    I strongly agree with you the early 2000s outbacks are very reliable and a joy to drive once the headgasket repair is done 😂. I own a 01 outback limited and love the car. As long as you check on them regularly they will take care of you

      I had an 01 Outback as well, the base model. That wagon out-drove most any other vehicle in the snow.

      I have a 5 speed 01 outback currently. It's literally the best car I've ever owned. It's such an amazing car.
      I've done so many repairs on it and now that it's basically restored at 230,000 miles. It's wonderful.

      I love my outback have been following mr Subaru as long as I've owned it. I bought it used had to do head gaskets months later and months after that got a rod knock 😔. Long story short I am a mechanic pulled and rebuilt it myself about 2 years ago and couldn't be more happy. I believe the build quality of these wagons are great the stying and feel is rite up my Ally. love how it stands out in a crowd 😂

      @@eggpod4567 02 limited. 2.5 5mt, 130k miles, paid just under 3k 6 months ago. Aboslutely love this wagon over any other car I've had, and I've had almost nothing else but sporty cars and pickups.

    Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge! I bought a really nicely cared for 1999 Subaru Legacy 5 speed, 4 cyl. 2.5, a month ago! Everything works, it looks like new inside and out! So far, I think all it needs is brakes, (rotors and pads), and I think the UV Joints are a little loose and need replaced! My diagnosis is all from your videos! TY, Such a sweet simple little car! My first Outback, so far I love it! 😁💥💥💥. I’ve been devouring your videos! I am thinking of doing the work myself from watching your videos! I’m 70 years old and just starting to learn about working on a car! Your videos make it all look so easy, LOL, I’m sure it isn’t

    I would literally pay this guy monthly, just to have his contact info and ask some specific mechanical questions/advice when I have problems with my Subarus. Im sick of getting bad/wrong info about these cars.

    I had 2004 legacy sw, 2.0 petrol engine (138hp) with no issues at 500.000 km. I drove it about 15 years….bullet proof car 💪
    Now I have 2012 legacy sedan, 2.0i petrol engine (150hp) for about 3 years with 170.000 km and I love it😎only thing that I replaced was o2 sensor.
    By my opinion these are really strong, reliable and well made cars.
    Dont know if I’m lucky or Subarus just love me 🥰

    Had a 2003 Legacy Wagon. Gave it to my Sister-in-law. 270K+ and still going but needed a new muffler. HG leak, etc but no milk shake so they are keeping an eye on it. It's Used as a grocery getter. Replaced it with an OB 2013 3.6R which is fantastic IMHO. Low tech involved, but durable and steady with the power needed. Handles best in the snow compared to the other brands out there. Something about how the car drives in adverse weather conditions. They just want to be DRIVEN!

    We had a 79 Subaru when I was a kid, and that car was probably the most reliable car I've ever seen. My mom drove it 42 miles to work, 42 miles back, 5 days a week for several years. I drove the car after she got a 90 Jeep Cherokee through the early to mid 90s. Fast forward to 2006 my wife and I bought an 05 Outback. The car has been pretty expensive to own, lots of repairs, and doesn't get as good gas mileage as the old 79, even though the 79 was carburated. The more tech that goes into vehicles, the less reliable and harder they get to work on. The car industry is going in the wrong direction, it's time to go back to the basics and remember Keep It Simple Stupid.

      What are a lot of the expensive repairs other than timing belt HG? I’ve owned a 95 Legacy Wagon, 96 Impreza, 99 Outback (favorite) and my girlfriend is at 06 Forester with 110,000 miles that she said since about 70,000 miles with a very little repairs. I’m considering buying an 06 Outback as a second car that only seems to need rear suspension.

      @williamperri3437 head gaskets, main seal, rear bearings, CVs, transmission shifting hard between 1st & 2nd. Electrical system went out and couldn't even jump start it. We kept fixing things and drove it for 15 years though.

    I love my '02 Limited with 144k miles on it. Had the head gaskets and timing belt done preemptively at 90k as the car was 13 years old and I'd purchased it just the year before. Your take on that generation makes me feel even better about it.

    We bought a Forester with the EJ253 motor and 4EAT transmission. The more I drive this car, the more I like it. It's fairly easy to service and repair. We are looking to get an Outback with the same drive train this year.

    Well done, I started my association with Subaru in 2013 with the 2013 Outback 2.5i Ltd, minor issues aside it has been great, the size was perfect for me at the time, I later came across a 2006 Legacy GT in 2015 which has been so much of a blast I ordered a 2018 RA block for transplant; I also had a 17 impreza sport for a few years but gave it back because wifey wanted a miata ;)

    00-04 For the win! I bought an 02 Legacy as my first car in 2020 with only 85k (now 112k) and encountered all the issues you've listed but that list is extremely short. Just minor rust, replaced most of the suspension, brakes as you would on any 20 year old car, and once the leaky OG head gasket is fixed it's probably going to last longer than i do

    My 1998 legacy outback sedan has 236,000 miles and is still running great. All original just route maintenance. 2.2L engine that was before the 2.5L that seemed to have problems early in it's production.

    I miss my 2004 Outback. I have a 2015 Forester now. Although much nicer interior in the Forester, the old Outback just went where I wanted it to and the automatic transmission felt better than the CVT.

      from a 98 outback to a 16 forester as well. 80k on the forester now but I STILL am not sold on the CVT. It just feels,,, disconnected.

      If the cvt feels disconnected, the transmission solenoid may be failing.

      I own a 2004 outback and I love it been a awesome car haven't had any issues with it apart from having to do some paint repair on the back spoiler and hood but that's to be expected from age and also just the usual stuff like oil change filter ect but awesome reliable car tho

      @@Trollrijas not really apart from just the usual maintenance for the car I have had to replace a front CV boot tho and fix the seat belts but not too major at the end of the day it all comes down to how the car was treated if u give it shit then I'll be shit but if u look after it I'll look after u

    I have a 2012 Outback 3.6r with 135k miles on it . Except for a few quirks it’s been a great car . I am a 40 year experience auto tech with 15 years of Ford dealership experience . Car has been serviced by me since new . Main quirk- sometimes if you let off of the gas at 10-20 mph and the get back on it you get a rough engagement of the trans like a big clunk .Car has done this since it was new . It used to be used in an agricultural area and the radiator got plugged with corn silage . But that was an easy fix and gave me a chance to replace the coolant . I retired last November and the car now operates in Cabo San Lucas . Even some of the streets are dirt here . I kind of feel sorry for it but I will continue to keep it going .

    I was anti Subaru for along time until I had one for a rental car, about a year later we bought a used Crosstrek for the wife and a engine change down the road from a overheat issue we are still pounding the miles on it. I'm actually looking at adding another to the stable, the are good cars for the most part, and every brand has their issues that's for sure.

    2000 2.5l outback with fixed head gasket at 80+-k miles is still working great at 300k miles. Needed AC bearings, belts, and timing belt replaced a while back. Great car!

    I have a 2005 Subaru Outback with the 2.5i.
    Love it and other than an idler bearing blowing up in the timing belt system it has been great!
    Luckily, my motor did not get wrecked from this failure and a kit later was all it needed to keep me happy.
    After 5 years of ownership, I can say I'm soo happy I bought this vehicle and would not hesitate to buy another one.

    I own a 2012 outback used. As a master mechanic, the simplicity of the engine is everything. I did the head gaskets, timing belt tstat water pump and CVT torque converter as preventive maintenance. Only has 110k and I plan on keeping it forever.

    Sounds like a lot of people don't maintain and look after their cars.
    I have a 2005 2.5i Outback 5spd manual dual range here in Australia, which has just clocked 301,000kms (187,000miles) and it has no issues whatsoever.
    It had a full service history when I bought it a couple of years ago with 280,000kms (174,000miles) on it.
    I change the oil regularly, rotate the tyres, do regular maintenance like you should and it is brilliant.
    None of the issues with the UV damage on the dash etc, and this is South Australia where it's always hot and sunny.

    The Gen4 Legacy is easily most popular in Aus. Heaps of praise and mod-ability. Personally own the gen5 GT but the one cool thing I like about the 4 is the bigger sunroof. Great review to hear about all Legacy's! Have owned the Gen5 GT wagon for 2 years and love it to bits. Doesn't have as many mod options but gets it done (currently coilovers/better brakes/tyres and cosmetic mods) and still the option for an aftermarket dump pipe + tune. Great family/and wannabe track car!

    Would love to see something similar from you on foresters and Impreza's as well. From my experience Subaru seems to have packed the outback and legacy models with the newest technology first with the Impreza and Forester models usually a few years behind Wich of course can be a good thing in certain years.

    My mom had a 2002 Outback 4 speed auto with the cold weather package. It is probably my favorite Outback! It’s a close call between the 1st gen and 2nd gen Outbacks. She did a complete engine reseal and timing belt at 160k. Still looked like new when it was at 199k. A drunk driver side swiped half the car while it was parked so it was unfortunately totaled. We bought it back from the insurance company and still sold it for a grand to someone who was just going to drive it as is. Hope it’s still on the road and doing well for him!

    Was in the market for a Subie a few months ago and ended up with a well-maintained 2012 Outback Limited with around 110,000 on it. Love it so much, feels like a mini tank. That EJ engine looks practically bulletproof! Thanks for your insight as always!

      got one myself about two years ago and haven’t had to do anything major to it other than replacing the oil pan/gasket due to Northeast rusting from salt. Planning on getting struts replaced soon but otherwise I agree fully with you on it feeling like a tank!!

    I bought a 2017 legacy 2.5 I with 112k miles on it back in 2019. Thing drives like a dream still currently on 162k miles on it and I serviced the CVT the other day and it feels even better now ! Maintenance goes along way I guess !

The dealership calls to try to pry it away from me,trade and buy a new one, but no dice. I'm happy with the low technology in my vehicle. No big screen, no eye sight. It's been a very good car.

    Just bought my 5th Subaru. Love them all. Had a 95 legacy, 98, 03, 09 which did 300kms no problem and now a 17 Outback. much nosier cvt belt but just good to get newer tech like eyesight. Feel a bit boring but nothing else has the room and safe drive.

    I had a '01 2.5 Manual with the Green LLB like trim and I loved it. Purchased it when I was 16 in 2015 with 340000km on the clock and known head gasket issues around $250 USD. I put a sealant fluid in the radiator the minute I purchased it and just checked the water level each time before I drove it any decent distances. It lasted until 395000(ish)km and only scrapped it because it needed 4 new tires. Had a '06 for all of 10 days before I returned it to the dealer so can't say much about it but I recently brought a '11 2.5i Premium and I love it, even though it's a huge car compared to the 2nd and 3rd gen. Only being 10000kms or 3 months in, it seems great, no issues so far and the space, clearance and semi luxury feel is much appreciated. The 2nd gen is by far my favourite car I've ever owned though. Even with the head gasket issues, it taught me to look after my cars and was a great car to have as a teenager who would go skiing every weekend during the NZ winters. My family also had two 1st Gen's that we learnt to drive in, a '98 2.5 Manual and a 97' 2.5 Auto. The auto was horrible, but the '98 was a awesome car! All 3 of the late 90s, early 00's outbacks were purchased as cheap run arounds with high kms and with VERY low expectations but the manual ones turned out to be some of the best/most enjoyable cars any of my family have owned.

    I have the 2013 Legacy 3.6R Limited with 5 speed automatic with Eyesight, now with about 130,000 miles. It has been reliable until 120,000 when we had numerous suspension problems due to the poor roads in CT. We in 2022 have replaced: front struts, front controller arms, rear wheel bearings, master brake cylinder, driver window master control, and driver window motor assembly. No engine issues but very minor oil consumption around 100,000. Still have the car no failure of the head gasket, and no CVT. Still love the car and hope to make it to 200,000 miles.

    I love love love the 2nd gen BH Outback/Baja. It's just complex enough, while still being very easy to work on. Unfortunately, constantly changing government standards force manufacturers to constantly discard their most reliable designs.

    Daily driving a 2000 Outback from the great north Canada. This car had been from Canada , to California, to NewYork then PA and now in Delaware. Love my dad wagon. And yes my 2000 dad wagon has had or has every problem you mentioned.

    Sold my 99 Lincoln Towncar. Picked up an 02 LL Bean. 3.0. Live it. Everything Mr. said was an issue is spot on. I have all of without thankfully. These are so rare here in Oregon because everyone drives them and loves them. I had to splash down $3200 cash the day it was for sale. Not even listed yet. 4 people behind me trying to buy also. It has plenty of power and a joy to drive. Awsome in snow and ice due to how the axles work. takes power from any slipping & diverts to ones with traction. 3 months into this car & recommend them to anyone. Safe.

    I have a 03 outback with 321000 miles, head gasket was done a year ago, did the timing belt twice and hydrologic tensioner. The motor mounts are starting to go. I absolutely love it.

    Proud owner of a 2003 h6 vdc outback (EUDM), wonderful car. One note from the video - I don’t believe the struts are mounted in a way you showed at 5min speakimg about rust. That is how struts were mounted on older foresters and impreza wagons, but not these outbacks, so less issue there in terms of rust.

    I liked the 2000's OB's as well. We had a 2002 VDC and a 2001 Base version. One feature I really miss is how the rear seat bottom would flip up and when the seat back went down it was very level. Also, the rear seat bottom formed a wall preventing stuff from sliding up into the front seat area. It made packing stuff in there really handy and secure if you stopped quickly.

    Have had a few 01-04 Outbacks, both 4 & 6 cylinder. Love the cars. Easy to work on. Rust will force these cars off the road before mechanical failure. Just wish there was more room in the back seat.
    Our 2014 2.5 has been great. Way more interior room, but I too am dealing with a cam carrier leak. Hasn't gotten worse in 55k so live with 1qt loss every 4k, which is my change interval now. Have to do rear wheel bearings, but at least they're bolt-in and not the dreaded stuck-bolt design Subaru used for so many years.

    My 2012 Outback. Had the Torque converter covered under warranty paid $100 fee. Then about 3 months ago at 154,445 miles my Valve Body had to be replaced I was luck to go to a local guy in Salisbury NC rather than dealership save me $450. Other than those two issues it has been rock solid and will go 100K more.

    I have a 2018 Subaru Forester Base 6MT, and just swapped for the day with my mom's 2014 Forester Premium CVT. Had the wife try it out. Coming from her 2014 Chevy Equinox, she's in love. Better vision through larger windows, peppier, quieter, more storage space. She'll probably go Subaru after her Chevy dies. Could be any day now. 😉

      @@sparky1044 Honestly, her Equinox has taken the two of us from Cleveland to Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and the Badlands over a 3 week time frame, and pulled a 1k pound teardrop trailer to Mt Rushmore, so it's a decent car. But it's also had more repairs than both my Saturns....

    There is a place in Denver which seems to specialize in refurbishing older Subarus. They get most of them from Colorado so rust is minimal. Japanese Car Connection or something like that. I looked there for a Subaru for my daughter but she brought a FJ Cruiser. Thanks for sharing.

    I have to agree with you and what all you've said. I own a 2002 legacy gt 5 speed with 293,000 miles on it. Got it with 191k on it. Ran it harder than I ever should of and the only time it left me sit was when the fuel pump housing cracked. Other than that it still runs and drives but does use a little bit of oil. Did have to replace the trans because the input bearing went bad, but I do plan on replacing it and keeping that transmission. My friend had a 2008 legacy with the 5 speed and it had the sticky dash. It also suffered from a rough idle. This car only had around 50k miles on it. Thing would run fine until it warmed up, then run rough until it would stall. I couldn't figure it out. The Subaru dealer couldn't figure it out. They started throwing parts at it and no prevail. They called a bunch of higher end techs in and after about a month they found an issue with the wiring harness that was causing the problem.

    in my opinion the EZ36 is one of the most reliable engines subaru has ever made. Ive been with the Subaru dealer for about 4 years now and its hands down the least worked on engine! love em.

    Got a 2001 Legacy GT Limited 5MT. Owned it since 2006. Love it. The wind noise sucks though
    Replaced the head gaskets myself in 2021. Replaced front CV axles, ball joints, tie rod ends, front/rear sway end links and struts/shocks (with coilovers) in late 2023/early 2024.

    Had a 200 Outback wagon that I loved. Built like a tank (in a good way). Would still have it if I hadn't been t-boned by a guy running a light at 50mph. Right into my door. A and B pillar's bent, driver door smashed up and I couldn't open it but NO ingress. Heck, I could still roll the window down! But it was totaled. Only had 70k on it in 2012 when I replaced it with a new (2012) Outback limited. Thanks for the all the info. Love your channel!

    Bought a 2008 outback LL bean from my work. 330,000kms for $1500. Transmission lines blew off the rad. I just lopped them lol. Changed a few arms in the rear and trailing arm bushings. Cars been going strong for last year no issue. Wish Subaru made them like they use too.

    I have two 3.6 Outback’s. The 2010 is a very solid model and had some recalls for shaking front ends. I personally hated this car to start with but found out all my problems were do to a horrible service department at a specific dealer. After the car was repaired probably it has been a great car/SUV. It has taken two hard accidents and still a solid car. At 130k. The kid is rolling it now.
    The 2019 Outback had the radio failure and took 6 months to get a replacement. All in all a good solid vehicle.
    I will agree the batteries seem to have a high failure rate, including mine separating and leaking acid. I replace them with AGMs and have gotten 7 years of service from them.
    The lager Outback’s have their advantages. I have transported a full size dryer and a complete long block for a small block Chevy in mine.

      During winter time with salty roads I rinse the undercarriage once a week. Although I bought it already having a rust spot at the rear wheel well. I actually want to improve it a bit at least make it look better, has some bubbles.

    just bought a 2017 at 59k miiles. needs struts all around and 1 inside dome bulb and the left front blinker bulb. other than that, regular maintanence. no oil leaks, no issues at all so far.

    As a subaru tech for 20+ years. This was a great video. I think subaru forgot what made them great back in the day. Simple great 4x4 cars. I have owned and worked on models from the 70ies on. I miss the old reliable ej22 and the so underpowered ea82.

    2015 Outback with the 2.5 is on its second windshield and battery. Thankfully Subaru extended the warranty on the CVT as it is starting to shudder a bit at low speed in hot weather. Doubt it will last as long as my 06 Accord which still runs great. Thank you Mr Subaru for the great video!

    I have an '05 Outback, the only time i experienced ghost walking was on a family road trip.
    The roads were snowy/icy and the car was loaded to the max, including a rooftop carrier. I couldn't get above 30 without the rear end stepping out seemingly randomly.
    I believe the cause is a combination of worn suspension and the change in rear toe when carrying a heavy load. It never happened when unloaded.
    I replaced all the rear bushings, shocks, and installed rallitech overload springs. It corrected the ghost walking and significantly improved the handing in all scenarios.

    Fun fact, although it was not offered anywhere else(or at least I'm aware of), Canadians still were able to get a 6-speed manual for both 2015-2017 Outback and Legacy. Gone after the refresh however.

    I have a 09' SH Forester X. It is lowered on coilovers with rear adjustable LCA's, adjustable lateral links, 25mm rear sway bar and stronger sway bar end links front and rear. Also 18x9.5 wheels with sticky tires. Handles like a race car but is as slow as hell. Keeps me out of trouble. Bought it used with 86,000 miles on it. Easy to work on. Easy to maintain. Have had no engine issues. This spring gonna do valve cover gaskets, timing belt and water pump. I want to get an aluminum radiator and silicone hoses too. On my WRX the plastic radiator tank cracked at about 130,000 miles. I agree with you on the looks but the SH Forester looks totally different with the STi Forester front grille and bumper.

    My 2014 Outback has 120k and few problems so far. Constant headlight bulb replacement, weird clunking noises that no one can figure out what’s doing it, and a quart of oil needs to be added every 3k. Rust is becoming a huge issue but much of that is happening where damage has occurred and repaired. Also I live in the upstate NY rust belt lol. I’m 6’6” and love the roomy interior. Would absolutely buy another Subaru!

    I bought a used 2018 3.6R in February 2023 it had 50,000 on the clock with all service records, CA. Car. One owner. And other than the known quirks, passenger window regulator switch, every once in a while I get the black screen on the dash, I just turn the car off and back on and the radio works again. And I’ve never had the fuel gauge go under 90 miles left even though I new I was almost out of fuel. Which leaves me to believe it has the issue of the fuel sensor not reading correctly to let me know I am going to run out of gas. Other than those three things this vehicle has been fantastic. I have an appointment next month to get the transmission serviced at 81,550 miles. which surprisingly Subaru recommended. I hope considering I don’t do hard launches and I always let the engine warm up to regular idle before I put the car in gear that it will last me for many years to come. As far as the quirks the car is under warranty for the next 3 years
