I'm with others who replace the stock filter with a K&N but the clear cover from S&B is an outstanding engineering feature. Anytime you can "see" the status of a part that could require maintenance is a good thing.
Replacing the OEM filter is definitely the smartest move. The clear box is a nice feature though!
Have owned a Airaid filter charger kit( with reusable filter) for over 9 years , had it on my 09 ram then moved to my 2012 ( same kit )on 5.7L gasser, In the 9 years cleaned it about 3 times. Total mileage on the kit 65k miles. I have never done a mileage comparison but your numbers Mike are impressive.

I just installed this on my 17 Chevy 2500 6.0. left the plug out. Gosh damn did it make a difference! The key is you need to upgrade the exhaust otherwise it's sucking more in with congestion. I have an 18 inch glass pack, and with he new intake it sounds even louder/throatier/aggressive. And man it pulls and is a bit quicker. I followed the instructions and left battery unhooked for two hours to allow CPU reset.
Intake, exhaust system, with custom tune of your fuel air system.
The reason an intake and exhaust system make more power and increase fuel efficiency, is because the more cooler air and volume of air you can bring in to the system. The better the system will respond and work.
So you install a cold air intake, but your exhaust is still stock. You are resulting in a little back pressure most likely on the exhaust side.
The trick is to get the larger volume of cooler air out quicker now, so you need to open up the exhaust with bigger diameter headers and a high flow CAT with bigger exhaust tubing. But each case varies. Most restrictive exhaust part is the header, or CAT.
Once all the bolt on parts are on, time to tune the computer to use the extra cooler air.
That’s when you will see and notice actual gains.
If your not up for all that stuff, stock is still a good option, but yeah, the cold air intake does have a nice sound.

Blablabla Your description of how an engine works is wrong. Sounds good in theory however. Whoever told you this information more than likely was a Sales pitch to purchase an Aftermarket intake system.
The fact of the matter is the Mass air flow sensor senses the Volume & Temperature of air. The colder the air the more dense it is meaning the more gas is needed, power is increased but unfortunately not Mpg. This is why Winter Mpg is not as great as Summer Mpg. In the Winter an engine has more power because the air is more dense. If manual calculated Mpg has increased it's running lean.
As far as an exhaust is concerned on Modern fuel injected engines a high flow muffler will do nothing but cause the oxygen sensor to run cooler which again burns more fuel. If at any fuel is saved it's because the computers parameters cannot register the intake and exhaust accurately.
Meaning the engine is running lean, in other words the engine is sucking in more air than the factory air OEM system but the computer isn't accurately registering it to add sufficient fuel to match the increased Volume and/or Density of the air. Long term resulting in wear of the upper compression ring.
Air (has ) to be matched by fuel to run reliably. There's no way around it besides running the engine lean, which will feel more powerful.
The stock intake system on this particular truck may look like a mess of over complicated engineering but it has a purpose. It's the absolute most efficient design. Meaning there's no aerodynamic drag in the system itself. Noise is drag in aerodynamics.
An aftermarket intake has no Helmholtz resonators that's why they're more noisy/throaty sounding, again noise is drag, drag is inefficient.
I assure you if you want the absolute most reliable power just from an intake. Buy a K&N air filter & sheet of adhesive heat wrap and wrap the outside of stock OEM air box. You'll have more power than ANY aftermarket intake system on the market, you'll also burn more gas than any intake on the market, especially in the Winter.
Aftermarket bolt on parts such as cold air intakes and exhaust systems dont do much without custom tuning the engine computer. Will be interesting to hear what your experiences will be !
You are exactly right!!!! That truck is only going to do what the computer allows it to do. All that bolt on crap does nothing to todays trucks unless the are professionally tuned. One of the guys from Black Bear performance met me in San Antonio and rode with me with his lap top connected to my 2011 silverado 5.3 computer. I told him to remove all torque management, raise the governor to 120 mph, tune the motor for 89 octane gas, and I want it to shift hard. It will now lay rubber like a motherfucker and bark the tires when it hits second gear and sometimes even third and have taken it over 105 mph many times. The only other thing I had done was a Flowmaster muffler with duel outlets. I don't feel I need to do anything else.

TLDR version:
22,500 miles to pay off $300 @ 1 mpg increase.
So for most of us the cold air intake would pay for itself in a year or two. Less, if you are an ex-trucker with an awesome wife and 2 awesome dogs. Congrats on the 10K subs.

I rounded off the mileage increase to 1.0 mile per gallon. Rounded off the mpg to 15. Figured cost of gas @ $3.00 per gallon. So, if your price of gas is more than $3, then the miles to break even decreases, since your price per mile traveled is higher.
So the question is:
How many miles driven to save $300.00 at a 1 mpg increase.
$3.00 /gal = 15 mpg
$3.00 divided by 15 = 0.2 which is 20 cents per mile.
Your cost for 1 mile = 20 cents.
$300.00 of gas divided by 0.2 = 1500 gallons
1500 gallons X 15 miles per gallon = 22,500 miles
22,550 miles = $300.00 saved per 1 mpg increase.
Back in the 60’s & 70’s we just turned the air cleaner top over. LOL. If nothing else, the clear box cover looks cool!

I have the same one I get 1.5-2.0 mpg better use to average 11.1 now I’m around 12.5-13.3. Made my throttle response much better and has a nice sound. It’s expensive but quality made and tested. I had same one on 5.3 liked it. It cleans up your engine bay and looks very nice.
It was a nice kit, pricey but we did see a little mpg gains.
When I was a teenager I used to flip the top of the air filter cover upside down to get that "throaty" sound when the 4 barrel opened up, which was pretty often!
I saw where you have almost 40k miles on that truck, it seems like you just bought it a few months ago.

Higher gains are more noted, if the exhaust and computer tuning is done to match. The intake by itself is negligible. In order to "notice" any change in power, the gains must be in excess of 10%.
I wonder if just replacing the filter for a free flowing one would be just as good. Nice video.
That would probably be the most cost effective solution
Some of those compartments on the stock ducting is for water separation. Just be aware that the tires and radiator fan spray water all over. You may suck water into your engine with that new setup.
That’s sounds amazing! I just ordered one. For my 2019 Chevy HD gasser and was considering some after market exhaust on my truck as well. I’m not trying to make it fast just love that v8 purr. It’s contagious for sure, especially if you’ve had a few that sound really good in the past

intakes are meant to flow more air but if your truck doesnt need the more airflow which anything stock wont need, its pointless. they are a supporting mod for something like forced induction or a built motor and require custome ecm tuning to take full advantage of. When you increase the airflow you also have to increase fuel to keep the mixture correct as well so if you tune the ecm to take advantage of it power wise then you probably are gonna lose fuel mileage
I put a K & N system on my 8.1L. You are right, not much improvement, except when I came a long hill, the larger air system let the engine breath better and I found the pulling power increased. I, like you enjoy the sound. Don't really think there is anything I can do to increase the fuel mileage with the 8.1L, except park it... lol With the engine breathing better on those hills, I think it had a positive impact on the engine temp.
1 mpg is pretty good actually. I agree with you about using a dry filter. Seems like everybody is sold on K&N filters. I have always believed that they are not as good as a dry filter because when they get dirty you will never get 100% of the dirt washed out so it looses efficiency. I would rather replace a dirty filter with a brand new disposable filter.
We were surprised to see any improvement in mpg!

I think a lot of people are still worried about the price tag of a diesel them to worry about emissions on top of that, they're giving more attention to the gas side
I don't think the cold air kits are worth the extra cash.I'm going to do what I've always done. I'm going to replace the factory cleaner with a K&N filter and be done with it.

@@davidm2645 it is a better flowing air filter. It is also a reusable filter.depending on how dusty/dirty your are you travel in,you can go a long time between cleaning/recharging the filter.
We just upgraded from a Ram 1500 to a Ram 2500.i will be upgrading the filter to a K&N soon.
A good computer tune, cold intake and a good quality exhaust will yield fuel savings and better power. I have done it on both my sports cars and my F-250 and what a improvement... Good luck and enjoy...

I got the same one from my 2008 2500 6.0 and I had to return it but the company was nice enough to rebuild me supposedly a custom box so would fit better and it did so I take my hats off to them for doing that still fits a little somewhat awkward but looks nice performance I have not put my muffler yet once I do that I'll get a tune and see what my gas mileage and everything comes out to but I will get a 3in rough country lift kit with upper control arm shocks and all that good stuff but thanks for your video

from what i understand the air intake kit doesn't do anything unless you put an aftermarket exhaust on the truck. The whole hype is a cold air intake will make the truck breath better, well if it can't release the air any better than what's the point. If you are trying to get a few more mpg's look into a flo pro exhaust system. from what i have been told they are a little louder but not bad. good luck!
Our results showed just the air intake did do something. I'm sure it would be greater with other mods but this was supposed to just see what, if anything a cold air intake might do.
Should help keep the cool when towing in the summer time. I want one just for the sound to go with my Flowmaster 50 series big block muffler😉
If it ever gets to be summer here, we will be able to report it it helps keep it cool or not😂 it should sound really good with that muffler!
I installed an air raid on my 2014 GMC with a 5.3 L I also installed a Flowmaster Cat-Back dual-exhaust I can't verify any fuel mileage gains but I definitely feel I have more torque on the top end for pulling my RV.
I have a cold air intake on my pickup. Didn't notice a major gain till i change muffler,air and spark plugs.
Not sure if we'll do they other mods... We've been down that road many times with other vehicles haha
Not a big fan of the oiled filters either (cough cough k&n). Needless to say my engine light is on for my maf sensor due to the fact of me putting an oiled filter in on my set up. I researched the best for set up for the gmt-800 platform (99-07 classic gm trucks, mines a 2003), and everyone mentioned the airaid MIT, which uses the factory box and replaces the tube going to the throttle body. I didn't notice much of an increase at all, but my truck feels a little more responsive now. A lot of people also recommend getting a tune to get the full benefits of a CAI. I posted to your fb page about my set up as well and I figured I'd comment on here for the people that don't have facebook.

Good assessments. You described making the engine(pump) pump better. They should describe them as flow enhancers vs a cold air intake. I haven’t seen one study that compares temp ambient inflow temp vs throttle body temp. I guess we could say it looks cooler vs stock and has some noise lol. Thanks for ur review.

Just installed Volant intake on my frontier. Gave me 18 more horsepower and made a huge difference. Gotta do your research on witch brand and types actually help performance.
I loved that red dually you had , I have a 2002 f 350 7.3 4 door long wheelbase ford dually , but I liked that red truck you had , that truck would be easier to get around in for sure , and pull like a bull I bet.
We still miss the red dually to this day! It was an awesome truck but with a regular cab and big dogs it didn't workout

Mike, that's gonna make that 6.0 get up to 25 mpg, 19 towing, plus, you'll have to hold off the accelerator going up the Eisenhower Tunnel hill in Colorado. Nah, it ain't worth it.

Now winter time when I let my truck idle alot to warm up, 14, 14.5mpg, of course winter time is when you're going to get your worse mpg mileage anyways. But summer time 15 to 16mpg all the time. If I did nothing but under 55 mph I'd see 17 to 18mpg. It's when I get up over 65 mph more often do I see it go back to 15 mpg in the summer. Best average I got on a 200 miles trip was 19mpg. Maybe I got lucky I don't know, I think it's the tires they put on it, the 245/75/17. Which look to small for the truck but I thinks it's what's giving me the great mpg.
I would agree with the cost benefit analysis & sound. I’m shocked you got better mpg’s at all. In history I’ve had cold air intake and noticed more sound but zero mpg’s difference . My newer trucks are all programed for the stock equipment and I’m not sure what a cold air would do to the “systems & sensors"…. may run worse? Most tests I’ve seen show little to no improvements though.
I didn't think I'd see anything either. I'm going to continue to monitor the fuel economy and update later. So far I haven't had any engine lights or loss of power.

With the computers it can be a gamble to mess with after market gimmicks. Best to stick with OEM. 300$ is a rip for an air filter.
It sounds like 15 more hp. Lol, did you disconect the battery to reset the computer? I did that with mine, I don't know if it matters.
Disconnected the battery before I even started pulling the factory air box.
I'm curious does your 6.0 have the flex fuel (E85) option or just straight gas? I have a Flex 6.0 Sierra 2015, I put my S&B in today, I also have a 40 series Flowmaster on the back. I'm curious is the E85 do to being majority Ethanol, causing the engine to run cooler and has proven to add a small amout of HP combining both would be interesting.

Well I hope you got something out of it for your money. If you don’t gain anything I’d send it back. Looks pretty much the same as what you took out. You were right about the box on the original intake. They are resonators. Usually used now to quiet the tapping noise of the electronic lifters and add a more throaty sound. My Tacoma has same thing. You don’t realize what they do till you take them off and drive. Lol
It sounds perfectly stock until you get on it but it's certainly not bad sounding, luckily haha we will see how it sounds while towing
Cai intake alone doesnt do much plus you got the dry filter should of went with the oiled cleanable filter which a friend has it on a 2009 silverado compared to stock it felt different better throttle response like a bit more power mine also has it but paired with other bolt ons and custom tune done by a professional outcome is great
I've just never been a fan of oiled filers, just a personal preference. Either way, it's not much of an improvement for the amount of money, just my opinion.
More air in.... Now for a cat back exhaust to get that extra air out easier.. Lol. It's a viscous cycle... Never ends...

I can agree with that an exhaust will let more air out. A K&N air filter might let more air in, but at what cost? If a filter let's more air in, might it let more dirt in? I'm not buying it.
Not a big fan of “cold” air intake kits. That looks like a nice setup.
I went with just the AEM in my 3.5 ECobeast. Particularly because it's dry also. I've heard the oil filters mess with the sensors. That looks to be an outstanding kit though, and considering the construction totally worth the $300. Heck in two years you can sell it b4 trade in. I about guessed the MPG gain. I'm wondering the noise level under load though. The sound effect is fun. And yea I think the skin tabs on that stock intake are noise reduction. LOL. On the Ford though, that sensitive little beach, we have got to disconnect the battery for like 30 minutes so it can relearn the flow of air change in the computer. Totally cool you can see the filter. + totally cool your wife is into mods too. Watched while waiting for a damm REGEN on my deisel. And I got a poor DEF quality derate message. SMH.
The instructions on the S&B said to disconnect the battery before installation because of the maf sensor. Lynn used to drag race a ram 2500 5.9 Cummins that we modified a little bit. It was running 10's 😉
My 2016 ram used to get those def messages all the time.

My truck didn't take a cold air intake well threw the computer all out of wack and first start up in idle it was revving up and down by itself. Turned it off waited a couple of minutes, turned it back on and it started up for a few seconds then completely died.
Never heard of that before
I needed more horse power so I bought a new truck with more horsepower. It worked!
All kidding aside, unless one is going to change the fuel delivery/flow, exhaust flow and intake flow...along with some computer tuning/flashing, you are not going to realize any significant gains.
Yeah this was more of a test. Can just the air intake change help? Surprised us to see any positive change in mpg!

David Lavery I believe the stock size is 265/70/17. The 245's will appear to give you better mileage because it registers a Mile sooner. A smaller tire spins more to cover a mile
@@Mr.Beastforpresident it's on the door too 245/75/17 so it's the stock size that it's supposed to have so it's calibrated for that tire size. Plus I do the math manually to and get the same mileage. But it having those tires, and I'm not a led foot. Plus I'm at 6500 ft elevation, so less air equals less gas used, gives me that mileage.

My 2008 has 16's with 3:73's & my 2011 I literally just bought Friday has 17's with 4:10's with 265/70/17 but they may not be factory size. Both are Crew Cab long beds, not sure if that matters. They are 2wd. And may have the Z85 pkg. But I think all 2500's come factory with the Z85 pkg.
@@Mr.Beastforpresident mines a 2018, they don't come with 16" tires anymore. And mine has 4:10 gearing as well. But it's definitely 245/75/17 say on the tire and on the door. It's that forged aluminum rim that's not the prettiest but a step up from the steel WT rim, but not as nice as the 18" or 20" rims they come with.
I'm thinking the only way your really going to ring out if it's worth it or notice to get some towing miles with it. You should try it both ways with that plug in and out see what kind of numbers you get both ways. Was that plug in or out when you were testing?

Definitely very noisy, I removed mine and returned it the next day. Noise is unbearable in the cab under heavy load. Only had on truck 1 day.

Cool the air and you will get more and better mpg & power. Thats a fact.. The problem with most people is there thinking I have 300hp and I want 500 hp... Nope.. you can get it but your going to have to change and tune to get that..

We traded this truck awhile back but it did great up until then. Didn't notice much different besides it making the engine louder and slightly better fuel mileage. Not sure if it's worth it for the pricetag but that's up to you
BTW...speaking of fuel mileage. Did you see any fuel mileage change with the addition of the bed cap? Thinking of getting one for my truck. Thanks in advance.
Maybe just a slight decrease due to the weight.
@@WanderingWagners Interesting.....Would have thought the bed cap would have decreased the wind resistance some on the front of the trailer by causing the wind to go up and over the top of the trailer instead of hitting more directly on the front. Just shows how much I know about aerodynamics.
Has dealership mentioned any warrantee issues with doing this, I know alot of people have been installing catch cans because of the direct injection. I think there is an article of a corvette owner losing engine warrantee over having a catch can. Just curious
Well as of now they don't know about it. My truck hasn't been back to the dealer since I got it. Luckily it's easy to switch back to the stock air box if needed.
Any thoughts on installing a catch can? I want to and the videos are very good on it.
I don't think it's as big of a deal on the 6.0 as it is on the 5.3. can't hurt though.

Dude. This guy obviously doesn't know his truck very well. I don't understand how people don't feel the difference in their throttle response. I've owned and installed 2 CAI now on separate vehicles and made a huge difference on both
For the cost and the minimal gains we didn't find it that impressive is what we are saying. Spend your money however you wish.

No. Same displacement but this is a gas engine. The Ford 6.0 is diesel.

The oils can get sucked in where they shouldn't be. Just personal preference too use dry.

Our trailer only weighs 8,000 lbs, the gas Silverado 2500 we own pulls it no problem.

We have had ours since December 2017 and just hit 52,000 miles. It's been a fantastic truck.

I'm in the same boat. I can't stand the look of the 20 models. But I want that new 6.6 gas engine! Maybe the new look will grow on me.

Well we did this as a test to see if we would see any gains either in HP or mpg etc. This video was done to help others who might be considering this upgrade who are looking for real life numbers from someone.
Personally, I keep everything stock....
