Hidden Crypt, with coffins, is this the stench of death?
Find a Grave
Edward Charles Sackville-West, 5th Baron Sackville (13 November 1901 - 4 July 1965) was a British music critic, novelist and, in his last years, a member of the House of Lords. Musically gifted as a boy, he was attracted as a young man to a literary life and wrote a series of semi-autobiographical novels in the 1920s and 1930s. They made little impact, and his more lasting books are a biography of the poet Thomas de Quincey and The Record Guide, Britain's first comprehensive guide to classical music on record, first published in 1951.
As a critic and a member of the board of the Royal Opera House, he strove to promote the works of young British composers, including Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett. Britten worked with him on a musical drama for radio and dedicated to him one of his best known works, the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
Sackville-West was born at Cadogan Gardens, London, the elder child and only son of Major-General Charles John Sackville-West, who later became the fourth Baron Sackville, and his first wife, Maud Cecilia, née Bell (1873-1920). He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. While at Eton he studied the piano with Irene Scharrer, his housemaster's wife, and became highly proficient, winning the Eton music prize in 1918. His partner Desmond Shawe-Taylor said of him, "not many boys can have played at a school concert the Second Concerto of Rachmaninov. He even contemplated a pianist's career, but was deterred by poor health." At Oxford he made many literary friends, including Maurice Bowra, Roy Harrod and L. P. Hartley, and literature began to rival music as his chief interest. He left Oxford without taking his degree and embarked on a career as a novelist, writing a series of autobiographical novels.
Father Nicholas Sheehy (1728-1766) was an 18th-century Irish Roman Catholic priest who was executed on the charge of accessory to murder. Father Sheehy was a prominent and vocal opponent of the Penal Laws, which disenfranchised and persecuted Catholics in Ireland. His conviction is widely regarded as an act of judicial murder amongst supporters of the Irish rebellion.
Sheehy was hanged at Clonmel on 15 March 1766. Others accused were also convicted for the murder of John Bridge and executed (3 May 1766), including Edmond Sheehy, cousin of the priest, and Ned Meehan, a prominent Catholic farmer who refused to bear witness against Sheehy when offered his liberty in prison. Sheehy was hanged on a scaffold in Clonmel opposite St. Peters and Paul's Church, where there was a plaque to commemorate his death. His head was then severed and stuck on a spike over Clonmel Gaol, as a warning against agrarian violence and remained above the porch at Clonmel jail for ten years.

So disrespectful to use a mausoleum as a shed! Surely they are not allowed to use it for their own purposes? Beautiful plaque and as you say, it is very sad to see it in such a poor condition. I too would have been so tempted to go down into the crypt…
I'm nosey and curious, if it was locked then that's it but I was so temped to go down but it smelled horrible
You are so right!!!!
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Something tells me your sense of caution was well founded. I'd have been too terrified to discover the source of that foul stench.
It's a desecration of a family resting place, to use it as a store room. The smell, is possibly cornelious showing his distaste fore this desecration of his final resting place.
Most times I'd go in but I usually use my gut and my gut said no
Using someone's mausoleum as a storage unit so disrespectful.
That poor priest drawn and quartered how gruesome. 🇺🇸
Gruesome history but during Penal Laws priests continued to serve mass in secret, this was unfortunately why most died
Have to agree, disgusting….please I hope they see this vlog and rectify their madness.
Well, the groundskeepers seem a practical lot, don't they? I can hear it now... "Here's a nice mausoleum to store our kit in. We won't have to drag it 'round in our lorry all the time." There's so much personal history here. Mahalo for showing us, your Hawai'i subscribers, this beautiful place. Aloha to you all.
Aloha to you, I agree, it's lazy on their part a shed is practical and easy for them store their stuff
Lovely to hear your voice Sue xx
Thank you so much! Lorraine
That was very interesting to see the way down into the crypt. What a shame they have not shown more respect to that gentleman's resting place. Very interesting cemetery and those mountains were beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it Ben 😊
Its extremely disrespectful that the Mausoleum has been used basically as a shed, it needs to be fixed. There are some very beautiful places to be laid to rest in over there in Eire. Fine video guys.
Thanks Barry ❤️
This is a beautiful place! The scenery is gorgeous! But, it's so sad and disrespectful how they are treating that mausoleum! Just shameful!!
It really is beautiful, yes it's sad to see it like that
If I was buried in a mausoleum I'd be okay with them using it as a storage room I mean I'm dead not like I'm going to know lol
Haha, true lol
If I was stuck in a mausoleum I'd be thankful somebody's coming in my mausoleum it wouldn't bother me
What a gorgeous location! Like you said, why couldn't they put a shed up instead of using the mausoleum? Makes me so mad. It was a beautiful tour Sue. Thank you.
Yes, I don't understand why the do this 😕
Hello GV wishing your family well too💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Thanks Tina ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards 💯💯💯💯💯😊😊😊😊😊
What a beautiful place to have a cemetery. I admire your bravery for lifting the crypt slab and looking inside.
Thank you, not brave just a morbid curiosity ❤️
Such a beautiful graveyard & beautiful Country. A real shame about the disrespect shown to those resting in the mausoleum.
Yes, it's sad to see
Blimmey as they say it's a long way from Tipperary 🍀 Love your channel Sue 🍀 Always love your concern about the dearly departed 🙏 Love and respect to all the people of IRELAND 🍀🍀🍀🍀✌️ cheers Stephen 🍀
Cheers Stephen, Tipperary is a long way lol
My Great-great grandparents were Rice from Ireland. They were disowned from the family fortunes when they came to the United States. That's how it was back in the day. Family legend also tells of them fighting with William Wallace. I know it was all Hollywood but I remember the guy in the Braveheart movie that said he came from his island to fight with Wallace and find a bit of truth to that since the family tale goes back 100 plus years as told to me by my Great-grandmother back in the 1960s (she was about 93 at the time). Way before the movie. IDK but would like to find out.
That's so interesting, that sounds so interesting
Great to watch 💯👍
Thanks Dwaine, everytime I see your profile I love your dog ❤️ sorry about long intro but it gives everyone a chance to come in
Sue, you are just like me. Curious with respect. Just amazing construction, AND historic.
Yes, it's a healthy curiosity and if I didn't peep, I'd be kicking myself for years, so yes it's OK to be like us as long as you leave it as you find it 😊
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Same here!
I love your videos and your curiosity! You sound a lot like me; wanting to go into the basement where the coffins are. I wish you would. But wear a mask when you go into the mauseleums...
Sometimes I get myself in the most awkward situations out of curiosity lol
Using that mausoleum as a shed is so disrespectful! Sad 😞. Great views of the mountains! Thanks!
It sure is Liz but the views are stunning
I wonder if it had a limited time on it, like I said previously about our graves now only having 85/89 years then it’s reused. Although back in those times I doubt that contract was in place.
It’s very sad and disheartening.
I completely agree with you, I can't understand buying a grave and it not mine forever or it being reused, it's meant to be your final resting place 💔
Lovely tour on a lovely day ..
With a lovely couple ..
Thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it William 😊
This is a beautiful resting place. Very serene and peaceful.
You two are respectful and knowledgeable.
Nice video. Thank you
Thank you very much!
A store room? How awful! No mausoleum should be used as a storage area. My husbands mother was in a nursing home. He and his brothers donated a HUGE Virgin Mary statue. It was placed in a small chapel. The last time we went there….it was a STORAGE AREA!! No respect.
No way, that's terrible 😡
Great video Sue. Your camera caught the beauty of this place. Ireland is a enchanting place.
It is enchanting, I often feel that way in the old graveyards
Thanks for this grave tour.😊
Very welcome 🙏
How disrespectful to use his mausoleum for storage..Great vid Sue 🍀
I know, right? Thanks Bailey
That beautiful old mausoleum. Nothing but sad just terrible. And total disregard disrespect. This is a mental picture I won't forget. Thank you Sue
Yes, I just don't understand it, laziness and disrespectful
That church is absolutely one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen❤🇺🇸
Thanks Terri ❤️
Appreciate you both fascinating thank you
Our pleasure!
It’s peculiar that the crypt floor entrance wasn’t locked or sealed.
It really is
Beautiful. Thank you Sue, I'm so happy I came across your videos 💖💖💐💐🏆

How disrespectful to use a mausoleum as a shed! This world has really gone downhill! Stay well Sue. Beautiful cemetary!❤😊
It is beautiful for sure, first I thought they were doing it up first until I saw lawnmowers 😕
It's always a pleasure to see your content ❤
I appreciate that!

I still enjoy seeing the older headstones and the dates they provide. Shows either a long life or a short one, depending on how things were back then. Tc and stay safe, ty for the video.
Thanks so much ❤️
Beautiful area. It's a shame about the condition of that mausoleum. I would've wanted to check out the crypt too.
Haha Don, yes it's a must to take a peep
Very practical. The dead ones would have something to keep them "grounded" and have living company most days.
Mmmmm true
Ty you Sue for keeping these people's memory alive. In 2, 3 hundred years i hope someone like you finds my resting place.
Thanks, that's one of the reasons I started this channel
So glad to find you again. Beautiful cemetery.
Welcome back!
Hallo Sue. I cannot believe it. Thanks for the session ❤

I love to see the graveyards in Ireland. You are where my Mom was born, but in county Clonmel. Thankyou for giving me a glimpse of Ireland. Gayle xo in Whitby, On. Canada.

This is possibly the most well kept Graveyard…lovely if graveyards can possibly be beautiful this one is it. Thank you for bringing us here❤
Thank you for another interesting tour 💖
Glad you enjoyed it❤️
What a beautiful graveyard and setting :)
It is stunning there
I can’t believe they would use this beautiful mausoleum as a store room it makes me sad…
I know right and clearly it's not abandoned and what I read online it's like this awhile, so this is not recent 😞
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I got the weirdest feeling when you opened the gate door and all that workman’s items were in there just terribly sad…
Hey Sue 👋 Like so many times watching one of your vids I am looking past the cemetery to the beautiful scenery..wow stunning sending you hugs from London 🤗❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Maureen, the scenery here is unbelievable 👌
That is a shame about the mausoleum now a storage place.
It is for sure
What a beautiful place to visit loved ones that are at rest there. Want to think the air smelled fresh and crisp with wind blowing from mountains near by.❤
Thank you for taking us along for a look.🌟
Yes this is why I love Autumn, crisp fresh air, beautiful colours, unfortunately we've had so much rain lately, I think we've missed it 🥲
Omg I can’t believe that are using somebody’s resting place as storage.. I would be really tempted to say something. Great vid guys xxxx
Thanks Barb, ❤️
By hitting like it's for you Serenity Sue and your work you show us...
Not the way a crypt smelled or looked ..I could never hit like for that abuse of a deceased person

Hello from Utah, USA. love your videos!
Hey, thanks! ❤️
Dear Sue
We have The Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, TX where I grew up. My sister graduated from there. Catholic College.Lots of nuns from Ireland were here in South Texas, since it's prominently Catholic. My father was a Sheriff's Deputy and at Christmas many times one of the Nuns, who worked at the jail who was from Ireland came to our house. I enjoy your channel because My Dad was a Quigley and My Mother was a Hayes. My great grandfather told me he was from Dublin. When they came to the states they did not marry into Irish families. Which I was told during that time period was risque to do. Perhaps that's where I get my risque ways from. When I was a kid, not so much now. 😂😂😂. Lots of Irish in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and New York. All the way down in Texas. My Quigleys when they came to America were Coal miners. My Hayes people were fishermen and worked in rock quarries and built some beautiful churches here in the USA. I Love all the history you and Grave Visitations do. Appreciate your channel ❤
So many Quigleys in wexford and my mother was a Hayes before she married. That's some coincidence, WOW, I love when people like yourself give me information, we could be related 😳😍
There are quigleys in Sunderland too, one of which was a writer of novels about Sunderland
Great video Sue and thank you so much for sharing. What a beautiful cemetery and gorgeous river on the side.
Wasn't the area just beautiful Joel, I loved it
That's a little disrespectful, storing tools and the like in someone's Mausoleum 😮
It is, even if they are long gone, its no one else right to store stuff in it
Should report that discrasion to the owners of the cemetery, needs cleaned out
I've no idea who owns it but I'm sure the owners know exactly what's going on here
So they did it again. Used a beautiful mausoleum as a gardener's shed. What an absolute shame, but there is such a thing as karma. But the rest of the cemetery was beautiful with a river running through it. That was heaven! ♥️🙏
It was like heaven Janet so beautiful the mountains and river. Yes another mausoleum disrespected
Very disrespectful to use this beautiful mausoleum for a shed…so very sad!!! Love your videos Sue…keep up with the good work you do, always respectful+
bring interesting history of the individual!!! X❤️🙃
Thanks a million 😊
My gg grandfather came to America from Ireland in 1838 from county Derry! His name was Andrew Gillen! Ireland is such a beautiful place with the Churches, stones, greenery, etc! Know I'll never see it in person but it's on my bucket list!
Thanks Scott, I adore Ireland, I feel blessed 🙌
There was a funeral home that had bodies still inside after they’d closed!! Explorers found it, I believe.😮
Thank you Sue! Be well and stay away from that storm!!❤❤✌🏼💜PS: Did you all do Peter O’Toole’s already?
Thank you, so far just winds here, although we were flooded, thankfully it didn't come into the house
There has been more than one. So sad.
@yada-yadadragon1947 I think I seen on the news about that, how could a funeral home let that happen!!
Peter o'toole would be great❤
@annfahy2589 he was cremated and is in a safe deposit box at the Irish Presidential mansion in Dublin, until burial in Galway
Top number as usual sue, beautiful cemetery and scenery,as for the mausoleum ,there mightn’t be any descendants left to effect repairs sad that it should end up in this state ,maybe seal the lid of the chamber?anyway safe travels ,hope the floods have receded, god bless from us all in ballarat in Oz,👋👋🙏🙏👍🇦🇺
Thanks Peter, funny thing is I've seen mausoleums restored and protected, wonder how they choose what mausoleums to restore
@@SerenitySueGraveyards who knows, remember the McKenna mausoleum with the big hole in the wall don’t know if that ever got fixed,👋👋👍
What a glorious setting for such a beautiful graveyard.
What a shame about the mausoleum. It really would not take such a lot to restore it to how it was when it was built.
SO TERRIBLE about the priest who was executed for his religion and in such a truly BARBARIC way. I do wish that people would respect the religion of others who are not of their faith and let them live in peace.
I was MOST interested in the Sackville West grave. In the village of Withyham, East Sussex, England, which is in our part of the world , within the village church is a GLORIOUS tomb to a Sackville West. The tomb is to the thirteen year old son of an English knight of the 17th century. The son died in Italy and his parents had the tomb erected for him. It is all marble and cost about £300. An effigy of the son reclines above the tomb and on one side is the figure of his Father (in armour ) and on the other side a figure of his Mother and they both gaze lovingly , and sadly, at their son.
They say that when it rains outside the base of the tomb has the look of it being wet too although it is dry.
What I am getting to is do you think the Sackville in the grave in Ireland and the English Sackville's are of the same family ? Sorry for such a lengthy comment !
Edward Charles Sackville-West
13 November 1901
Cadogan Gardens, London, England, he was the 5th Baron, his parents were
Charles Sackville-West, 4th Baron Sackville and Maud Cecilia Bell. They really could be related
Very nice place and great views. Sorry this is too easy, the smell is just another rotten politician!
Chubba, only you could think of that line 😅😅

Love ur videos. I admire the fighting spirit of the Irish. They fought so well in the American Civil War. The Confederate Irish Brigade held down superior forces. Salute!

I love to see trees in a graveyard my mum and dad are buried next to a big tree in our local cemetery 😊 😊
It’s a long way to Tipperary!wow it’s stunning round there,I would love to get my paint brush out in that crypt, such a shame!
Oh me too, by the way, it is a long way to Tipperary lol
I love the secret hutch!
Me too, how neat is that
IT'S A VERY BEAUTIFUL GRAVEYARD BUT IT'S SO BAD THAT THEY USE A GRAVE FOR A STORE ROOM. IT'S TERRIBLE 😢😢
I agree with you
Hi again sue hope you're well and in good form today. These mountains are the Galtee mountains
Yes they are, I was told by a lady there they were the mcgillicuddy reeks 🤣
There is a street named McCarthy drive in Houston Texas, You never know that family might have been one of the founders of the Houston Texas city. I lived in the Houston area all my life of 62 years
That's so cool
What a beautiful and peacefull looking area. I would love to sit by that stream and try to catch a fish with no hook just to relax. Too bad the groundskeepers decided a shed cost too much and well they had an open mausoleum to use instead so why not. Shameful actually, it is possibly spilt gasoline and oil seeping down below mixing with the earth and rain making the stench.
Yes Reggie definitely musty with a mix of something I couldn't tell, I've been in too many mausoleums now to know after so many yrs there's generally no smell
Extremely disrespectful to use that crypt as a gardeners shed, I think a word needs being said in the ear of those responsible for the upkeep of that cemetery, it’s disgusting.
Thanks Sally x
A truly beautiful church yard, with an incredible setting, and, like you, I could put up a deckchair there and sit and look out for the whole day. Stunningly beautiful. But .... *What the dickens was that, on the windowsill, inside the Mausoleum* ? Stop the video at 4.30 for the best look at it. It looks like some sort of 'head', with eyes, nose and turned down mouth, complete with a pair of spectacles! If it's a 'sculpted' head - it's not one that you'd normally find inside a Mausoleum!
Did either of you notice it when you were inside? (although - the answer is probably not because the smell in there was cancelling out any of your other other senses. lol)
Really great video Sue. ~ Cobs (UK) x
Hi Cobs OMG, I see it so zoomed it, still not sure what it is, how very strange 🤔
That is disgusting! They should be ashamed of themselves. Using one’s final resting place as a storage shed. Another home run for the church!
Yes, unfortunately I've seen this now a few times on our channel
Thank you Juan, we don't but you are correct hardly any flowers, yes the warehouse in a mausoleum is disrespectful. I love the custom you have in Spain ❤️
When I visited cemeteries in England, I was really impressed to see headstones from the 900's etc... very old ones. There's so much history over there.
Thanks, Ireland has great history
I saw a sign that said “ grass cuttings” if you let cut grass sit it starts to rot and clump together and it stinks really awful! That is probably what you are smelly! 😖
Certainly wasn't grass, I was present and could smell rotten odour
Oh I know that smell, Dad used to keep grass and used it as compost but definitely wasn't grass
Beautiful place
Thanks Manuel ❤️
What a really nice location. Tipperary was one of the counties that we have visited and was in awe with the mountains and the scenery overall. So disrespectful that the mausoleum was turned into storage. The river next to it and the old bridge, adds to the allure of this location. Wondering if any of Ronald Reagan's relatives in this graveyard. Thanks for this vid!
Thanks Sonny ❤️
This graveyard is beautiful. It’s sad about that amazing mausoleum, it’s very disrespectful that it’s being used as a garden shed. If you ever go down underneath, I would love to see it; maybe the smell will clear out some if it ever dries out someday. Maybe in July or August
Thanks, oh I've a feeling this place is usually locked up
