Awesome convo, although I disagree about the ‘brown paradox’ to an extent. The generations before us didn’t come for the BMW, they came to get away from the destruction, the bombing, and the lack of future. And where could they go where they were safe? The place that isn’t being bombed by the US, the US. And I think when they got here they had a desire to prove the US imagery of brown people wrong, hence the intense pressure to educate the children and have them continue in the most prolific fields. I don’t think anyone blames them for just wanting to live peacefully and give their kids a chance, however, we have to do our duty now that we are able
I think it depends on the person. I know that many who immigrated to the US did so because they were in a good enough position to do so. They were the middle, upper middle, even rich classes in their home countries, and its not completely wrong to say that they immigrated to the US because while they were doing ok in their home countries, they could be doing much better in the US.
To add to that, I think even if you did immigrate to the US for safety reasons, shouldn’t you be happy with just having a job and working a 9-5. Clearly, that’s not the goal. The goal is to be successful in a way, not only to boost our image but also to live freely. In essence, the paradox exists because now you have that BMW (whatever your BMW is) and living such a way means you clearly contribute to this country. How do you then justify the actions the US takes on behalf of your tax dollars? It’s not an individual responsibility but you certainly play a role and that’s the paradox. This is coming from someone who came as a refugee. I get where you’re coming from but the paradox certainly exists.
Fantastic episode, I absolutely loved the way you both edged into and out of tough conversations. It is like a coming together of two different brown worlds in my perspective. I was also at Hasan Minhaj's show in Newark, he called me out for my Manasphere-ing, so much self-reflection in comedy, I love it. Wishing you both more success.
Big huge from Dominican Republic! Not your usual audience I imagine 😅 but really interested in all your work. I discovered your content searching about the tragedy that is still ongoing in Gaza, and now you are one of my geopolitics references.
Mehdi I cannot tell you how much I enjoy "We are not Kidding" show. I genuinely do not have words, from all the chaos in the world, in my professional and just life in general. It's just so good to hear and see this show where people talk about real issues. Have fun but also talk deeply, thank you so much for putting your heart and soul into this show. I genuinely loved this episode, I have never seen Hasan's non-comedy side and I loved this episode.
Consider being a part of India, not Pakistan, because that's the reality of centuries. Maybe it will elevate your spirit further. Pakistan is a fake reality. Both of them associate themselves from India.
Such an amazing show with two of the most brilliant young Brown Muslims. Great back-and-forth and very pleasantly surprised to see Hassan’s gravitas on so many different issues ( I would have put money on Mehdi, but this changed my perspective on Hassan more than Mehdi, who I think is an extremely eloquent, brilliant mind that we have explored in experience a lot more of). Such a wonderful conversation, thank you!

@paulthomas281 I'm not, I'm British and back in Britain. But I do know one or two Canadian citizens who refused to pledge to the queen, one is of greek origin, very greek and vocally anti-queen liz2. Didn't actually stop him.
@@lizcollinson2692 I don't respect that, if someone is a Canadian citizen and does not make the pledge sincerely. If someone does not wish to pledge allegiance to the Monarch, that is fine. The discussion of the paradox of immigrants moving to an America that bombs their home nations was quite interesting. Luckily, I moved to Canada, so I don’t need to contend with this paradox hahahaha
Yet America never bombed Pakistan or India, which the latter is where both Hasan’s are from. But of course, the Desi Inferiority complex mixed with Hasan’s “Emotional Truth” (lies) makes for a great propagandistic combo despite Indian Americans are actually making the most money compared to whites lol Both Hasan’s love to talk about hypocrisy of the other side but yet will not grapple with this one head on. Both, over time, showed how arrogant and disingenuous they really are.
The Ledger of Justice...I like that phrasing. And not being able to solve a paradox is something we all need to be reminded of. We can't even agree on basic principles of society and relations with each other like what causes harm and individualism vs. collectivism.
