    GM IS EXPANDING ITS RECALL ON THE BOLT! The company announced that it is recalling bolts from the 2020 to 2022 years as well as some 2019 Bolts that were not covered under the previous recall. The recall now includes all Bolts beginning with the 2017 version. The problem is a chance of fire in the high voltage battery pack which could occur when the vehicle is stopped, parked and not plugged in to charge. GM says, owners should park their vehicles outside and away from houses until the repairs can be done. The automaker says, in rare circumstances there may be two defects in a single battery cell. GM will spend an additional 1.1 billion to replace the batteries in these additional vehicles. The 2022 Bolt EUV is included in the recall.

      Such a shame. I hope they can sort it out. Didn't realize it was effecting the newest model years as well. I understand that Hyundai was using batteries out of the same LG factory. I'd love for these companies to get this right. America is ready for electric!

      GM currently has a recall on all model year Bolts through 2022. It affects about 141,000 vehicles globally. GM has confirmed 12 battery fires have been investigated involving Bolt cars in the previous and new recall population, said GM spokesman Dan Flores.

    Just a quick info about the regen braking (or one pedal driving) . I drive an EV and it took some time to get used to it. The trick is, coming from a normal gas car, we have the habit of lifting the foot quickly, completely off the acceleration pedal. In fact, with the regen braking, you have to lift it up gradually until the car stops. It is not a must to use it, but if you do, I guarantee you'll find a difference in economy plus it makes for a much smoother ride when done correctly.

    We got our 2020 Bolt at end of 2020 for 14k under msrp in US. Which made it so affordable we couldn't pass up going to EV. She may not be cute, but pretty good car to drive with no fuel or really maintenance costs

    The trick to make the one pedal driving smooth is to lift off the accelerator smoothly, rather than just lift off. By modulating the accelerator up as well as down you can provide a smooth passenger experience. I don't use it on our Bolt as I am not attentive enough my wife says.

      You are missing out on REGEN. You can always just use the REGEN switch on the left side of the steering wheel as you are going down a hill or slowing down. I have been able to add up to 3 more miles of range going down a long hill.

It will be interesting to see which method is most efficient: 1 pedal alone, 1 pedal + hand brake regen, drive alone, drive + hand brake regen. I plan to test it on the road to Bogus Basin ski area (16 miles, climbing about 3,500ft). Eventually I’ll upload a video of that.

    Regarding the Bolt cellpack recalls, the batteries made by LG in South Korea for the Bolt and certain Hyundai/Kia EVs are the fire hazards.
    Part way through the 2019 model year, GM switched to using in-house batteries for the Bolt --- made at their battery plant in Warren Michigan. These US made battery packs ARE NOT subject to the fire hazard recall, only the South Korean LG produced batteries. Make sure to buy a used Bolt WITH the US MADE BATTERIES!
    As always, an informative and well-done review~

    I bought a 2017 Bolt last year for $20k USD which is a great buy considering I've never put gas or oil in it and there is NO maintenance schedule other than rotating the tires and replacing the in-cabin air filter which is laughable when you compare it to the typical maintenance schedule of a non-EV vehicle. At any rate, aside from this car being extremely economical to own it is a lot of fun to drive.
    The new battery pack was installed a few days ago and GM paid for a rental car the whole time the dealership had our Bolt EV. They were extremely professional throughout the entire process. I was very impressed by the way it was handled by them.
    Our new battery gives us a range of just under 300 miles which gets us anywhere we typically drive (for several days on a single charge). I've never been the type of person who does "cross country road trips" (I don't know anyone who does those actually) so having a really long-range, let's say a 1,000-mile range wouldn't benefit me at all. I drive to the airport if I want to go that far. Ours has leather seats, both front and back seats are heated as is the steering wheel. It has a really nice stereo too and the hatchback with folding rear seats means we have a ton of cargo space. In a year of driving, I've only actually hit the brake pedal maybe twice when someone pulled out in front of me. One pedal driving is awesome.

      Awesom buy! Right now the used car prices are high!! I'm waiting for a price drop,but the Bolt makes a lot of sense. Only negative are the seats! For me itc we will mean stopping to stretch on trips longer than 100 miles.

      How often do you replace tires? I'm thinking heavy car and instant torque = more frequent tire changes?

  • @erikstephens34
    @erikstephens34 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    A great review. On paper the EUV has less cargo but in reality it's slightly bigger. Some engineers at GM have clarified that the way cargo space is measured goes against the EUV. Also just as a note the Bolt EV/EUV have a software blended braking system. So no mater what mode your in they are always trying to maximize regeneration. The only difference is software mapping. In one pedal mode there is more lift off regeneration on the accelerator. In normal mode there is more regeneration built into the brake pedal. Depending on driving habits it generally works out about the same.

    NEW RECALL! 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolts under another recall over battery fire risk. GM will conduct a new recall to replace defective battery modules. This is in addition to a previous software update recall. The new statement tells customers to use Hilltop Reserve or Target Charge Level charging modes, depending on model year to limit charging to 90%. Bolt EV owners should avoid letting battery charge go below 70 miles of remaining range and to charge their vehicle after each use. They have also been told to continue to park their vehicle outside and not leave vehicles charging overnight.

      This goes back to my comments about my cousins Bolt having recurring issues with charging. GM needs to sort these problems out. There reputation for unreliability is killing the brand. Cadillac seems to be doing a lot better than Chevy. This new “ fix” means you can’t use the full charge, lose range, or risk the car burning to ashes. Not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

    • @kratosdisciple4637
      @kratosdisciple4637 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There have been 9 confirmed cases of 2017 - 2019 Bolts catching fire. Roughly 75,000 Bolts sold in that time period. This equals a .012% chance of a 2017-2019 Bolt catching fire. By comparison, Tesla delivered 25 Model S Plaids on June 10 and 1 of the 25 caught fire. This equals a 4.0% chance of a Model S Plaid catching fire.
      So what do these numbers indicate?
      Nothing.
      The reality is that all car manufacturers have recalls. It is the nature of the business.

      Bolts and Fires! Something to worry about if you are an owner:
      Until GM can get parts to dealers and people can get their vehicles in for the fix, owners of the recalled cars should not park them in garages.
      Also, Flores said GM recommends they do the following:
      Return the vehicle to the 90% state of charge limitation using Hilltop Reserve mode (for 2017-18 model years) or Target Charge Level mode (for 2019 model year), or visit a dealer to make that change.
      Charge the vehicle after each use and avoid depleting the battery below 70 miles of remaining range.
      Park the vehicle outside immediately after charging and do not leave the vehicle charging overnight.
      Customers who have not received the advanced diagnostics software should visit their dealer to get the update. After obtaining the software, limit the state of charge to 90% and follow the advice above.
      The starting price for a 2021 base Chevrolet Bolt EV is $36,500. Flores said GM is not providing an estimate at this time for how much this recall and the first one will cost the automaker. Flores did say that since the first recall repair, including the advanced software diagnostics, the cost to GM “was not material” but GM did not disclose a cost for it.

    • @tlevans62
      @tlevans62 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kratosdisciple4637 unfortunately, it's not just the fires, it's the reduction in range as well and the way it can be charged. The software "fix" involves not being able to charge the vehicle overnight and limits useful battery use between 90% and 70 miles. That seems like a temporary "fix" at best.

    Before criticizing One-Pedal mode, which has always been available on the Bolt (just shift into "L"), you should use One-Pedal mode for a few days. If it makes you sick, you are definitely NOT using it proficiently. When you do, it is much smoother than "D." It offers much finer control over slowing that the brake pads do. It is much safer when driving downhill. It makes driving on twisty roads easier as you never need to switch to the brake pedal. It saves your brake pads and rotors. And it recharges the battery better, offering better range.

    GM is definitely firing a shot over their competitor's bows with that $31,000 (US) price. And I am SO glad that GM finally came to their senses and made DC Fast charging STANDARD instead of as an expensive up-charge. Kind of disappointed that the max DC charge rate is only 55kw when others are doing 100-250kw. Still, this is an AMAZING price for what you get. I hope they've sorted out the battery fire issues.

    Heavily refreshed is a big overstatement. It is the same vehicle as the 2021 with a new body, interior, and Super Cruise. It still has the same battery pack, same slow (55kW compared to Tesla's 250kW) DC charge speed, and same inability to precondition the car like many competitors. This is coming from a Bolt owner.

      @@314jeepsnmopars3 That may be the issue, but I was referring to a recent story in the news. The owner's car caught on fire and it had to be junked. GM acknowledged it was their fault (the battery) but wouldn't replace the vehicle. They also wouldn't waive the remaining $12,000 balance owed on the car. Ultimately, the GM dealership ghosted him and told him to sue them. GM would certainly have lost in court, but they know individuals almost never have the money or power to sue a large company and win. The process is lengthy and expensive. He opted not to sue of course. He now makes payments on a car he doesn't own to a company who didn't stand behind their vehicles.

      @@willlyles4031 that's the shadiest shit I've heard a car company do in recent history... but again it's from the company who's Cobalt ignitions were faulty and told owners to just not put a ton of weight on the key. I think if enough of these owners get together and get backed by a good lawyer that deals with these kind of things they may come out ahead. I could see GM even making a closed door deal to make them shut up since a case like that would make them look really bad in the new EV way they are going, and bad press like that would make people not buy GM EVs and in the end making the company file for bankruptcy if enough people didn't trust GM when the push for EVs goes full swing.

      I think more importantly is that the Bolt’s battery has a very good thermal management system…meaning if it’s extremely hot or cold outside, and plugged in, the battery is kept at optimum temperature preserving longevity…unlike say the Nissan Leaf. Check out Weber automotive on yt. He does a tear down of a bolt and goes into detail of the engineering compared to others in a series of bolt videos

      Shit I have a 24kWh Leaf in Canada and I dont need a heat pump. They dont work well below 0c and above that you do not require much energy to heat the incoming air with a regular resistive heater. You might use 2-3 kWh for every hour of driving for heat which is really just a drop in the bucket compared to the energy used to drive. With the massive battery in that I would rather save a few $k off of the sticker price than pay for a heat pump,

Hard plastic is easy to clean and condition. I hate the fabric or anything like is on the roof, seats and anything can get dirty and can't easily wipe off. The EUV version, starting at just $40k CAD is going too sell like hotcakes. Especially in the BC market where gas is crazy expensive and you get an 8k subsidy from the governments. Throw in the included charger credit and bingo, Chevy have a huge winner. I think the EUV makes a great vehicle for an urban/suburban family with a couple of kids, especially for a second car. I think the Ioniq 5 and EV6 will be more refined with higher tech, but won't be worth the price stretch for most families. Kudos GM.
