I’m a 50 year old country boy from the northern most tip of South Carolina. I’ve never traveled outside of ga, nc, and tn and have a very limited knowledge about the “outside world “ I am in not portraying myself as ignorant or anything but just now very aware of the rest of the world. I am however strangely connected to the ways of foreign countries. I would absolutely love to travel through Pakistan and India, France, Belgium and Germany, all of Europe would suit my interests just fine, and let’s not forget Africa, and Asia lol. If there’s any young people reading this, please listen to me for a second. Don’t limit yourself in life, don’t get so caught up in your own thoughts and beliefs and lose all narrow minded views in your life, and never EVER be afraid to get outside of your comfort zone and learn new things in life, and have fun!

That's a beautiful comment. In this material world, we are constantly seeking fame, money, power, etc. Yet when we achieve what we set out to do, we look for more, leading to unhappiness forgetting that nothing is permanent in this world and we must seek what makes us happy and keep our mind at peace. Since my father passed away last year, I have not been the same. Since COVID, I often ask myself what is important in this life. I still haven't found my answers yet, but keeping my family closer and helping people in any way makes me happy. If can do something meaningful for the people of this country, I will be content.

I would love to believe in reincarnation and everything i really would but I can't persuade myself to believe something due to my fear of dying. I would need some evidence. I think people believe in souls because of our inflated egos and the need to feel that we are unique but we are all the sum of our upbringing and other factors. Just because science can't currently explain consciousness doesn't mean it won't be able to in the future. Just like past discoveries about the world, which were no doubt explained away by religious people before we actually understood them. Watching the DW documentary on Varanasi, often regarded as the oldest city in India, sparked profound reflections within me. Varanasi holds immense spiritual significance, attracting countless people who seek salvation, especially as they near the end of their lives. This tradition of seeking liberation in Varanasi made me ponder the nature of life itself . In our earthly existence, we often chase dreams, desires, and material gains, but this documentary reminded me that these pursuits are ultimately transient. No matter where we come from-whether from a developed, developing, or underdeveloped nation-our struggles and achievements are all bound by time. We all share the same inevitable fate, which transcends social classes, nationalities, and identities. The documentary also led me to consider the idea of predestination. Our time on Earth is limited, and what truly matters isn't the material possessions we accumulate or the societal status we achieve, but the essence of who we are-our soul or spirit. In the end, it’s this essence that continues beyond our earthly lives. Varanasi, with its timeless appeal, serves as a reminder that life's ultimate journey is about moving beyond the physical and into the spiritual realm. 🇮🇳🚩🚩🙏🙏

@Oliver Meyer, this is incredibly humble and brave of you to have even embarked on this project after your own personal loss- perhaps the deepest one!
@Felix Leichum, your camera work makes this so sombre and yet brings out the life-finding-its-way through the challenges in the city. The ventilator outside the room at dawn was the shot almost, Kajal's grit and close emotions behind paint were just as stark!
The editing team has kept the flow so experiential and real, almost everything of significance is right in the centre of this documentary as it should be. And it's no easy job as there are many rituals, several challenges (the pollution, the crowds, the cunning few roaming around, the rucus... just to name a few) that can easily be misrepresented in distorted ways. Perhaps an integral decision to keep the dignity of the experience of families visiting the crematory bank (Manikarnika ghat) and the due care taken to honor it, the tussle of those who are stuck over generations to make a living out of burning pyres, and then the people who stay around the ghats for making a living including the little girl, makes this work so genuine and profound.
Hindus usually see more than their share of unfortunate misrepresentation in mainstream media about their cultural practices. It's because this diverse culture cannot be narrated over a comfortable vacation. It has deep symbolism and meaning. Most will struggle with the idea of burning the dead. The honest embedding requisite before making an attempt to present Hindu traditions is made evident in this stunning piece of art!
As a native of Varanasi, I have to say- Congratulations @DW Documentary and brave of you Oliver!

We are hindu , we pay our respect towards the Sun, the moon , the Rivers, trees ,plants, animals, water, earth, air, stone, mountains, even other planets.
Without them we wouldn't be here alive. We believe the universe is made up of cosmic energy, that energy resides within everything, that energy is your soul, that can neither be created nor destroyed, its ultimate goal is to reunite with the cosmic energy the God, the creator preserver and the destroyer. We all in this universe share the same energy. No one is different. Nothing is permanent, anything which is created will eventually be destroyed, always remember life isn't the truth, the ultimate truth of life is death.
As an ancient culture we believe in this philosophy of life. That's why we respect every soul, that's why we believe God resides in every particle in the form of energy that energy can be experienced and accessed by the vibrations , Hance the rituals you have witnessed in varanasi. I don't know about physical or practical but mentally or spiritually it's a beautiful place to visit.

A lot of misinformation in this documentary -a hallmark of DW. The Ganges has river dolphins living and breathing well. I am not sure where the fish cannot breathe comes from. If river dolphins can breathe, smaller fish can breathe. The story about the woman having to live a miserable life is fake as well. The government has health insurance for poor people that covers surgical costs. If that were not the case, a lot more people would be begging for all sorts of conditions. I discovered religion, whichever you choose, helps with the mental and emotional process. it is a major life event, that certainly is true.

    Kashi is the historical name.
    Varanasi is the current name.
There's a word used and we also call it "Banaras".. "A complete amalgamation of all emotions".
No one goes to Kashi, you can only be there when you are ready.. and this process spans over multiple lives. It's not about luck or fate or faith, there's absolutely no basis of religion in Kashi..
It's my ancestors home. I did last rites of my Grandfather on the river Ganga.. We love each other so much, He was my teacher and I gave his mortal remains the fire.
I was 16.. and I learnt that day how insignificant life or death is. What we do with our life is the only thing left behind.
We didn't bring anything and we don't take anything.
They call us Hindu or Hinduism.. we are complex beyond reason, not even a religion.
We just acknowledge cause and effect.. we call it Sanatan. If there's birth there's death. If there's happyness there's sadness. And sanity exists because of insanity.
And we just leave it there. Now what you believe or whom you pray to in what way is your personal matter. It changes nothing in Sanatan.

Fascinating documentary, I think everyone alive can benefit from thinking more deeply about death, since it is like birth, an inescapable part of being human.

Varanasi is home to events that are more than funerals. Priests are incinerating corpses in lieu of burying them. It is just a riverside igneous cemetery.🔥

Dying is a part of life. It makes me so sad that over here in the West we villainize death. People will blame God for taking away their loved ones. but not thank God for all the good things in life. The US needs revival. We need community and faith in God more than ever.

It's actually the city of mukti/moksha/liberation/niravana, because a lot of enlightened beings used to live here, who could help you get liberation at the final moment. Which was a blessing because generally people would need a guru for that & guru would not help unless you are completely commited.
Death? There is no such thing. It is either liberation or you keep taking different bodies based on your karma. On this planet, only human beings have the possibility to dissolve all karma & transcend the cycle of birth & death. Human birth is rare so naturally it becomes so important. Unfortunately most people don't realise importance of it untill they have been through enough suffering.

@@xskrym you know we call our 'Ganga' a mother, a goddess, we are child of hers but we are the same people who pour down sewage water into the river, we are the same people who throws plastic, garlands into the river, choking the fishes. You see on paper when you read about our religion, we say whole earth is our mother but we litter the s**t out of it, no better waste management system, so I think no matter how good things my religion says about things like spiritualism and living, we the people are just hollow inside for not following the same thing, is my city really the holiest city in the world? I would rather say it's Jerusalem

@@Eusantdac thanks for understanding, I don't know, neither my city Municipal corporation, the people who get money to solve the pollution in ganga, the officials, all are Hindus who can proudly say Ganga is our mother and none of any other religions think like that but we the people don't care when the river has become so much toxic, I don't know please if there's any god there plz help my mother river to be clean because we the people and our corrupt politicians and municipal officials have poured down 1000s of million rupees but still our river is not clean, neither the people who say that the river is their mother will come and throw the plastic and garlands in there, without any second thought.

As the grandchild of a poor grocery store owner and farmer's son from India, he was given the tools and motivation to study hard and come to the U.S. from his own father. I wish nothing more for the children of that worker who wants his children to succeed, my grandfather also studied engineering and I have been writing his story. I hope that man knows his hard work will pay off, and the support he is giving to his children is a gift that will be felt by generations, the same way I am thankful to my own ancestors who allowed my grandfather to become the provider that allowed for my families success.
