You can guarantee that a mechanic is extremely competent if he allows an audience to watch him perform a task that he has never done. 👍
Its called ALLDATA.
I always liked a "new" item that you have never serviced previously. It is a learning experience to add to your history. Keep wrenching Kenny!
Replacement of both would be best but not buying a vehicle with a turbo engine is better ! Most owners do not maintain them very well. At least in my 45 + years as a mechanic. 2nd owners are the ones who foot this bill.
You are spot on most people that buy new do minimal maintenance and then unload them before they have to foot a repair bill leaving the new owner holding the bag.
It happens to the best of us, don't sweat it, it will get done. I installed a bad engine before, you know that's a drag.
I own a 2011 F150 with the Ecoboost engine and while it can be a pain to work on, I still love my engine. It's a really fun truck to drive and will get up and go!
I really enjoy driving them! Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Wow! Sad to see you have to go through that whole remove/install process again. I guess the good news is that you wont have to deal with the frozen bolts this time. It is interesting to note that these kind of things happen to the pro's, I have had to re-do to many of my do it yourself repairs because of defective parts.
How old are you. I'm 62 in November. My body can't even hardly fill a wrench. I'm out of the garage next February 1st. S.S. here I come .😮
Congratulation's, that's great! I'm 57 Thanks for watching & you will keep wrenching. It's in our blood.
gotta love these engineers ho get paid big bucks never thinking things all the way thrue I spent almost$1000to fix some oil lines on my turbo ford edge turbo.
I can only imagine that conversation between the order taker at the parts store and the driver, "he only needs the one side, make sure you grab the right one".
HA!
Kenny at first seeing this : must be a clogged oil returnline Always replace the return line (don't clean it, it contains burned oil) The returnflow keeps the oil level at the bearings at a specific level, so with a clogged return the oil level rises obove the wanted level and a leak occurs.
Enjoyed the video 👍👍
Just found your channel! Love your videos!
Long or short, it's better than what's on tv
Well that sucks but on the bright side you caught it
Cheers from Nova Scotia
what a job, a big pain
Its because when you have one of those clips go flying you say “oh jesus”
No it’s Jesus Christ I wish I had one !!
A couple of years ago I was looking for a replacement for my '06 F150 with a 4.6L, and all I could find were trucks with the Eco-Boost engines. I have a couple of friends that have them, and they have both had turbo problems, so I gave up and kept the old truck. Salesmen really pressured me to go with one, but I wasn't convinced. Simple is better. Admittedly they put out a lot of power and get bett
Good video Kenny.er fuel mileage, but over the long run, if you have any problems with them, the costs outweigh the savings, IMHO.
Good video Kenny, looks like it was a real bear to change.
Bummer on having a leak and having to do it all over again. 😦
Take good care of that 4.6L V8, it is a rock solid engine. You should be able to get half a million miles out of it maybe more.
The F250 with the gas engine is a more sensible option. 6 speed trans, no vvt, normal fuel injection system, no push button start, etc.. It has some newer tech on it but its not a rolling computer network like an F150. Its a lot cheaper too. I haven't seen one for a while because I work at a Lincoln only dealership, but sometime within the last 2 years, the window sticker was under 40k. Everyone overlooks that particular truck.
I've always used 3M weatherstrip adhesive which is essentially contact cement in a squeeze tube.
Mr Kenny 😅 even the name Eco boost, scares me 😊. Seems like the turbo would wear out the engine faster, but what can I say, I'm old school 😂
Kenny- I replaced both turbos on my 2014 with 209000 miles- because the exhaust manifold all leak badly. Check your job, they leak at the rear, BD Diesel makes a superior replacement. The oil line MUST be removed and the screen at the other end MUST be cleaned or replaced- they clog and that leads to turbo failure. I replaced all the coolant and oil lines and all fittings. I also ditched that restricted exhaust flange for a bigger one, a few places sell them. The 3 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold should be replaced as they are an interference fit into the flange. I watched many hours of TH-cam and tackled mine took 2 weeks but it works perfectly. Fordtechmakuloco explains it all very well. Those push fittings, though ........junk. I think yours needs new coolant and oil lines. You do NOT want to do this again.... Good Luck Kenny!!
Those coolant lines on the back of the turbos are a bear
If you don't change / clean that $25.00 screen filter then you just wasted $1,000 because the turbo will not get enough oil.
EXACTLY! Fortunately mine were clean. Change yer oil @3000 miles, or else,,,,,,,@@jimmieb1773
That's a very good point. Makuloco was stressing that very thing when he replaced an Ecoboost turbo.
Love the longer video's Kenny.I like the extra info.
The torx fastners,I have the Grip Edge set and well worth every penny.Fit in better with a tighter fit than a regular torx bit socket
Quick tip to force camera to focus on small things: put palm of your hand right behind the small thing u want camera to focus on ... Learned it from other youtubers ... Or if u cannot put palm behind the object because filming with one hand etc try to put the small object against a bigger object a table etc
Thanks for your tip! In my spare time 😂😂😂 I want to learn how to use a GoPro. I appreciate your help. Keep wrenching 🔧
There are very few turbo replacement videos here on youtube. This one was fun to watch.
Indeed, so glad I don’t have turbos
Thanks !!
Wife had a 2015 Lincoln mkc. 2.0 litre echo boost only 65 kilometres. 40k miles. Turbo. Was starting. To leak It looked like a pain in the ass to replace I let that baby go to another home
. We Looked @ the 2023 rx. 350 it’s 4 cyl. Turbo She didn’t like the way it drove. It’s noisy. Auto start on off crap. I said get the 2022 is that last year they make the v6. Naturally aspirated
Smart decision! Thank for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
@@on-site4094 If you're doing the work yourself, its not a difficult job. The exhaust is on the back side of the engine, and there's a big crossmember that needs to come down. Once you do that, you'll have plenty of room to get the turbo out. It looks worse than it is. If you get the workshop manual for your vehicle, it will give you step by step instructions for every nut and bolt on the job.
Good morning Mr Kenny, glad to hear from you and hope you have a great day.
Thanks, you too Bobby! Keep wrenching 🔧
The clock on the wall is hilarious.
e have enough problem's with naturally aspirated engines never mind turbo engines , thanks Kenny
I love my job so much I'll do it again 😅😅😅 you know who always says that I think
Right?! I'm so mad at myself. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching!
Rainman Ray don't know if you know
Who he is
Repair-Pal estimates for this one only left side turbocharger is $1500 to $2000 dollars. I'll continue with my V6 non turbo 2015 Toyota Tacoma thank you very much!! By the way, all of that brittle plastic and degradable rubber exposed to all of that engine heat is a potential vacuum leak just waiting to occur.
Kenny I shared you on my channel. Hope you don't mind. I have watched you ever since you found the bee hive or wasp nest in the intake on a ranger lol
@41:55 I believe "bottoming tap" is what you refer to here. You can improvise one (particularly just for thread cleanup) by filing a couple of slots lengthwise in a bolt.
A plug tap can be converted into a bottoming tap by cutting the tapered end off, but this has to be done with care and a lot of cooling so the heat of cutting doesn't anneal the tap and make it soft.
Those tap sockets are AWESOME for getting into tight spots that can't fit a traditional tap wrench.
I can feel the frustration !
I go to youtube everyday at work. Sometimes faster and more helpful than all-data 😂
I really enjoy your videos, thanks for making them! It's good to get an experienced mechanics view.
Great video! Enjoy all the videos you make! 😎👍
I know a lot of times it's highly subjective on mileage because things can break at any time but I always heard that the turbos are quite a common thing on those engine models at least having to change it at least once during the engine's life but the newer ones I think around 17 and up our less prone to that turbo failure
I like the long videos. More wrenching please.
Thanks from Australia
I had a leaking coolant line in my 2015 . I bought it at 38K miles the dealer fixed it.
58:47 I see ford built in what looks to me like one of those Tornado fuel savers
Yes! I noticed that & laughed. Good eye. Thanks for watching 🔧
Although many prefer a "longer" video, I, being a mechanic(45+ years), prefer the shorter ones you used to make, as the removing & tightening of parts is trivial UNLESS there is some unusual item that sets it apart from the mundane.
I prefer the short videos. I don't need to see every single little detail. After a bit I loose interest.
Unfortunately I had to modify a tool which took more time. Several viewers requested to make a turbo video. Some of them are backyard mechanics & wanted to see the entire job. You are definitely not one of them. Thanks for your patience & continued support. Keep wrenching!
@@WrenchingWithKenny I am not disappointed with any of your videos. Please do not take my comment the wrong way. I have been a subscriber from way back and I enjoy watching. I even tried to get in touch with you about a question that I had.
Thanks for your reply. I'm just trying to do what I can to help the people that need the help. Did you post your question on FB? TH-cam is hard for me to do a follow-up on. Holler on FB if you need me. I hope you're well & again thanks for watching 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny thank you sir!
Try this on a 4wd in the salt belt...that 2wd has so much more access!!
Good job Kenny. But did you replace the turbo filter screen?
The Turbo bolt is not a typical round bolt. It is 3 sided to be a self retaining.
Northwestern, Manitoba 50 years heavy duty Mechanic
Is there a reason that anticize was not used on the flange bolts were the turbo bolted to the engine. I saw were you were having difficulty getting the bolts out and would think having anticize on them would be easier to remove them next time. Good job at removing and replacing the turbo. First time I have seen this on you tube.
Induction heater
It would be too thoughtful and convenient for car makers to put anti-seize on bolts at the factory which they may assume might need to be removed for service.
Teflond tape
Calm down wild man with the stool
Thanks for the content. I dont hsbe nor want sn ecoboost. This will be extremely helpful to alot of people though. Poor souls.
That’s funny the one turbo I did on one of those a few years ago had the same leak when I installed it. I was able to get the plug out and regasket it and finally got it tight to stop leaking. One of the worst jobs ever
The leaves etc are part of the “engineered to fail” concept?
Ford Ecojunk.
Does ford make you pressure test the intercooler
Have you ever used the heat up units?
Wouldn’t it be easier to work on the turbo with the engine removed from the chassis?
no hose clamp wrench that size?
Well corn.
Did you fix the leak in the end?
Hey Kenny, did the warranty cover it ?
Hey brother Kenny, before I forget I have paused the video to be sure that I ask you how do you get that debris from out of the front fender and better yet how can you keep it from showing up there in the first place. As to the "Jesus" clip holder-remover, I have no problem with that as even the best Christian would likely call out the name if they lost it.
Glenn! It's Mrs Wrenching. I can't answer your question but it is wonderful to hear from you. I hope you are well 😃
This turbo is still not too bad compared to my Mazda CX7 Turbo which hides deep between firewall and back of engine... it's so hard to access, that pulling the engine is almost worth it!
The turbo's on a cx7 are very easy to replace. It comes out from the bottom. You don't get if from under the hood. It can easily be done in under 2 hours.
@@AT-wl9yq I have the AWD version - I guess removing the transfer case would give access from the bottom... not sure how easy it would be to remove transfer case from bottom though...
Did you ever clean out all the debris inside that fender & clear out that drain hole in the door while you had it open?
What’s flat rate on that job? 1.7 hours?
Kenny, are you aware that a oil filter for the Ford turbo exists at Rock parts list? The last and only turbo I ever had was a black Saab 900 turbo with those wild aztec wheels..too bad it did perform as cool as it looked.
Not all turbo Fords have them.
You have enough dirt in the fender well to plant potatoes 🥔
The other side won't be long in this world. Maybe they can save up to have it replaced
Hi Kenny ,just a random question .Do you and other car mechanics leave your power tools on the chargers in the shop over night ,I mean is it safe ? I don't only because I'm not sure .All the best from Australia..
Hi to Australia! I don't know if it's safe or not, but I wouldn't chance it either. A local shop burned to the ground & they investigator said it was from a plugged in device. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny Thanks for your reply. All the best..
I never us a tap or die to chase threads I have a rethread set for that. I've found that using a tap or die is a little different.
I wish they worked for me. I have had the worst luck with rethread sets. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Baby start mentioning the mileage of the real connection starting to work on so people can kind of get an idea of who follows closely I want to expect on a certain models
It seems better to just use screws to hold the inner cover thin clips.
It's about money & tolerances. The clips are more forgiving. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Bottoming tap
you go to ford engineering division find the guy with the most pens in his shirt pocket and grab him drag him to the car and say ok genius you take this off.
Those mounting bolts may be interference fit and one time use
Do you have to charge the turbo with oil before the first start?
It would be nice, but the inlet faces straight down..........so I just floored the gas pedal and cranked the engine a while before it fired.
I have that jesus clip tool, for working on carbuerators, back in the day. But I always called it Jesus Christ tool, because that is what you say, when you drop the retaining clip.
Not your fault the brand new turbo is leaking just because it's new doesn't mean it's good
Every mechanic gasoline or diesel knows what a jesus clip is. It’s the name the clip is spontaneously given in the excitement of the moment when the clip goes flying across the bay floor into the abyss. This is followed with other profanities when you find the parts room doesn’t have a replacement and you can’t release the vehicle for a fifteen cent part.
Maybe put grade 5 or 8 hex bolts back in
metric
@@juanrodriguez-ry6yt yes your right, a high tensile strength hex head metric bolt. Easier to torque out a head head than torqx in my opinion
Why wouldn't you get new studs.
Why not replace both turbos? Because you’re going to sell it. Me as a buyer: 1. I’m not buying a turbo engine. 2. When I see you replaced one turbo and the other is leaking that tells me a lot about your view of maintenance and I’m done. I enjoy very much how Kenny takes you on a journey as a guide even to places he hasn’t been before.
If you still think turbos are a good idea after watching this video, then i have some swamp
Land in Florida you might be interested in...oh and some magic beans that grow pigs that fly......
😂😂😂 thanks for watching 🔧
Sorry can't see the thumbs up.
That "Jesus clip" tool keeps one from taking the Lords name in vain! 🤣🤣
Dumb question , EV vehicles do you notice a % change on what you send to an auto electrician for?
The reason they call it a Jesus clip is when you lose it you say" there it went Jesus I wish I had another one " .
Ford apparently has no damn idea how to put a turbo on a vehicle. The Ecoboost truck motors are a nightmare for owners. So much extra expense and maintenance. And the Escape.... I like my 2016 but replacing the turbo in that car was one of the more difficult jobs I've done in a long time. Took me 2 days because its on the back of the engine against the firewall. Would have been easier to just drop the entire cradle out of the car.
I hate the sudo-word "Eco" tacked on to any product marketing moniker. It is a weasel word designed to imply economy or environmentally but is neither. It is particularly egresses when tacked on the the word "diesel."
As much as I love your videos and learn a lot from them, I found this far too long as others have said. I really don't have the time to sit for an hour and watch. OK, I could pause it and return, but then you kind of loose the momentum.
Turbo is the problem for all engines you get haft the life of the engine's
I agree. To me,, the small displacement along with the raised power band automatically disqualifies these as truck engines.
On the other hand, my Powerstroke would be a real dog without its turbo. Diesels are a whole different animal though.
Trading in my 21 Explorer ST. It’s absolute junk.
Remind me to never buy a turbocharged engine vehicle. I will never own one.
Don't feel bad my brother as you end this video saying 'epic fail'. The problem is not you. You kept filming the actual problem and that is "ECOBOOST", the emblem on the side of the door. I'd be embarrassed if I were Ford to put shit out there like this in the first place. I guess you can tell I really don't like Fords.
LOL who could be offended, it's not against Jesus it's because you yell that out when it flies across the driveway when you're trying to take it off. People need to relax!
Owner doesn’t want to fix the other side because he will probably dump the car very soon, and buy a Toyota instead.
This is why I try and avoid purchasing a car with turbos, not to mention other reasons why 🤦♂️
That push in coolant line though....🤔🤔...seriously poor engineering design by Ford...The leaking blanking plug with the dodgy machining...?...QC non existant...😳😳😏🇬🇧
You aren't kidding!!! Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny Enjoy your videos Kenny...Always interesting..😏😏😏
sorry man.. I really enjoy your videos but I can't do 1 hour plus .. 30 minutes is probably my limit..
