    Hey Doug, here are a few things you should consider when reviewing evs:
    -Does it have a heat pump? This can really make the difference in cold weather range and performance
    -Level 3 charge ability/speed. Most new evs will have level 3 ability but the speed at which they charge can vary greatly. For example, the Bolts can do about 50kwh max while the Kona can do around 70kwh, and the rates seem to be increasing with newer models all the time. This can have a big impact on how long you need to charge on a road trip.
    -Battery cooling. Regulating battery temperature is one of the most important things in maintaining battery health. Almost all evs use liquid cooling...except the Leaf. Do not buy a Leaf.
    I just bought a 2020 Bolt and had to look into all these things before deciding to buy it. I really like it so far even though there are better things on the market now.
    Anyway I'm sure you won't read ths ridiculously long comment but love the videos!

      @pepstein 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Doug is most definitely not the best resource for choosing an EV. His reviews are still useful, but he doesn't cover the fundamentals of what makes a good EV. For that I think Bjørn Nyland is the best.

      I own a 2017 … it's been a wonderful car, but if you ever want to take it outside of its range, you need to get a Tesla for the supercharging network. The level 3 charging network is too unreliable for road trips no matter what all these reviewers say.

    • @cole8124
      @cole8124 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the Doug missed the ‘value’ argument in this one. The crazy good value is in the new Bolt EV at $31,995. A good EV for around town driving that does the basics well.
      Once you move into the vehicle being reviewed here, it’s anywhere between 2-4K more than a comparable Model 3 SR+. It’s hard to argue the Bolt is better ‘value’ at a higher price with all around less features and capabilities. The paltry DC fast charging speed of 55KW compared to the Tesla’s 170KW is just one of them. Tesla is also expected to add driver monitoring with their existing interior camera on the Model 3 which will take back the crown from super cruise in terms of convenience.

    • @stevenk195
      @stevenk195 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Technically, there is no such thing as "level 3" charging. There is level 1 and 2 AC, and level 1 and 2 DC. Level 2 AC is using the built-in charger of the car and is limited. The car can sit for a few hours and charge. DC charging is level 2 also, but much much faster. Typically where you see the 50, 100, 150+ kw charging stations. Unfortunately, the Bolt is still limited to 50kw max DC charging.

      I thought GM had already learned their lesson from this. Cars like the 1979 Malibu wagon were deemed to have a less than optimal brake light mounting placement in the bumper. All the newer model wagons had higher brake light placement. When GM changed from the G1500 van to the Express and Savana vans all the brake lights were moved higher too. I guess the current engineers have nothing to do with the engineers of 30 years ago and the lesson will have to be learned all over again. I just cannot support a company like this.

    Great review Doug. I own a 2017 Bolt EV which has been a great car. I actually think this EUV is better looking than the EV model, but that is a matter of preference. Seems like a great value and believe this will be a terrific vehicle for Chevrolet. The two things Chevrolet needs to add is all wheel drive option, and a faster charging system. I do think you scored it a little low for fun factor however as I find it very fun to drive and it has better acceleration than most gas cars. Thanks again!

Of course, GM has had the battery recall, and my battery was replaced a few months ago with a brand new higher range batter with a new 8 year warranty. But I hadn't noticed much if any degradation of battery range after 4 years. I really believe these batteries will last a long time. The Bolt is great as a commuter and city car or for day trips within it's range. I personally would probably consider a Tesla or a gas car for cross country trips however until we get a better infrastructure of charging stations and faster chargers. I have fast charged my Bolt several times, and it works great with charging it to 80% within an hour.

There are other quirks that are more of a problem like the giant traction control button which is very easy to press when you put on the wireless phone charger. Also the phone charger sucks unless it is cold outside and you want to use your phone as a heater. All that said, I love my EUV. 15:20 I think is time for Doug to understand WHY most cars do not put pockets on the back of the driver seat!
    1. It's not ONLY for the people in the back, it can be used by the driver. A pocket in the back of the driver seat is almost impossible to reach BY the DRIVER!
    2. ANYTHING on the back of the DRIVER seat WILL annoy the HELL of its back! As a driver is ALWAYS required, of all seats, that seat is the one always in use! So, to avoid annoyances in a place hard to reach (SECURITY reasons) most companies do NOT put a pocket there!!!!!!11111

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @freepieanchipsgarage If that’s your only defense you must work for GM. The 3rd brake light is meant for drivers at a distance or behind a hill to see at first glance before the rest of the car is visible. I doubt you pay attention to the bumper of the car in front of you when driving in heavy traffic. You usually just look at the red brake lights that are already illuminated. If they never light up and it’s the lights in the bumper nobody is going to see that out the corner of their eye. Imagine someone switching lanes and getting behind one of these that started braking. You would crash right into it and never know the bumper lights even existed.

    The lower break lights and turn signals are because of cost cutting reasons. As you said, they are required by regulation if the normal ones would move away with the trunk lid. So they make these required (fall back) ones the only working break and turn signal lights. In expensive cars with split rear lights (I.e. Audi Q7) you do have the regular lights AND the auxiliary lights below if the trunk lid is open.
    Other cars without that redundancy are MINI countryman or some Korean models.

      But it doesn't make sense because they have a tail lamp assembly on the quarter panels that don't move, where they clearly can put brake lights. Because they didn't, now it requires making 6 tail lamp assemblies with 6 circuit boards and 6 different wiring harnesses rather than 4. On a ferrari California or a q7 or a clubman or a lucid air I get it because they made the tailgade opening the entire width of the car. But on the bolt they didn't.
