If we've not found a reaction to Phillips not playing - then that's Southgate's fault for playing him earlier in the season, same as when he kept playing Macguire. Spain would find a way to cope without rodri for example, they're also not scared to throw a youngster in. The first game was perfect to blood Wharton or Mainoo, to give them tournament experience in the least pressured game - instead Southgate stuck with the failed TAA experiment, whilst playing at least 2 others out of position

The fact that he has a team full of some of the best attacking players in the world. All in form. And hardly any defenders and the ones he does have are good for going forward but still he wants to play defensive football just shows how tactically inept he is.
Foden just had his best ever season. Won player of the year playing down the middle but he has him on the left.

He's often picked the wrong players, not played the best players and not played them in positions that they suit. Its the sitting midfielders causing the main issues, we don't need two holding midfielders, our defence is top class no matter what anyone says, the holding midfielders are causing us to sit far to deep, its creating an issue for us up front, when they get the ball they are alone up there, no options, no runs through the middle from Rice and no one for Trent to hit a ball to as we have no runners overlapping. Southgate has the entire set up wrong in the middle and further up the pitch. If you play trent you have to play runners like Gordon and Watkins, why take Trent off then replace him with a holding midfielder, then bring on a runner like Watkins ? it makes no sense.

He may score a fairly decent amount of goals, but im pretty sure the only consistent denominator in him never winning anything is only himself. I wonder if Southgate is too much of a pussycat to tell him to stay up on the pitch, or if Kane is just refusing to follow orders, but him dropping low is just baffling with the amount of talent behind him that can play him through. The problem is not Foden, the problem is not Kane. The problem is compromising several areas of the pitch to accommodate Jude in the 10, and the irony is, Jude isn’t even a natural 10, he’s an 8, yet Gareth insists on playing Trent 8. It’s completely absurd. He has all the pieces at his disposal, and a 2yr old could put this puzzle together.
    Jude & Rice double pivot
    Foden 10
    Gordon on the left
Natural balance restored, heart of the pitch bolstered, Foden now in his optimal position, Kane’s toes ain’t getting stood on, and Gordon can hold the width creating space in central pockets for Foden, or be a runner in behind when Kane drops deep, and Jude & Rice bully the midfield.

Great insight shared by Gary here, but the reality is that this theme has been happening for far too long. Southgate has had ample opportunity to progress the style of play and identity he wants, with the players available.
To be experimenting with TAA in a midfield role - for the sake of trying to fit him in - as the tournament starts is insanity. You could essentially take the style of Bayern Munich to fit around Kane to ensure chances are created and he finishes them.
Kane might as well not be in the team when that style of play is adopted. How do teams win tournaments? They go on the attack with the ability to put games to bed quickly scoring many goals and creating chances. We've gone 1-0 up against Denmark and tried to defend a lead.
The only counter to Gary here is that this has been happening for years. Southgate has had chances to bury teams with the players he has had. Not just in setting the team up, but also in match decisions. One of England's brightest prospects - Cole Palmer - is sat watching the likes of Bowen, Eze and Gallagher be introduced to change a game. That in itself is ridiculous.
Thankfully it'll be his last tournament and whoever comes in pretty much has a blueprint in how not to set the team up right.

Saying Harry Kane "has never been massively mobile" and saying he should conserve energy by not coming back, while also saying he needs to lead an energetic press makes no sense. You're demonstrating one example of exactly Southgate's problem right now: he has really good players, but it's hard to get them all working in one system given their skill sets. Keep in mind, for the press to work, you need not only forward and mids who can press, but also defenders who can keep the line and jump in when necessary. England's defenders, minus Walker, don't really do that. Additionally, Trent in midfield is a difficult ask, but it's especially hard when Bellingham is also coming all the way back to play where Trent is, making that midfield to forward line connection much weaker. Their positions either need to change or they need to be more disciplined, but most of England's guys are not particularly disciplined, not only for the national team but for their clubs, and it shows when Southgate has to try to make do.

The Spain v Italy game last night was a clear example of the differences in tactical nous between managers ... England and Spain are probably fairly equal in terms of attacking and defensive talent, yet Spain spent pretty much the whole game on the front foot, and it paid off. I can't see Southgate changing his mindset now, so the only way we'll make the best of this latest "golden generation" is by getting rid of Southgate.

When you have a guy who managed Middlesbrough and got them relegated, managed the same crop of players at U21s and won nothing, won only 2 league cups in his playing career and 1 what would have been Championship title....Who spent a lot of his playing career mid table...what do you expect tactically?? I mean you don't get your badges and it teaches everyone to be quality coaches obviously! You need a winning mentality and Southgate has never had that in his whole Footballing career!! He knows deep down that this is the best job he will ever have....ever!! He will come out of here and either be a decent Championship side manager or bottom of the Premier league. He is petrified of losing because ultimately avoiding that keeps his job in the eyes of the FA because it is all about stats and results, not about how we play and what we accomplish.... We all plaud him for coming in 4th in his first WC which was the easiest draws we have ever had at a tournament!!! Losing a final to a very mediocre Italian side who yes had gone unbeaten for a long time but also wasn't an attack minded side freescoring and we sat back and gave them time and space. We then lost to France in the Quarters in a game he made no tactical changes until it was too late. He also failed in the Nations league twice if I'm not mistaken? Lost to Hungary TWICE!!
Southgate got the job because of the news around Big Sam (another ridiculously stupid appointment by the FA....run by businessmen not football men!!!) He kept the job because of the Semi Final but I am pretty sure, most half decent managers could have done the same job...we plaud it onto Southgate but I am pretty sure most of it is down to the players and the culture these days!!!! I said when Big Sam took over then Southgate....we will win nothing with these in charge, 7 years later I am still right!!!
This mess for England has been created the same way Man Utd mess has, having people in control who aren't Football men!!!
