@@Farout397 growl...Yes, but not by much since it's still EPA compliant. After the intake horn was installed, you can hear it during low rpm when pulling off and on colder days up to about 3k rpms. As for throttle response, pedal monster cured most of the dead feel before I installed the intake box.
Great vid by the CP team! Love vids like this with structured data and pros/cons for each application, without bias. Every driver is different and their wants/application/usage is different than the next. Great to see raw data with pros and cons for each item. Well done Nick and CP Team! Setting the bar high on the informative vids. This would even make Gale Banks proud (lol). Hope to see more vids like this for other common upgrades! 👌💪
Hey Nick, love all your videos! I'd be very curious to see what this same test would do with a Banks intake on it because of Gale stating that he's the only one with a true larger intake tube all the way through versus the others having a larger intake tube that bottle necks down to factory size.
@Midlifeglamping We requested an intake from Banks to put in this test but it was still in R&D when we requested it and did these tests. There may be another intake shootout coming in the future which should have a banks intake in the group so keep an eye out for that.
Would love to see the Banks intake tested. They have numbers, but it's on a bone stock truck. So wonder how it would do with the turbo, tune combo you used in your test. But the general idea I'm getting from this test is unless you throw a tune on the truck, an intake is not worth it. Seems like the truck does not know what to do with the extra air flow on the stock tune.
Tuning is always going to be your best bang-for-the-buck. An intake without tuning may still provide some benefits but likely not enough to have a noticeable impact.
That stealth 64 is a great upgrade. I wonder if the results would be the same with a stock turbo? Im guessing a little less air required. Great video Nick!
I can live with emissions compliant but not with coked up intake passages. What I want to know is why can’t the egr system draw from post DPF system? The extra length in pipe would also cool the EGR a bit before being recirculated.
I listen to the podcast and watch almost all the videos I know which one u kept 😎I wonder how the banks compare to these? I ask because I have your tuning Duramax tuning love it but I started with all the banks stuff and kept the banks intake ty
Best air box video I've seen! Thanks Nick! I have the s&b on my 21 Ram 3500 HO with your tuning. Love it. One question, did you leave the side panel off or on for the tests?
I don’t care so much, as I have the S&B but I would imagine the metal fab intake woul have some heat soak loss, even throw all testing shows menial hp and tq gains I fell long haul would lose those numbers
I always throw a cold air intake on all my diesels and I usually buy s&b there are minor changes in power but mostly sound. In my Cummins I tried a banks and noticed a pretty big difference over the others
Speaking on the sealed or no sealed part of the video. Two weeks ago a relative drove my duramax through a wash and the intake I have did nothing to block the water and somehow dirty water got in my filter and took out my turbo. I have an HSP intake on my LML and yeah but now I gotta buy another 68mm turbo 💀 and I know they make those water proof filter cover things but I just never got one. Also the HSP intakes are completely open underneath them, you can see all the way to the ground if you look from the top down.
That sucks about loosing a turbo. Hope it comes back together quickly for you. If you decide to switch things up, our Stealth 67G2 turbo may a good option for you. duramaxtuner.com/turbo-chargers/stealth-series.html
I’m in the same boat as one of other commenters. I have a banks intake on my 21’ Ram with your Tuning. I’d be interested to see what the gains really look like. PS- Your Customer Service is second to none.
@@Duramaxtuner If you were closer to where I live, I would let you do the tests with my deleted 2019 L5P. I did the WC piping and programming, but now curious with the Banks Air box I am using over the other ones. Ultimate goal is to acquire a 64mm turbo for mine and then it will be complete.
I wouldn't expect a noticeable MPG gain from an FPR switch. Same as the race plug. At best, both of those upgrades would be helpful in a total peak power scenario.
I ran the s&b for a few months until I got my WCF stage 2 kit. I just put the intake on today so I will make my decision after a few months running the WCF
I know your a Duramax guy, but any chance you could do this test on a 5th gen cummins? Been wanting to get an air intake for my 21 ram, just not sure if it's worth the money. Thanks. Real shame you guys can only do emission intacted tunning.
Good question. I’m sure the metal would transfer more under hood heat. But remember there’s a lot of air coming through that intake so I suspect the net effect to be minimal. I do not have data to confirm that suspicion :-)
Question, may be a dumb one but still will ask. Would either of these setups make more power with the top half removed? Like the clear cover on the S&B. Any concerns or potential issues?
I tired this and I definitely felt and heard a difference. I did the turbo whistle and really heard no difference. Took of the clear cover and side seal and really made a difference. I wanted to ask this question as well. So the only risk is getting water and or debris into it? In south Texas, not much water to worry about. The filter is on their tight to keep debris out. Missing the sound because I put it all back on, so would love some advice on the risks.
@tylerhogsten When we did these tests the Banks intake was still under production. We haven't reached out to Banks for another one since but this may be something we re-visit.
@chrismcalister9148 The E.O. Tune that Nick talks about in this video is still waiting to pass CARB testing. He simply refers to it in this video because the version of the tune used in this video is the version that we submitted to CARB.
Well wouldn’t the computer have to adjust with the new intake on? I was told the computer has to relearn and adjust itself after driving it for a couple miles with the new intake to see hp/tq gains. I’m not sure tho but that’s what I was told about them.
@manuelestrada4705 There is no re-learn process for mass air flow calibration. It is always pre-determined in the tune. Being that we used a 50-state tune in all the tests, the intakes were all tested using the same mass air flow calibration to provide fair results.
Question is how do these perform under on road circumstances. Say 90° ambient temps pulling 20k. Do they pull hot air in and cause power changes or do they keep cool air coming in and still add power found on the dyno?
@shanewhitmer3840 Any changes in ambient air temperature will have an effect on the outcome. However, pulling in ambient air will always be cooler than under hood temperatures once the vehicle is up to temp. That being said, all of the data that we present in this video should be an accurate reflection of the difference in performance that you can expect out of these intakes. The load you are pulling will only have an effect on the air the engine is demanding so you will most likely see your greatest gains in performance under a heavy load.
Nick why was vane position higher on the aftermarket intakes? Does the ecm see higher mass flow and adds more fuel so it closes vanes more for greater boost to match? I am just wondering if more boost is because of the vane position or another reason
