Aftermarket Batteries In Old Cordless Tools??

My Makita power tool batteries have died, what are the options available now?. Buy a whole new tool, Buy a new expensive OEM battery or buy a cheap aftermarket battery?

OEM batteries are ridiculously expensive, particularly as a ratio of the power tools cost. Good point you made!

Glad to see this video come out. I've got an old Dewalt 18v drill that I bought new not too long after they hit market. I've been wondering about replacement batteries, I'm on the second set I bought quite a while ago. Know they are getting close to the end of their usefulness and don't really want to go spend a bunch to buy new tools when these are still working great.

I bought two 18v batteries for Dewalt from Vanon they are crap do not fit Dewalt charger properly had to fight tooth and nail to get refund they kept asking questions as if it was my fault since then I see they make their own charger could be that is the answer hope you have better luck than me.

Hi there, again a good and informative video.
I have two elder Bosch drills, one 12 Volt and another 14,4 Volt fom witch the batteries are death. It is good tip to look for some of the after market batteries. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this video, have a right angle dewalt 12 volt with dead battery. Hardly use it but a great tool when needed. Just bought a new battery for under 20 bucks.. new life

Brushed Makita tools are also pretty strong. Don't throw away the old Makita batteries. Someone could use them to rebuild ✌️

Thanks for the info Tommy, Are there any issues with the charger now you're using a different chemistry make up in the replacement batteries or do they just work? I seem to remember that when the world changed from NiCd to NiMH batteries there were some initial issues with chargers not working or fears of fire risks or something like that but I know that more modern chargers can handle both battery types ok.

The standard makita charger is suitable for both NiCd and NiMH it states on the charger. As with any rechargeable batteries there is a risk of overheating and possibly fire so I'd never leave batteries charging when I'm not in the workshop and never overnight.

I’ve only 1 OEM battery left. Think I only ever had 2. 6 Aftermarket batteries going strong. When you can get 2 x 5Ah batteries for €55 or 1 OEM 5Ah for €98, it’s kind of a no brainer. Actually have a pair of Vanons.
I have a dozen woodworking / construction tools & a strimmer & a hedge trimmer all on the same battery platform. DIY use only, but never a bother with them in 5/6 years & plenty of power & longevity still.
One thing. Don’t buy aftermarket battery chargers. One ruined an OEM battery on me. Better off with the slow chargers on the AM batteries.

Hello Tommy great insight into your thinking and logic behind your decision. I was just wondering if you have any thoughts on the possibility of getting a new tool as body only and using it with aftermarket batteries. It is something I considered before but could never talk myself into it. John

Hi John, it is something that did cross my mind body only tools are somewhat reasonably priced its the batteries that are a bigger cost. I might look into it in the future 👍
