I have to be honest, I owe Kobbie Mainoo an apology. For most of the last year, I've completely dismissed calls about him being "better than Scholes" or whatever, largely because I saw it as the typical Manchester United hype. Having watched him with more attention in this tournament - the last couple of games in particularly - he is absolutely excellent. His creativity last night was great, but also his willingness to track back and steal the ball back was massive. For all the talk of Nico Williams Jr, Lamine Yamal, Jamal Musiala and Arda Güler this tournament, Mainoo deserves to be a part of that conversation.
I don’t think any of us united fans think hes better than scholesy - a united legend himself. But hes shown us even in the preseason of 23-24 season, the quality this kid has. Then shown us throughout the season, despite the magnitude of the game, how good he is. Some may get overexcited but its because the sky is the limit for him and just how good he can become. A generational talent! 🔥
Watkins and Toney have sat on the bench waiting and when they got their chance in this tournament they both delivered. So much quality in these players, even the subs are top class. Come on England one more game be bold and keep creating chances.
Lineker was one of the very best at getting in front of defenders....arriving at the 'moment' that counts -- he knows what he is talking about! Respect!
I think it was not the Koemans' fault, especially Ronald. He, conversely, saved England from final tournament humiliation. What a beautiful strike!! The Netherlands and Norway were the better teams back then.
@mardimcfly90210 - You're right. It was actually Seaman's fault. Stood at the corner flag stroking his moustache whilst the nation screamed to get to his right. And then he let Bergkamp's daisy-cutter under him. We had shit keepers for years and it started with him. 2002 he was exposed again.
Difference between rich people and the rest of us (or his terms of employment with the beebs included flights home). Bet none of the fans out there are back and forth.
We've been in germany since the 14th June, so many ups and downs. But that england performance today was really special overall. From my view in the top tier I'd say we absolutely dominated that game, the Dutch had 15 minutes where they were on top but never looked like scoring. I've been to every tournament since 98 and I've honestly never been so proud of the england team. Super ollie watkins
If you want an England-Spain final reference, look no further than the 2017 U17 World Cup final. England were 0-2 down in half an hour. Won 5-2. A certain Phil Foden scored twice. And an M. Guehi scored once :)
Congratulations England for going to the final from a spanish person. I think although England's performances have been poor in the tournement, you have improved in the last two games and yesterday England was the better team overall. On Sunday, I am sure it will be a great game. I hope Spain can win but I am sure England will have their chances and it will be a close game.
I expect Spain to win - they have played better so far in the tournament. But let's hope that on Sunday the best team on the day wins. When the best team wins, then football wins.

Every man and his dog literally knew we needed Kane of with Watkins on and palmer on literally everyone , he left it 10 mins to late for me but Gareth is one of the luckiest mangers to exist
Well it was only 10 mins of pressure from Holland before he made the change to release it so unless he knew what Holland were going to do before they did. He made the change in perfect time.. clearly
@@ForTheLoveOfTheGame-vp8pg i would argue that it was Rice getting bumped off the ball like he's a 5ft 7 winger instead of a 6ft 2 defensive midfielder that cost us the goal
I was at peace to going out to the Slovaks until the Jude miracle moment... after that, to still be in felt like a bonus. So even when the Swiss took the lead, I'd already accepted being out... but the resilience this England team have shown in all the knockout matches has made me believe again. Underdogs on Sunday... yes... but it's not always the favourite that takes the cup... need to evoke the spirits of Denmark 1992, Greece 2004 and Portugal 2016!!
So the penalty…. Ask yourself is that a foul anywhere else on the pitch? Secondly, Lineker is right we have been waiting for a bit of luck go our way. 1986 Maradona handball, 1990 Waddle off the post. 1996 Anderton off the post and Gazza millimetres from winning it sliding in. 1998 Campbell disallowed goal. 2004 Campbell disallowed goal. 2010 Lampard 3 ft over the line!
Amen... I'm the most cynical English fan out there.... I have been trying to get this across to my Dutch friends... We don't get much go our way, so boy, we will take this one. I remember Maradona. It wasn't just the handball.... If you picture the 2nd goal, the reason 5 of England's players didn't put a tackle in , was because they had all been booked and given away weak free kicks beforehand. The Ref that day was worse than the dodgy German geezer last night. It was a shocking decision...but it ain't our fault. Blame the cloggy hating German officials.
Links, Meeks, Hazza....I applaud your professionalism for getting this episode out to us after a win like that. I know you guys get paid the big bucks but still, the fans thank you for this work! 👏
Was in Dortmund yesterday, absolutely incredible, unbelievable, no voice left, head pounding but worth every second! Fans were superb, massively outnumbered by the Dutch no room in any fanzones/bars, had to watch the game in a pizza restaurant surrounded by dutch fans & just 6 England fans, sang them out the restaurant :)) Watkins in the last minute, everything he deserved. Mainoo unbelievable. "were not going home, we're not going home, we're not going we're not going, we're not going home"
What a night. What a game. What a feeling. Great first 45 minutes. Perfect Subs made by Southgate when we needed it. Great goal by Watkins from Palmer. Great enthusiasm by Southgate at full time. COME ON ENGLAND 🏴
Can we have that same ref in the final then - how ever much it coasts! I have been watching football for over 50 years and NEVER seen such a bad ref! he should be banned - oh wait a minute he was!!
We didn't just stop playing in the second half, give credit to Koeman and the Netherlands they changed their system because they realised we were bossing midfield
I love watching Kobbie Mainoo play football. A wonderful breath of fresh air for Utd & England. Watkins goal was delightful to watch. He's had a great season.
I'm from Russia and a big fan of the England national team. I've been rooting for the England national team since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. My idol is Gary Lineker. I am very glad that we beat Slovakia, Switzerland and Netherlands. Go ahead, three lions. We are going for the european cup. Greetings from Russia...)))
That 1st half performance was what we've all been waiting for: exciting, fast paced, forward passing and Foden Kane and Bellingham making things happen in the final third. If we can play like that for the whole final then we can definitely win it.
Credit where it's due Gary, England are the reigning U21 European champions, winning on foreign soil: Georgia. Also England won the Fifa Under 17 World Cup in India in 2017.
Being Dutch, I appreciate the honesty about the penalty, and the remark about needing a bit of luck. That being said: the better team won. Good luck in the Final! Looking at the teams player v player, it should be an interesting one!
If thats a pen we're all in trouble. We have to he honest about these things, it was a poor night from the ref and VAR. It highlights the knots the officials are tying themselves in with what does and doesnt constitute a foul.
A high reckless tackle, that got nowhere near the ball and could have seriously injured an opponent. IT WAS A PENALTY EVERYDAY .... educate yourself on the rules of football.
At first I thought no penalty, then the more I watched it the more I could see why it was given. I think if the defender comes in from the side without the studs up he gets away with it. It's the studs up at that height which I think was deemed to be dangerous play. That's why VAR referred it. Can totally see why people are pissed about it though as at first glance it looks soft.
Brilliant podcast fella’s love listening to your views on the game and your analysis of the play. Maybe something else to mention with Alan tomorrow around the penalty decision is the footage of Saka’s hand ball I think before the “Foul” on Kane. Whatever happened however like you said Gary , we have had so many bad decisions go against us in many many games we have played before so to have one go our way for a change we’re going to take it all day long.. Again a great listen tonight 👍🏽
Unlike every other villa fan on here I was horrified when Ollie came on…I screamed at the telly…”he plays for villa…villa players ALWAYS miss penalties for England…ALWAYS” thank GOD I have no idea what I’m talking about…GO ON ENGLAND!!!
The lucky break was getting on the the easy side of the tournament imo. Just imagine England having to play Spain/Germany or Portugal/France leading up to the final.
I think the Dutch defence had become used to marking the immobile Kane and Watkins was their worst nightmare in terms of movement and threat in behind, he shocked them with his intent and speed of strike. I don’t give Southgate credit for the change, it was screaming out for this and moreover, it should have been made earlier in this game and competition on the whole.
So you don't give credit to the manager for making the change when he was the only person who could make the change? You won't give him credit because the change wasn't made when you wanted it to be made? And you won't give him credit for learning from his mistakes in earlier games and putting subs on much sooner? Dude - that's some bitterness you have there.
@@Dingbotz . The change was needed from 5/10 minutes into the second half, Kane was static as he has been the entire tournament.. should I give credit to someone who puts out a fire and saves one room in the house when he’s had a hose in his hands watching the place burn ?
@@DingbotzSouthgate has a terrible record when it comes to watching games drifting and turn against England between the 55-75th minutes in the game. If he made the Watkins sub at the 60th minute the game wouldn’t have drifted so long and England would not have conceded as many chances as his pressing and runs in behind changed the game. Southgate’s inability to change the game when it’s starting to drift is why he’s lost against Croatia,Italy and France. We just want him to take the steps to succeed.
@@stevenphillips4494 both teams had made changes at half time and needed time to see how they played out - making changed after 5-10 mins would have been ridiculous. Your analogy is flawed and I think you know it. He didn't save one room - he saved the entire house and unlike in previous games, he didn't wait for a fire to break out first - instead he took action to ensure a fire couldn't ignite. I'm not saying Southgate is perfect but to deny him credit for learning from his previous mistakes (which cost England Euro 2021) and for being proactive instead of reactive, putting subs on at half-time when he previously waited until injuries or injury-time, is just bitterness. You have to give credit where credit is due.
@@karmaascendant3936 I agree totally about Croatia, Italy and France. He lost us at least one trophy (Euro 2021). I am just saying we need to be balanced and fair. Did you ever expect him to make a sub at half time and another after 79 mins which involved hauling off his talisman and putting on 2 forwards? No and neither did I so let's give him so credit for finally doing what we had been calling for all tournament.
When are we going to face facts? Harry Kane is past his best, and his lack of pace/willingness to stretch the play significantly hinders Englands midfield. We are much better with a striker who forces defences out of their comfort zone.
I’m not sure he’s past his best. He’s the top scorer in Europe. I think it’s a case of this system doesn’t suit him. I agree this team would be better with a striker who stretches the oppositions back line.
Kane is a log ..and is more suited to club football...but Would U drop him? No Play him off the bench? No Start him then sub at half time yes Will be his last tournament and Watkins and Toney will get their chance going forward
ten hag deserves credit for mainoo look back at interviews with ten hag at the very first pre season, in his first few months in the job he kept talking about mainoo and clearly wanted to build the team around him. its much harder to see a good midfielder then a good attacker at youth level. so credit to him
I thought of Graham Taylor (r.i.p). As a little boy in 93 i was hurt by Koeman, I was hurt that England weren't going to the USA WC, 1990 was the first WC i watched and i cried with Gazza and then i was looking forward to England in USA 1994 , but Koeman and a dodgy ref stole that. & as a MUFC fan I'm so happy the world is getting to see what Kobbie Mainoo is all about :)

Gareth Southgate is a very good man manager but he is also the first England manager to benefit from the reorganisation of the FA youth academy system that Greg Dyke set up the he was head of the FA. This means that they have all known each other for a long time, they respect each other and they work for each other. As recent an England player as Jamie Vardy played a game with Harry Kane and he'd never played with him before. This will never happen again and is a major part of Gareth's success.
Watkins has to start for me, he was brilliant and scored one of the best goals of the tournament last night. Kane has been such a disappointment, you shouldn't play just because of past glories.
this Spanish team is Brazil 1970 level - due to the wingers they add a dimension to the game not there in 2008 tikky takky, the final will be like 1970 final - 4-1 (like Brazil ' Italy final in Mexico) or something like that. Lets see how this ages !!! :-) But Spain are scarily good.
@@brendanroberts4866Spain have been the best team at the EUROs but they’re not actually a star studded teams in terms of quality. It’s essentially superstars vs an actual team and I reckon it’ll be close with Spain edging it.
Agreed. I watched the France vs Spain Semi Final. If France had better Strikers up front, then it would have been a different night for Spain. I think England can pull this off, if they step up their level in the Final.
Spain are looking very tasty but have won by only 1 goal in several games- against France it could have easily gone the other way if France hadn’t been so wasteful in front of goal. They may well come out as victors but they aren’t unbeatable

It was Scholes himself who spoke about Mainoo being better than he was at 18/19 years old
I don’t think any of us united fans think hes better than scholesy - a united legend himself. But hes shown us even in the preseason of 23-24 season, the quality this kid has. Then shown us throughout the season, despite the magnitude of the game, how good he is. Some may get overexcited but its because the sky is the limit for him and just how good he can become. Scholes wasn't that good at the same age.

Respect!

Not to mention all the penalties we never had and sending offs that should’ve happened

Foden was class last night but that was his FIRST good performance of the tournament
Watkins and palmer must start on Sunday 👍
If thats a pen we're all in trouble. We have to he honest about these things, it was a poor night from the ref and VAR. It highlights the knots the officials are tying themselves in with what does and doesnt constitute a foul.
Technically it was, studs up and caught him, but you never see them given usually.
A high reckless tackle, that got nowhere near the ball and could have seriously injured an opponent. IT WAS A PENALTY EVERYDAY .... educate yourself on the rules of football.
@@jaybe2908 Technically it wasn't, Saka handled the ball twice leading up to it, but that wasn't even looked at by the VAR.
@@wbsMulletthe reason you came to that conclusion is because it was slowed down and viewed umpteen times and made it something it wasn't.

The lucky break was getting on the the easy side of the tournament imo. Just imagine England having to play Spain/Germany or Portugal/France leading up to the final.
Watkins finish was absolutely outstanding but his run was just as good, pace and directness. Brilliant goal!
Kane is a log ..and is more suited to club football...but
Would U drop him? No
Play him off the bench? No

Spain look good but they don’t look 2008 good. This is winnable, COME ON BOYS! 🏴
this Spanish team is Brazil 1970 level - due to the wingers they add a dimension to the game not there in 2008 tikky takky, the final will be like 1970 final - 4-1 (like Brazil ' Italy final in Mexico) or something like that. Lets see how this ages !!! :-) But Spain are scarily good.
@@brendanroberts4866Spain have been the best team at the EUROs but they’re not actually a star studded teams in terms of quality.
