Where are the comments from peeps who criticised sanding in the booth etc. Surely everyone is entitled to their opinion and not everyone will agree with what they see on TH-cam but there’s a balance. I appreciate you have a ‘brand’ to protect but it comes across a bit fake when critical comments are removed wholesale. Every stand up comic has to deal with hecklers now and again. For what it’s worth I enjoy your videos and used your fantastic tutorial on fork seals from a few years ago to get my ZZR6 shipshape. But I don’t always agree with what or how you do things and like many other viewers expect that comments made are respected as other opinion without fear of removal.
Why did you paint over the grease nipple on the headstock? I'd have removed it, then either plugged the hole or replaced it with a new one. Pity the grey primer wasn't the finished colour. For a moment I hoped you were going for a classic 1900's Harley colour scheme!
Back in the late sixties a guy in a car body shop next to where I was serving my apprenticeship prepped and painted a Norton Featherbed frame for me for 5 quid and did a nice job of it. Mind you that was a weeks wage for me as a 16 year old apprentice. Still a bargain though.
The end result looks amazing, but I wonder about doing all that work striping the bike down, modifying the frame, only to paint it black. The gray primer -- it looks to me like "battleship gray" -- would have looked so much better. Or red, or blue, or Ducati green. Ah, but not my bike, and I will wait to see where Del is taking this -- that is always a path worth following.
I was thinking the exact same thing. If I was going to put the work in to strip the frame down and repaint it. I would make sure that it was recognizably different. Just so that there would be no question that this was customer and the effort was put in.
I once saw a Ducati Diavel witrh black frame and (Audi) grey tank/rear end. Looked really good, Del. Wonder what direction your project is taking. Now that many parts are ready. I'm sure you will surprise us. Günter from Nürnberg/Germany
It's a specially formulated frame and chassis paint, meaning it isn't 'harder', in fact it's more flexible and resilient to resist stone chips and scuffs... it has to be baked off at 60c (which it was), and then about a week later, it's fully cured...
My take away from this is: "Transforming the mundane into awesome" When first seeing the white guide coat, I was thinking gee, a white frame, how cool does that look! Then in grey- Huh! You don't see that every day, it looks great! Then in black- ooh, ahh, boy what a beauty that is, lol! So, to me, the connecting factor ends up being if you do something that is visibly a fine finish regardless of the chosen colour, it shows awesomeness no matter what. Neat. :D
Quality job Del. Sincerely thankful for all the time and effort associated with making these videos possible. The paint finish is just stunning. I've been a subscriber since your early days, and have followed this build with interest. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these projects, and have occasionally used your advice when doing repairs or mods on my own bikes. The methodical approach you take to these projects is well thought out and fun to watch. Cheers.
I see a few comments saying you shouldn't have painted it black, I think black for the frame is best choice means if in the future you or a new owner wants a colour change they only have the tank and renders to paint and not have to do a full strip down loving this series by the way
Exactly that Alan, in my opinion a frame should be a totally neutral part of the bike in terms of colour, not just for the reasons you mention, but also, then is doesn't compete for visual attention with the bodywork. Very few factory bikes with steel frames have a colour other than black, same as engines too, they're either black or silver, letting the bodywork grab the attention..!
The comments are cracking me up ... love to see the nay Sayers paint jobs on youtube ... cause that right there is a fantastic finished product regardless of what you are wearing or where you sanded (but yes surprised you sanded in there none the less) ; )

Gorgeous, Del! This build is going to be top end… 😎 Have a great weekend there, both of you! (BTW, any truth to the rumor that Boris is starting a TH-cam channel on motorcycle repair?) 🏍👍🏍
Del how do you go about spraying over vin? My frame will need go get repainted/powder coated soon, but Im concerned it would cover the vin too much and I don't have a sticker anymore?
What I've done to preserve it clearly visible is I sanded down the primer to reveal it bare metal then when I painted it I just put the minimum amount of paint over so mine shows nice and clearly, it's quite important to have it visible for MOT.
it's the same with powder as Del did with wet paint . Your coater will powder coat everything then brush of 90% of the powder very carefully on the vin . Then give it a light powder dust then bake . If your coater powder coats the frame hot they'll mask just over the vin , powder , coat pull of masking , waft a light dust over then vin then bake .. there's probably more ways but that's how I've done hundreds of them and the vin numbers survive ok . Assuming your coater is familiar with frames . etc . They'll also mask all your Internal and external threads and bearing housings etc.. just go through everything with them when you take it to be safe .. they won't mind the interaction and you'll be confident it's all going to be OK. I used to powder coat prime with zinc rich polyester powder . Semi baked ( green cure )then top coat the powder colour .Then fully bake . The zinc rich primer adheres to the blasted frame and the top coat colour adheres to the part baked zinc powder then it all fuses and flows nicely . It's not universaly done that way but will give a much more stable result .And cost more of course . Like a polyester powder version of galvanising under the top powder layer . Peace and love ✌ 💚
Hi mate, I enjoy what you do. Apart from being entertaining. I've learnt and gained the confidence, to do small jobs and maintenance. That is such a brilliant feeling for me. Thank you.
It's coming along nicely del. At first I thought maybe a hardtail bobber type bike but not now obviously since you've relocated the upper rear shock mounts. It looks like you'll be fabricating a rear guard that mounts solidly to the swingarm....nice :)
@@Moonfleet41 Ok, as soon as I think I know what you're creating something else develops. After your comment I thought maybe a hardtail subframe but that wouldn't make sense if you're keeping the shock mounts. Very intriguing mate. I'll just have to keep watching i suppose :)
