It feels like I'm an apprentice in your shop. It's such a well-explained process for us novices. Thanks for putting in all your efforts and making the episodes valuable.
This has to be the best channel for fiberglass work out there. Very thorough and your attention to detail is amazing. I love the format of your videos, they are great reference material. You are a great teacher. Because of you I have learned more about fiberglass products and have completed some of my own fiberglass repairs on my boat. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos. It is very much appreciated.
Best most professional boat building repair channel out there. I am going to be working on restoring an old 78 BWhaler Squall. Have lots of info on how to go about it. Thanks keep up the good work!
HEY JOE, IT IS A BLESSING TO FINE FINE CRAFTSMEN ON YOU TUBE, AND YOU SURE ARE ONE OF THE BEST! GREAT ENERGY. TECHNIQUES, DEMONSTRATIONS, AND INSTRUCTIONAL EXPERTISE. YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST, THANKS FOR YOU EFFORTS!
Enjoying this series. When I see you stirring and scraping the 1 quart container with a painting stick, I wish you could hear me saying to get a rubber scraper from the kitchen. Haha.
Thanks, Joe. i really enjoy your videos. you're a cool respectful down-to-earth guy with a ton of practical knowledge. I appreciate that you seem to video exactly the way you would do things without being videoed. For me that is part of your appeal. Reality is everything 👍
If my college classes had been this engaging I would have gone on to medical school. LOL Seriously, the best tutorial on YT. Have you considered a DVD or digital file series?
Plug's looking good. Good old surface prep consists of three main steps: sanding, sanding and more sanding. I like the Evercoat putties, they're easy to use for us DIY'ers. Thanks for the great video.
Such an interesting set videos. You ask for ideas… how about swim platforms…wood ones and glass ones. Our 38 DC Egg Harbor has a swim platform that is getting weak and needs a new one. I have worked with fiberglass for many years. My hobby is vintage snowmobiles. Most hoods are glass. Therefore these videos are very interesting. After watching these, I think I might e interested in a swim platform project.
Very cool, the Egg Harbors are great boats! It sounds like your previous experience with fiberglass, coupled with what you are learning on the channel, would put you well on your way if you did decide to build a new swim platform. I wish you all the best and I appreciate you watching!
Your thorough and complete educator. I’ve winged through some small repairs and projects on my own vessels, always fair at best.My confidence level has been increased 100%.Your videos will be a good reference if & when I ever take on a project.
I am new to your channel, just subscribed yesterday. I just watched your entire boat building playlist in 2 days. I am starting to build a trimaran here in the Philippines next year and stuff like you are showing helps me a lot.
Brings back some not so fond memories of late night spraying in a open shop and the flying insects attracted in by shop lights and finding the newly sprayed surface 🤪
Yep, that's the worst! I don't know for sure what they were, but it was about 1000 of them! Shut me down for the night, that's for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting!
You're doing a great job. I'm just enjoying watching your videos. Having done some glass work and built a couple of small moulds, I can appreciate everything you are doing. I know know one thing: you're never to old to learn. 😊
Thanks so much! That's very cool that you have some experience in this area, most people don't know much about it at all. Happy to share with you all out there watching!
Love your channel, also am building a 24 ft boat but kind of cheating as in buying a salvage boat ripping out the interior to expose all the fiberglass to make a mold for the new boat as in I'm a diy guy but have no clue how to make it aerodynamic when going through the water, i constantly go back and view the same videos trying to get the info i need so far, i think clean, sand, fill in with bulk filler then glaze correct process or ??
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the mold building series! Yes, those are the basics. I tried to make this a very thorough and in depth mold building tutorial, so I hope it helps!
Thanks for the last couple of videos you've done, they answered a couple of questions about fiberglass repairs and different resins. I'm not new to fiberglass and plastic repair on cars but could never get good answers from any of my vendors and product reps. ( Including my 3-M guys) Thanks Joe !
Just found your channel this morning and have been binging since it's raining here today. Great show you have!! Was watching the previous video and this popped up now. Timing is everything. Thanks for the videos I have my note pad out as I'm about to start fixing up my first boat now!
It's the same principle, just a different shape. Once you have the overall concept, you could build almost any shape you want! Thanks for watching and commenting!
One thing you could do a video on is all the various sanding discs there are out there and the type of pads that go with which ones, the types of adapters to use with the electric grinder. This was much more of an aggravation to me than I ever imagined when I started and I purchased a lot of things that just didn't work very well. The 36 grit small disc on the electric grinder are my workhorse now when I have a lot of material to cut.
Thanks for the suggestion! I agree with you on the small high speed grinder with a 36 or 24 grit disc. They are hard to beat when it comes to rapid material removal. I call them your boatbuilders friend! Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience . I need all the help I can get for my own diy project. I'm in ft myers fl so I also have to deal with heat and humidity and bugs. Thank you.😊
Capt Joe Fish bump family every video keeps us coming back learning so much appreciate y'all your time is so valuable to me and I am all to familiar with yellow flies in the low country of SC they will find you and leave you with their lasting impression ,Lol
Glad that you are enjoying the videos and that you are finding them informative! Didn't know you had those yellow flies in SC. They make it miserable for us this time of year, then you try to paint and the love bugs come out! I tell people we have a different bug for every month of the year down here Thank you for Watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
I am enjoying your channel. I have breathed enough fiberglass sanding dust over the years! I am happy that the dust stays in your shop now and can't pass across through my screen! 😂 I a new subscriber...
Thank you very much! The working time is alot like gelcoat. I try to have it out of the paint gun in 10 minutes or so. Clean the equipment, and load the next batch. Of course it can vary based on catalyst ratios and air Temps. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!
Another very nicely done and informative video. Thank you. Question: Is there a particular reason you chose not to add reinforcing ridges to your plug? Obviously more work, but could add some lengthwise stiffness to the final top. BTW, I am completely astounded at how clean you keep your clothing!
Thank you very much! That's a good question. This design is surprisingly rigid as it is. I have built other plugs and patterns like this in the past and knew it would work just fine for this application. I try to show what works for me, but always encourage you all to add or improve where you have a thought or idea to make something your own. Haha, I get the clean clothes thing a lot! I guess the more you do it, the easier it gets to keep clean!I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Do you have any footage of how you make and design the bottom of the hull to make the mold for your 29ft I would like to see how you design it ty and you're amazing how you explained how to do stuff the proper way ty very much
Sorry, I don't have any videos of the early phases of the boat build. I may do a video in the future explaining the process, though. Thanks for watching!
Hey, just found your channel and like it. Like the scotch brite and acetone trick. As an amatuer hobbyist i (just always ragged with acetone). Also dont have a big compressor either. Wan to tell you about a tool option i found to be perfect for this type of work. The 7 inch polisher/sander from harbor freight called warrior. 650 to 3500 rpm pressure sensitive variable rpm non orbiting with 7 inch foam stick it velcro pad (also use the 5 inch too) Fiberglass dust burned out my 12 thousand rpm grinder one day and grabbed the warrior as the last act of desperation. I'll never buy or use a 4 inch angle grinder ever. The warrior sands great and is very forgiving. with a wool pad if buffs awesome, with a cut off wheel it slices thru fiberglass, wood, steel, aluminum like butter and doesnt grab yank twist and explode cut off wheels like the 12000 rpm 4 inch does. The pressure sensitive feature lets you get surgical, get inthere and lean on it and the motor torques like hell to the rpm you set it for. Inexpensive and worth a try, bet you like it. Great how to make mold series, thanks ! Oh yeah the love bugs only come out when spraying coatings paint and especially gel coat
Welcome to the channel! Thanks for the suggestion on the variable speed grinder/ buffer, I will have to check that one out. I have a Bosch grinder that sounds very simular to what you are describing, but always looking for good options! The high speed grinders can take some getting used to for sure, and may not be the best tool for everyone. Haha, yep! The dreaded love bug!! They have messed up many a gelcoat job. Thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
Great video! Could a peel ply be used to gain a smoother surface finish, therefore less sanding required, or is that not possible with these polyester based products? Really looking forward to the rest of this project 😊
Glad you are enjoying the videos! Yes, peel ply could be used in some of these applications. I will try to add some peel ply content into our videos soon for everyone. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hello Joe Im not sure but bosch make some White sandpaper for paint, i can’t say for the polyester but the name is paint paper it’s White and when sanding paint and varnish it do not stuff the paper like that, if you Can find it in the States you should try it.😉 Again thanks for your great teaching videos👍👍👍 Best regards from Denmark Thomas Thomsen
I have a fish box on my boat that needs insulation. What would be the best material to use for insulation and how should I fiberglass and finish it? Would like to see a video on this. I can’t find a good one on TH-cam.
What's the rationale for making a mold. Is it to make the final product lighter or so more so you can reproduce the process for multiples of the ssme plug? Love the content btw!
Generally a molded part is a higher quality part. And yes, it also makes building more pieces of the same part much easier and faster. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Love the videos. I know you said you get a lot of questions about the foam. Can you point us in the right direction for purchase? Currently planning/designing a fish box and haven’t found a foam that doesn’t melt from the resin heat
I get our 2 pound density foam from one of our local fiberglass suppliers. I know that it is difficult to ship this particular type of foam, so it is hard to find online. Thanks for watching
I am not sure if that will work or not. I do know that the orca primers that we used in the video are designed specifically for building molds. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Curious, would you say you use the "tackier/gummy" resin on stuff that will be getting another coat or a final fiber-glassing over it or why would you use that? Sandpaper is not cheap but I'm asking b/c I just came upon 4 tubes like are used for flotation on a houseboat. Since I'm on a large lake(7th largest manmade lake) your show came into my feed at the right time. I might find myself building a houseboat. Nothing fabulous but livable, perhaps? Anyhoo, This is my "fiberglass" school , ty Teacher
Yes, we always use laminating resin, which stays tacky if we are going to be adding more layers. If we wanted to sand or finish a area we would add some wax additive to the last coat of just plain resin or gelcoat to help it cure tack free. I hope this helps, and best of luck with your houseboat project!
Joe, you used both the tooling and laminating resin. If I understand correctly both are laminating, i.e. don’t fully cure when exposed to air, so what is the difference and where would you one over the other. Thank you for your channel.
ISO resin is stronger. But many times, ortho resin is strong enough. Ortho resins do shrink, whereas ISO resin doesn't. That is the main reason to use ISO.
Some glazing putties are better than others. Many people think of the one part putty, that comes in a squeeze tube. I don't personally use that on anything in our shop. The evercoat 2 part putty on the other hand is a good material. And remember that the part we are building is just the pattern for the mold, and will be a one time use, and will never be exposed to the elements. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
we have a similar fly here in Rye Australia called a Marsh or March fly, you somehow dismiss the pain until you realise you're being bitten then smack them dead just like you did
You can add more wax, but I would recommend not adding more than 1 to 2 percent to gelcoat that already has wax added. That would be 10 to 20 CCs per quart. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Only problem i have with you is that you make things look too easy. Just kidding, your experience shows even in the simplest of tasks.
It feels like I'm an apprentice in your shop. It's such a well-explained process for us novices. Thanks for putting in all your efforts and making the episodes valuable.

a houseboat. Since I'm on a large lake(7th largest manmade lake) your show came into my feed at the right time. I might find
myself building a houseboat.
@@FishBumpTV thanks & there's so many different products that I'm confused right now but I've got time before spending
money. I'll be taking notes
if i add wax to a laminating resin that stays tacky, can i sand it? or will it still gum the sanding paper?
One of the many things I learnt is that yes after catalysing you need to get a move on, but you don’t need to panic 😄
Yep, that's it!
Where do you buy those sander from? The 3 blades one
We have a link below the videos description for those airtools. Thanks for watching
@@FishBumpTV thank you so much🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Cool
Thanks! I appreciate you watching
Thank you for your response.
If you will put a shop rag in between your hand and your sanding surface it will show you any inperfections
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
How many times can you use a mold ???
Potentially hundreds of times is you maintain it well. Thanks for watching
i'm not a big glazing putty fan, it seems to keep shrinking with time and can be very noticeable after some time has past.
How many of of those Columbia shirts do you own lol
Haha, a Bunch!!
we have a similar fly here in Rye Australia called a Marsh or March fly, you somehow dismiss the pain until you realise you're being bitten then smack them dead just like you did
Oh man! Those biting flies are the worst, especially when you are trying to shoot a video! Thanks for watching all the way from Australia 🇦🇺
I have a question getting ready to do some gel coating in about a month with wax will it hurt to add extra wax additive to it
You can add more wax, but I would recommend not adding more than 1 to 2 percent to gelcoat that already has wax added. That would be 10 to 20 CCs per quart. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@FishBumpTV awesome thank you I was wondering about that
😎
Thanks for watching!
👍👍👍
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Only problem i have with you is that you make things look too easy. Just kidding, your experience shows even in the simplest of tasks.
Haha, glad you are enjoying the videos! I will try to make it look a little more difficult in the next videos! Thanks for watching
Always practice the 7P’s with any project

You missed your calling should have taught high school shop.
Haha, I hear ya! Glad you are enjoying the channel!
What grit paper did you use to final sand the sanding primer? .. Bugs seam to love landing on wet paints and primers.🦟🪰
I did a knock down with 80 grit, then finished with 120. The surface primer flowed out really nice over the 120. Thanks for watching!
