    Love seeing the 6.0 getting the much-deserved love here.
    I’ll never forget my 03 6.0.
    Sold it at 420k on the odo.
    Only problem was a manifold gasket.
    One of the most durable gas burners on the road.
    In my opinion the tundra is the only gasser that is comparable.

    Hey nice video, bud. Thanks for posting. I bought a 2019 Chevy 2500HD LT double cab with the 6.0. At the time I was thinking about waiting for the 2020’s but when I heard the 6.0 motor was going away I made my decision. The 6.0 is a great workhorse of a motor, heavy duty for sure. Love it.

      Thanks I appreciate it! Good decision you made. Wait for the 6.6 to be tested for a few years, let them update there interior better then maybe go for a new one later down the road. And for now enjoy the tried and true version, while everyone else test out the new equipment haha.

      I bought a 2019 for exactly the same reason. Replaced a 2009 that I has absolutely zero problems with. Awesome truck so I wanted one exactly the same. Let the 2020+ ripen for a decade or so then maybe I’ll be ready again.

    I just bought a 2012 2500hd 6.0 and it’s a great truck. I came from a jacked up deleted and tuned high output powerhouse cummins and I’m pleasantly surprised with the 6.0. I didn’t need the Cummins and it was getting too expensive to continue driving.

    Felt bad about overpaying for my 2015 2500 with 85k miles. But damn, these trucks are rock solid and this one has been meticulously maintained. It’s only money, I’ll pay it off and drive it til the wheels fall off. Headers and tune coming soon!

    I tow a 10k trailer 12000 miles per year for my business and after doing all my cost breakdown analysis with acquisition cost, fuel mpg, maintenance, depreciation, insurance and registration I found projected total cost of ownership over a 10yr period to be $100/month cheaper to run gas than diesel. I traded my 2009 duramax in for a 6.0l (2015 gmc) and have never been happier. Mixed city/highway driving and idling was 10.6mpg with my d-max; getting 8.2mpg under the same conditions with my 6.0l. (Again, 100% towing). It's way quieter, way smoother, and it blows hot air out the dash before I am out of the driveway. My dmax took 5 minutes going down the road to warm up.
    I'm with you completely; if you're not towing 20k every single day you don't need the diesel. I can still tow up all the Arizona mountains around me at 65 which is as fast as anyone towing should be going. MPG in the early 2000s diesels was 50% better than gas. In the newer diesels it's only a 30% advantage. With diesel fuel costing on average 10% more than gas this reduces the advantage even more. I just can't see why so many people are so obsessed with diesel anymore. Nowadays they break twice as often and cost twice as much to fix as gas. They also cost 3x as much to maintain. It should really be a rare, niche market option, not 90% of the HD trucks on a dealership lot.
    I actually expect the resale value to get closer to or even break even with diesel in the future as more and more people get fed up with all the problems and expense of owning diesels and start looking for a good used gas engine truck.
    You've got a gem, (we both do!) Hold onto it!

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It truely is a nice truck. And with that said I miss it everyday already lol. Yup I sold it back to the dealership, but Everytime I see one driving buy, I point to it and tell my wife I want my truck back haha. But we decided to do a truck camper, one that sits in the bed, so I went out and got a dually. Just feels more safe having a dually with that, And new ones are expensive. So I found a 2005 Chevy ext cab 4x4 dually with the 8.1L gas engine and Allison trans. Another legendary combo put out by Chevy. And that 8.1 is a torque monster. But I can honestly see why they kept that 6.0 and kept improving it. I was getting alot better MPG out of the 6.0 and yes the 8.1 is more powerful, but no so much that it's a must compared to the newer 6.0. Maybe on the heaviest of loads I'd want the 8.1L, but all around that 6.0 is better. I mean the way they had it set up on that 2018 3/4 ton, it was capable of towing just as much as my 2005 1 ton dually. It's only about 1k less tow capacity then the 05 dually actually. That's nuts. But in payload terms the dually definitely wins. Which is why I switched.

    • @Moskin
      @Moskin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UprootedAdventures Oh man, bummer to hear! The 8.1 is solid. I had one in my first truck (a dually). Felt like a sports car when I took the trailer off!
      Mine was a 97 and ate a fuel pump every year. I'm sure that will have been fixed by the 05s. You won't pass a gas station but that truck should still last you a long time!
      Maybe in a couple years you'll find a screaming deal on a dually version of the 6.0 gasser. Hard to find but dealers often dump them cheap when they get them because they think nobody wants gas.

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Moskin Yeah that would be ideal, if I came find one that doesn't have a million miles on it by then haha. This 05 I got only has 82k miles on it, another reason I got it. And the 97 year had the 7.4L 454 engine it. The 8.1l i have didnt come out till 2000 I believe in the next generation model. And is a 494 cu inch. It's a big beast of a engine. But I've talked to a guy that has that exact same Allison trans and 8.1l combo, and has 650k original miles on it, never been replaced. Just changed the fluids and it'll run forever. Same as that 6.0l. Except as you said pass everything but a gas station lol. And actually in 05 this 8.1l has just about as much power as the 6.6 diesel did that year. It actually has a little more horsepower and a little less torque. In 06 is when the Duramax got a boost in power and started beating the 8.1l.

      Ah, very nice. Guess I got my engines mixed up on my old truck. 454 was still beastly. I drove an 8.1 for sure in a box truck though. Had no problems moving it. If I remember right it was an option in the Avalanche for awhile. That is such overkill for that truck lol.

The 6.0L in the GMC, or Chevrolet HD truck lineup is a very impressive powerplant. Even though it may not have "high torque or horsepower" like the Diesel, it performs very very good! It is a strong reliable HEAVY DUTY engine you CAN rely on. GMC Sierra 2500 HD is a big truck! You will notice it right away, it will tow so much better! Than any half ton by far! I love mine! It towes amazing, and I wouldn't trade it for any gas 3/4 ton, or 1 Ton diesel! These trucks are made for one thing and one thing only, and that's Work! Way better made!

    Bought a 2017 2500hd, 6.0, had it just over4 years now. I only drive it in the summer, when the first snow hits, it doesn't go on the road until in the spring after the first few rains wash the salt off the road. I have just under 30,000 miles on it. I bought a 01 new, still have it and drive it all year round. It has 216,000 miles on it. Got the engine replaced with 60,000 because of the piston slap problem. So the engine has 156,000 on it. The biggest problem is the Michigan winter, it seems like every time they predict snow, the counties salt the s - - out of the roads, major rust problems.

    I came to a similar conclusion on the 1/2 vs 3/4 debate in that a 1/2 has all the downsides of driving a truck, but has a much lower payload/towing capacity. 3/4s gain a lot of capacity for relatively small additional expense over the 1/2 tone.

    I just bought a 2016 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD 4X4 Z71 6.0L Crew Cab with the 6.5" Bed. I was wondering if it will do good towing a 5th wheel? I tow a 6,000 lb travel trailer now with about about 600 lbs of stuff and people no problem, but now I want to upgrade to a 5th Wheel that is "1/2" ton towable allegedly...😅 this new 5th wheel weighs about 10,000 lbs fully loaded. Has a kingpin weight of id say atleast 1,700 lbs. My payload is 2,718 lbs (door sticker) but research says its closer to 3,000 lbs. It has 4:10 Gears so it can tow I believe 13K or 14K. Should I be good with this gas 6.0L. Thinking of towing every other weekend for short 100-300 mile hauls and occasionally maybe 1,200-2,000 mile hauls.

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it will have a issue with that at all. Don't think I'd tow it with a half ton though haha. But you're truck should handle it just fine. Well within it's limits.

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well It'll Definitely be comfortable to drive in. If your towing something I'd definitely go this route. If not the half ton version would get you a little better gas mileage. I seemed to have gotten good MPG but some other people in other areas aren't able to match the same MPG. But then again it's built to haul, so if your not hauling it'll last you just that much longer. And if you do plan to haul, why not be over confident then under confident.

    I have a 2015 HD2500 4x4 LT. 6.0 with 268,000 on it. Spent a lot of time on the beach with it. GM didn't do a very good job with the undercarriage. Rust very easily. Replaced both front hub assembly. Stabilitrack track light wouldn't go off. Replaced font rotors, brake & calipers at 218k. Needs to be done again. Needs front end rebuild. Headlight burns out on right side every 3 or 4 months. Burns a quart of oil between changes. I change at 5 or 6k. One new battery. That's it. Fuel mileage...... 12, 14 if the winds at your back. MAX. Slow start sometimes. I think it needs a fuel pump.

    I'm not trying to stir up trouble, but I've never quite figured out why anyone would buy a short bed truck unless they just got a really good deal on a used one. I get it, each to his own, everyone has their own preferences. I always wonder what the thought process is for the guys who buy a brand new one and they have a choice of long bed or short bed? I hear a lot of dudes say they need the short bed so it will fit in their garage. But, I see you live out in the country and I didn't see a garage. The long beds tow so much better and you can haul more stuff and if you get a fifth wheel, there is enough room for the hitch and firewood, supplies, etc. Short beds jerk around more when towing and they even ride worse unloaded. Like I said, each to their own, just something that has always made me think as I've been driving trucks for over 40 years and have had both long and short beds (only short beds when I got a good deal that I couldn't pass up, lol) Good video, thanks for posting.

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Like you said it was just a preference. I lived out in the boonies but go into town and trying to park a long bed heavy duty truck ain't fun lol. The truck is massive as it is. 6 and 1/2 ft bed is plenty long for what I needed it for. I can see if it was a true every day work truck where you're hauling all the time, thats where the long bed would come in handy. But this was my daily driver that was able to handle a decent load when needed type vehicle.

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never tune my vehicles, so unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for you, I've always believed in leave it stock and it'll last alot longer. Although tunning for gas Mileage shouldn't hurt it at all. For me where I live just higher elevation and temperature seems to get me that gas mileage. Best average I got out of it was actually almost 19mpg but that was going down hill for about 200 miles from in the mountains down to the valley. So able to coast more.

I've put 170,000 miles on it with zero issues and getting 13 mpg and about 11 towing a cargo trailer. I found a 2018 denali 2500 with a 6.0 the other day that only has 25,000 miles on it with a lift and 35s on it at a dealer in Florida, I flew out that night and drove it back 500 miles to Nashville. I got less than 9 mpg. Then I towed my trailer to Chattanooga and back this weekend and got an average of 5.8 mpg. I've already got a call in about re-gearing it,but I can't find any info about actually tuning results for towing. Did you have any luck finding a good tuner?

    • @UprootedAdventures
      @UprootedAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can see in the city and lower elevation that would be the norm for the 6.0l. I'm at 6,000 ft elevation, so less air less fuel used. And I don't have to romp on it to get out in front of traffic. Just light foot everywhere. It also has the 245/75-17 tires on it so not very big. So take all that into account, I never saw less then 14.5 mpg, and that was only in the winter months letting it idle and warm up for a while in the mornings. If you're not pulling anything heavy often I'd leave it stock and that motor will last you a long time.
