I was here in Ushguli last week. There are actually quite a few tourists who pass through all summer. Lots of small restaurants, cafes, and guesthouses around to serve them. And there's a big cell tower that keeps everyone connected to the world year round.
So it's not quite as remote as this doc makes out. Many of the surrounding smaller villages are more remote but not as picturesque for videos like this. In any case, it still feels like a place from the past, still feels quite special.

Saying that the wheel hasn't been invented there is just ignorant. Dragging a sled works much, much better on those hillsides, with more control of the load going downhill and is not much more difficult going uphill. Work sleds are safer for the animals hauling them and for the people as well. Wheels are expensive and require more maintenance and a specialized wheelwright to make them.

Really surprised how close this resembles to remote mountain villages of my region in India.
I come from Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in India. Here we have these remote villages near the India-Tibet border located at altitude of well over 2000m. In winters, there is heavy snowfall. So many families move downhill but some do
    stay in the village.
Agriculture is limited with primary crops being potato, carrot, pulses etc.
Another thing that I found similar is ritual sacrifice. Here too sheeps or goats are sacrificed to goats whenever families movie from downhill to their villages at the start of spring. The meat is shared by all the village.
Collective sharing is kind kf a norm and all the families help each other either to procure food or help wach other in difficult times.
I guess mountain villages share resemblance all across the world.

Such good and beautiful people. Reminds me so much of how Balkan was in the past. There are so many similarities that I feel like I have been to this place and know these people. I hope the materialism and decadence of the modern world never ruins this place. I trust these strong people with their ancient values will be able to pick what is good in the modern world and can make their lives easier, and avoid and reject the rotten things that come with it. I send my best wishes and prayers to our orthodox brothers in Georgia.

Beautiful country. I noticed that the men were proud and powerful, wanting little if any change. It was the woman who hoped for a better life for her children. I imagine she hoped her four daughters could experience freedom from the strict patriarchal system that valued their brother over them. Fortunately there has been some progress as evidenced by the young woman heading off to study law and economics. Hopefully she will return and contribute her knowledge and strength to her community and work to make it a place where her sisters have equal access to opportunity and value.

I took a great course at university by Kevin Tuite about the different ethnic groups in the Caucasus, their traditions and languages. This documentary is quite good in showing most aspects if not all of the life in those harsh regions. No wonder why there are more than 50 languages in that area of the world, people being surrounded by high terrains that they wouldn't dare crossing for no reasons, hence the richness of local cultures. All this like elsewhere is gradually being lost. A least the Svans seem to hold on for another while.

I realize that it’s very hard work to live like this but the simplicity sounds so appealing and I’ll bet you won’t find any of them claiming to be depressed. There’s no time for being depressed bc everything that they have depends upon everyone of them to carry their load. I used to go live in a tent with my husband where we didn’t have any of the modern day amenities such as electricity and running water . We used wood to cook our family and to keep us warm in the winter. Those were some of the best days of my life. We got along beautiful as long as we were in the woods. We complimented each other in regards to how we worked together but we just couldn’t make it work when we left the simplicity of the woods. So a part of me is envious of the life they’re living! I actually think it’s easier than dealing with the myriad issues that come with living in the city!

I can spot from the first minute why they will soon have to leave. Cutting down all trees.. I can see the barron land due to the cutting and the cattle. They got plenty of water to reforest the barren land and live in total abundance! Also the mountain areas are known to be iodome deficent. They all need iodine which can be be made from raw walnuts. Walnut trees can grow very high altitude and also in quite dry places. Other than that.. Idoine from fish and liquid iodine is of course possible to buy

This is from 2011 so I can only imagine how badly barren the forest is now. They clearly were not taking care to plant saplings to regrow the forest. I don't know why they don't bring in cole like other remote villages do and iodized salt

3:42 "It seems that the invention of the wheel still has not reached this area of the caucasus." insinuating that the SVANS are a backward tribe. Well, the narrative is wrong. They are using sleds around those terrains which are more efficient and easy, compared to wheels that get stsuck at every pothole. Wheels cannot work on that kind of terrain.
