- Today We are in Mount Jerome cemetery Dublin. A superb Victorian Cemetery With Vaults and monuments Dedicated To The Rich and Famous.
Mount Jerome Cemetery & Crematorium (Irish: Reilig Chnocán Iaróm) is situated in Harold's Cross on the south side of Dublin, Ireland. Since its foundation in 1836, it has witnessed over 300,000 burials. Originally an exclusively Protestant cemetery, Roman Catholics have also been buried there since the 1920s.
The name of the cemetery comes from an estate established there by the Reverend Stephen Jerome, who in 1639 was vicar of St. Kevin's Parish. At that time, Harold's Cross was part of St. Kevin's Parish. In the latter half of the 17th century, the land passed into the ownership of the Earl of Meath, who in turn leased plots to prominent Dublin families. A house, Mount Jerome House, was constructed in one of these plots, and leased to John Keogh. In 1834, after an aborted attempt to set up a cemetery in the Phoenix Park, the General Cemetery Company of Dublin bought the Mount Jerome property, "for establishing a general cemetery in the neighbourhood of the city of Dublin".
The first official burial happened on the 19th of September 1836. The buried deceased were the infant twins of Matthew Pollock.
The cemetery initially started with a landmass of 26 acres and grew to a size of 48 acres in 1874.
In 1984, burial numbers were falling, thus the Cemetery was losing revenue and began to deteriorate. A crematorium was needed to regain revenue and deal with plant overgrowth on the estate.
The Funerary Chapel in the cemetery was the first Puginian Gothic church in Dublin. It was designed by William Atkins.
In 2000, Mount Jerome Cemetery established its own crematorium on the site.

WOW...What a powerhouse of an episode, thanks for bringing us along! I wish the local stone masonry school would volunteer its students to tuck point some of these structures to ensure their continued well-being.
Hi Joe it would be a great idea. Thanks for watching and welcome if you are new here 👍
As part of a Historical Commission, we have been spraying and cleaning graves. D2 a biological cleans the stone. Some we gently remove lichen. I keep looking and trying to decide about cleaning. We are working to restore this cemetery to remember the founding father, and mother s of our community
Are they still burying in the area?
Take photo, D2, light spray, walk away. Come back in 30days repeat
@@marielailer4237 hi are you still part of the cleaning of this cemetery?
Brilliant walk though. I love snooping in vaults and crypts . You seriously need a endoscopic camera. Thanks GV and Sue. 🐨🥰
We have one but it's not great need to upgrade
Wow! You two find more remains than ever I did on archaeological digs. I appreciate all the care and dignity you show to those who have passed. Cee from the little haunted cottage in ireland 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀
What an exciting walk! The chain and skeleton. Thanks for taking us along.
Tiny houses are the big thing in New Zealand at the moment…some of those vaults would be around the same size. Imagine the cost of building one of those in todays times. Do you think some of those huge monuments were erected to show that the family had wealth…kind of a prestige type of thing. Appreciate you showing us around. Take care.
Bigger the better all about wealth and power even in death
Incredible visit! This walk really highlights the splendor of the Victorian era and their respect for their departed. Thanks GV, I always enjoy your visits.
Amazing coffins the details are superb 👍⚰️
What a great show, thank you GV find after find .....
This was a great cemetery tour!! I was waiting for it and am not disappointed 👏🏻👍🏻. You could spend a week in there. Fantastic. Thanks so much💕. ( I must add that at one point Sue was ahead of you at the end of that row of “ house type” mausoleums and I yelled OMG a ghost😂. Thanks Sue😂💕)

Stella thank you ❤️
Just fascinating. I have heard of people devising "rescue" bells for being buried alive, but that is the first time I have seen one!
Very cool. The entire cemetery walk was great. Looks like you’re still kind of warm there. Guess can’t expect much from caskets that old, but it is kind of sad it ends up that way one day. ❤
This was a fantastic video. OMG this is so fascinating. So much to see at once. I saw that there are a lot of comments with names I don't recognize. That is great. You are growing 💗💗💗
Hi Sylvia and margo ❤️👋
This was spectacular in every respect - the light, the clouds, the masonry, the monuments, and your wonderful presentation style. What an experience. Thank you, GV.

Excellent, GV.
Beautiful
Maybe the dog had his own coffin. They are big pups.❤️
Thank you 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 much love
Awesome episode ❤
enjoyed the tour, stunning grave sites, here, eastern Canada, it's only the oldest graves that have headstones anymore, just plaques on the ground now, required by the cemeteries for easy mowing
Looks interesting 🧐
Very interesting 😁
@@GraveVisitations you were so right! Very interesting 👏🏻👍🏻

We don't have any vaults you can see into here. Very interesting!
Love this!
BRILLIANT STATUS AND SCULPTURES WOW , REALLY NICE BIG C TAKE CARE BROTHER 👌
Cheers snowman 👍👍
The term "dead ringer" was coined because of this technique used as way of alarming the grounds keeper of a premature burial.
A real dead ringer for love ha
Brilliantly done . Frightened the cr"p out of me when I thought the skeleton moved but it was your shadow haha . Thank you for taking us along with you I wonder if the bell rings in the quiet of the night ? Really amazing footage .x
Caron I hope it didn't move lol I'd be worried. Thanks for watching
Sorry I missed your live, I had to go vote today.
I subscribed to your channel yesterday and have watched several of your videos today. I have noticed a "buzzing" noise off and on in your videos. I'm an empath and feel someone is trying to communicate with you in their own way. I think you stir their spirit somehow.
Thanks for subscribing, yes if you watch some of my videos I get alot of evps. Spirit voices in them
Well done as usual 👏🏼
Thanks John
THAT ONE MONUMENT LOOK TO BE OF A LION. NOT. A DRAGON. EITHER WAY SOME OF THE MONUMENT ARE A SIGHT. TO BEHOLD. THANK YOU FOR POSTING SUCH AWESOME VIDEOS. JERRY FROM ARKANSAS. YOU TWO ARE AWESOME. AGAIN THAT YOU FOR THE GREAT VIDEOS .
Love ur vids ❤
Thanks Shawn
That is so awesome
Thank you
So that's how we all end up. Very cool.
That's a neat design for a crypt.
Wow what a neat vault with the bell. Over time I wonder how many bells did ring back then of people that was buried alive.
If that bell was to ring with y'all standing there what would you do? 😂
😯that skull door! That's neat!
That almost looks like a bath tub lol. 😂 ❤ y'all thought so too.
Great video GV n Sue. ❤ a lot of amazing history here.
If that bell rang I would have had a viral video 😂
@@GraveVisitations 😆🤣 for sure!
Great find 💀
good stuff Cathal....🙌
Cheers mate
8:17 With the sun shining directly on the bones, the heat is higher and the humidity lower. This crypt must not give off strong odors despite appearances and the skeleton seems very well preserved and dry. The ideal would be to replace the bones in an ossuary so as not to expose them to the public in this ostentatious and disrespectful way.
There is an old victorian story called the fall of the house of usher and the subject of fear of being buried alive was mentioned.
Many Lawyers and Judges
Hello there. It's wonderful to be Irish isn't it? I'm new to your site and I plan on coming more
Hi Donna thanks for subscribing
Another cemetery I REALLY REALLY have to visit.
Well worth the visit amazing victorian funerary monuments
Wow👍
Wow almighty all the vaults wow
I do enjoy watching your videos, and the history, have you thought about getting a drain camera so you an access these tombs without the difficulty you clearly have getting good shots inside?
Don't like drain cameras o
Picture quality not the same. I like using phone. I've gotten great footage in previous videos without it
@@GraveVisitations oh you most definitely have! I think you do amazing considering. No hate meant dude, just a suggestion ☺️
@@Unangelic73 none taken 👍😁
Flaming heck bit spooky xxxx
Nice these are awsome videos, you need a snake camera to get right in there
Thanks I have one but these vaults were open enough to see. 😁
I should imagine no one would want to be buried while still alive.
It has happened back then. Taphophobia is the correct name
I have not received a notification in it seems months. I came here and my subscription had been removed. Anyway, I'm back and doing some catching up. Love from Alabama, USA
Tricia welcome back and sorry to hear about this. TH-cam it seems is acting up as usual 😕
Wow when you zoomed in on the skeleton!
Crazy isn't it
@GraveVisitations yh I certainly wasn't expecting that! Love your vids! Warmest regards to you and Sue from Stuttgart, Germany 🇩🇪
There used to be a custom where a family would tie a string to the hand of a loved one before they were buried. The strip was attached to a bell beside the grave in case the loved one hadn't actually died, but buried alive. Every night, villagers would take turns keeping watch over the graveyard all night, just in case a bell would ring. That is where the term "Graveyard Shift" came from.
And now, the rest of the story.
The bells weren't there to alert someone to rescue the buried. They were so superstitious, the ringing bell was warning that the person buried WAS A VAMPIRE, and it needed to be destroyed.
People were just so stupid back then!
Saved by the bell is where the term came from 🔔
@@GraveVisitations
Well, not really. Because, if by chance that bell did ring, it was dug up and they beheaded the person in the coffin. Because, they believed vampires were real, and that person was a vampire. So, nobody was ever saved by that bell.
@@Nacho-Mamma you don't get dug up in a vault. It's not under soil. Plus not everyone was classed as vampires. That's just an urban legend
It was common especially in Victorian days to have a bell or some sort of contact with the diseased as not a lot was known about comatose conditions which can mimic death so mostly well off people would pay for someone to check on the grave shortly after burial as a precaution .
Thanks John it all very interesting isn't it
Hi friend! 👋😷
Where is Dublin?
Thanks!
My god he is a chilling ❤Nicola
I believe this kinda work is noble, remember I those that are forgotten. Each had a unique story. I also believe this content is extremely important for the datafication of everything. I believe the metaverse is going to huge and cemeteries will offer unique experiences with AR/VR. Imagine going to an individuals grave and being able to experience the world that person lived. To the best of our ability to recreate the past with all known data etc. They'll be like fully submissive movies. The future is going to be wild and we're fastly approaching that time.
Yes that is mind-blowing to think but very educational. I like your outlook
@@GraveVisitations I hope you're one of those folks that can work to make it happen. Good luck and keep up the great work! Thank you!
I buried my first wife in that cemetary in 1929. Miss her so much..
It is sad to see open areas left to the elements. The angel a messenger of God to man a drape means sorrow
Who listens to bells ringing in cemetaries these days i hope she has her cell phone good cell service and do not drop the call either.
😂😂
Just curious, when there are skeletal remains in these vaults, is there a stench or odor?
Your videos are so interesting and informative!
Hi Kathleen didn't get any smell from this one
wonder would they still have keys for all the old doors
Good question Derek. I'd imagine all the family members are deceased now. They would have held the key
I always wonder if someone is buried inside of the stone “bathtub” and casket shaped things that are high up on the vaults/monuments.
No they aren't 😁
Big musalums at the time the stark reality of the difference between the rich and the poor at the time they are all Beautiful just the same
Question GV/Serenity Sue & our cemetery tour community; is the show most haunted still a thing now? They post nothing on their TH-cam channel except shorts. They did post a long form live @ Halloween but the drama is too much & gives me a headache. I used to LOVE ghost hunters, ghost adventures, most haunted etc all of them in the '90s & '00s on paid cable subscriptions with dvr that cost $$$'s until I cut the cord a long ago. However, the drama is literally sickening now to me (fake). I also do not like short videos on TH-cam, I know they are pushing short video content on creator's on TH-cam because of advertising revenue costs & short attention spans of geotargeted age groups. If I wanted to watch free short trash videos like what's on Tiki Tackie (disgusting/political crap) or (criminal, under age sexual content videos) for free I could but I don't & won't. No disrespect to those that do enjoy that content of course. But I pay for TH-cam & pay the cost of large streaming platforms for commercial free long form video by independent creators (20 plus minutes of content on TH-cam). Why do I pay for TH-cam, because I enjoy those folk's like GV/Serenity Sue that do that content that I enjoy. 😀
Hi I watched the Halloween live but I find that group boring. I do like ghost hunters International tho
What is the wooden coffin carrier called?
A bier
