Storm in a tea cup. Gary and co. were spot on with their critique and Kane answered as you would expect. Let's see how Harry gets on in a few years time when he's a pundit at an England game.
As is always the issue with stuff like this, England played shit, that’s the truth, regardless of result and our standing in the group, their performance against Denmark was garbage and there’s no getting around that. The question posed to Kane and how it was worded was done purely to try and create some drama and I commend both Kane and Lineker for dealing with it calmly and professionally.
Alan Hansen was the face of MOTD for me as a kid, even as a NUFC and England fan, the respect I have for him as a player and a pundit is so high, he's a true legend of the game, so pleased to hear he's on the mend. God bless him.
Possibly because if this was an essential criterion for punditry, we would all have to sit round a table touching hands and hoping to evoke the spirit world.
I can understand where Kane is coming from, but it is also a pundits job to be honest. England's performances have honestly been quite shit considering the available talent
@@DerekLangdon I'm not 'defending' him. Just saying how I understand that some of the (younger) lads might be affected by it and that playing in a major tournament is tough, basically what Kane said. Also, being rich doesn't make you immune to criticism, especially coming from players they probably looked up to. But then again, I agreed with Lineker and England have been shit but I can see what it is like for the players as well
Not sure if you read the comments but you should check out Declan's interview with ITV.....He literally admits the tactic is a LOW BLOCK!!!! And that they were told stats about less goals and shots conceded or something....This is proof that we are defensively setup and Gareth is relying on the talent up top to get us out. He is petrified of losing than anything else!!!
The players should just fuck the managers tactics off. If Southgate is willing to lie about tactics to take the blame off of himself, then why should the lads set up in a way which will on bring themselves criticism? Southgate will be gone in a few weeks anyway!
Its obvious to everyone who has watched them play that those 2 midfielders have been told by the manager to not move, England effectively 4 centre backs, both games you can watch those midfielders stick on top of the defenders and refuse to move....... at this point anyone who believes southgate isnt telling them to play like this needs to check in at the doctors
You are making a ridiculous assumption that teams use exactly 1 tactic for 90 mins straight and do nothing else. Every team will low block and high press at different times, Rice said their low block had been one of the best in the tournament and they needed to bring that further forward, he said that their high press is going to be better. He didn't contradict anything Southgate said.
Fabulous news regarding Alan Hansen's recovery and confirmation of convalescence at home - much praise to both Gary and Alan Sh. + MOTD staff for their earnest, touching best wishes to the Liverpool FC legend (and that's from a Palace fan)
Gary and Alan (and others) have gone up a huge amount in my estimation following the Denmark match. Thank you! Being honest, being relevant, saying what you see -- this is what every pundit should be doing. It is not a pundit's job to be a cheerleader, to drone on with platitudes, or to say nothing out of fear of upsetting their mates in the game. It was the same as Gary Neville talking about Ronaldo in his second stint at United. Ronaldo was upset (diddums) but it is a pundit's job to tell it as they see it. It's not personal. It was wonderful and refreshing to hear the discussions after the Denmark match because it was true and honest and needed to be said. Very disappointed in Kane trying to turn punditry into an old boys club and/or a psychological session for players. No, no, it is the manager's, coaches and team staff's job to deal with the players and ensure they are prepared and mentally healthy not a pundit's. If you can't take criticism then you are in the wrong job.
It absolutely was NOT a penalty. Watch it at any speed you like but focus on Armstong. If you can do frame by frame it makes it much easier to see. He gets between number 6 and the ball, and there is considerable space between them, with 6 focussed on the ball the whole time. Armstrong jumps back into 6 while grabbing the front of 6's shirt with his left hand and then spins both of them to the ground. If you just focus on 6 all you see it that halfway through Armstong's judo roll, 6's right arm reaches across Armstrong. That arm did literally nothing to impede Armstrong nor bring both of them to the ground.
He didn't jump into him, he just slowed down. The defender had his arm wrapped around Armstrong and took his legs away. His right knee went into Armstrongs left calf and buckled his leg. Definitely a penalty.
Kane is just full of himself. When Gary and Allan speak, you sit down and listen.. even you are Ronaldo or Messi, let alone Henry Kane who has done anything really, who is just above average striker and who no where near Gary and Allan.
Definitely so, he's been given the details by some England media beaut & trotted out the bs as ordered. It's a decent squad with a below par manager who has squandered his time with the players & once again we arrive at a tournament well off the pace & not even close to the tactical organisation of the other major teams. Trent is a really good player, as is Rice & Bellingham is World Class. I've never seen them look so bad as they did against Denmark & that's down to Southgate.
I was totally surprised by the mention of Southend United. Thank you, chaps. It's been a torrid few years, and the club has been a merciful judge away from going extinct more than a few times. It's another story of poor ownership.
Look at the difference between how the Scotland team (same number of goals as England by the way) reacted to their loss. Andy Robertson coming out right and saying they weren't good enough, and apologising to the country for letting them down. Compare that with the England, who have far more funding and talent, and it's a pity party. It's frankly embarrassing, and I sincerely hope Gary and Alan et al don't revert back to Good Bunch of Lads FC.
Scotland didn't win a game, and the goals were own goals. England has not been knocked out yet. You're comparing 2 completely different situations ! Not to mention the fact that England haven't lost yet.
@@ynwa3476 Didn't realise you get more points if it's a goal or own goal. No, England haven't been knocked out yet. However, England are 5th in the FIFA World Rankings; whereas the mighty Serbia, who we managed to destroy with an amazing 1-0 are ranked 32nd, and the giants of Denmark who we managed to draw in a very exciting 1-1 are ranked 21st. Scotland, on the other hand, are ranked 39th. I would say they have far less expectation on their shoulders, yet when they do badly they own up to it. They know they could have played better, and they should have played better. But poor little me England with poor little me Harry Kane on 500k a week doesn't like it when ex-professionals dare criticise them, even in the most tame ways possible. If they think the way Gary and Alan described their performance is unkind, they should walk into any pub in England and see what fans are saying. @@ynwa3476 Couldn't agree more - I think Southgate is of the mindset that he'd rather win 1-0 than 5-3. Which ultimately leads to very boring football.
All valid points but I was hoping you’d talk a bit more about the pressure that comes with wearing an England shirt which Kane alluded to being part of the problem. It’s easy to pin it all on Southgate or tactics but fear/nerves clearly played a part in the crap performance vs Denmark. Whether they should be able to handle the pressure is another question! let’s just hope they can overcome these mental hurdles and turn it around vs Slovenia. Come on England!
Thank You Gents for telling the truth of what we all could see. Being a Sunderland fan you have no idea how hard it is for me to agree with & respect anything Shearer says, yous really dont. Kane should get a grip and start performing let’s be honest England have been absolutely shocking to watch for over a year now so so bad!! The euros was actually the first time I’ve watched a full 90 mins of England since the World Cup. It’s depressing the way we play. But mr Harry yeah obviously Kane needs to act like a captain and get these players playing
Whilst I think I know what you mean, Italia 90 euro 96 they had a lot of good players however there’s never a cohesion within the team always individualistic. We always have had good even great players but we can never get the system correct consistently in order to mount a challenge where top teams are scared to play us. We have weak spots tactics and defensively. But let’s stay positive we not been beat yet. Come on England.
This isn’t only happening to Southgate’s England, it’s happened to every England team since I’ve been watching football when Don Revie was manager, every team & manager the same thing, & yet our press & media go on about us winning tournaments & games 3-0 & putting unnecessary pressure on our teams. It’s arrogant & something that they do all the time & they really need to stop making ridiculous predictions & stop underestimating good international opposition teams
How it wasn't a penalty for Scotland I do not know! Hope the Hungarian lad is okay after his seizures too. And unless we (England) put in a shift against Slovenia, I'm not holding out hope!
That could have been the third penalty of the game. Two for Hungary previously (one with a red) and the Armstrong one. But it was by far the least obvious one of the three.
Because instead of having a shot the Scotland played jumped into the Hungarian defender trying to buy a penalty. Never a penalty we've seen these happen all the time and we'll done referee for spotting it.
The thing is with whomever gives an opinion, there still should be sound reasoning behind. Taking all angles into account. If you can back up what you say with sound reasoning. Then there is no issue in my opinion. great show
I understand why Kane decided to bite back a bit but when I watched the Denmark game with four of my friends all of us were saying during the game the same as what the pundits did after the game. I know we’re all emotional because it’s England but I think it was completely fair what they said because we really shouldn’t be struggling this much in this group. Southgate also needs to get criticism because he gambled on TAA and Shaw and it honestly baffles me why he didn’t take another left back. Before the tournament Joe Gomes was rumoured to fill in for Shaw but he hasn’t had a look in and that position is really causing us problems.
Bless you Gary for highlighting Southend Utd current plight. I remember when I was an art student in the town in the mid 1980’s, and on the way to college walking past Bobby Moore on Victoria Avenue, he being manager of the side then... but yea absolute thrill and honour to have seen him then, and even more reason, what with his connection to the club, to resolve the situation they have there.
Gary and Alan are saying what ALL England fans are thinking. The team deserve the criticism they receive. If they don’t like it - play better! Either that or replace them with mentally tougher players. 🏴
Not necessarily. (First off, please ignore the other idiotic reply above from whoever it was) I think they took humbrage with the word 'sh¡t' coming from a pundit. Soft if you aks me. Gary is really comedian.. "Croatia never had a team to go, long, in a tournament" .. can't he remember the last world cup? When they knocked England out, and got to the final!!!
As a German football fan: Which player wouldn't be confused when your team is playing with 3 right-backs and no left-backs because your manager forgot to nominate more than 1 left-back ? And the rest of the tactics are complete trash aswell. Who is playing 4-4-2 with a talented squad in 2024 ? If Georgia were to play against Spain that way, I would understand it somewhat, but England vs. Denmark ? Why are several players playing completely out of position when you could quite easily play them where they're best (especially Trent, Bellingham and Foden) ? I can't really judge other aspects of Southgate's managing style, but in terms of tactics, I'm sorry, but I'm giving him an F so far in this tournament.
Yup, he's messed up on the left-hand side. Shaw isn't fit, so who can play the left side and get to the line for a cross? Nobody has done so far. If this was the “plan”, it needed redundancy, but he cut Grealish and Rashford. Now England is utterly predictable, feeding Saka all the time. Having to hit balls right and nothing cross field, its not easy. Good strategy and tactics are UNEXPECTED, not wholly predictable.
Well we play 4-2-3-1 but yes, players are being played out of position. Everyone can see it. Trent should be dropped, Jude next to Rice, Foden in the middle then Gordon on the left.
Certain members of the press don't like GL's politics and REALLY don't like the perceived influence he has. Any excuse to diminish it is seized upon - hence the comment "shouldn't he stick to selling crisps?".
Lineker’s problem is that he’s a fairly intelligent bloke commenting on a sport that is watched heavily by thickoes. And thickoes usually gravitate to right wing politics.
What Gary and Alan have said about England/Southgate is what many England fans have said about Southgate since the Euro 2020 final. If anything, they’re late to the party.
I've never seen such a great England squad, full of individual talent, from teams playing awesome league games, play so woefully and uninspiring. They play like they are scared to lose. And I believe that is the mentality of the manager. Pretty sure the boys could lock him in the dressing room, sort a plan of attack and implement it. Also, they'd be better off listening to the pundits than the manager.
@@the0nlytrueprophet942 old enough to know better and still young enough to be pissed at another crappy performance. Yeah, it's the same story, but these players, in my opinion are the best we've had in a long time. They should do better.

They should listen to Declan and respond to that, it's a very good interview BUT it could so easily come back to haunt him. They should really name the pundits they are having issues with because when you listen to Gary and Alan, yes they are critical but they are not ripping them apart and offer positive constructive feedback, would be nice to see the full picture.

I'm a big fan of this podcast, but I don't think you needed to respond to Kane's comments. You reacted to the Denmark game, Kane answered a direct question. That should have been the end of it.
Kane coming out and complaining about the pundits' constructive criticism just highlights how weak we are as a team. He might be one of the greatest finishers, but he's not captain material. If Southgate wants any chance of salvaging something from this tournament, he needs to be brave, bench Kane, and shake things up. Maybe that will get the team playing better and show them who's boss. Honestly, I think the damage was done years ago, and we've never looked like a team that other countries fear. I hope the FA finally steps up and hires a manager who isn't just a yes man!

I remember the buzz and excitement in my school when we got promoted to the championship, I remember the mood of the town after that historic FA cup win against Man United and the Freddie Eastwood free-kick! Southend is more than just a football club, it's history is woven into the fabric of that town, and it offers something beyond the material. Growing up in a poor family, getting bullied, walking down a high street that felt drab and neglected, it was hard to feel any sense of aspiration. Football has the power to bring a sense of community and togetherness to places like this that desperately need it. These are moments that the young impressionable me would have never experienced if it wasn't for that club. I'm praying for a good outcome.

Which woud mean that Southgate was lying in his last presser after the Denmark game when he claimed that the low block was not an official tactic.
@@Nr4747 well either he is lying or Declan is and why would Declan have a reason to lie
You were both one hundred spot on. England were shocking. 😢
Definitely a penalty.

if u have to explain it this much it’s probably a penalty

Armstrong grabbed his shirt, which led to them both falling... Definitely not a penalty.
The thing is with whomever gives an opinion, there still should be sound reasoning behind. Taking all angles into account. If you can back up what you say with sound reasoning. Then there is no issue in my opinion. great show

I was waiting for this, 2 days off... looking forward for more euro updates.

Gary and Alan need retiring, both showing their true colours since leaving football, big egos and narcissistic!
Great words about Southend! Let’s hope we survive
Kane is actually bang on what he said though. He’s obviously had a stinker so far, but the amount of people just chatting pure shit to headline grab. It's just the current state of modern day football, where shit headlines get all the clicks and therefore the money, and not at all about supporting the team.
Or just be focused and not care about what people say on faking podcasts? Football vulture or any sport culture has always been toxic thats why they get paid for it to take it as it comes. They get paid for the bullshit football they have played their whole life.
@@fugaziishime you seem emotional mate
@@bcat845 i despise harry kane. The guy is always blaming everything else but himself. Every big match he has been in he always disappoints
Good to hear of Southend and the seriousness of it
