    Back in the day (the early 80's) I wanted the cafe look on my Kawasaki 900 Z1 but couldn't afford the clip-ons. I did what most of the non-sponsored privateers at the track were doing at the time, and just turned and flipped my stock bars. I sure miss that old Z1.

      @@Moonfleet41 There's actually a '73 900 Z1 occasionally roaring around the high desert where I live. I just can't justify a second mortgage on my house to give the guy that owns it what he wants for it. It's pretty hacked-up too. It's got an extended swingarm and none of the original plastic side panels or emblems. Its current state was somebody's dream at one time though.

    My pristine 2003 Sportster was blown over by Storm Cathleen and the brake lever took the impact and dented the tank on its way to oblivion. £!00 tops I thought. Nope £360!! Bloody ripoff! Got a neglected one off ebay for £70 and had already cleaned and painted it when I found this vid. Incrediby useful for the rebuild, especially the plunger cover. On the lever clevis, I found that little sod of a circlip a right pain in the bum, I almost drilled it for a split-pin. All done now and the sun's out for a change. Off to test it.

    was thinking as you were doing the outro on the video when you mentioned the clip ons, if you don't like them for whatever reason you might prefer a vrod style set of bars? they might give you the riding position you prefer with less weight on your wrists. Have a great weekend.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate, I'm leaving my options open, I have a few pairs of bars to fit in place of these if I need them, including the originals... the prime directive with it is to create a comfortable ergonomically riding position so I can really chuck the bike around and enjoy it, that'll come before looks or style, I most definitely want function over form! Enjoy your weekend, ride safe!

    Del is there any issues with mounting the brake reservoir at angle from the horizontal? Most sports bikes with clip ons have a separate reservoir that sits level.
    Good video as always.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all mate, as long as the base of the resevoir is well below the surface of the fluid and the cap's sealed tight, it's fine. Remember every time you park your bike on the sidestand and lock your steering to the left, your clutch resevoir is at the same semi vertical angle.

    Hi Del, great job again and although I'm not really a Harley fan I'm enjoying watching your progress with this one.
    Having worked on bikes for years I have learnt that putting a bit of copper slip on the reservoir cap fixing screws was a great help when it came to trying to take them off again.
    Keep up the good work, best wishes to you both from NZ.😉

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure thing mate, there probably isn't a more exposed area to the elements than the res caps, they're right up there in the wind and rain blast and it's usually cheap zinc plated screws in to aluminium castings, a recipe for seizure! I generally switch over to stainless if I can, or at the very least a little anti-seize as you say, and the biggest error of all I see made is people over tighten them... they don't need to be hammered down, it's never necessary, just nip them up! Have a great weekend there, ride safe!

    I'm still fascinated by the red rubber grease stuff, lol. Have never seen that here (western Canada) in all my years. I have always disliked with a passion, using brake fluid to lubricate any rubber brake seals, and never truly got into the silicone lubes for other things like side panel grommets etc. Love all the continual little tips and tricks that add up to headache saving tasks as always. Thanks!
