Should be sacked anyway tbh. And probably two tournaments ago. The fact that he has a team full of some of the best attacking players in the world. All in form. And hardly any defenders and the ones he does have are good for going forward but still he wants to play defensive football just shows how tactically inept he is. Foden just had his best ever season. Won player of the year playing down the middle but he has him on the left. Whilst i do think he's shit himself in the foot by taking so much inexperience. The best of that inexperience. Cole Palmer and Mainoo (have barely had a look in)
Kane is a great goalscorer but we need pace, Trent should be playing rb with Watkins /toney making those runs then swap foden with Bellingham, foden is wasted out left. Kane either needs to be dropped or have a pacey striker up front with him. How the hell are we meant to beat anyone when kane keeps dropping in deep. Negative football does not win tournaments. The whole set up stinks
Shearer sounded as mad as most england supporters have been for the last 7-8 years . Gareth thought he could win a tournament with his anti football football now he looks completely confused that playing this way is no good. England are the worst team to watch they have some stand out players that would make other international teams but anyone would look bad playing walking football.
Yep. And it seems that's all the English pundits are finally realising what most England fans realised years ago. Southgate is tactically inept. He's often picked the wrong players, not played the best players and not played them in positions that they suit. He's played defensive football with little to know strength in defense and now he finally picks the best players but he's outright playing defensive football with a team full of attackers.
"as mad as most england supporters have been for the last 7-8 years England have made semis and finals....goodness me, have you seen englands tournament record from 1980-2015?!?! It was dire. Why do england fans view as anything but a trophy as failure. They have NEVER won it in the modern era.
Not a single one of these people ever bring up the fact that Trent was the creator, in one of Liverpool's best ever teams, from right back. Trying to shoehorn Trent in as a midfielder just so Kyle Walker can 'slot in' at right back is f**King preposterously stupid.
He gave his opinion on MOTD about Watkins actually moving the defence and he doesn't need to score every touch because he has so much talent around him.
Got chills listening to Gary speak about what England need to do moving forward - actually changed from listening on the pod to watching the video. Loving the passion in this analysis - I think the red wine helps :)
Its the sitting midfielders causing the main issues, we don't need two holding midfielders, our defence is top class no matter what anyone says, the holding midfielders are causing us to sit far to deep, its creating an issue for us up front, when they get the ball they are alone up there, no options, no runs through the middle from Rice and no one for Trent to hit a ball to as we have no runners overlapping. Southgate has the entire set up wrong in the middle and further up the pitch. If you play trent you have to play runners like Gordon and Watkins, why take Trent off then replace him with a holding midfielder, then bring on a runner like Watkins ? it makes no sense.
Wasn’t even aware Lineker, Shearer and Richards had a podcast. This was fun to watch, after such a horrid display yesterday this was much needed lol. Frank and Moyes look like they’d be a good laugh to hang out with 😂

Ben White laughing his head off. To think he went from tactical coaching from Arteta to listening to Steve Holland and Southgate, and people thought HE WAS THE ISSUE. Do me a fucking favour
100%. It's shocking to me that when every pundit has been praising Southgate ahead of the Euros, saying he would be good enough for Man Utd etc, that none mentioned the fact that one of their best defenders whose incredibly versatile, refused to play under Southgate and Holland.
@@KetaManiaccIt had more to do with White being disgusted with Qatar and their treatment of certain minorities than anything to do with playing for Southgate
Was interested by Walkers comments in the post match interview '2nd guessing making overlapping attacking runs incase we lose the ball and concede and I get the blame for it'. Almost as if the players are scared of playing how they normally do out of fear of the publics opinions. All we want to see is the players expressing themselves how they normally do all season. Would forgive players for making errors if they show abit of desire and hunger

Nobody calls out Southgate for being clueless; all we hear is people skirting around the issue instead of saying "he's playing Foden as a LW and thinks Kalvin Phillips is irreplaceable... the guy's a womble". The day a BBC or ITV presenter says that is the day I'll respect their opinion.

In the last tournament there was a big debate about who would start at RB out of Walker, Trent and Trippier. Looks like Southgate finally found his solution by having all 3 at the same time...
“Kane needs to start pressing and make more runs” Sorry but that hasn’t been part of his game for a few years now, so why would you want to shoehorn that into him halfway through a tournament? If we want our striker to play that way, surely the better option is to just start Watkins? He’s proven he can do that exact job all season long.
Absolutely well said. As Shearer says he needs runners around him and Kane needs to stay high up the pitch. I know this won’t be popular but I’d really like to see Toney given a start in the next game either alongside Kane or instead of. Or even Palmer.
@@MovieTrailerDatabase Toney is behind Watkins and Palmer in the picking order imo, I'm almost certain Southgate only took him as a late penalty specialist sub for the knockout stages because he's been trash since returning from his ban. If Southgate wants the best out of Kane he needs Gordon playing down the left wing taking the ball to the byline and into the box frequently. If he wants the focus mainly on attacking through the centre with Foden and Bellingham he needs to start Waktins
Mbappe never presses, Ronaldo or Messi in their pomp never pressed...and do you ever see their countrymen asking them to be dropped for Kolo Muani, Helder Postiga or Garnacho 🤣
Im sorry, but Kane is nowhere near any of those three when it comes to the ability to make things happen all on his lonesome, so can't understand how he is getting away with doing no pressing. He may score a fairly decent amount of goals, but im pretty sure the only consistent denominator in him never winning anything is only himself. I wonder if Southgate is too much of a pussycat to tell him to stay up on the pitch, or if Kane is just refusing to follow orders, but him dropping low is just baffling with the amount of talent behind him that can play him through. England dont need him to drop down to their cb's to start things any more than Bayern does, yet he does is every damn match again and again.
@soyUsernameWasTaken not sure what you're getting at. As the head of the FA, it literally is Prince William. I can't tell from your comment if you know that.

Who WERE top managers? Capello? Eriksson? How far did they get? Who are the great managers who'd be happy to manage England? It's a completely thankless job.
Love the normal pod but these tournament specials are magic!! Even better to watch than to listen, the ‘odd’ swear word makes it even better. Keep up the good work chaps!

I feel sorry for Trent. England needs runners upfront for trent to work in the midfield. So that he can ping them long passes. But there's nothing... England has the best squad. But the manager oouuff!
Kane has got lazy playing for Bayern who dominate the ball and play teams that sit back. He has never been fast but he has always demanded the ball and been aggressive. I have seen none of that this Euros
Are people forgetting that Kane used to do high press at Spurs under Poch? All these players know how to high press and Southgate not seeing that, is extremely disappointing

It's not a conundrum, ffs. I don't get why it's so hard for you "pundits" to see it. The midfield + left side are the main issues. Rice NEEDS one of Mainoo or Wharton next to him. Not Gallagher, who runs about but does nothing with the ball. Not Bellingham either. Gordon MUST start on the left.
OMG. are you suggesting that Foden get benched because Gary Neville doesnt want to live in a world in which we ponder not having Foden in the starting 11.
You just proved it is a conundrum as I wouldnt have anyone play alongside rice, we don't need 2 sitting midfielders, have rice, and Bellingham with foden in the 10 and gordon left wing, the team is balanced then just get some actual pressing going
@@proevoisace7 I agree, the sitting midfielders are holding us far too deep. Our defence look like they would be absolutely fine 1v1, clearly the two sitting midfielders isn't working, he has to change it next game, if he doesn't he needs to go home now.
@@proevoisace7Rice,Bellingham and Foden would be better than the dross we’re watching now. However they would be found out against better sides, who acknowledge that you need midfielders that get set tempo and control the game
These players are not negative for their clubs, so has to be Southgates game plan. Trent being the scapegoat is unfair in that he plays him with Kane who plays deep only offering short pass options. He then brings on Watkins who is making runs upfront but takes Trent off so there is no one with the long pass ability to find him. Southgate is a great man manager but terrible tactician
It's not a question of negativity. It's actually the opposite: Southgate has been trying to fit too many attacking talents in one team, and doesn't have a proper defensive midfielder who can mop up in front of defence and act as a conduit to distribute it effectively to attacking midfielders and forwards. He tried to play Rice and TAA as defensive midfielders when neither one has the game to perform that role.
Moyes & Southgate cut from the same cloth - The way England are playing is exactly how we was playing under him at West Ham, except we conceded nearly 80 goals last season!
After the dogshit performance against Serbia, talksports Alex Crook suggested that the system isn't working and they'll struggle against Denmark. Moyes response was "oh and what makes you an expert? you've clearly done your coaching badges haven't you". Apart from Southgate, Moyes must be the only person on the planet that couldn't see that abject performance against Denmark coming.
Football is all about balance and you can’t play all your good players expecting them to figure it out on the pitch . The hard truth about the midfield is Foden and Jude can’t play together, you are going to have to sacrifice 1 of them to play alongside Wharton/Mainoo and Rice with Gordon on the wing to get things working in the middle of the park . Also the left back option is a disgrace especially when you snubbed Mitchell and Colwill for an injured shaw
England can play with two 10's, Southgate just refuses that as an option and won't consider anything other than two holding mids. Foden is getting lost on the wing because he doesn't belong there, but there is no reason Bellingham and Foden can't play together next to each other in front of Rice. Bellingham has a high defensive work rate anyway so we don't need another defensive mid next to Rice
Of course Foden & Bellingham can play together as they're great players. We have them both for the next 10+ years so in your view one of their England careers is effectively over?
They could play together behind a Haaland type who pins CB back to give them space but Kane, Foden and Bellingham all occupying the same 10 role is too unbalanced
He did during the game last night, and just after in the stands with a mic as he was interviewed. Of all the pundits, Shearer was the most critical last night.
He basically went on a rant saying none of the players are doing what they do for their clubs, and that Southgate needs to change something drastically to get the best out of the squad. He's been saying they should have attacking pace down the left since pre-tournament training. Gordon had almost as good a season as saka statistically, all while playing for a much poorer team in Newcastle. He's a hassle and causes problems. I definitely don't think shearer is Gareths mate who doesn't open his mouth.
What I like about this podcast is the understanding. The understanding of football. It's far more positive than negative which is a breath of fresh air. They understand the difficulties of a footballer, coach and all other facets of the game. Also the humour is nice to see :)
England do win a lot to be fair. They havent lost in the euro group stages for twenty years. They dont have a divine right to win the whole tournament.
@@2011hwalker they’ve not won an international trophy since 1966. With the squad they have now they really could (and should) have beaten Italy. They went 1-0 up and then sat off them rather than go for another to try and kill the game! I think they’re got the best squad in the tournament and with the right manager they could definitely win something.
These lot were happy to call out Ten Hag and speculate about his job immediately after he won the FA Cup + doubled down on it on the podcast. But when Gareth had 2 back to back performances like that, they retreated back to trepidatious narratives and very mildly critical
More like a season from hell. Kicked out of the German Cup early on by a third league team, not even second in the Bundesliga, and not even in the CL finals.
How is that Kane’s fault that Bayern didn’t win the league? 🤣🤣🤣 He scored 44 GOALS in 45 GAMES FFS! He joined when an INVINCIBLE team happened in the Bundesliga. So it’s Kane’s fault he scored 44 goals and Leverkusen lost 0 games… Yeah it’s all Harry‘s fault 😂😂😂 Clueless.
Saying Harry Kane "has never been massively mobile" and saying he should conserve energy by not coming back, while also saying he needs to lead an energetic press makes no sense. You're demonstrating one example of exactly Southgate's problem right now: he has really good players, but it's hard to get them all working in one system given their skill sets. Keep in mind, for the press to work, you need not only forward and mids who can press, but also defenders who can keep the line and jump in when necessary. England's defenders, minus Walker, don't really do that. Additionally, Trent in midfield is a difficult ask, but it's especially hard when Bellingham is also coming all the way back to play where Trent is, making that midfield to forward line connection much weaker. Their positions either need to change or they need to be more disciplined, but most of England's guys are not particularly disciplined, not only for the national team but for their clubs, and it shows when Southgate has to try to make do.
It also comes down to how enjoyable England are to watch. I'd rather see England lose 5-4 in a proper firefight than draw 1-1 against Denmark in a crappy show.
100 percent Its about playing good football I am sure most fans would not be so frustrated if we didn't win but lost trying to outscore a team and playing fluid fast football
I love this euro podcast vibe everybody is so relaxed a glass of wine or 5 and 2 top managers sitting chatting behind the scenes top notch content guys plz keep them coming
The digging out of Harry Kane is so poor.. He’s not pressing because that is obviously the instruction. Saka and Foden don’t press either when they do every week for club. Gareth is terrified of us going too gung ho. How about look at the real issues, no left side + no midfield balance.
What I wouldn’t give to listen to moyes and frank speaking their minds w no one listening over there. Man. Two great guys who call it like it is. No BS.
The reason we are in this position is because the media and pundits have backed Gareth for years because he is a good guy. It is clear he is not capable to managing this team.
And yet he has the best track record as an England manager in major torunaments of anybody in the last fifty years, and it's not even close. (The only other contender would be Venables, but he had a single tournament in charge.)
What a life, beautiful apartment, in the thick of the action and the wine is flowing. The David Moyes podcast was brilliant. I think Slovenia will be a banana skin guys.
really enjoyed having the lads in the background having there own separate banter and conversation occasionally chipping in. This and the overlap are the best things on football, far better than the crap sky puts up!
Great insight shared by Gary here, but the reality is that this theme has been happening for far too long. Southgate has had ample opportunity to progress the style of play and identity he wants, with the players available. To be experimenting with TAA in a midfield role - for the sake of trying to fit him in - as the tournament starts is insanity. You could essentially take the style of Bayern Munich to fit around Kane to ensure chances are created and he finishes them. Kane might as well not be in the team when that style of play is adopted. How do teams win tournaments? They go on the attack with the ability to put games to bed quickly scoring many goals and creating chances. We've gone 1-0 up against Denmark and tried to defend a lead. The only counter to Gary here is that this has been happening for years. Southgate has had chances to bury teams with the players he has had. Not just in setting the team up, but also in match decisions. One of England's brightest prospects - Cole Palmer - is sat watching the likes of Bowen, Eze and Gallagher be introduced to change a game. That in itself is ridiculous. Thankfully it'll be his last tournament and whoever comes in pretty much has a blueprint in how not to set the team up right.
Largely agree. I would say, though, that Bowen is sometimes what is needed. I rate Palmer but you can't slight Bowen in these moments because he's positive. Looks forward, gets forward, passes forward.
Micah, Trent doesn’t go to the byline and cross the ball at all anymore, hasn’t done it for at least two seasons for Liverpool, what he needs is runners in behind if you’re playing him in midfield. It’s ridiculous playing him there with a load of lads who are stationary, and that is not his fault at all
Think it's way off to be on Kane's back. He always presses the keeper and shadow covers one player. That's all he can do in most cases. It's on Rice Bellingham and Trent to be the ones pushing up.
Because he plays 2 holding midfielders, one of which isn't even a holding midfielder but clearly he is being told to do so (Trent), take him off and put Foden in centre with Bellingham then have Rice sit on his own in defence, put Gordon on the left.
@@jackgreenway4646 surely with 2 holding midfielders, that means your front 4 should stay FURTHER up the pitch, knowing they’ve got 2 guys covering for them?
@@jackgreenway4646it’s actually the opposite it’s because he plays no deep lying playmakers, put any of Rodri, Jorginho, Kroos etc next to Rice and I guarantee England keep possession. Rice is a box to box midfielder and Arteta regularly picks Jorginho or Partey to get the best from Rice as an 8

Gareth hasn't transformed English football's fortunes; it's the improvements in technical training at the grassroots level that have made the difference for England. Gareth is merely a negative influence, hindering our chances.
Let’s be fair, between 2008-16 England were absolute dogshit. Not only were the players bad but the team culture stank. Say what you want about the better quality of players now but the England environment has been much better since Southgate came in.
The Spain v Italy game last night was a clear example of the differences in tactical nous between managers ... England and Spain are probably fairly equal in terms of attacking and defensive talent, yet Spain spent pretty much the whole game on the front foot, and it paid off. I can't see Southgate changing his mindset now, so the only way we'll make the best of this latest "golden generation" is by getting rid of Southgate. Edit: as I was typing Gary made the same observation (other than the getting rid of Southgate one) 🙂
Italy is a former shadow of it's self. At this time! Bad stadiums, no money and not enough children playing. It will change. Every country goes through it. Spain is lethal because of it's African wingers. Without them they are just above nediocre. That's the reality. Those wingers bring everyone into the game. If they can't score against a shit Italian team.. they will get caught out eventually. Especially with that defense! They have faced no pressure yet.
@@tdmprofit3708 Nonsense. Last European cup neither of those wingers were in the team and they were also better than Italy. They also won the nations league without either of them. You have a lot growing up to do with your african comment.
The difference is Spain have Rodri controlling the game, Rice doesn’t do that for club (Jorginho does) and Bellingham doesn’t control the game either for club (Kroos does). If England want to control the game then they should play a player who does that for their club

Foden just had his best ever season. Won player of the year playing down the middle but he has him on the left.
Whilst i do think he's shit himself in the foot by taking so much inexperience. The best of that inexperience. Cole Palmer and Mainoo (have barely had a look in)
@@rhyschadwick3269You got any footage of him shitting himself in the foot?
Kane is a great goalscorer but we need pace, Trent should be playing rb with Watkins /toney making those runs then swap foden with Bellingham, foden is wasted out left. Kane either needs to be dropped or have a pacey striker up front with him. How the hell are we meant to beat anyone when kane keeps dropping in deep. Negative football does not win tournaments. The whole set up stinks
These Euros pods are some of the best yet. Just pure chaotic energy after all the travelling, drinking and mixing with different folk.
Completely agree my problem is I know my opinion doesn't matter so I try and get behind them to enjoy it more but it's just so shit 😢😂
Is Gary really this boring😅
"as mad as most england supporters have been for the last 7-8 years England have made semis and finals....goodness me, have you seen englands tournament record from 1980-2015?!?! It was dire. Why do england fans view as anything but a trophy as failure. They have NEVER won it in the modern era.
Not a single one of these people ever bring up the fact that Trent was the creator, in one of Liverpool's best ever teams, from right back.
Trying to shoehorn Trent in as a midfielder just so Kyle Walker can 'slot in' at right back is f**King preposterously stupid.

Spain can press with morata yet england can't do it with kane
We’re too deep for Kane to press. Plus all this pressing stuff is such guff when we have the players to dominate the possession.
Morata always had more pace than Kane
Spain have superior technical players….
Spain were 1-0 up and were still attacking Italy on 90+ mins. We stopped doing that as soon as we went 1-0 up!
Morata has been a runner his whole career
Seeing as Alan’s not there I’ll say it: get Gordon in there

@@Kyteasahighit can't be worse than Foden performance at LW

Sorry but that hasn’t been part of his game for a few years now, so why would you want to shoehorn that into him halfway through a tournament?
If we want our striker to play that way, surely the better option is to just start Watkins? He’s proven he can do that exact job all season long.

I feel sorry for Trent. England needs runners upfront for trent to work in the midfield. So that he can ping them long passes. But there's nothing... England has the best squad. But the manager oouuff!
i’m of a similar opinion, his head is always up and scanning but there’s no one to advance the ball to
Kane is the problem. He can’t run. Plays as a 10 with no runners beyond
Germany, France, Portugal are arguably better this England team is a bit overhyped Spain also has a good balanced squad
Trents not good enough to play in midfield at the top level.
Kane has got lazy playing for Bayern who dominate the ball and play teams that sit back. He has never been fast but he has always demanded the ball and been aggressive. I have seen none of that this Euros

Love to see Gary here, not being the safe presenter, but showing his ball knowledge and what he really thinks. Spot on
It's not a conundrum, ffs.

That’s the best one you’ve ever done. Great atmosphere great banter. Keep that format !!
Moyes is definitely more pragmatic, had more success, and can actually keep a team in the top flight.
Id take a swap for moyes for the rest of this tournament 😂😂
I have to say, I am usually Gary Lineker's biggest critic, but I agree with everything he is saying here.
He should have taken Chilwell and Doughty. Massive mistake!
Of course Foden & Bellingham can play together as they're great players. We have them both for the next 10+ years so in your view one of their England careers is effectively over?
bellinghams legs turned to lead after 20mins of the first game
They could play together behind a Haaland type who pins CB back to give them space but Kane, Foden and Bellingham all occupying the same 10 role is too unbalanced
We didn't notices Gary's blooper until we all heard rio say "that was smooth" during the transition lol

Can you tell Shearer to actually call out Southgates incompotence on commentary. He doesn't represent the nations thoughts
He's Southgate's mate from their England days, PC and likes his easy job on the BBC..no chance he'll do it.🤑
3-5-2 incoming..
Odd comment, you clearly didn't watch the match

as a Scot, I can’t believe England still have Southgate. Imagine if they had a really attacking coach, they’d win the lot!

It's such a strange comment given that the big problem is that Southgate is trying to fit too many attacking players into the team.

Kane didn't win anything with bayern... who had won the German league for more than 10 seasons in a row... soon as he joins the team they don't win
The commenters on here only read memes and have not watched a single Bayern game
What’s with the upwards inflection after every sentence?!

This is refreshing journalism. More of this please lads

Rice is a box to box midfielder and Arteta regularly picks Jorginho or Partey to get the best from Rice as an 8
I'm a minute and six into the video and you got my like already lads. That fade to grey when Micah said the pasta was overcooked was a master stroke!! Gary's face!! 😂 Way more entertaining than the game itself, live your work guys!! 👍
If I was Trent I’d retire. He is being made a scapegoat for this England team it’s shocking
Spot on, wasting his talent! Getting subbed at the 55 min mark, Southgate is a clown!
Can David Moyes just get drunk and heckle every week? Love to see the former boss having fun! ⚒️
Gareth hasn't transformed English football's fortunes; it's the improvements in technical training at the grassroots level that have made the difference for England. Gareth is merely a negative influence, hindering our chances.
I think you should do just a tiny bit of research before commenting and being absolutely wrong.
Let’s be fair, between 2008-16 England were absolute dogshit. Not only were the players bad but the team culture stank. Say what you want about the better quality of players now but the England environment has been much better since Southgate came in.
Love the honesty of this podcast. And that’s why it’s relatable and resonates with the public.
Stop crying 😭 Just Sack Southgate in the middle of the tournament like Ivory Coast 🇨🇮
And England can win the Euro 2024.
Great vibes on this one!😂 Such a shame Shearer was travelling lol.
I don't think Italy currently have a match for the Spanish front line, mainly their wingers.
@@tdmprofit3708 those wingers are born and bred Spanish.
Hahahaha this pod featuring red wine was hilarious. Loved having the managers chiming in here and there. It’s cheered me up after last night. Cheers boys!
It’s very odd how you are focusing so much on Kane yet still failing to call out the manager
But he has a point. If Kane stays high then defenders stay with him. It forces us to play higher.
@@MovieTrailerDatabaseKane's positioning comes from Southgate though?
@@MovieTrailerDatabaseKane needs runners either side of him that’s why Gordon needs to play on the left instead of foden
@@MovieTrailerDatabase In the press conference Southgate actually said that they don't play high press fully because of physicality related issues. I don't know what this exactly means but it seems to me it must be a reference to Harry Kane, as well as, possibly, others.
Did you watch the video?
Southgate wears a welding mask when peeling onions.
So ten hag was right about southgate?
They literally said he was right in that last podcast when they talked about it lol
@@Chigz10 big meeks said he was disrespectful 🤣🤣
@@eoinoconnor8996he also said ‘he has got a point though’ and laughed. their issue was him saying it as a fellow manager, they always agreed with him
@@Chigz10 big meeks was talking rubbish
@@eoinoconnor8996 as are you by acting like they said he wasn’t right when he stated the obvious that everyone’s been saying for ages and they literally said he’s got a point
I love seeing Lineker like this. Giving his opinions, having a drink, letting his hair down.
If Harry Kane was a true captain he’d invite Southgate for a meal and discussion then lock him in a basement somewhere to unshackle the England team.
Southgate was on about not having a natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips but what he is really missing is Jordan Henderson tucking him in and reading him bedtime stories.
Talking about the high press, Jaime Vardy who plays for Leicester. Because Vardy is so athletic and fast he press the opposition’s defence which in turn creates space for the midfield to come up.
