I am a retired police officer and I was in charge of the police vehicles! Scotty is right our explorers like this would need water pumps usually just after warranty expires after 60k miles but they would have a lot of hours from idling, I figured it out by hours on the engine , the amount of hours on the engine compared to a civilian car at 60k miles was the equivalent of driving a civilian car about 250,000. Miles! And it cost about $2,800. to have dealer do water pump and timing chain! We had a deal with the town not to replace cars before 150k but these explorers were junk by 120k! But if not letting them idle and putting lots of hours they should last awhile! These modelsvalso had recalls for carbon monoxide getting in the cab! We had several people get sick, and put CO detectors in them!
Years ago I bought a Crown Vic police car. So comfortable and a smooth ride. Whenever I drove in the left passing lane every car in front pulled into the right lane and I just sailed on by.
I plan on getting a Crown Vic Police Interceptor one day. The last year was 2011 and most went to the Kansas State Patrol. What I look for is rust and frame damage mostly, everything else can be fixed/replaced by me at a leisurely pace as I haven't rushed anything for many many years. More enjoyable this way. Don't care about electronic issues either as I can rip all that out and go back to basics. If it doesn't have a push bar, cage and at least one spotlight I move on. Sounds picky but that is what I want.
I actually got a free ride myself. Was in an accident and the police officer gave me and my wife a ride to the Chinese restaurant (about a mile) so we could have lunch while I waited for my dad to pick us up and take us to Enterprise.
Full sized sedans started getting smaller and cops had to start carrying more equipment. The switch to SUVs was necessary. Our department switched from Impalas to Explorers. I hated getting stuck with an Impala. I'm 6' 2" 240 lbs. Driving those Impalas was insanely cramped and uncomfortable. It was difficult to get in and out if you were taller than 5'' 6" or so. With all that crap on your belt as well as wearing a vest, it was causing serious back problems. Also, we're not allowed to PIT cars. They don't even teach us in the Academy. Few departments these days are allowed to. Heck, there was an episode of (I think it was) Live PD in which the Tulsa police were in a vehicle pursuit that went onto the interstate. They are actually heard on camera talking on the radio about how the State Police are now part of the pursuit and they are actually allowed to PIT the car. There are few (if any) urban municipal departments that are still allowed to PIT a car. If you do it you are likely going to get fired. Best case scenario, you get a multi day suspension without pay.
@JROQUEfounderofcoolhandvets then go ahead and ignore me. While you're at it, buy a used police vehicle and then act all surprised when the drive shaft snaps in half when you get into a very minor fender bender (yes, I have actually seen that happen).
06 crown vic still goin strong 169k..had it about 8 years , paid $3300 then and have another 5k into over the years including a $2700 rebuild trans. Other than leaky valve covers and 3 out of 4 window not working its a solid car lol
I remember my brother bought a Plymouth Fury 440CU used police car, within a year he had to replace the rear end twice as it was just ruined by the force of the engine and the abuse by the police!
@@TheSilvertrigger CVs suck in the snow. In my 26 years I preferred the SUVs to anything I’d driven. ABS. Traction control. Much more comfortable and ergonomic. Much roomier and easier to get in/out etc. Better visibility. The lack of a secure trunk was something to consider though. We had several where the rear window was shattered and gear was stolen.
Don't forget the power take-off unit drain and refill. Very critical maintenance on all-wheel-drive Fords. It sits right next to the catalytic converter and bakes the fluid.
Friend had one, he said after awhile it gets old when everyone slows down in front of you, he had a decal that said "Not A Cop" for across the top of his windshield.
They just buy the cop versions and put their insignia and colors on them. Probably cheaper than special ordering one. I'm fire, and our chiefs vehicles don't have the front cage, but do have the rear cage.

It's a gamble, and not a good one at that. Scotty touched on it, but I can't tell you how badly emergency vehicles are beat on. By the time they reach auction, they don't have much left in them. Fully expect one to fall apart right before your eyes. I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole.

Why would anyone pay for a police car when you could ride around in 1 for free? I've taken lots of rides and never paid a dime. Morons.
