I've done this hike in late August which is a good time of year if you want to avoid (or at least minimize snow and ice). There was a little bit of snow and ice on the trail towards the top but not too much. I would not want to do it when it was completely snow covered. The trail is about about 2.5 miles one way but it's steep, expect about a 2000 foot elevation gain. You should be in good shape to do this. Also, as noted, the altitude means less oxygen so factor that in to your hike. The views at the top are excellent on a clear day, so it's worth it.
Fall is a great time to hike Lassen Peak! We do occasionally receive snow dustings this time of year, and of course, the first major snow could arrive at any time. Make sure to pack layers, as the peak can be especially windy and cold compared to the base of the mountain.

what would this hike be like in late September or early October? Would there be snow?
