One very useful redeeming feature of Bisto gravy is that it's suitable for vegetarians. So, if you have any veggie dinner guests, you can still make your fancy homemade gravy from the roast, but also knock up a little Bisto batch on the side.

As a German, I agree, making your own Glühwein (mulled wine) can be the best option. Although you can usually find at least one booth at the Christmas Market that makes good one. The supermarket ones are usually unenjoyable.
I have made my own with white or rosé wine before, since red wine gives me headaches anyway.

Living in Sweden I don’t have any choice but to make my own mince pies and filling and I have to say, after having made my own I wouldn’t go back to store bought. Same with gravy. You can’t beat a homemade gravy! I still import bisto though but I use it to thicken sauces like Bolognese and add a little flavour.

With gravy... my mum has always done a "lazy combo", use bisto gravy granules, but then add all the meat juices, a stock cube perhaps...
And though she had a bad habit of turning it into jelly with cornflour, it generally works well
I'm a big fan of bisto's powdered gravy (Bisto best I htink?)
It's a little thick, but works fantastically and works well if you want gravy with sausages or in a stew where you have less meat juice/stock available

I love how you guys said the £4 for 200g cranberry sauce was expensive. I’m from Los Angeles USA so doing some conversions, a can of that jello cranberry sauce that comes out still in the shape of the can (the lowest quality one) is about £1.90 for 397g. The one from a store like M&S is £8 for 320g, and one from a store like Daylesford is £16 for 370g...
