I had a related issue. I changed out my plugs, basically for preventative maintenance and actually CREATED this problem. In fact, the problem was so bad that I actually had enough misfires that a check engine light began flashing and the engine computer shut down cylinders. This resulted in a very rough idle. Once the computer reactivated the cylinders, a smooth idle returned. The symptom didn't appear unless I gave it a decent amount of throttle. I've had the exact same problem occur with my previous vehicle. What you feel can sometimes be described as "spark plug blowout" in boosted engines and the problem becomes noticeable when the engine is under boost. What fixed the problem is actually very simple and I should have caught the issue before I installed the new plugs. The spark plug gap on the new plugs was pretty wide, about 0.040 in or so. My previous car would exhibit the symptom when that gap became greater than about 0.038 or so. The fix was to regap the plugs down to about 0.030 or perhaps a little narrower. It really was that simple. After I regapped the plugs for my F150 down to 0.030, the problem went away. So, when you're putting in new spark plugs, make *sure* they all have the appropriate gap and don't just trust that "the factory" will have preset the gap appropriately.
Same issue. I changed my plugs twice. 1st time caused the issue. So I used different (oem) plugs that are supposed to be pre gapped and the issue continued. So annoying. I guess I'll have to check the gap

I have a 2019 Ford Raptor and I've experienced this issue for the past 8- 10k miles. I currently have 56,700 miles on the truck, changed fluids at 51k mile. Initially I thought changing all of the fluids and resetting the computer (disconnecting the battery) would resolve the issue. I accelerate hard from a stop and drive at top speed daily... This first 40k miles I drove 90% highway. Looks like I need to get new plugs!!
I have a 2013 Ford Edge SEL, it is equipped with the 3.5l naturally aspirated ecoboost engine. I have no codes, and I have a stuttering that is worse between 30-50 miles per hour. I also have hesitation if I accelerate beyond 3,ooo rpms. I currently have 78,000 miles on my car and the spark plugs have been changed once already, though I am unsure at what mileage. My plugs already looked fouled and smell like a hint of gasoline, so I know the spark plugs are bad, but the fact that it's primarily hesitating in a specific mph range is alarming to me! I will be replacing the 3 rear coils along with the plugs since I have to remove the intake and numerous other hoses and bolts to access the rear spark plugs/coils. I'll be providing an update AFTER I complete the job.
2016 f150 3.5 eco boost. At 55 a 60k ish miles, I was getting on the fwy 3/4 throttle and the truck started vibrating, check engine light, and misfiring. It smoothed out after a minute. I took it easy and drove home. Took the plugs out and 3 of them had literally melted. I put some iridium plugs in it and im another 60k in and have not had a problem with them. Now the transmission and cam phasers are another story
I’ve had a few of these eco-boost Ford vehicles and I’ve noticed I have to change the spark plugs between every 30,000 to 40,000 miles or I get that stutter my Ford expedition though I did something different. I change the spark plugs and the coils and it’s going on 122,000 miles now and I haven’t had the stutter again.
I had the same issue you described. Changed the plugs like you suggested and…. Problem solved! Thank you so much for the useful information. BTW, I posted at the Ecoboost group on Facebook and linked your video, just in case anyone else has the same issue.
It’s the time. I have a 93 tune, installed at 45k. Now at 90k. I need plugs every 12-15k. Much higher boost, hotter temps … makes the gap increase. Make sure you gap them appropriately and you’ll squeeze out a little more life
My 2011 did something similar recently, under approximately 3/4 load it kinda felt like a transmission slip. So I got it up on the highway and put the pedal to the floor - that *really* made it angry. I checked the transmission fluid expecting it to be burnt and/or low - it's neither. I wouldn't have thought it could be spark related as the ruck doesn't indicate any misfires. But it's worth a shot since it's about due for a tune up anyway (only has 93K miles on it.)
Nice video sir. Happy New Year . And thank I am about to switch out my plug's LOL after 172K. Great little engine. As well as I need to switch out the driver side valve cover. I did have to switch out the alternator do to the valve cover leaking.
I've been having that exact issue. It feels like my transmission slips or like my tires are spinning under moderate to heavy load. I'm at 90k miles. So I'll have to try changing my plugs.
I have 2022 Ford Transit 350 (3.5 ecoboost) AWD with 63,000 miles. I will be changing all 6 spark plugs this week. I’m just waiting for the weather to cool down.
My 2011 was at about 106,000 before the original plugs actually got bad enough to throw a misfire in cylinder 3 under heavy throttle, changed them out and put in a set of NGK irridiums and no more check engine light, less than 2,500 miles later and my misfire in cylinder 3 is back, now to change the coils because I know the NGK's aren't bad this soon! 😂 Tho it didn't really have a stutter before the first misfire, but does have that stutter now under medium throttle, all MAP sensors and MAF sensor cleaned, intake valve cleaning done with CRC, so with new coils she should run and drive like a dream 😁
@@user-gd1ch8nb2b haha, ya I haven't done it yet, been riding motos alot lately with the nice weather. Just a matter of time man. But I feel ya when I see those too. 😅
2019 Ecoboost in Expedition 135,000 miles Well maintained. 89 octane Experience turbo stuttering on the highway and it’s very hard to describe… but you described it.
Mines been the spark plugs. The 6th cylinder has gone out twice. I rally my truck so they get hot and burn out fast. I recommend every 30-50k replace spark plugs. If you drive like an old man than every 50-60k
Have a 2022 f-50 2.7l with 7000 miles on it and put an oil catch can on it new plugs new throttle body been in dealership twice and same issue. I give it about 3/4 gas around 40mph and up it will shutter and act like a misfire it kind of feels like it’s hitting the rev limiter. The only thing I am starting to think is that by putting 33” tires on it throws everything off or something I don’t know. About to get a lund racing tune so I can just tune and clear codes like my other f-150 that had with the same issue.
I have a 2020 ford escape titanium and it stutters between 25-29 & 35-39. I thought it was transmission. It has eco boost Did you also change spark plugs and wires. You think it could be it?
I had this problem with mine changed the the plugs twice would not work with NKGs..until I put ford plugs in it for some reason my truck is picky gaps for all triple checked..
They're supposed to be gapped at 30 When this problem happens my plugs are always at 35 or more. I gotta change mine out about every 30K as well. I've always just bought the motocraft ones. I have a 2012 f150 lariat.
I have a similar problem with my 2012 F150. I changed the plugs and coil packs, map and intake sensors. It just does not like putting your foot down even just a little bit. It does throw misfire codes at random.
Not yet. I am going to guess that perhaps it is the timing chain / camshaft area that needs addressing. I have never had a FORD product that did not have issues with a timing gear / train. The camshafts in our ecoboost engines are a complex instrument unlike the simple ones in our older engines.@@netob6826
2015 f150 3.5. 197k miles. Cam phasers, new turbos and other things done. Have the stutter shake at mid RPM. Truck is still running factory transmission and thought it the torque converter going out but I’ll try the spark plugs for sure. Don’t think they haven’t been changed.
Just started happening to my 2018 ecoboost while I was omw on a long trip, I even pushed it a little to see how bad it was and it scared the shit out of me I thought I was gonna have to pull over but if you drive it easy you can’t tell anything is wrong but anyways thanks for pointing me in the right direction and nice raptor btw

Just found this video and it seems like that’s what my truck might be doing. It started happening whenever my turbo would hit around 15 psi, but it only does it for me when I’m trying to climb hills with or without load. I’ve been forcing a downshift into fifth and a mild speed reduction to get it to stop, but no check engine light has come on. It’s like the engine would cut out with almost a jerking motion. Does it sound similar to yours?
I have a 2018, i just noticed in the last month or so hesitation when trying to get it going. Im not brain dead lol, i know plugs are never a bad idea. But its good to knwo its a common thing with these
i just had a spark plug blow out of my valve cover and it costed 2k. I still have the dang stutter under load between 40 and 75 mph. I think mine is unhappy with the injen intake I put on.
I had the same problem with my 3.5 l and changed the spark plugs along with the ignition coils. However, my truck is doing the same thing. Any suggestions?
@@thinkmore2975 the maf on top the intake, map sensor on top the engine under the engine cover and the map sensor right before the throttle body. Good luck.
I had same problem. Had them replaced, problem went away. But 1 year and 15k miles later, it’s back. Any chance I hit a bad distance plug? Or is it the cables now?
Just had this issue pulling my trailer over a pass, every incline it would stutter, check engine light would flash but it would go away and be fine on flat or decline. Checked the codes when I got home and no codes were stored in the computer...
When I had my ranger I was worried about boost leak so I updated the turbo bypass valve with a GFBits one that is sequential (and made from metal not plastic). Didn’t change the plugs before I sold it for my Tacoma but I was so excited to learn about a turbo engine, given they are becoming more popular on today’s market.
So I have a 2016, 3.5 eco- boost in a Ford Taurus police car. I’m getting that shutter under load also. You can accelerate out of it. Once you get to a certain speed it doesn’t do it anymore. From takeoff speed till about 45 or 50 mph it shutters and the RPMs go up and down 4 to 500 RPMs. This is not flagging an active misfire, but it is giving me a O2 sensor code. So if it’s not firing correctly, more than likely it’s messing with the emissions. It’s only doing it on bank one. P0420. Does this sound about right in everyone’s opinion?
I had bad misfires enough to throw codes, changed plugs, remained. Changed coils, went away, now it’s doing it again except this time the stutter is at lower rpm and no codes. Yours sounds similar, might be time to look into new plugs for you
No your spark plugs are Toast. Check them I bet you the gap is a lot wider than it should be. Put new plugs in Ford motorcraft r about a 100 bucks for the 6 of them. Your engine will thank you for it and so will your mpgs My truck also threw a 02 sensor code But it was the plugs
I have a 2017 Lincoln Navigator l with 73k miles and it does that if I give it halfway full throttle for or over the check engine light well turn on and then it'll go away
They are "special" plugs... it would go against God and all things holy if ford made "specialty" parts that actually lasted. This is how they get you to keep coming in for service and buying more parts. I've had the same regular plugs in my 2005 f150 since I bought it new, never had a problem. Bought a 2017 fx4 new and they get changed every 8-15k miles because they simply arnt designed to last or work.....
That happened today. I was on my way to work and I stepped on it and same thing CE light flashed I let off and it went away. Going to change spark plugs today lol.
@@christianhernandez2190 whenever I started driving when it first happened, it was blinking and I lost power. I was slowing down to pull over and it stopped and the cel light turned off. After changing the plugs the cel light will still be on but turned off after 5 minutes of driving and it’s been good since. 6,000 miles since I changed and no problems

@ZeroToAwesome I also saw something about a potential torque converter issue that could show the same symptoms. Have you ever experienced that? The gap is correct on the plugs, I will look into the packs for sure 👍
i had this problem on my 2015 before but it gave me a misfire code and the tachometer was responsive with the stutter. im having the same exact symptom again now a year later but tachometer is staying perfectly smooth through the stutter and im getting no misfire codes. both o2 sensors are new, so im wondering between plugs and coils, transmission, or perhaps this intercooler weep hole mod ive been reading about. the stutter is as described here, under light acceleration especially on inclines, and feels similar to hitting rumble strips intermittently.

The sad part is when i took the original plugs out they were in amazingly good condition for 100k! Too bad i threw them out. Great video. Thanks.
Dang that’s rough. Double check the plug gap and maybe pull the negative off the battery for a little bit. Maybe the engine needs to learn fresh plugs?
@@tym340i3 i will try and let you know. I've been busy and haven't had a chance to dig in to it. I've been babying the truck and it's been ok but today it threw a code for a misfire on cylinder 6. I'm hoping to have the time to dig into it this weekend.
@@tym340i3 well, I pulled the plug on cylinder 6 and the gap was 40 and it was supposed to be 30. Don't know how that happened. I gapped them myself. Must have had a brain fart. My 5.3 Chevy recommended 100K. I'm lazy and no issues.. swapped them out at 200. Yes.... 200K. I 100% went back with stock! Will swap them out at 300 (in 25K). surprisingly it didn't run better or get better MPG. At least plugs are fairly cheap and way easy to change on that motor, which is nice. The 5.3 is not that easy as the 7 and 8 cylinders are hard to get at.
Planned obsolescence... becoming a big problem for consumers but money in the bank for Manufacturers. Knew a company that hired 4 engineers to make a product fail within a certain time. I've had old cj7s and old Ford trucks that have used the same plugs since I got the vehicles up to 200 k miles and would still go farther but something else failed. All these new cars there's literally people that decide how long they want a part to last and they get it as close as possible. All that plastic under the hood starts getting brittle and falling apart around 120k or sooner. They can make this stuff last but would literally be tossing money in the trash because everyone else does it.
I did the exact same thing I had the exact same problem I changed plugs and coil packs, problem went away…. Basically what I learned researching was when you put a turbo charger on the engine. You have to change the spark plugs and have the normal distance.. you got an engine that gets changed every 50,000 miles and then you buy one that’s turbo charged the same engine now you got 25

Fix the issue?
Make sure you gap them appropriately and you’ll squeeze out a little more life
It’s the “Tune”
Or maybe it’s just time for plugs 😉
My 2011 did something similar recently, under approximately 3/4 load it kinda felt like a transmission slip. So I got it up on the highway and put the pedal to the floor - that *really* made it angry. I checked the transmission fluid expecting it to be burnt and/or low - it's neither. I wouldn't have thought it could be spark related as the ruck doesn't indicate any misfires. But it's worth a shot since it's about due for a tune up anyway (only has 93K miles on it.)
Yeah that was the weird thing- didn’t throw a code at all
Did this fix your problem I have a 2012 doing the same thing
@@ZeroToAwesome mine showed no code but the scanner picked up misfire #6 cylinder......bad sparkplug or coil pack......mine is a 3.5 non turbo
I changed plugs and closed the gap.
The issue is slightly better but still bad. Would a coil pack throw a code?
Nice video sir. Happy New Year . And thank I am about to switch out my plug's LOL after 172K. Great little engine. As well as I need to switch out the driver side valve cover. I did have to switch out the alternator do to the valve cover leaking.
I've been having that exact issue. It feels like my transmission slips or like my tires are spinning under moderate to heavy load. I'm at 90k miles. So I'll have to try changing my plugs.
Sounds familiar. Hope changing the plugs works!
I have a 2.0l ECOBOOST and I as having thr same issue. Changed plugs and problem went away. Thank you !!
I have 2 x f150 Limiteds and bot have this issue. Will try this ASAP and will update upon completion. Greatly appreciate your time and effort sir

Well maintained. 89 octane
Experience turbo stuttering on the highway and it’s very hard to describe… but you described it.
Same problem on my 2017 Interceptor Utility 3.5 Ecoboost 97k miles replaced plugs and all good. Thanks for the video!!!
I never would have thought it was the spark plugs. Is the 55' Chevy drivable? I don't remember seeing a video about it. Happy Fathers Day!

@@ZeroToAwesome Hey, thanks for sending the link. The Chevy is awesome!
Did you ever find what caused the issue?
I have a 2020 ford escape titanium and it stutters between 25-29 & 35-39. I thought it was transmission. It has eco boost
Did you also change spark plugs and wires.
Look into the throttle body. I have a friend with the same year truck who’s gone through four of them!
Drill a 1/16 drain hole in the bottom of your intercooler. Use a self tapping screw so you can plug it again and drain as needed.
I did that as soon as I bought it. I do not plug the drain hole.. BTW that is where I spray my intake cleaner instead of the air intake@@Baneslayer
Did you figure out the issue? I’m having this problem too with my 13 flex EB.
Don’t think they haven’t been changed.
any updates for us having the same issues??

Just started happening to my 2018 ecoboost while I was omw on a long trip, I even pushed it a little to see how bad it was and it scared the shit out of me I thought I was gonna have to pull over but if you drive it easy you can’t tell anything is wrong but anyways thanks for pointing me in the right direction and nice raptor btw
Hey I’m having the same issue on a 2015 I just bought. Did the spark plug replacement fix it?
When I get close to flooring it the car stutters and scares the ever living shit out of me😭
@@blakececil4905 tbh I haven’t even done it yet but I do all types of driving over a lot of miles and I haven’t felt that stutter ever since I’ve been keeping out of the throttle
Sounds about the same. Load or no load hitting the throttle up a hill it would do it
I have a 2018, i just noticed in the last month or so hesitation when trying to get it going. Im not brain dead lol, i know plugs are never a bad idea. But its good to knwo its a common thing with these
Thank you 😭😭🙏🙏 this helped soooo much I was hoping my trans wasn’t gone
i just had a spark plug blow out of my valve cover and it costed 2k. I still have the dang stutter under load between 40 and 75 mph. I think mine is unhappy with the injen intake I put on.
Thanks. I have a 2013 F-150 Ecoboost. Doing the same thing when I try to pass somebody. Gonna change the plugs ASAP.
How'd the change out go?
How long have you been running the tune? Have you had any problems with it
About 40k. So far so good
Yes when you tune them it makes your spark plugs last less
I had the same problem with my 3.5 l and changed the spark plugs along with the ignition coils. However, my truck is doing the same thing. Any suggestions?
Maybe give the ‘ol computer a negative battery cable reset? And double check your spark plug gap
I changed my throttle body and cleaned all the sensors along the intake and mine has been running like new
@@Branhawkwhich sensors. My poor raptor have been at the dealership for months
Yep. New plugs. Problem solved. Thank you!
Just had this issue pulling my trailer over a pass, every incline it would stutter, check engine light would flash but it would go away and be fine on flat or decline. Checked the codes when I got home and no codes were stored in the computer...
always check the gab and set them all the same even with preset plugs ive seen preset ones have diff gap settings
There is a TSB for this in the 10R80's. Issue is in the CDF drum.
I just got mine changed from a ford dealership and now I have the stutter
Assuming they used the right plugs they may not be gapped correctly. That’ll do it too
It's that for now and then it will be the coil boots you need to replace them too
So I have a 2016, 3.5 eco- boost in a Ford Taurus police car.
My 2016 SHO is doing this now, I replaced plugs and coils and still have the issue
Turbo waste gate stuck. Change air filter had put fresh fuel in it. Run a can of STP Ultra before you do anything else.
I have a 2017 Lincoln Navigator l with 73k miles and it does that if I give it halfway full throttle for or over the check engine light well turn on and then it'll go away
I have a 13 f150 eco boost and had to change my plugs out at 65000 also . Eco boost plugs get gummed up faster.
Happened today going up a steep hill in Colorado. Flashing check engine light, too.
That happened today. I was on my way to work and I stepped on it and same thing CE light flashed I let off and it went away. Going to change spark plugs today lol.
It happened to me, and it was 1 ignition coil , today apparently another went out because spark plugs are new
I did all spark plugs and coil packs runs like a champ!
Did you throw a cel? My lariat special edition is doing that but I have a cel
No that was the weird part
@@ZeroToAwesome mine just started this and I threw a cel. When I read it, it said it was the spark plugs causing miss fire
@@PokeBreakersTCG was it a blinking cel light ?
@@christianhernandez2190 whenever I started driving when it first happened, it was blinking and I lost power. I was slowing down to pull over and it stopped and the cel light turned off. After that whenever I got into my truck the cel was on. Ended up being spark plugs. I replaced them and it has ran fine since. After changing the plugs the cel light will still be on but turned off after 5 minutes of driving and it’s been good since. 6,000 miles since I changed and no problems
88k miles and my 2020 ecoboost just started chugging under hard acceleration guess I'll be looking into this
I am having a problem with my vehicle now and the transmission fluid was 1 wt low I filled it and it’s shifting better but it’s loss power at acceleration from 0-25ish mph and it’s a 135 k now I bought it at 109k so I’m gonna change the sparkies which I’ve been thinking is the issue
Did it act as if it had a boost leak?
No, it was a very quick and repetitive on/off stutter. Made me think the transmission was missing a few teeth at first
I changed my spark plugs at 100,000 but still experiencing a stutter in acceleration. Not too severe but enough to hinder the full pull that I know my truck can have. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
Double check the plug gap b/c they don’t come gapped correctly from the factory. If that doesn’t fix it I’d start looking at coil packs. Good luck!
@ZeroToAwesome I also saw something about a potential torque converter issue that could show the same symptoms. Have you ever experienced that? The gap is correct on the plugs, I will look into the packs for sure 👍
Any update
Worth a shot. Worst case is I got new plugs
Every 30 k change plugs turbos are tough and oil every 3500
Maybe once a year,?
i had this problem on my 2015 before but it gave me a misfire code and the tachometer was responsive with the stutter. im having the same exact symptom again now a year later but tachometer is staying perfectly smooth through the stutter and im getting no misfire codes. both o2 sensors are new, so im wondering between plugs and coils, transmission, or perhaps this intercooler weep hole mod ive been reading about. the stutter is as described here, under light acceleration especially on inclines, and feels similar to hitting rumble strips intermittently.
Sounds about right. Rpms were steady and no code for me too
I've tried everything it's always the spark plugs
I went with 1 step colder NGK Iridium plugs gapped at .026
I have a ford escape 2016 1.6lt eco boost its only at about 94,000 and this issue pops up fluently i took it to a dealership cause its warrantied they say nothings wrong i use to do work on my old car constantly I was assuming it was a shudder in the trans anyone else with an escape can you let me nlknow if this fixed the issue

Aggressive or electric. Either way
my 2016 lincoln mkt ecoboost has this and i only had a few plugs changed for weird reasons but i does this too and its so damn annoying and i already had to do a torque converter. Just stumbled across this video but I tried this a few months ago and still have the same issue. Could it be the coil packs? It's a 2015 Explorer Sport with 103k miles
My girlfriend is having the exact problem, if you get it figured out please let me know cause I'm very inexperienced with fords lol
Never had the stutter, BUT… I’m on my 3rd TB. Nothing like having that go out at 75mph on the hwy… while towing… and you have to coast to the side so you can shut it off and let it reset. 😡
Dang. Fix or repair daily (while towing) at its finest!
What if I have the v8 , feels like a shutter
Worth a shot. 2 more plugs but hopefully they’re as easy to change!
This just happened to me right after I changed the transmission oil and the spark plugs !!
Check the gap on those plugs!
My 2016 f-150 was running great and then i decided to swap the plugs at 100k. Put in the exact brand and at 104k it just started doing exactly what you are describing describing! It's not throwing any codes. I don't know what else it could be. It'll suck to have to go buy a new set of plugs. I may have to give it a try. The sad part is when i took the original plugs out they were in amazingly good condition for 100k! Too bad i threw them out. Great video. Thanks.

Take that engine cover off and throw it away. your intake temps will drop drastically and your truck will be faster.
Plugs and coils fixed 3 of our company trucks
Nope, just changed mine and still the stutter. 2011 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost!
Did you find the issue?
I did the exact same thing I had the exact same problem I changed plugs and coil packs, problem went away…. Basically what I learned researching was when you put a turbo charger on the engine. You have to change the spark plugs and have the normal distance.. you got an engine that gets changed every 50,000 miles and then you buy one that’s turbo charged the same engine now you got 25
carbon tracking
