What brand gauge set do you use to check and charge auto a/c? Watched your video. Bought a harbor freight set and after only a few uses the seal on the high side hose is leaking and I have to return it. Hand tight, so no it shouldn't be leaking. They don't make things like they used to. Thanks.
All focus ST's, and RS's will idle funny and dip and come back up either randomly or when cold after year or so. I'm on my second car . The intake valves get gummed up so fast you should have them cleaned once a year if you don't have Catch cans installed. Also stock pcv valves spray large amounts of oil after 5000rpm I guarantee if you pull the cold side charge and intake pipe off it will be coated in oil.
In the US they weren't popular only because the idiots who ran dealerships were tacking on a $10k over MSRP "locality fee". I owned a Focus ST and wanted a RS but most dealers wanted like $45k for one. I'm not paying corvette money for a focus even if i like hot hatches. It all came down to dealers not understanding the market for fast fords like the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, or Focus RS. They thought because they were "Sports Cars" they were a mid life crisis mobile for dads who drink Michelob Ultra. In reality this was a car for a 24-32 year old kid who got their first real job out of college.
Now due to their rarity used car dealers are now charging what the msrp on these were. They never learn. This is why I wish we could buy direct from the manufacturer. Dealerships have screwed up the car market more than anything.
I was looking for an RS as well back in 2017 markups pushed me away. I got my ST 5k under msrp with rebates ect. Couldn’t beat the deal so have a st instead.
Except for the thief that stole my old Impreza wagon. Dude blew through those gears like he was racing in a Challenger Hellcat - which still has a manual in 2023 for petes sake.
I bought a 17 RS for around 70k miles for like 32k about 2 years ago, an okay deal for the time. I absolutely love it, smaller rims with wider tires made a pretty big difference in the ride and when I eventually snatched up a used suspension kit it rides pretty good now(given what it is, and still capable of at speed). It's such a blast on windy roads and quite honestly a little too fast sometimes, it can be hard to really push the car without driving recklessly, at least around blind corners. The only issue it's ever given me was a bad fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail which has a fair chance of being caused by bad gas at a local stop. I drive my friends around in it, put the seats down and haul furniture, my dogs, groceries, etc; even put a kayak on top last week with my roof rack. Come this winter it's going to haul me and my snowboard to the mountains multiple times this year. It's a great car, like any other it just needs to be maintained.
The rs its way overengeniered for street use. You can bet the s*&&t. Out of this car with no issues. I had to change the suspension because it was extremely stiff.
I had a 2010 ford focus. Put over 330k miles on before I got rid of it. Nothing major mechanical problems. Rocker panels rusted out. Lots of tires and suspension work.
Had a 14' 5mt sedan sold at 250k Mile's. I beat the snot out of it, used it as pub transportation fir the state, did a paper route for 2.5 years qoth it, in a mountains area woth awful roads, in winter+ just driving casually on our 3rd world country roads. I didn't need to but chose to get new transmission because 3rd gear was being a absolute bear, electric pwr steering broke at about 230k $750 repair. New alt at 220k, other than that it was a fantastic car. Engine was basically as smooth at 250k as 100 miles.
As a 2016 Focus RS owner, I love to see that this car continues to get some love and respect even after 7 years since launching! Sure would love a Puma RS in the states....Even if it's an EV!
I was looking for a cheap car to run errands in and sometimes pick up kids. Found a 2012 Fiesta SE a few months ago. It has the manual transmission. And it only had 54,000 miles on it. Seller told me he could've sold it 10 times over had it been an automatic. No one wanted it because it was a manual. Win for me!
I currently drive a 16 RS with 77k miles. These cars are notorious for faulty BCMs (I believe all focuses of this era had the same issue) so it’s not a surprise that there’s been several codes that consist of “lost communication with BCM.” I guarantee it’s not an issue with either door but the BCM acting up and losing communication with a random module. My focus ST’s BCM used to lose communication with my headlights all the time and it would cause the bulbs to not turn with the car which is a feature of these headlights. But a quick restart would fix it and they would turn again and the warning light would go away. You also mentioned the owner said the car would stall out at idle every once in awhile, these are know to have faulty a vapor purge valve/solenoid so I would guess that’s probably the issue, it might not throw a code now but that’s the most common symptom with that issue. Otherwise these cars are built very well and can last a long time so as long as the oil and other fluids are changed when they are recommended to be. Gotta get those valves cleaned every once in awhile too.
I never understood the purpose of a BCM when the ABS computer does all the work. No reasons to need a computer to control what a few relays and fuses can control especially in a pure sports car.
Another reason for the AC not working well is that the radiator cooling fan might not be running. My 2013 Escape has the same electrical system. During the winter I did not realize my radiator cooling fan was not running, until June when the weather got hot. The 50 Amp. Mega Fuse #8, which sends power to the Radiator cooling fan, had burned out and it did not trigger a check engine light. There are 9 Mega fuses in a hidden fuse panel in front of the battery. Mega fuse # 9 powers the Body Control Module. These 50 Amp mega fuses are "Slow Blow" fuses that can get weak, letting through reduced amps causing trouble with the fan and Body Control Module items.
I never got tired of driving my "99 Integra which I bought new and sold in 2016. That model wasn't fast but it handled so well and looked good since I was the only owner. I still miss it. Little hatch backs are fun to drive when made properly.
Collectible? Not for my money. They made way too many and they are way too recent. I guess if you look at how soon a Ford will be in the junkyard these days is the only way that car will ever be rare enough to be a collectible.
I have a 2014 Ford Focus ST, bought new in December of 2014. 8 years later and 186000 miles I still love driving this car. No issues at all. Burns maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart oil every 5000 miles(oil change,). Original clutch and turbo. I rarely jump on it except for the occasional on ramp acceleration up to freeway speed. First Ford product I have ever owned. Once engine gives me issues I will put in a stroked 2.3 liter or have the one I have rebuilt to a 2.3. Great car so far for me
I keep thinking the "unreliability" problem is greatly exaggerated. And trust me, many, if not most of the problems, are caused by bad mechanics breaking parts.
Holy cow! I've owned my '14 ST for 8 years only gotten it up to 90k miles. My only issues were poor roads that kept busting up my suspension (4 repairs in it's lifetime), replaced the hood latch cause it was a pain to open sometimes and the coolant reservoir because it cracked. Thinking about replacing my clutch since it slips if give it the beans above 6kRPM, aside from that... it's fine (ABS fully off). Other than that, to my surprise, everything works. If I have any complaint it's Ford's use of the term "torque vectoring" when honestly it's "torque braking". 😅
My 2014 ST has never thrown a code or needed any kind of repair in 150,000 miles. I just change the oil, tires, and brakes as needed. The Recaro seats are the best. I thought about trading up to an RS, but they were hard to find and a LOT more $$ than I paid for the 2 year old ST.
@@VAspeed3 I do like the front end of the RS. A British company makes a front end conversion piece for the pre-'15 ST. Have thought about doing iti but I'm sohesitant. I have had to change the purge valve 3 times so far. Misfire at idle is the sign that the sparkplugs have fouled out. Change that and engine rpm is normal again
Bought mine new in 2017. Love this car. It puts a smile on my face everyday I drive it. Ive not had any major issues. Had it pressure tested with no faults, but the dealer went ahead and replaced the head gasket. Minor issues with door weatherstripping and had the intake valves cleaned once. I did get 1” smaller rims with larger sidewall tires to help the daily driving. All in all, a solid car.
2017 RS owner here. Thing is a gem. Previous owner was incompetent and dealership local to me doesn’t quite seem to understand it but boy it doesn’t even matter, it’s so much damn fun.
I do doordash in ubereats and I drive a 2009 Ford focus and I spent 100,000 mi on it in two years. And nothing really bad has happened besides my power steering going out which was easy my radiator cracked which was easy because one of the radiator hoses blew off. But other than that it's been very solid for me and it's just now at the 200,000 mark but definitely needs new motor mounts
@@XTRABIG I make $1,400 a week doing it and if I'm not working too much only makes a like $1,000 a week but have been doing it for over two years full time and got the car for free from my grandma so it definitely paid for itself plus some. But I'll be getting my CDL here soon and after a few years at a company will get my own truck
I have a 2012 with a 5 speed manual. Bought it new, serviced the A/C 2 years ago, a couple of weeks ago had to change the fan controller. It'll run you out and that's here in Texas and 106 degrees!
Their popularity in Europe didn't quite equate to here in the states. There were also issues with head gaskets and the motor was tuned for near full capacity with little left on the table.
Scotty the RS is still over 30k in the states even with high mileage! If you want cheap fast fun but sacrifice the drift modes and awd then get the focus ST instead, there both pretty similar
Agreed! And comparing apples to apples the RS would walk all over the type R and is still equal in value. Honda and Subaru are lucky they stopped making the RS cause those wouldn’t be so popular. And isn’t all the components on the Type R motor plastic too???
I have to disagree with this statement. As much as I love my RS the Type R is better in every way other than straight line performance. On track/curvy roads the Type R is faster.
IDC what anyone says, those Focus ST's and Focus RS's scream, when they're built and tuned right, they're quite fast. Will take down WRX and STi's without a problem. Had a 2018 Focus ST myself, a lot of fun and will move out of it's own way.
As always a great video Scotty! Living in the UK and seeing tons of these Ford Focus' around it's interesting to see what you think of these. Keep up the great work 😃
I've changed the purge valve 3 times. Anytime the car starts to have misfire at idle or the idle rpm is jumping around and the engine feels like it is about to die, change the purge valve. It will solve the problem.
Scotty the engine cover on that vehicle, (also the ST), is essentially the upper shroud of what is a giant cooling system. That is why they get so dang yucky underneath on the insulation, there's air passing around that quite often.
Focus RS owner here. Put it in drift mode for 80 percent power in the back end and you can do burn outs lol. Also launch control built in. You can burn out 🤣
Had an opportunity to buy a Focus RS new back in 2017, and it was definitely a fun car. This car was clearly aimed at a niche demographic, and I wasn't it. If I was half my age, I would have thought a lot more seriously about it. I passed - for the same money, I bought a Mustang GT/CS convertible instead. You can't compare the two as they are completely different cars with completely different road manners. I wanted more of a cruiser than a race car, and something that had more comfy seats. Too bad the Focus RS wasn't around during the hot-hatch era in the 1980s - would have made my VW Rabbit look like a horse & buggy.
If you don't need the rear seat, the Mustang is a formidable vehicle. But I'm a middle-aged dad and I need the family convenience for now. We sold the Mustang GT convertible to buy the RS - kind of an opposite story to yours 😂
@@afterburn2600 My kids are all above the age of 20, and don't live at home. We already had a couple of people-movers in the household (6 cars currently between the better half & I). We were looking for a fun car that was a comfortable cruiser. The Mustang fit the bill perfectly. I added a Bullitt to the fleet in 2019 - minus the Recaro seats. 20-30 years ago, the Focus RS would have been perfect - it's great for someone who's single, or a small young family. A people mover that also delivers on performance.
@@GrummanBearcat North America wouldn't see the Escort until the third generation in the UK, and no performance-oriented options until about 1983. There was apparently an Escort SS in 1981 that was the performance version, but production numbers were very low and I've never laid eyes on one in my life. It basically featured suspension & brake upgrades, but the drivetrain was unchanged from the regular Escort. A turbo option was finally offered for 1984 for the Escort Turbo GT, and appears to have been dropped after 1985. Later Escort GTs would have the larger 1.9L engine that was naturally aspirated, and produced less power than the turbo-charged 1.6L version. Sadly, we would never see the Cosworth option on this continent. Important note about the Escort - our version is a "distant relative" of yours, which tells me there are few similarities.
Your " beauty cover" is a dust cover. It keeps dirt and grime off of the top of the vale cover and intake manifold also ensures cables and springs stay free from debris.
@@benmarley3086 Average mileage for vehicles accumulated yearly is considered to be 15,000 miles per year. 52,000 miles is low mileage for a seven year old rig.
Nothing to be scared about - I've owned mine since new in 2016. Great car, will be tough act to follow . Lovely ride quality at speed. Wonderfully responsive and in the words of UK Car Magazine "On wet roads the RS can show the supercars a thing or two"
@timetravel11I’ve got one it’s a 2014 and zero problems with it . The air blows ice cold too . I’ve own dozens of Fords in my lifetime and have never had any a/c problems with any of them, despite what Scotty says . Too each their own Toyotas aren’t for me do not like their looks nor their prices.
In the Netherlands we learn driving stick shift because cars with an automatic transmission are more expensive. You can get a drivers license in automatic transmission car (code 78 on Dutch drivers licenses) and you will be allowed to drive a stick shift transmission vehicle after an extra 10 hours of lessons with manual transmission . It used to be that automatic transmission was for 'special' people. Although, times are changing with EV's
here in the uk MOST of us know how to drive manual gearboxes because most of our cars are manual, not many people even want a automatic because they arent as much fun and a manual is better for our roads if you want to go fast in the narrow twistys which is just about every road lol. I'd love that car ( apart from the eco boost engine which I hate haha )
I worked in the UK for 5 years. It surprised me how many Brits don’t even have driving license or cars. One guy I worked with was 27 and had just passed the driving license exam.
@@wasidanatsali6374 Yeah, I only passed 4 years ago and I'm 28 years old. Lessons over here are fairly expensive as you need at least 40hours recommended for most people before you sit your driving test exam (which is two parts, a computer based hazard perception test and road sign test) and a practical test on the road for about 40mins with an eyesight test that can fail you instantly if you cannot read a number plate out (you get three attempts). So many folks choose not to do it, especially people who live closer in the cities where they don't really need a car, I am a little further out so it comes in handy to have one to go and see family and help parents out.
@@wasidanatsali6374 I think part of the reason for that is the public transport like buses and trains are really frequent and usually quite cheap so its easy to live without a car. In the US you are pretty much detached from lots of basic things without a car unless you live in a dense city or town.
My mother taught me how to drive in a 4 speed stick VW diesel rabbit. Still one of the funnest cars I ever drove. She said if you learn how to drive this you can drive anything.
i bought one brand new loved it it was way more fun in the city than my 19 mustang roush stage 3 miss that car loved it so much i was able to fit a palet in the back also in the snow im in buffalo i went through feet of snow with winter tires
I used to have several Ford RS200's back in the UK. I saw that they came out with a Focus and brought back the coveted RS badge. I was looking at these and even now they're 35k upwards. That's too rich for me despite how much I'd love to have one. As far as comparing it the the Civic Type R, the RS would smoke it all day long. No FWD car is going to compete with AWD. As soon as you go into a corner you're going to get torque steer. Sue you can left foot brake but AWD will come out of the corner faster. If you're lucky enough to have an RS, take care of it and enjoy.
0:36 Today I drove from Maine back to Long Island, NY in my my 2004 F-150 (5.4L 3V). Ice cold A/C on a 92*F day. 152K on the ODO, all original except for wear parts.
The F series Ford trucks are purposely built to be reliable just like Japanese vehicles. The trade off has always been lower mpg, engine noise, higher auto insurance. Many F series trucks get up to 500,000 miles on the engine & transmission. Ford even rebuilds used F series transmissions if they fail even after the warranty expires, it's not free, but good customer service for their most loyal customers.
I replaced the entire intake system for one made by Mountune, all cast aluminium intake pipe and manifold, together with a Airtec FMC with upgraded aluminium 2.5 inch charge pipes as supposed to the rubber factory hose, a front mount carbon air scoop is on its way from COBB My car is a Stealth grey ST wagon but you can't get that one in America ...oh and i removed the beauty cover cause it hides the intake manifold and makes contact with the intake pipe since it was meant as an upgrade part for the RS but i made it work on the ST anyways
Just buy it and live with it. Unless you want it to last for 20+ years without EVER replacing that part. I have an 8 year old beetle that also has many plastic parts. So far, nothing has been broken besides the ignition coil connectors which is $15.00 a set, and the plastic water pump which was upgraded to a metal one. Sure, they break, but just replace 'em and they'll last for another while, and continue having fun driving! To me, it's totally worth it to have a fun car to make one's boring mondays a little more fun.
I daily drive a 2001 Ford Mondeo with 270.000km. The 2.0 Mazda engine in it has an all plastic intake manifold. I removed the swirl flaps preventively, but otherwise it's still completely fine after 22 years. But it is naturally aspirated of course. So no high pressure.
@@CheapBastard1988 Lol; I actually drive a 2002 Focus ZX5. 2L, 5-speed. Ain't giving her up. The RS was the natural upgrade, but I like not having a car note!
For this Focus, plastic parts are not that extreme. Wait until you see a new BMW . Intake manifold and valve cover have been made with plastic for every manufacturer since early 2000's I believe. I have never seen a new car that comes with a metal intake manifold and valve cover from factory anymore these days.
This was my dream car ever since MKII came out. But in the end i got tuned Fiesta ST because it was half the price and i couldn´t afford a Focus RS. Very fun as well though.
meh I smoked one of these in the city in eco mode in my bmw i3s when I realized the focus driver was trying to race me didn't even have to increase motor power to smoke him either I was rather surprised to be honest🤣🤣🤣
@@raven4k998Straight ahead top speed is usually not the Focus RS's strong point as it is a rally car. Chase one on a mountain run and see how it goes.
Owned a 2016 RS. Was so much fun to drive and with a couple bolt ons. That thing ripped! Started a family and had to sell it. Just now got a super deal for a 2014 Focus ST
RS is an amazing car unless you've drove one you wouldn't under stand there such a fun car to drive hard with full bolt on and tunes you can push 450hp easily, the major down fall is the head gasket leaks witch cuz engine failure, someone told me they had an RS and they had there engine replaced 3 times in 1 year
R.I. bumpy roads? LOL, That I do not miss, I left RI 25 years ago. I live in Las Vegas NV now and have to deal with constant road construction every where I drive. This city is growing so fast they need to improve/widen roads every year lol... Love your videos!
About the engine cover holding heat in. Wouldn’t that make it less stressful on the plastics and gaskets because they cool down slower? Just like a metal if you bend it too much or too fast it’ll break. I feel like the same would apply here. I mean BMW literally made this their whole thing to keep everything together better on the b58. And it’s proving to be a very reliable engine.
Scotty I have a 2012 SE Focus hatchback 2.0 engine 5 speed manual transmission and it's going for soon 300,000 miles, same clutch, CV jonits, and plugs lasted to 215,000 miles still runs fantastic gets 35 to 38 mpg use no oil I love love this car ! Ford did not want them to last this long !
I have a '13 Focus ST and it's a great little car. I've had it since it was new and maintained it myself. And I also recently had to do the refrigerant and that's the only issue i've had..
i think the RS Focus didn't sell well in the states because most muscle cars drivers didn't how good it was. until they got hosed by one at the lights. or tried to follow it around a corner.
We need more cars that combine turbochargers, manual transmissions, and all wheel drive. My only issue with the Focus RS is that I wish it was a 2/3-door. I’d prefer genuine sports cars like that to not be larger and heavier than they need to be.
Come to the UK. We love small engine turbocharged manual hatchbacks haha. I love my ford fiesta, nippy, handels well and its being a hatchback it has decent practicallity
If you can get a 2018 that’s the best one to buy. Never had the head gasket recall and they fixed a few other issues. Carbon fiber bits on the inside. Black mirrors and roof. Ahhh I still miss mine. 😢 Race Red. It was a beaut. lol
I have a Ford 500 I bought nrw in2006. I love it. The only issue is the AC socks. MY mechanic in New England is thing me to let it go due to rust underneath. I love this car and hate to let it go. What would you recommend to replace it? I want an AWD sedan NO EV!
I have a Ford Focus SE Dual automatic transmission. Had to have clutch replaced twice now Clutch position sensor set my check engine light off. If only I was a mechanic.
I probably owned 30 vehicles in my life and half of them were manual transmissions I live in a rural area so it's not a nuisance to Shift I learned how To drive 63 Dodge Dart station wagon 3 on the tree slant 6😊Back in the day you learned how to drive a stick before you got an automatic. Father's rules😊
i must be british because i just bought a 2015 3.5 gen ford focus se with the 5 speed manual with 91k miles. Very hard to find a manual non st or rs and I've loved it so far. It rides miles nicer than my 2000 5 speed mazda protege I had and better than my 03 ford focus zx3 5 speed I had. Im only 21 and i plan to have a manual forever even after teaching myself because its so much fun and its timeless to me just like cars are.
Scott the garage said no time for oil change Found time did not inform put 5w40 instead of 5w50. 2.5 hours later I took to ford. Kept the oil and filter as o did smell metal and oil combo. How bad was this on car!!!
DID you guys see the German come out in OL Scotty when he flung the RS through the gears with authority and a smile. The Teutonic Knights of yore could have used such a fast steed.
Hey Scotty, on a different subject. But still on the subject of Ford. Have you heard that Ford is recalling 870 THOUSAND Ford F - series truck's the because of the electric parking break's can activate on their own without the driver doing any kind of a input for them to set?
Learned to drive stick off an RS, amazing lil car and it's a real shame Ford killed it off domestically. Still out there abroad supposedly, at least the ST variant and I think it now offers a 7-speed DCT (likely straight outta the Ecoboost Mustang). Ford should just do what Hyundai's doing and lift the Ecoboost powertrain and just jam it into a new Focus chassis, Escape, and Maverick; no one would be upset at a RWD hatchback / cross-over / city-truck; offer them as manual + DCT and call it a day.
Focus RS's are nice cars, but I'm right now they're not much cheaper than Civics. On kbb an average 2017 Civic Type R goes for 27-31k while a 2017 RS goes for 25-27k. I've noticed that in my area all the RS's are listed higher than the kbb average, at 30-40k indicating that they might go up in price. To begin with, the Focus RS only sold 9,500 in America over the three years it was produced. While the Type R is still in production, estimated 13,000 sold in America between 2017 and 2019, throughout all the years around 30k to 40k Type Rs sold worldwide.
I have trouble understanding Scotty because he changes his punctuation back and forth from the right arm to the left arm, and his bi-polar hand flourishes seem to be non-SAE. But he has fun.

Lucky only $10k I’ve seen some $30k over.
And then when they discontinued them they were $15k of MSRP.
Now due to their rarity used car dealers are now charging what the msrp on these were. They never learn. This is why I wish we could buy direct from the manufacturer. Dealerships have screwed up the car market more than anything.

Nice!
GREAT INFORMATION
The darn gem modules I think they were called had issues to my tail light were stuck on all the time could never get anyone to figure out the issues
I never understood the purpose of a BCM when the ABS computer does all the work. No reasons to need a computer to control what a few relays and fuses can control especially in a pure sports car.
FORD'S ARE TOTAL GARBAGE!!!!!!!

@@fortimusprimeOr using oil without the correct additives.

Bought mine new in 2017. Love this car. It puts a smile on my face everyday I drive it. Ive not had any major issues.

I added a Bullitt to the fleet in 2019 - minus the Recaro seats. 20-30 years ago, the Focus RS would have been perfect - it's great for someone who's single, or a small young family. A people mover that also delivers on performance.
So in the UK, in the 80s, you would have had the Escort RS Turbo and Sierra RS Cosworth, in the 90s the Escort RS Cosworth.

I love the edits when Scotty laughs its so freaking wholesome :D
It's EVs that scare the crap out of me😂
Are you scared of a little electrical fire ?
Ya ...... I don't blame you at all. So many kilowatts just itching for a short somewhere in the battery.
And they should.
Why? Why do they scare you?
@@mattyice31if you don't know by now...do some research!
I have a Ford Focus SE
Dual automatic transmission.
Had to have clutch replaced twice now
Clutch position sensor set my check engine light off.
This was a very popular car in US. Was not popular is the ridiculous mark up the dealers asked that kill the sales of this fun car.
i must be british because i just bought a 2015 3.5 gen ford focus se with the 5 speed manual with 91k miles.
Scott the garage said no time for oil change
Found time did not inform put 5w40 instead of 5w50.
Im in RI and just put an order in for a 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance. Supposed to be able to reach 500k mileage! Come check it out next season.
The RS was always destined to be a limited edition car.
Mazdaspeed3 owner here and I'll be getting one of these cars soon just for the looks.
I love my Rs I wouldn't trade it for the world!! Great video Scotty!!
I just bought a 17 today haha got a steal on it 26k out the door with 65k miles im in love
I love your videos. ❤
I have trouble understanding Scotty because he changes his punctuation back and forth from the right arm to the left arm, and his bi-polar hand flourishes seem to be non-SAE. But he has fun.
