Oh man, I went at this project today, for the second time. I rented a lift for $16/hr so i could get better eyes and fingers on that big hose clamp that connects filler neck to tank. But I wasn't able to separate it.
I can now see that the POWERFUL GAS SMELL is coming from a hole in the Fuel breather line. The metal tube that goes through the wheel-well and then is hose-clamped to the rubber breather line (which connect to the tank (rubber breather line is part #42162AA060)
Anyway. I could not separate the big filler neck from the lower hose clamp. I had a pick and was carefully praising the rubber away from the steel neck, but that thing is 1.5" in there. The lower filler neck didn't have the travel/range of movement. I was worried about damaging something out of sight. Having to drop the tank on this car would be the end of it, as the rust is so bad on the exhaust and drive-shaft.
I'm thinking when I come back to to, i'll try spraying some wd40, with a straw, carefully under the rubber hose, try to get some lube. That trucker didn't want to move.

THIS! Just bought the same car about a month ago and I did a temporary DIY fix for this same problem. Managed to affix some reinforced rubber tubing with a couple hose clamps over the leaky bits. Definitely need to just buy a new neck.

Good evening, from here, Dominican Republic, Charles. I have a '98 Subaru Outback with a 2008 engine; I love this vehicle!. My Outbacky has the same problem. I'm going to do the same you showed in this magnificent video. Blessings to you.

I had the same problem with my 98 forester. I cut the bottom piece of the plastic "protector" so no more dirt can cause the same problem again

the plastic should have been perforated... like a heat shield on machine gun barrel. So water would drain out, air would circulate . Hey! Maybe I'll drill some holes in mine! It does protect against rocks hitting the fuel neck.

Do you happen to remember what size the rubber hose was where it connects to the tank?

@@CharlesAndCars second this. I live in Alaska and it’s still cheaper by a lot to order from RockAuto, even shipping something like a complete strut this far they still beat Oh-Reallys, Advance etc.
Example- complete strut was $95+35 shipping and it was still cheaper by $50, per strut, to buy from RAuto.

Hello! I have a 99 Outback, filler pipe was changed a couple years back but we had to have the tank replaced, found a decent used tank and had a local shop put it in and now we can fuel the tank without the pump kicking out CONSTANTLY….what did they do wrong?

Don't know that they did anything wrong. Check vent pipe that attaches to Filler neck. Possibly it's obstructed. Also Evap canister.

Good evening. I have 2005 Outback. Since you cut the hose, where and what size hose did you get? Was it difficult to remove the hose. Subaru no longer carry the hose. Thanks.

If I remember correctly the new filler neck came with the hose. Otherwise it would just be fuel line of the correct size.
