  • I had to come back and visit Mount Jerome, the Victorian part of this amazing cemetery. Here we take a look at the mausoleums, Vaults and crypts. 100s of years after burial what happens to those interred here. From the beautifully carved coffins to the shells left behind.

    What a beautiful Victorian cemetery! You can clearly see the difference between the new and old! The visible coffins were in great shape for being over 100 years! You could spend a week in here and still not see everything! Thanks for this great tour Sue!

    Incidentally Sue those wreaths on the old graves were called “immortals” made out of fine China or bisc porcelain, sometimes open,sometimes in a cage, with an added dove of peace, and sometimes with a glass dome covering to protect, as they were so fragile. But not fresh flowers.

    What a stunning cemetery! Burial vaults were not used early on and when a coffin would decay, the graves would collapse. The ground would become uneven. I see that here in the states in old cemeteries. As a result, gravestones are skewed in many directions due to coffin collapse. Cenotaph stones are no longer allowed here. They must have a solid base. You have to be REALLY careful where you step. Thank you Sue. I always love your historic walks….❤️

    You did really well Sue, that’s a massive place! I’m sure I’d be lost in no time if I were there on my own. Awful lot more mausoleums than you realise at first glance, makes me wonder what in fact is holding them all up, as they must weigh so much with all that brick work, and being so close together I wonder if they dug sound foundations! That was a very strange one hidden behind that grave, open except for just bars! Could see like a jam jar in there, but i don’t think it would have fit through the bars, so don’t know how it got in there. I’ve heard of ventilated crypts, but that was a bit OTT!
    It was really interesting….thankyoi so much. Love and hugs Helen 🙋‍♀️💐😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰

      Thank you for the explanation. I was wondering how that could have happened. So, at one time, there were wooden coffins stacked on top of the lead coffins, and when the lead coffins started breaking, the wooden coffins were removed from the crypt and the opening was then sealed up. Is that what you think happened?

      wooden coffins on top?

    • @jamielieberg7053

    One of the reasons I really enjoy your channel is beyond your obvious love of the monuments and their artistry and craftsmanship is the history of some of the notable names on the memorials. I have a passion for history and once I saw the Barry memorial I immediately did some research.
    The Barry family, of whom Penelope was the youngest child and only daughter, had Edward Barry - 5th Baronet Barry of the City of Dublin as their father. He died in 1836. Her older brothers Edward and John were the 6th and 7th Baronet Barry. James did not inherit the title, so most likely John had a son who did.

    I have to say, Sue, I am impressed with you walking all by youself in the graveyards/cemetries. In South Africa where I live I would never dare. We have homeless people and addicts living in graveyards here and it can be very dangerous to walk through cemetries /graveyards. A few people has been attacked. It is sad because it stop you from paying respect to your loved ones and make exploring like this impossible.

      There are only certain places I'd feel safe walking on my own, this is one of them, definitely we need to be mindful of our surroundings, which makes me annoyed. Life certainly is different these days and we just can't chance it

    Its probably been asked and answered but I wonder why such huge vaults/tombs/crypts/mausoleums for just a couple coffins? (Outside of family members not being buried there as maybe thought they would be.) Great tour/walk there. Thanks Sue.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's always strange to see such huge crypts etc and then only one or two coffins, maybe rest of family moved away 🤔

    Hi Sue! Chiming in from Washington State, USA 🇺🇲! Mt. Jerome is so peaceful, and beautiful! We have some very large cemeteries State-side, but I think this is the largest I've ever seen. Our largest cemeteries are from the 15-1600's, and still have burials in the New England States; and in our Southern States where we have cemeteries dating back to the 1840's-1860's during the Civil War, with present burials as well, with rolling hills. I was amazed by all the underground, and single (green door) mauseleums at St. Jerome. Ya could get lost in their for days before finding your way out. This is truly fascinating!

      @@SerenitySueGraveyards Have a similar cemetery that's Victorian I my home town. But not on this scale but Victorian stonework is amazing to look at. When I get a chance and weather permitting I'll film some of the ones that stand out from the rest. I do like this one, and I'd be quite happy to walk through. A woman in my town got done recently for her dog mess around the cemetery. It was actually recorded from the council inspectors. Who'd been keeping an eye on her. She got banned from the Parks and places of interest. Which is only fair she got penalised with a £500 plus fine.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good, there's nothing as bad as dog crap on paths as you walk, it's good they made her pay, it will stop others doing the same..yes definitely film some, that would be cool

      @@SerenitySueGraveyards Well yes because the cemetery is full of grass. Whichever roots you take from the drive through. So her dog was crapping on the grass. Disgusting behaviour because the cemetery is still used today for burials. Just glad she got caught and a hefty fine with it 👍

    Ms Sue. Those underground vaults remind me of both New Orleans and some in my area up north. They also remind me of the cemetery in Argentina. The reason for the depth is that families would be stacked in them so you would have generations of burials. Down in the south they would wait a year and a day then push the remains back and be ready for new burial. That is why you would see lists of names and dates but only if it was not a private or family crypt.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Rakkasan, interesting indeed, I know our own family graves have several in a ot too but I'd never seen such a deep underground crypt

    Can u imagine if that grate wasn’t there on the vault plot and you fell down there omg you couldn’t get out, it’s so far down. That’s so unusual, never saw anything like that ! Did u notice that jar too ? It looked newer then the burials to me but if it was, how did it not break if it was dropped. Btw that man at beginning you said hello, I didn’t see him coming, I’m guessing you did but he scared crap out of me

    Hi, just wanted to leave a comment.. you came up on my recommendation's , this is a beautiful cemetery 🙏💞🙏.
    Where is this located at?, country and state??? I know my dad's people is from Alabama, we have a cemetery, in the middle of a forest, Family graveyard, that the first Sunday of June everyone refreshes the head stone ( it's called Decorarion Day) with new decorations, flowers. Like a family reunion, every1 brings a dish and at noon, we give thanks and talk to one another🥰 our family members take care of the ground, Grass cutting, painting the old church, ect. There is a long homemade wooden table put food on, we even have outhouse, but I will never use, I'm afraid a snake would come up and bite my bootie lol. You take care it was nice seeing your video
