I think both the old format and the new format have their own appeals. It’s baffling how Southgate can be the only one in the country who can’t see Bellingham playing next to Rice. And putting one of the lads who have played at LW all season for their clubs. Solves the balance issue completely.
I know, it is so basic. Bellingham picking it up on the half turn and driving forward would make us much more dangerous. Southgate is embarrassingly under equipped tactically. I would consider replacing him with Mainoo or even Gallagher if he played like that for me. Do you have any idea why he wasn’t trying to receive the ball from the defence in the later stages of the match?
Totally agree with you. Micah's team is the one I'd play but I'd keep Saka in there and bring Palmer on to absolutely run riot against tired legs in the second half, he'd leave the defenders on their backside
I think Southgate might have thought "I'am going to put the players where prefer to play". And Belligham has became a monster in Madrid playing up front and scoring goals. ... The difference maker in the second half was Mainoo. He was always making himself available to receive the ball on the left, on the right, in front of the defence and even making forward runs. He appeared to be the most proactive midfielder England had in that second half.
I’ve only been saying this from day 1 the solution to our midfield is literally kobie Mainoo he is everything we need in a player that breaks the lines with the ball weather it be a pass or beating a player he’s been doing it for united the whole second half of the season !
Funny how every Englishman who knows an ounce about football has known for years Southgate is terrible.... except for the English, ex player football pundits.
@NotoriousJawz no I'm actually very stupid. I think england should win every game 5-0 and the manager should pick the players I want every game or he's useless. When the players look scared and drop back, I blame it on the manager. When they actually play well and do the attacking things everyone wants, i still moan unless it's 5-0. When my team wins the group, despite players like rice, bellingam and kane playing very badly, I am still angry and upset and blame the manager for not winning by more points. I live a very sad life and I find football hard to understand
Yeah he needs to as he put it "say it as he sees it" they can't put in those 3 performances and expect any praise, but it's not the players fault they're being played out of position it's Southgate and now he's being too stubborn to change it up which is gonna cost us when we meet better opposition, bringing Gordon on in the 89th minute is a joke I'd have told him to go take a flying fuck if he tried to put me on with one fucking minute to go absolute disgrace
@@jamiewm Said it before the Euros, he’s a special talent. A game-changer. Given half a chance this kid will be talked about as one of England’s key players moving forward, just watch.. Once we get shot of Southgate!

This is great, I just watched the kick off & all they do is defend their favorite teams players or say they’re the solution to the team, this discussion actually gives you a better understanding of what is happening
Not surprised. Roy Keane sounded more like one of those traveller call out videos than a football pundit. Let’s all just hope GS is keeping our Anthony fresh for the knockout stage.
Foden was admittedly better than previously and looks tidy at times. Actually played the wing a bit too. Trippier was doing my head in though, only one ball into the box from multiple opportunities. He could have been a key outlet but he just kept playing it back
Saka got the byline twice against Serbia one cross produced a goal for Bellingham and the other Kane hit the bar with a header. Yet we along with other teams at most levels continue to permantely pass the ball sideways and backwards and everything is played in front of defenders nowadays and easy to defend against. I rest my case your honour.
Yeah still amazes me that Greece somehow won the euros playing by passing it around at the back and scoring one goal each game, easily one of the biggest shocks for I’ve seen when they won the whole tournament beating France and Portugal on the way
Bellingham should learn energy conservation from veterans like Zidane and Pirlo by watching their clips during tournaments on how they jog n walk around into excellent positions instead of wasting his energies running into every blade of grass of the football-field.
I honestly felt the same...I can see the team that finished the match playing properly in a proper game. Noticed France haven't scored a proper goal yet? Noticed Germany nearly lost the first proper game they had? The Dutch got battered by Austria? We're not the only team not setting the world alight...
@@bagpussmacfarlan9008 So if Scotland wasn’t a ‘proper game’, does that mean the only ‘proper’ side we have faced is Denmark? France have been scoring set pieces because they have been attacking, allowing them to win them in dangerous positions. Holland didn’t get battered, and they also made wholesale changes to their squad and still almost managed to get the same result as us (a draw, but actually scoring) against a much better side than us. Yes, few teams have set the world alight, but that doesn’t mean we should settle for the kind of abject performances we have been putting in, especially when the first half hour of the first game have proven what we are cable of producing, but even since then, the shackles have been firmly put on
@@JDTStagg88 I'm not settling for anything, just saying it's not as bad as everyone is making out. We couldn't pass a ball against Denmark...the 2nd half against Slovenia looked actually like a football team. I wanted Mainoo in long before the tournament, it could actually be that we work out how to play as we go...you never know. And that's all despite Southgate, I love what he's done but he's not a manager...look at how Austria play, a properly managed team. Imagine if Pep was in charge of the England squad 😳
@SimonFlynn-un1ur imagine thinking the way we've played so far will cut it against one of the bigger teams.. as soon as we play one we'll be conceding more than 1 goal.
Declan rice is the issue here ironically the only midfielder we haven’t tried is probably the answer to Englands problems rice isn’t a good 6 he’s to timid and slow in terms of passing if you knew football you’d know that’s the position that sets the pace and dictates everything everyone says attack is the issue but when the midfield play the ball to the attackers the defenders are already back in position and then there’s only so much they can do, such a little detail but do big but that’s football if they played it quicker more specifically rice as he’s meant to be the dictator I don’t blame rice aswell as a good manager like arteta saw rice can’t play there the answer is Wharton but he most likely won’t get a sniff so enjoy more tired football
Tactical question - when the ball went out wide (to either side - both left and right) there was never any midfielder on the inside to whom they could pass (to spin and go) - therefore the ball ALWAYS went back. How does that get remedied?
I agree with Gary about the format. They have created an unnecessary extra knockout stage by allowing 3rd place teams to qualify which I think is absurd. The best format was when it was top 2 qualify and go straight into the knockouts at Quarter Final stage.
It’s the higher ups as per usual interfering with a format that has been spot on for years just to extract more money out of the game. It’s as simple as that
He doesn't seem to be alone with that view though tbh. I thought it was absolutely turgid and I'd be really worried if I was someone passionate about England but I've seen a fair few saying they saw positive signs at the end. I wonder if that's just because they've called for the likes of Gordon, Mainoo and Palmer to come in and want to pretend it made it made a bigger difference than perhaps it did (no knock on those players, Gordon in particular came on far too late, didn't really think Mainoo did much of anything though).
It suddenly dawned on me when I watched the England game last night that itv's theme tune is a dodgy remix of "The Never Ending Story" which is quite ironic because watching England feels like a never ending story of mediocrity
Gordon only being brought on 89th minute is a disgrace, but in that short space of time he still managed to show us what we’ve been missing on the left. How does Southgate not see this? I love Bellingham but something hasn’t seemed right with him last 2 games
Imagine having Lampard sat there and having to listen to Micah Richards talk about tactics and finding new ways to give Phil Foden the good old sky blue reach-around
Trying to determine if Frank looks pissed off because: A) Another woeful England performance B) Lineker, Shearer and Richards are giving him a headache; or C) regretting not putting a bet on the election date 😂
Mainoo was great- 1st half was the worst of the tournament 2nd half showed signs we could click at some point. Southgates press conference after the games are more worrying than anything else
Somthing to get behind rather than watching side side back back every game. Slovenia sat back they were there for the taking and how many chances did we create. Most of the shots on goal were from 40 yards straight at Oblak
Totally agree. What, the strategy is not to lose!? That's not a strategy. Defense is one half of a strategy to win. The other half? F..cking press and attack. Score. Win.
The great irony of this is that England now have the easiest path to the final, even after being the shitiest team of the tourney. All they probably need is one good game, in the final. I’m not sure they would get an easier path in any tournament, in the future. Heartbreaking watching them.
Do you see England and Germany as football rivals? Why. England never win anything they are always terrible. Where as Germany are only sometimes terrible. Not this time Germany would beat England 10 nil
I honestly think Jude sees himself a number 10 and Southgate is scared of upsetting him. Foden is the best number 10 we got and that's from a united fan
They would do same thing if Foden played as no. 10, it's clueless, rigid, and passive tactic from Gareth despite having so many arsenal or options in England's squad.
@@ajclannachan playing Gordon, Palmer, or even Mainoo don't change or soleve the problem with if Gareth still using his wankerish tactic. I'm sure England will go through Semis at minimum by seeing how quite easy their bracket now.

@@Ryan-ep4py Bellingham looks mentally and physically knackered. Just play Fodden at the 10 and take off Jude. They’re treating him like he’s Ronaldo or Messi. He’s not. He’s had a long season at Madrid and he’s been really poor the past 3 games. Rice and kobbie in the middle.

I think the little tweak of playing saka on the left and foden on the right would help a lot, at least saka would be able to go down the side and get a cross in
Not a single person would have played Trent or Gallagher! Literally every fan and pundit was saying play palmer or Gordon down the left. Put Bellingham next to rice and Foden down the middle as 10. The fact Southgate thought starting Gallagher would make a difference to an awful system he’s set up beggars belief. It’s all so obvious and painful to watch.
He then brings Trent on a right back and he shows his defensive woes straight away. Then puts palmer on the right, and only gives Gordon a few mins… what next.. Pickford upfront?
Agreed. It’s rare that pretty much every fan and every pundit are in agreement-namely that foden on the left wasn’t working but he persists. If he doesn’t believe what his own eyes are seeing he could at least believe the united voice of EVERYONE else
Yeah, why on earth would any person choose to use trent? It's not like he was the creative outlet for a team that amassed 103 from a possible 105 points and broke the record for the most assists from a defender. That would be a fools move in a team with a lack of creativity

They are doing great, the adrenaline will rise as the competition gets tough, considering most are from a very intense season, even palmer is doing great for resting a bit, he's held chelsea massive, those legs are working
I agree with Lineker here. The format allows half (!) of europe to qualify, till 1992 only one out of 4 teams qualified for the Euros, and even the format of since 1996 only allowed one of three teams to qualify. The group stage we have right now is pretty much the real qualification, imo. BUT: Imagine when there wasn't a round of last 16! Only the winners and two (!) runner ups would go through to the quarter finals! Now, THAT would be pressure, and probally very entertaining to watch!
Agreed, well said. In 1988 there were 8 teams - two groups of 4. So you had to be a good side to even be in the tournament. Now there are so many mediocre sides that are in it that it’s dreadful to watch.
8, 16 or 32.. the likes of Austria probably wouldn't get through if there were only 16 which would have been a shame, the issue is the third place teams getting through.
Mainoo reminds me of Kante in the way he plays and covers ground so quickly and breaks up play. He reads the game so well for his age. Was at the semi when they were 3-0 up until they took him off. There’s a reason it went to pens after that.
How high did Gary have to climb to get on that fence? How many points do you get for being higher up the pitch? Youve been waxing lyrical about the dynamic front 6, but they cant seem to play together. Palmer and Gordon have to start the next match.
The fact is, they're trying to build a team around Bellingham. That rarely works in international football. They're setting up the whole midfield so that he can play 10. That's ridiculous.
Turgid was the word I came up with. The Mainoo substitution at half time looked like an acknowledgement that it wasn’t working, but he alone couldn’t make the rest ahead of him move. Southgate waited much too long to make further changes, changes that in the limited time they had actually did something. That match was a lost opportunity to play some of the other players for longer than they got. He could have put on all of the subs at half time and seen what they could achieve. Southgate just seems numb on the sideline, devoid of urgency.
Shearer is bang on. Talking shit so ya mate Harry don’t call you out. England were fucking shit. Again. 2 goals in 3 games. Barely created more than 3 changes ffs.
Come on Gary we shouldn't be seeing 'signs' 3 games into a tournament. It has been this way for 8 years!! Southgate is too scared of losing to ever win
Gary is clutching at straws. If in the knockout game England don't appear at last, then they are out. If Southgate play the team the same conservative way, they're out. If the players show even that they can run with the ball that would be a relief. Teams do pass the ball forward it's just Southgate loves sideways and defences that are in place ready for any England attack, if there is one. Nothing they do make you go wow! Or gets you up on the edge of your seat. Sure they topped the group, look at the group? Imagine if it was Austria, Holland England all in the same group that France had, and Poland? Where would England be now? Gone.
In times like these, it just makes u appreciate how good the likes of Gascoigne and John Barnes were.. talent that could change any game. Let’s hope this team improves
When Zidane played his first international tournament, France won nothing because Cantona kept stubbornly refusing to change his game and kept dropping back like he was at United. They told Cantona to stop that or he was off the team. Cantona didn’t, they kicked him off the team and won a World Cup. What I’m saying is that it Kane won’t stop getting in the way it all the mid field play, dump his ass for someone who will play like Haaland and you might start seeing Foden come alive
Picking the best 11 players won't be successful. You have to have the best players in their correct positions playing the way the manager wants to. England suffered too long with Lampard and Gerrard, how can anyone forget that? Or was Southgate blinkered like the rest of them?
I love these daily uploads and the vibe of these three, but I can't help but think Gaz has been given a slight, subtle nudge in a particular direction from the BBC overlords. All the same, big ups TRIS crew, great to see a new vid pop up.

Agreed, id rather see a team take risks and fail than play sideways for 90 minutes.
Saka got the byline twice against Serbia one cross produced a goal for Bellingham and the other Kane hit the bar with a header.
Yet we along with other teams at most levels continue to permantely pass the ball sideways and backwards and everything is played in front of defenders nowadays and easy to defend against.

So if Scotland wasn’t a ‘proper game’, does that mean the only ‘proper’ side we have faced is Denmark?
France have been scoring set pieces because they have been attacking, allowing them to win them in dangerous positions.
Holland didn’t get battered, and they also made wholesale changes to their squad and still almost managed to get the same result as us (a draw, but actually scoring) against a much better side than us.
Yes, few teams have set the world alight, but that doesn’t mean we should settle for the kind of abject performances we have been putting in, especially when the first half hour of the first game have proven what we are cable of producing, but even since then, the shackles have been firmly put on

I agree with Gary about the format. They have created an unnecessary extra knockout stage by allowing 3rd place teams to qualify which I think is absurd. The best format was when it was top 2 qualify and go straight into the knockouts at Quarter Final stage.

If that's the case, just drop Kane, play Jude as a false 9, put Saka and Palmer on either side of him; just like RM plays
