I just got that Jeep and I wish that button would default to stay ON! I knew that right away and thought oh dear how much is this button gonna cost to fix when it breaks! I had no idea about the battery! Wow! I bet you have to reboot the computer when you change those batteries too! I just had to remove the whole air filter system to change the drivers side headlight bulb!
On the Renegade, I turned it off by holding down that button a few seconds (I think a message appears on the panel). This turned it off permanently. Maybe you could try it on your model!?
On my 88 toyota pickup I have 3 chipped teeth on my flywheel and the starter just spins when it's in that area and I'm not changing it yet, I just put it into 4Lo 3rd gear push it and dump the clutch and it spins the flywheel to a good spot and starts right up...bring back the manual transmissions😂
I'm not much of a thinker, but if my battery was dead I'd jump start it for my trip to the parts store - problem solved. If I called AAA, they'd jump start it and move the seat back to replace the battery - problem solved.
My hybrid Maverick shuts itself off at a stop or goes electric under 30 mph....the GF has a subaru that shuts off at the stop light. Then it rumbles back to life. Gotta ask her if she has an off switch on that. THANKS SCOTTY!
When I remote start my 23 Maverick it usually runs the heat (im in South Dakota, its cold) off the battery unless it goes too long or its super cold....
Corrosion EQUALS "enemy", you are very correct there. Perhaps if more casual car drivers learned basic aviation and pre-flight discipline? Nah! Will never hapoen...
Scotty what about diesel engines? I used to drive a Mercedes sprinter van that was diesel at work. Mercedes wants you to wait a few seconds before you start the van Why? So, the glow plus can heat up. If you do not it will still start. Have you ever heard of this before? Are all diesel engines like this, or only Mercedes? Thoughts?
Most cars and trucks use glow plugs now. I used to have to spray a shot of ether into my diesel forklifts intake, when temp was below freezing. Cold biotch Arctic Cat.
I used to drive old Peugeot 309 diesel. Lovely simple bulletproof engine. Sometimes in very cold winters I’d need to run the start sequence of glow plug heating 2-3 times before cranking the engine otherwise they just weren’t hot enough for the fuel to ignite. Added 10 - 15 seconds to the start sequence. Now driving a Skoda Superb diesel. This starts instantly like a regular petrol / gas car - no glow plug indicator light on the dash. I think as soon as the car is unlocked it heats the glow plugs so there’s zero delay in cranking over the engine.
I bought a Mazda with the start stop i told the sales lady i didn't want that so she shut it off as far as revenging up the engine in cold weather all of mine i have owned seems to start at a higher RPM than warmer weather but after a few minutes i push the accelerator and it goes back to normal didn't realize it but my battery is under the passenger seat but i don't have power seats and my concern is what if the battery i hope not explodes 😮and car manufacturers make cars crappy is to make more money by repairs or hope you buy another one 😡
@2:31. LOL, when I was in Grade School, there was a renter in the apartment complex where I lived...EVERY morning this person would start the car and REV the engjne, over and over...woke me up as a ten-year old, and I knew then they were destroying the engine. This in LA....not that cold!!!!
First time I encountered a start/stop vehicle at a light, I thought the poor guy was turning off his truck to save gas till he made it to a gas station. Several weeks later when I discovered what really took place, like Scotty, my common sense spoke up and said, start/stop just cannot be a good thing for the starter, etc. My car: 95 Taurus wgn, not great mileage (16) but not bad for many reasons. Thanks Scotty!
Hey Scotty, how about a stop/start car that the starter starts the engine at every stop light and sign. To me as a retired mechanic, I would have thought that it wears the starter out in less than a year, but our '17 (Chinese assembled) Buick Envision we bought new, and BTW, no way to bypass this system as this is the first year of it, but it still has the original starter that still is going strong. Did they do something different to this starter to make it be able to do that without damaging it much? I help make it last longer by my easy driving, like seeing a red light ahead I start slowing down to where I'm inching up to the intersection and the light turns green, and at stop signs I cheat by doing the 'rolling stop' that cops will ticket you for, but cops in this little town aren't around a lot. So the starter is made different (you just got there in your clip as I was typing) and this eases my mind a lot, as we have 105K on this car, on the second set of tires and second $250, 5 year gel filled battery. Regular recommended oil changes and at the 100K level, a whopping 6 hundred bucks for all the fluid changes in it and whatever else that they do to it at the dealer, but dang if the car still drives like when we drove it home from the dealer, not one problem so far, nothing has broke yet, and in fact, the front brake pads still have over 50% of pad left on them. But hey, like I said, I'm easy driver, and my age has a lot to do with that at 79 years old and still kicking, but not as high as before....
Start/Stop was more for emissions. A lot of cars idling a t a stoplight. Sounds like a good idea, but very minor improvement. MPG? minor. It is not worth it but we are stuck with it for now. Note that some vehicles wont start/stop in trailer mode. Probably a good idea...lol
I'm about to buy a start/stop bypass switch off eBay, at this point I don't care if it voids my warranty. I almost gotten into 3 accidents with the long hesitation from that system
I wish it was this easy as pulling a fuse to fully deactivate the start stop system, but it’s dumb because when you come to a stop and it happens and you have to make that noise as if you’re stalled out and having to start your car, it just seems embarrassing
Starters. You think a car engine starter is complicated? Try a typical airliner jet engine starter. Except the for the B787 (electric) most airliners' engines are started by compressed air. This can be from an external source, "ground start", or the APU, basically a small self-contained turbine engine. High pressure bleed air is routed to the starter via a Valve, which engages the High Pressure Turbine portion of the engine (N2). A light in the cockpit indicates when this valve is open. The engine start is monitored by pilots on the N2 gauge, and at a certain RPM the fuel is introduced via the Fuel Lever/Cutoff. EGT is visually monitored to ensure a "hot start" doesn't occur, and at a certain RPM (N2) the Start Valve must be closed to prevent back-pressure to the Starter. It is a required Crew Call-Out, "Start Valve Closed" during this sequence. (The light goes out) Should the Start Valve fail to close, the engine must not accelerate and the Start aborted via the Fuel Ievers/Cutoff position. And Maintenance action required. Simple, really. Now, Start Your Engine!!!! 😊
How about the famous Blackbird, I saw a clip where it showed that they use two Chrysler Hemi's to start them, and that it was getting harder to find good Hemi's before they retired them. How about them apples, whoda thunk?
I wish theyd put the auto engine off with a lever or a switch or maybe in the infotainment system so you could tell it to stay off permanently as a setting..
Yeah, well I remember on granddad's old Chevy pickup where pushing on that big steel button next to the gas pedal to make it start, are you this old too?
Wrong. There are many parts inside the engine that experience more wear and tear even on every hot startups. The Start/Stop system even puts more wear and tear on engine mounts.
We need a bluray collection of these teachings for the car owners before the internet lords decide they don't want to host beneficial knowledge anymore.
Speaking of relays? Again, not modern airliners but more General Aviation airplanes. There's a reason for a "Radio Master Switch". If you care about your expensive Avionics, isolate them. Start that ICE air-cooled airplane engine, let it stabilize and THEN turn on your Avionics suite. Sorry, you were talking "cars"......
While one of the most impressive vehicles ever made, the Lexus RX350 has the following problem (according to ai) "A common issue with the AWD system in a 2009 Lexus RX350 is a potential for significant oil leaks due to a known defect with the oil cooler hoses, which can deteriorate over time and cause major engine damage if not addressed promptly; this is a known issue that many owners have reported and should be checked when considering a used 2009 RX350." How do I discern if this problem has occurred with a used RX350? How do I tell?
I'm not a car expert, but the VERY FIRST TIME I heard a stop-start car at a traffic light... I said to myself there's no way that saves fuel, but I hope they make the starter super resilient because that's a ton of wear and tear...
I’ve Done the Starting thing a Couple times, when the car was already Running. Couldn’t hear the motor running. Only twice in 20 years though, and the car is still running perfectly, with Normal Maintenance 👍. 02 Crown Victoria 😊 Just found that I Definitely have to Clean one of the Battery terminals. Thanks for the Tip
That A-off feature has to be one of the most annoying things I deal with when I drive my family members' cars. My daily driver doesn't have it (thank god), but I don't think I know ANYBODY who actually likes that feature.
So if you have to replace 2 batteries instead of one then there is more eco waste to get rid of so how is it better for the environment to have a start stop system
Why haven't they added a feature to keep you from starting the engine when it is running? They already keep you from switching to reverse when driving normally at speed, pulling the key out or starting the car in gear, etc.
I absolutely hate cars that turn off at a stoplight and I had to spend a lot to have daytime running lights unhooked . If I pull up at night and turn my headlights off, I don’t want anyone to look out and see lights on. Lame!
Scotty, what about hybrid engines? Many times if your running on electric motor the gasoline engine is off and has to start up? This happens a lot where the gasoline engine has to kick on and off as you go? Are they designed in a different way or is it in some ways similar to the start stop feature which you can’t really turn off?
The Engine Stop/Start Technology is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of for a car, until I heard about cylinder deactivation, and CVTs, which both tied with the dumbest thing I ever heard for a car. When I looked for a new car in 2021, I didn't want ESS or cylinder deactivation, and that's why I bought the Mazda CX-5 CE Turbo. ESS (or iStop) didn't come on the 2021 CX-5s in the U.S., and the turbo didn't come with cylinder deactivation. And it came with a 6-speed automatic instead of a CVT. I was satisfied with my purchase.
Thoughts on mild hybrid 48V systems? Basically, truck battery tricking down to car use. Seen some Renault and Dacia cars with these systems, and they seem to work fine.

The Start/Stop system even puts more wear and tear on engine mounts.
For VWs though, I turn to activate the car and let the computer run its cycle until the dash indicators turn off, then start the car.

The one advantage of the manual transmission is, it will never need any flushing. And will work forever.
If it's running leave your hand off the key unless you're shutting it down.

Love my 2019 CRV. One of the last cars without start stop. It’s annoying.
I use a fluxcapacitor to start my vehicle and use garbage to fuel it.
Scotty needs to tell that jeep owner to clean out the car once in a while haha.
Someone’s taking a holiday but still uploading ;)
(The light goes out)
Should the Start Valve
fail to close, the engine must not accelerate and the Start aborted via the Fuel Ievers/Cutoff position.
Start/stop is so annoying as well, I would never buy a vehicle with it.
I liked my dad's old 6 volts. turn the key and push the button. Willy's, Ford flat heads, and Internationals.
Yeah, well I remember on granddad's old Chevy pickup where pushing on that big steel button next to the gas pedal to make it start, are you this old too?
You said it best. It's a Chrysler.
most of the engine wear happens when you cold start. start/stop engines are hot.
...and the oil adheres to the surfaces much longer that you are stopped.
Wrong. There are many parts inside the engine that experience more wear and tear even on every hot startups. The Start/Stop system even puts more wear and tear on engine mounts.
We're taking shop... "that's an old wife's tale" - scotty
Or use a good scan tool that can turn off start and stop permanently.
Great advice
Great information Scotty, thanks.
Don’t buy a vehicle with start/stop. Then you don’t have to turn it off.
The start stop system was the stupidest thing ever made
Classic Scotty at the beginning
We need a bluray collection of these teachings for the car owners before the internet lords decide they don't want to host beneficial knowledge anymore.
Speaking of relays? Again, not modern airliners but more General Aviation airplanes. There's a reason for a "Radio Master Switch". If you care about your expensive Avionics, isolate them. Start that ICE air-cooled airplane engine, let it stabilize and THEN turn on your Avionics suite. Sorry, you were talking "cars"......
Automatic transmission have a flex plate. Not a flywheel.
Well pin a rose on your nose
Well pin a tail on a donkey.
Gear is on torque converter...
Instructions unclear. Never started car. Now car won’t start. ⛓️💥
Try replacement on an 06 Acura tsx...ans see how much the Labor is😢😂
While one of the most impressive vehicles ever made, the Lexus RX350 has the following problem (according to ai) "A common issue with the AWD system in a 2009 Lexus RX350 is a potential for significant oil leaks due to a known defect with the oil cooler hoses, which can deteriorate over time and cause major engine damage if not addressed promptly; this is a known issue that many owners have reported and should be checked when considering a used 2009 RX350." How do I discern if this problem has occurred with a used RX350? How do I tell?
Park it somewhere that isn't soiled put some paper down under the engine go shopping or something cheap the paper /ground for oil leaks
There are cheap electronic dongles that defeat start/stop. Got it installed on our highlander and it works great. Always off now. 7:46
I'm not a car expert, but the VERY FIRST TIME I heard a stop-start car at a traffic light... I said to myself there's no way that saves fuel, but I hope they make the starter super resilient because that's a ton of wear and tear...
One could probably replace the two batteries with a marine deep cycle and turn off that autos-stop.
The one large battery is an AGM that is why he quoted $250. The small battery is strictly for the starter.
I’ve Done the Starting thing a Couple times, when the car was already Running. Couldn’t hear the motor running.
Only twice in 20 years though, and the car is still running perfectly, with Normal Maintenance 👍. 02 Crown Victoria 😊
Just found that I Definitely have to Clean one of the Battery terminals. Thanks for the Tip
*do not start car again
Got it.
Thank you.
Thank you
Scotty moved back to Houston. It's over.
Excellent 👌👍
That A-off feature has to be one of the most annoying things I deal with when I drive my family members' cars. My daily driver doesn't have it (thank god), but I don't think I know ANYBODY who actually likes that feature.
I have a simple solution for you.
is the stop& stop button on a diesel the same as a gas vehicle? they say diesels are not supposed to idle these days
Does your wife get loose with alot of vibration too? 😅😂
merry X-mas
hi scotty what do you think of the onstar system in gm
What about Toyota hybrids, how bad is the start and stop?
So if you have to replace 2 batteries instead of one then there is more eco waste to get rid of so how is it better for the environment to have a start stop system
I agree about this auto start-stop nonsense, but what can one do when they don’t have the button to shut off that horrible feature?
Good video and advice. My 2016 Ford F150 with remote starter. If you use the remote starter and turn the key too far the engine turns off.
Just buy one of those switches that bypasses the engine start/stop function.
How does all this come into play with something like a Honda CRV hybrid? I believe this is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 2 electric motors.
Garbage
Unfortunately, a lot of the "newer" used cars have this feature so how damaged is it going to be when one buys them.
EPA needs a start stop button on the EPA. 😊.
Why doesn't the government mind it's own business except ours.
Because we're the government?
Hi Scotty!!!
Scotty, does the same thing apply, start stop, to a hybrid car? My engine in my honda hybrid goes on and off from time to time
That's why hybrid batteries, starters, and engines only last 5000 miles.
If you don't buy the Jeep, then you don't need to replace two batteries.
My 1973 vw square back had a battery under the seat
Reminds me of the old corvettes that had the battery behind the drivers seat. Not a good design
Volkswagen right under the back seat 😎
Why haven't they added a feature to keep you from starting the engine when it is running? They already keep you from switching to reverse when driving normally at speed, pulling the key out or starting the car in gear, etc.
Does this apply to push buttons?
Probably not because you are just pushing it on and off
I absolutely hate cars that turn off at a stoplight and I had to spend a lot to have daytime running lights unhooked . If I pull up at night and turn my headlights off, I don’t want anyone to look out and see lights on. Lame!
He recycles a lot of videos.
2:17 👍
Scotty moved back to Houston? 🤔
Must be summer time? Scotty is sweating like a dog.
How old is this video?
8 years
What other vehicles have the batteries under the seat?
97 Cadillac sts had it under the back seat
I don't see why having it under a seat is a bad idea. The battery will stay cool there, and therefore last longer.
Old VW bugs...under back seat.
Thoughts on mild hybrid 48V systems? Basically, truck battery tricking down to car use. Seen some Renault and Dacia cars with these systems, and they seem to work fine.
My 2017 F150 has the auto start/stop and it was permanently disabled from dealership with previous owner. I’m sure it’s possible with newer vehicles.
You moved back to the old house and garage in Houston?
What a stupid question
@@georgenovotny4421
Look at the beginning section of the video, the old garage with the brown wooden doors and the gravel driveway. Are you new to thee channel, it is unmistakable! It is an older 480p piece of video tagged onto the newer 4K video with the Jeep.
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don’t you learn some respect
Almost seven million subscribers, I think his waves are just fine.🤣
