously, I think they're just getting to the point where they say screw it. No matter what they say it's a lose-lose. If they praise it, people blame them for shilling to companies to increase sales, if they complain then people say they're trying to talk up their own company. It's silly and I actually feel for them, because they both seem to enjoy doing what they do.
regardless of apologies....i can't think of a single use for the "thunder knob" that i don't already have a less expensive pedal that does what it does (pushing an already overdriven amp) better.
Its funny. Behringer is very open open the copying aspect. I remember reading how the founder use to use old equipment from his buddies, opened it up to repair and was like, "i can make these. The components are simple and cheap. Why is this mixer 5000 dollars?" So the company was founded on making top of the line equipment, more affordable, in a copy. The dame reason your wife hates behringer, is why I like them.
LBA is a pathetic company whose attempt at notoriety backfired. The owner's "apology" was nothing more than a sad attempt to plug the holes in his sinking dingy. Kinda sad really. His arrogance just shines through in that video. AS IF anyone thought there was an ounce of sincerity anywhere in it. We all are tired, we all have stress in our lives... This was not raising a finger in traffic, this was a deliberate attempt at defamation. Back to the dank & dark bottom of the swamp with him and his meh pedals.
Thanks for the explanation about the abrupt ending to the show, I thought I'd done something wrong on my phone! Question - are there people who only watch Chappers just so they can have a dig? Answer - oh most certainly yes there are. I don't understand why he's constantly getting the hate/trolling for having an opinion. I thought he really liked the Reverends and him & Captain thought the 12 string was great. Was I watching the same review?!
Just imagine how this lightning boy guy would handle customer complaints. He would just yell at you for having a problem with his product? Or come to your house and burn a cross in your yard?
I liked the discussion about your amps Phil. I've been loyal to my Hot Rod Deluxe which has been my only amp for the past 12 years. I've been hanging on to my dads Hot Rod Deville for the past year too because I needed it for a gig while mine was being fixed. My amp game is boring guys give me some suggestions, I just found a new job and should reward myself.... Maybe a marshall or vox?? I play rock, blues, and some R&B stuff with a g&l S500, Gibson SG and an Epi ES-339.
A good video idea, all the big power supply units and how they measure up against each other. Like the Yankee, Mondo, and of course the Phoenix. I jumped on a deal for the pigtronix power supply and I can't really tell if I did better the ones mentioned above. If I'm not mistaken the Phoenix offers less than the others (no 18v if I remember correctly)
@Phillip McKnight: Lately I have noticed in the Anderton's videos that when Rob Chapman is reviewing a guitar which is similar in price or quality to his brand that he speaks very little in the videos, and he is much less enthusiastic while playing them. I've noticed this when he reviews guitars that are similar to his brand. For example, if he is reviewing a guitar that is similar in price point to his brand, but the competition's guitar has better options (roasted maple necks) he appears to me to be intentionally not saying anything about if he likes the guitar and why. The Chapman British Standard series are his only guitars that have roasted maple necks and they are $2000 more expensive than the guitar he is reviewing with the roasted maple necks. I first noticed this when Rob and the Captain reviewed the Ibanez AZ guitars. The AZ guitars are amazing, and the Captain seemed very excited, but Rob was very quiet during the video. These are my perceived observations, and Rob could be completely unbiased. However, it's pretty much impossible to not be biased as a human. I can't remember the last video I watched where Rob was hyped about a guitar that wasn't a Chapman guitar.
What? You can use as low of a power amplifier into any speaker, as long as it's rating is above what the amp is putting out. Won't hurt a thing. "Too few watts driving a speaker louder than the amp is capable" makes absolutely no sense. The wattage rating of a speaker is simply how much power it can take, which is how much exertion/movememt and heat it can handle. The speaker efficiency determines how loud a speaker it is per watt, so the wattage that the amp is putting out is responsible for how loud the sound coming from the speakers will be. For example, plugging a cranked 1 watt amp into a super efficient 400 watt 4x12 cabinet cannot hurt a thing. It's impossible. The speakers won't care at all and people do this all the time. As a person who builds amps and always messes with electronics, there's nothing to worry about, as long as you don't use a high power amp into a low watt speaker.
Julian Avolia You know what, everytime I hear that my brain defaults to audio playback land whether home/studio were it is much easier to destroy a pair of speakers trying to play them loudy w/o enough power. My job is in that industry. You're right guitar speakers are designed to play distorted sound and are much harder to destroy.
You should do a 5 things you didn’t know about your wife, yourself and your business video. Also what is you take on specialty picks? On my acoustic I generally play the Dunlop orange. But electricity I found the tone I get out of an English penny and a polished stone. What do you think about this?
Hi Phil ; love watching your streams, please keep em coming..Can you tell me what Fender amp you would use for a Les Paul , i was thinking maybe a Princeton, Vibrolux or Deluxe with 6v6 tubes. I am looking to get a sound similar to Gregor Hilden.(you tube).i think that's his name..All the best from Melbourne , Australia.
Pretty sure the takeaway message on Glenn’s disdain for bass players really is his hatred for those who don’t practice or waste time. Then come into the studio and waste more time, he has mentioned on occasion other useless musicians. But I’m guessing in his experience the majority of them have been bass players, hence why they became the whipping boys of his content. However he will give credit where it’s due, and if it’s not then he’ll let fly. Anyone who paid attention at the end of his “how to prepare for the studio” series will see him in a less ranting light, putting forth his point on the importance of putting time into your craft.
Yeah, I saw a video with Glenn at some event talking to... I think the Music is Win guy, and he said the reason he's so hard on bassists is that metal(the genre Glenn loves) totally relies on a solid bassist to sound truly heavy. He's mad that bad/lazy bassists ruin heavy music.
I did not know Gibson used ppi plastic nuts!?!?! 😮😮 jackson does the same and it blows my mind that anything over 500 bucks would even consider plastic anything 😂
Re: Revered - You didn't miss anything. Rob said a couple of things about the guitars he didn't like and the comment section went apeshit. He said several times how much he liked them, but god forbid he actually critique something.
Setting the knobs on your compressor to get rid of that awful "sissing" when you say or sing something like "Sneaky Snakes". Usable on hardware and VST models.
Lighting Girl Audio just destroyed his credibility and his business. There are 1000's of pedal manufactures out there, when I think about Lighting Boy Audio now I think UNPROFESSIONAL. Why would I buy something from this guy.
Love your channel Phillip, Chappers was bagging on the design of the Reverend Airsonic, and he was a little condescending about the setup on the guitar as well. Which is funny because their guitars are not set up at all from what I understand. The Captain was subtly trying to reign in Chappers criticism. I was a little embarrassed for him to be quite honest, because he sounded a little petty, from my honest opinion. He may have very well just been having some fun with it, but it came across to me as being mean.
he complains about set ups all the time, which I think reflects on the store more than the brand...but still super ironic considering how bad so many of the Chapman's have been. HP42 did a Chapman video where he picked up like 7 different ones ranging from cheapest to most expensive and all of them had multiple problems. Lol. But yeah, I feel bad for the Captain sometimes.
I noticed that Henning took that video down and replaced it with a kind of apology video, but I get the gist of it. Even in the apology HP42 cannot help but be honest. I don't know about Chapman guitars, because I would never play one they are just not my style. I have seen enough videos about them to know that they don't seem ready to go right out of the box.
Was embarrassing. If he was jet lagged and in no fit shape to do a demo, he shouldn't do a demo. He was drinking coffee and making out like he had just arrived from the airport. It's unprofessional and It's rude to Reverend guitars. But he doesn't care, he stuck his tongue through the f-hole. He's a clown.
And everyone has to act like he isn’t the most unbearable, arrogant bastard to be around. He’s David Brent (the original Office) and he doesn’t even know it. I’m just sick of the guy. And he has no problem using people to get to the next level. That’s the absolute worst part.
William Olsen You're right, they are badly setup from the factory. They have many problems. Chapman have lost at least 3 of the first 5 US dealers for that reason. The shops were having to spend time and money to make the instruments right to be sold. RNA and Flipside were 2, I can't remember the other right now. I expect that's why they are now in Guitar Center.
Re the Chapman thing: It's nothing. British sense of humour not translating I fancy. Watched the video and fancied a Reverend myself, so I don't think it could be considered "trashing". Guitars sounded great. Personally I don't like Rob's shredding (I have no idea how good a guitar would be for me as I don't - and never will - shred) but Lee's there for balance so I don't moan about it. Best Anderton's video ever this week though, with Lee's 2 hour interview with Albert Lee - anyone who likes guitar should watch that, Better than most BBC documentaries about music IMHO.
Kind of an abrupt ending there huh? Oh well, you went over an hour so none of us can complain. I only caught the end so Im excited to go back and see if you talked about the Lightning Boy Audio apology video.
I love that you tag the questions in an index so when I can't catch the show live I can hit the highlights! Thanks Phil for being a total pro!
Brian Stewart I second that!
I actually wind up watching longer because I don't get stuck watching things I don't care about and leave. Happens all the time in other videos.
Man....the fact that you index the questions....game changer. Absolutely awesome. Can’t always listen fully & sometimes just aren’t interested in certain questions, etc....so this is just perfect.

Just bought a bass rig today off Craigslist. It was a great deal. Definitely don't forget to look at the bass stuff.
Didn't make it to the live stream but enjoying the recording.
Just snagged a Tweaker 15, so good!!!! Sounds great!
Paid $799 for my Epiphone G1275 (SG) about 7 years ago. I absolutely love & play the hell out of it. It’s signed by Frank Hannon of Tesla!
Re: TC pedals - I just purchased a SCF that has neither true bypass or toneprints. My favorite TC pedal I’ve had.
Hi Phil...a big awesome thank you for your information videos...ive made purchases based on those vids...
Hell no, he would not do that to Glenn. You rock man, think you handle things in an awesome way.
Great Q&A show respect from England
Your show is very informative. Thank you.
It was another great live Q&A. Sorry it ended abruptly but things happen. Have a good one.
i love my breedlove. same battery that came in it and the thing is just amazing.
I’m always at work when you do the live stream. Class act to post his apology and move along.
Those BOSS guys were good at arguing their side it seems. ... Kinda respect that level of self promotion those guys could throw down.
Too many watts almost is never the cause of damaging a speaker. It is almost always too few watts driving a speaker louder then the amp is capable.
Phil... try 2 x 10 cabinets... I love 'em.
I like doublenecks! Lol! Have a great holiday weekend everyone!
I didn't know that TC is now under Behringer. Perhaps that's why they started making cheap stomp boxes?
What time do you guys normally do this?
lol you can hear him Clicking in the background after the video goes down lol
Beat you by a year. Still have my 1990 Japanese Fender 57 reissue strat i bought new. Havent played a better strat and wouldnt trade it for anything!
Do you know what a De - esser for vocals is? I enjoy most of your videos. Rock on!
Setting the knobs on your compressor to get rid of that awful "sissing" when you say or sing something like "Sneaky Snakes". Usable on hardware and VST models.
Thanks nexxy
It's sad but many times, nice guys finish last...
I'm gonna sit right here until he finishes answering the question.
Phil sez "hello"
You Tube cliff hanger
Boss gets it done.
Hey Phil! Loosing weight?
can we ask you questions without being in the stream?
Berhungher SuperFuzz is a Beast. Copy of what??
Must have been the Gov’t!
Lighting Girl Audio just destroyed his credibility and his business.
There are 1000's of pedal manufactures out there, when I think about Lighting Boy Audio now I think UNPROFESSIONAL. Why would I buy something from this guy.
Oh wow. Casual sexism really gives your argument a wealth of credibility.
Remember the discussion about BS sexism in guitar culture from one week ago? You just presented yourself as an exemplar.
33cattt # more like triggered for someone getting called out on their bullshit....
Lighting Girl failed bigtime.
Don't feel bad for Lighting Girl.
5:12 Phil did you just tell us you have a "Tone-floor"?
Lars recorded the blackalbum with sabian hihats
so, is calling it Boo jer a like pronouncing it Pie Zo?
Re the Chapman thing: It's nothing. British sense of humour not translating I fancy. Watched the video and fancied a Reverend myself, so I don't think it could be considered "trashing". Guitars sounded great. Personally I don't like Rob's shredding (I have no idea how good a guitar would be for me as I don't - and never will - shred) but Lee's there for balance so I don't moan about it. Best Anderton's video ever this week though, with Lee's 2 hour interview with Albert Lee - anyone who likes guitar should watch that, Better than most BBC documentaries about music IMHO.
Peter Dillon-Parkin he just didn't like the design with the cut outs, nothing more
He deleted almost all of lightning boy audio social media beside just for his studio.... He took a huge L on this one.
I saw it.
I have a rv6 but i live in Sweden :(
Kind of an abrupt ending there huh? Oh well, you went over an hour so none of us can complain. I only caught the end so Im excited to go back and see if you talked about the Lightning Boy Audio apology video.
abrupt ending???
great wife story!
haha you don't now heat try Australia!
Who cares if he wants to trash Reverend or not trash Reverend, their guitars are horrendous looking.
