Advent calendar I made for a friend who suffers from Seasonally Affected Depression was "Midwinter Salad" - a wall rack with 24 pots of soil and a drip system (you filled the tank and it dripped into each pot - no spills, no mess) with a grow-light above it. Each day had a sachet of seeds to plant, of different varieties of lettuce, salad greens, radishes, cress, and herbs. By Christmas day, the first of the seeds was grown enough to start being edible, and by New Year's Day, she could pick herself a salad every day. I made sure there were enough seeds for things like radishes that she could reseed to last a month. It took time to build, but that was 20 years ago, and the person I gave it still has it and still uses it. She's currently growing alpine strawberries, fresh herbs and 10 different salad greens, so that all through Winter she's got fresh salad and fresh-picked strawberries.
Did the same this year for the first time, since I was looking for something new and special. Now my wife and I enjoy a different cup of tea literally every day. And have still a lot left after christmas :-)
My husband and I watched the coffee calendar being opened, in complete agreement with everything being said. The moment the words “in Denmark” were said I literally yelled out “why don’t we have that!”and ordered it immediately after. I’m so excited that one of the cook products featured here was something locally available for me.
The coffee bags seem like they would also be a really cool way to bring along actual coffee grounds (instead of instant) on camping trips or other holidays - easy to transport, easy to brew. Very cool design!
Taking a little all metal french press or a hand filter isn't really much harder is it? And those are actually made to last for many years. Since the filtering happens somewhere in the pouch I wouldn't be tooo sure about the reusabilty. Maybe if you somehow clean it completely (which might be a nightmare), but I guess the "reusable" thing is more of a nice PR buzzword in this case.
@@stefan514 That's a good point, I haven't seen the inside! I suspect the filter is in the little pour nozzle but obviously don't know that for sure. Was just thinking of needing to be super light/compact for things like backpacking trips. :)

I think the coffee one was the best. Like Jamie said its something that actually fits into your schedule already while also letting you explore different coffees. Bonus that its also ethically thought out.

I actually considered buying the Terre Exotique spice advent calendar for my spice-lover of a brother! It looked lovely! But ultimately I went with Terre Exotique spice gift set with those metal tins full of spices that are not very common here in Estonia - ground Szechuan pepper, smoked paprika and Chinese five spice. I think he'll love it!
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative there is also a spice mix and sets with their recipie and description in spicy & co, i bought one for a loved one and it’s amazing!
As someone who lives in a small apartment and can't really be bothered to do the full christmas decoration thing... I like the idea of the advent calendar that looks like a christmas tree because it could count as a coffee table budget christmas decoration haha
I bought the Candy Kittens advent calendar for my Mom, put it together myself and presented it like a 'ta-dah' moment when she got home! It's a really great calendar and it helps that they put a few extras in so you can still have two per box while enjoying some yourself! Her birthday is this month too so I could even stick extra in that particular day! ;)

Let's be real though. How many coffee enthusiasts are going to scoop out old grounds from a plastic bag, to do another brew in that plastic bag, when they 100% already have a pour-over set? And as much as the packaging claims to be reusable and sustainable and CO2 neutral etc. I gotta wonder if all that complicated plastic and manufacturing really is better overall compared to just a regular ol' paper bag of beans/grounds?
The coffee and spice calendars were my preferred calendars of this set. What's hot this year with my friends is the Bonne Maman jam calendar and tea calendars from tea blenders in my region.
The idea that you make 2 cups makes me think of a shared breakfast time with your loved one in the morning. Enjoying something new together, an island of precious idyllic silence over a new exotic blend in otherwise chaotic time of the day, what else would you want.
My three year old daughter said at the beginning of the video, "Wow. The Sorted Daddies (that's what she calls you all) must make lots of money because they have to buy a lot of stuff all the time." This made Jamie's comment after the last box even better.
I disagree with Barry my dad has bought me a DIY advent calendar the last 2 years, and I love putting it together. Last year was a Christmas village, this year a garland. I would be dissapointed if I didn't get to make it.
i used to love the lego advent calendar as a kid. i didn’t put the calendar itself together but got to build something every day (well, every fourth day, i had to share it with my family haha)

Think about it this way: it's like 8 GBP per day. That's not too bad, and as a way to give someone you love a gift that's going to give them 25 days of excitement, it's an even better value.

A few years ago I suggested to a friend living in a state (US) that had leagalize MJ, when my state hadn't, he should produce an advent calendar with a nug of different strain for each day. I'm still waiting for a commercial provider to capitalize on my idea.
My partner and I celebrate the Winter Solstice rather than Christmas, but a friend got us a fabulous advent calendar one year. Our circle of friends love table top games, so this friend gave all of us advent calendars that gave a die every day and occasionally 2 die. By the end you have three sets of dice and four random fun dice. It was awesome and I wish I could remember which company made it. Nice alternative for your gaming friends.
Well today I learned, I’ve been sold short all my life as far as advent calendars go - since we celebrate Christmas on the 24th, our calendars only have 24 doors… 😅

I agree. And I thought an advantage of this calendar is that the giver can customise it. You can put whatever you want in the box - it doesn’t necessarily have to be the vegan gummy🤷🏻♀️

I thought all the calendar were interesting but as a mother of 4 the Christmas tree was a wonderful idea. Despite Barry's remarks and I'm surprised since he has a child, it would be such a fun activity to do as a family. My kids would love this and I'm going to find it and buy one ASAP.
That coffee pouches seem like an ingenuous idea. I can see someone taking that into an office job and having their nice coffee right at their desk after one trip to fill up the bag. Only thing is I wonder how the resealable bit holds up after being used for a while.

Waaaiiiittt a minute.... so you guys have Advent Calendars with 25 doors? You get your presents at the 25th? Never knew that :D. We get ours at Christmas Eve so our Advent Calendar only has 24 doors.
I've always made my advent calendars myself, so I wouldn't buy any of these. Of the ones presented however only one stuck out and not in a good way. There is just no way 25 pouches of 2 cup coffees which are a plastic on the inside, paper on the outside laminated product (impossible to recycle) is good for the environment no matter how many labels you stick on it. It's like saying "hey, I'm driving to the bakery 150 yards down the street using my environmentally green Tesla" - when you could and should be walking. Let's not kid ourselves, nobody is going to reuse those pouches so they end up straight in a landfill or a garbage incineration power plant.
Very cool ideas! I do like the idea of the Fortnum and Mason’s Feasting Calendar and using the products at the Christmas meal. The box itself is great for use afterwards too like toys, trinkets or accessories. I notice this Calendar is SOLD OUT, however they have BEAUTIFUL basket hampers which are cheaper. The coffee pouches are great for camping, road trips or going to a destination where you do not have all the modern comforts other than boiling water.
This year i bought one from a local chocolatier with a buch of different stuff in it (so far i opened : some ruby chocolate with darl chocolate pearl inside, some salt creamy caramel (almost toffee consistency) and a strawberry marshmallow)
That spice advent calendar is right up my alley... But also, I'm in culinary school, so my parentals would know that they'd be treated to a month of not having to make supper... So if they found it, they'd get it. XD what I'm really saying is... Why isn't it already in my hands? Lol

I got a Bonne Maman jam advent calender from amazon for £15. Its pretty good so far, 25 different mini pots of jam and it comes with a little tea spoon to serve. I'll probably be diabetic by the new year but it made for a nice change from chocolate! Love your videos guys xxx

I would totally go for the coffee one! I'm usually more of an espresso drinker, but this seems like a fun way to explore the pour over style :) For the third year in a row I've bought myself and my partner the tea advent calendar from Bird and Blend. It tastes amazing every time and the flavours are very creative. The shop originated in Brighton and I found out about them while I lived there, so there's always a big nostalgia factor with it too since I've now moved abroad.
We don't have advent calendars in México, and now I'm here sitting watching some of my favourite creators reviewing them and thinking oh I want one of those :(

I think a great idea for an advent calendar is 1 type of seed for each day and when spring arrives after december u can grow them into a lovely garden

I received the Candy Kittens advent tree myself, personally I got the impression that it should have been assembled by the giver rather than the receiver.
I agree. And I thought an advantage of this calendar is that the giver can customise it. You can put whatever you want in the box - it doesn’t necessarily have to be the vegan gummy🤷🏻♀️

I thought all the calendar were interesting but as a mother of 4 the Christmas tree was a wonderful idea. Despite Barry's remarks and I'm surprised since he has a child, it would be such a fun activity to do as a family. My kids would love this and I'm going to find it and buy one ASAP.

That coffee pouches seem like an ingenuous idea. I can see someone taking that into an office job and having their nice coffee right at their desk after one trip to fill up the bag. Only thing is I wonder how the resealable bit holds up after being used for a while.
Someone said in another comment they last well for about 6 re-uses. That's not too bad.
In future could you please do these types of video mid November as it's now too late to get any of these and the coffee one would've been a perfect gift for a couple of people.

I've always made my advent calendars myself, so I wouldn't buy any of these. Of the ones presented however only one stuck out and not in a good way. There is just no way 25 pouches of 2 cup coffees which are a plastic on the inside, paper on the outside laminated product (impossible to recycle) is good for the environment no matter how many labels you stick on it. It's like saying "hey, I'm driving to the bakery 150 yards down the street using my environmentally green Tesla" - when you could and should be walking. Let's not kid ourselves, nobody is going to reuse those pouches so they end up straight in a landfill or a garbage incineration power plant.
The geekness in Barry finally comes out when he's thinking he wants to take his F&M calendar home and realizes they've already eaten Day 1.
Actually he said "could we send it back" because it's so expensive and then realised that they couldn't because they've already eaten one.

Very cool ideas! I do like the idea of the Fortnum and Mason’s Feasting Calendar and using the products at the Christmas meal. The box itself is great for use afterwards too like toys, trinkets or accessories. I notice this Calendar is SOLD OUT, however they have BEAUTIFUL basket hampers which are cheaper.
The coffee pouches are great for camping, road trips or going to a destination where you do not have all the modern comforts other than boiling water.
I don't even drink or like coffee but that one was probably the best one. It just seems like the most thoughtful gift for a coffee lover.
This year i bought one from a local chocolatier with a buch of different stuff in it (so far i opened : some ruby chocolate with darl chocolate pearl inside, some salt creamy caramel (almost toffee consistency) and a strawberry marshmallow)
That spice advent calendar is right up my alley... But also, I'm in culinary school, so my parentals would know that they'd be treated to a month of not having to make supper... So if they found it, they'd get it. XD what I'm really saying is... Why isn't it already in my hands? Lol

The spice calendar is probably something I would be happiest to receive (or buy) if only it was vegan. SUCH a great way to explore some unique ingredients and *spice up* your cooking game!

I got a Bonne Maman jam advent calender from amazon for £15. Its pretty good so far, 25 different mini pots of jam and it comes with a little tea spoon to serve. I'll probably be diabetic by the new year but it made for a nice change from chocolate! Love your videos guys xxx
I had that last year, no regrets. Just nice small and tasty jams and a little surprise at the end.

I would totally go for the coffee one! I'm usually more of an espresso drinker, but this seems like a fun way to explore the pour over style :) For the third year in a row I've bought myself and my partner the tea advent calendar from Bird and Blend. It tastes amazing every time and the flavours are very creative. The shop originated in Brighton and I found out about them while I lived there, so there's always a big nostalgia factor with it too since I've now moved abroad.
We don't have advent calendars in México, and now I'm here sitting watching some of my favourite creators reviewing them and thinking oh I want one of those :(
