Climbing Mount Thielsen: The Lightning Rod of the Cascades

- In this video we summit Mt Thielsen. This pointy mountain is known as the lightning rod of the Cascades. The hike is a pretty typical 10 mile round trip up a mountain. The final 50 feet is a bit of a scramble which is fun for climbers, and scary for hikers.

My brother in law and I climbed Thielsen back in the mid 90’s. We had free climbed to the summit as well, and you are correct, going down was a bit more intense than going up. There use to be a large metal canister chained down to the rock. You could unscrew the lid and put in your business card, student ID’s, or anything else you wished. There was a small book and pencil that you could write down your name, where you lived , and the date. I noticed there was folks from all over who wrote in that little book.
It was truly an amazing view from up there. I could see inside Crater Lake, enough to actually see the edge of the water on the south side. It was relatively a clear day, so I could see Diamond Peak, and Mount Bachelor.
One other note. On our way down the trail, while in the timber, I heard a large cat scream. You could tell it was still a distance from us, but it was close enough to make the hairs on your neck stand.
That entire trip was one I never forgot. Though watching your video brought back memories that had faded.
I am glad this brought you some good feelings and memories! Mountains are often very special and spiritual places. It feels like total magic to me when getting towards the top.

Climbed as a kid and had the rangers called after me once my parents found out. Ran into them on the way back down the hill. Love that area.

@@MattCookOregon Yeah pretty much! I still remember the last push, we kept stopping and filming with a camcorder to try to catch the vertical grade.

Thanks for posting with all the right info and facts! We climbed up there in the mid 80's and didn't use a rope on the way up but sacrificed some webbing and did a pull down rappel for the pinnacle.

Back in the day, I hiked to the top of Mt Shasta and Mt Whitney and then capped it off by doing Half Dome on my 40th birthday. I've seen this peak in the distance and I couldn't make it to the top... well done!

Seeing the terrain on video, I understand why a lot of hikers stop at the base of the climb to the top, and why the couple up there used ropes. I'd never free climb that chunk of rocks. I'd not go up at all! Your experience paid off, and you received your well-earned reward. I agree going down can be more dangerous than going up. That's true of a lot of hiking, even less steep areas. I'll stick to those.
Hiking downhill is what gets everyone sore with all the gravity pressure. At the moment something like this is easier for me free climbing than roped. I need to get better with ropes.

Thank you. Had to get the fulgurite. I like doing these mountain guide videos. Running out of Oregon cascades but after that I can find some odd balls like Steens and Stawberry mountain.

@@MattCookOregon we were lucky with the winds, we actually had an incredibly clear Sunday, the windigo fire had smoke blowing north. The following Monday conditions worsened significantly

Fantastic! I climbed Mt Thielsen many years ago as part of my Boy Scout troop, and obviously signed my name on the ledger at the top of the peak. We used ropes for the "last 50 feet" as our guide called it. This brings back many fond memories. Thank you!

I've been to Oregon several times and have never heard of Thielsen. It is a fascinating climb... the top looks quite unstable.
I think it is the most fun to climb with the final 100 feet. Some of the smaller peaks don't get much love. Hood and Three sisters get it all.
I love the mountains of the Cascades! I've seen most all of them from Canada to Mexico... In November of '72 I climbed Mt. St. Helen's. Mount Adams in November of '73!!! Unforgettable!

I'm glad I got to climb this one many years ago. We took a rope, harnesses and a small assortment of gear to make the summit.
Some people climbed without gear but you could tell it was a little nerve racking free climbing it. It was the perfect day to be on the mountain.
I wouldn't do this one without gear personally. Plus rappelling is just plain fun.

Thinking about your describing the changing names of the mountain: I wonder if ever mountains such as these will be able to be returned to their earliest known name.
As the Australians have now done with Uluru, which used to be the much less interesting Ayer's Rock. And as was done with Denali. The first name of this mountain was so interesting in sound and meaning.
Thanks Green Man. It is a challenge to capture everything you want while doing the big hike/climb. That challenge is fun and rewarding to me. I am all for a name change, but fine either way, we can call it what we want. Some names are too established like Mt Hood and will never change.

One thing to remember about this video (and others like it) is that a GoPro ALWAYS makes a climb look at least ten times scarier than it actually is.
Sometimes, maybe usually. But I have seen it make things look easier!

Absolutely. After exploring my whole life so far here, it seems to be endless.
Great job, looking at crater from that angle you can see how when it exploded it vaporized most of the mountain and just a base was left which filled in with water.
Yeah some people say you can see the water in the lake from Thielsen, maybe my eyes are bad.

I have hiked from the Corals near HWY138 along a couple trails, then over the shoulder near Lathrop glacier then into the meadow and over to Cottonwood Creek Falls. You should go, It is amazing to see the other side of Thielsen.
Thank you for your videos. Not being from Oregon, (I live in the state just east of you) my favorite place to shoot the Milky Way (astrophotography) is in S.E. and central Oregon. I’ve shot it at the Alvord Desert, and around Fields Oregon.
There are some great dark skies over there for sure. No good ones in Idaho?
@@MattCookOregon There are a few in south-central Idaho, but you’ll still get a little bit of light loom-where there will be a bit of light on the horizon. Sometimes, it can look good in the composition.

Thanks. I was actually at Thielsen for the eclipse. It had a bunch of snow so was different from the video. We got near the top and got surrounded in clouds for the eclipse, oh well.

Looks like an awesome climb! I'm shopping around for peaks in Oregon to climb, and this one looks like a great one. Looks like the final climb is maybe class 4, so reasonable to do without ropes.

Don’t skip Bailey if you’re in the area already- it’s not a climb but it is really fun particularly the false summit picture window to summit ridge.
I liked bailey cause its one of the only mountains not in wilderness, so I could fly drone from the top.

I’ve climbed it twice- my first summit, and first time was with ropes. Second time was last summer for a solo sunrise summit. Got the summit but too much smoke to see the sunrise. I think my route up was different from yours. I was closer to where that couple climbed up in your video.
Awesome to try both methods. All my climbs there I really like that left route. Seems like free climbers usually go left, ropes go right.

Thanks for doing that dangerous work. I didn't show it but after the first mile there was just piles of dead downed trees. We were thinking oh man this would ignite in a second.

Stop referring to the Cascade Peaks as a "Cascade". The Cascades is a mountain RANGE, not one peak. So weird. And the monotone. Blah.

Actually, James, you’re wrong. Cascade in this case is a proper name and therefore the Cascade Mountain Range is made up of many Cascade Mountains, thus making each one a “Cascade”. It would be WEIRD to refer to it as anything else. Stop trolling and get a life. -Sincerely, The Grammar Police
Can you make it up to the summit and back down without ropes if you're solo with no other hikers around to help you?
This is a matter of opinion. It is possible. I would feel comfortable with that as I have done it so many times. If you go on a weekend there will be other people at least. Be safe. Let me know if I can give any more info.
