    UPDATE AUG 20 2021: GM has increased the Recall network to include ALL Bolt EVs and Bolt EUVs, sold and manufactured to date. They are pausing the Bolt production at the U.S. plant next week (Aug 23-27) and I am guessing to figure out a game plan for future production. I am sure they will get it fixed, but will take awhile unfortunately and this will discourage many potential BEV buyers.

      Dude, this is a 1.8 billion dollars fiasco. The Bolt is a fire hazard piece of junk.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I totally disagree. Go check your facts with other recalls for ICEVs, like BMW recalling over 1 million vehicles for fire issues in the past. Bolt is a great BEV and 19 fires out of over 100,000 units sold, is not a "hazard". Geez!

    • @gamergeek8933
      @gamergeek8933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@UTUBESUCK666 It isnt technically a bolt issue. Hyundai has also had recalls related to fires. So has tesla. Batteries are volatile. The percentage of bolts with issues is .007% from what I understand. The national average in the US is .06% of cars catch fire. GM is actually doing good getting ahead of serious problems. Good on them, its rare they do that.

    I am an owner of a 2019 Bolt EV - Premier. I now have a little over 54K miles my vehicle. I use the car for business and personal travel. My family of four had a great 1,000 mile trip in our Bolt from Austin, Texas to Disneyworld, Florida last year, and the Level 3 charging network worked very well; thank you Electrify America!!! I have had a great experience with the car......great job GM. This car has proven to me that EV's are now superior automobile technology versus ICE cars!!! I trust that GM will quickly resolve the fire problem that exists in a very small number the cars that have been manufactured to date. I am looking forward to purchasing a Bolt EUV in the near future.

      Thanks for watching and for the sharing your experiences. Yes I agree, the Bolt is a great EV and I hope GM can fix the issues with the few and soon. Glad you proved that you don't need a Telsa to roadtrip (which I already knew). Also glad you realized that while BEVs do have some shortcomings, the positives outway the negatives for most people!

    I now everyone says buy a Tesla, but I do not like the large center screen. The Bolt is more like something I'm use to with the center screen built into the dash. It may seem silly to most, but that is the reason I'd buy a Bolt instead of a Tesla or Mustang Mach-E. I do not like that large center screen sticking up out of nowhere. And I like the speedo, along with other information, right in front of me when I'm driving. The Bolt offers this and I like it. I do not own one yet, but I will. Next year when my 2016 Corolla has a few more miles on it I'll give it to our son and buy a Bolt EV. I thought about the EUV, but I think the EV will be what I'll buy.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and for sharing your perspective. I get it, a Tesla is not for everyone hence why I don't push them only, like so many other "fanboy" TH-camrs out there. I try to position all EVs available to folks and help them to make an informed decision, if an EV can fit in their lives.
      Glad to hear you are thinking of EV adoption next year and for sure, the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are great options for all-electrics! Stay tuned for my EUV review video coming out soon.

    Although not priced for the masses, this family of cars (Bolt EV, EUV) fits into that category, and is a good choice to have a look at (I’ve owned one for 3.5 years, and still love it today). People get stuck on the slow charging speed, but if you charge at home almost all the time, charging speed - for the most part doesn’t matter, and you can change your travel habits a bit to work with this car once there’s a good charging infrastructure in place. Having an EV with a range of 200 plus miles - everyday - is a great thing - especially in the cold. If your electric cost is reasonable (mine is 15.6 cents/kwh) the cost of fuel savings over a year will pay you lots of money back - every year - that you’ll never get back in a gas powered car. Great review, Ken! I totally agree on the 120% recommendation.

    • @JohnRoss1
      @JohnRoss1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes not competitive with other cars even if cheaper. I'd pay more to get it. With only one trim level in Canada they are leaving money on the table as people will look elsewhere for better tech. But there is the Hummer EV or maybe buy 3 Bolts!

    I drove hybrids for many years and always tried to keep them in electric mode as far as I could. I realized then that what I really hoped for was a full EV. My 2020 Bolt EV was a great value and I've been pleased with it. It's too soon to upgrade. I would prefer to wait until a comparable EV appears with faster charging and longer range. We'll see if it's a Bolt. I have zero concern about this car catching fire.

    Most reviews I've seen of the 2022 Bolt find the seats mediocre to OK which is a big step up from the previous years. This is the first review where they have been classed as very comfortable. i hope they are decent because the Bolt is a great practical package. It drives very well and has an excellent driving position and visibility. And it is one hell of a bargain.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Yes both myself and others sitting in the front seats found them to be very nice. I drove around with my weight I carry (I am not skinny!) and had no issues. Really comfortable. Same on the EUV. And yes, save for only up to 60kWh DCFCing, it is "one hell of a bargain" for a BEV - it's the cheapest in Canada, before any incentives.

    • @johnm2879
      @johnm2879 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EVRevolution I'm glad you cleared up the seats issue. The Bolt looks like the complete package - quick, tight, solid, good visibility and seating position, very good range, practical and cheap.
      A lot of people can downsize into a Bolt and not lose anything - that is what we have to do - both electrify and downsize.
      And walk and bike more.

    Welcome to 2022. I visited a GM dealership in Ottawa specifically to see the Bolt. After GM spent millions in ads to get me in the door I was met by a sales rep whose first words were “It’s sold out, you can’t buy it, you can’t test drive it” Hello to you too. The next 20 minutes were spent telling me how terrible electrics are for the environment and how I should be buying a V8 Camaro. I’m 68 and drove into the dealership in a Buick LaCrosse. Yep, perfect candidate for a gas guzzler.

      @EVRevolution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Thomas, thanks for watching and really appreciate your comments and feedback. That is a terrible EV experience and if their is a weak link in the major OEM's movements to electrification, it is their poor dealer network. It really is a hit and miss, as many dealers have and are embracing EVs and promoting them. In fact, I was just contacted by a local GM dealership to talk to them about educating their staff and customers/prospects on EVs, in order that they are better prepared to position them.
      I hope you may continue your EV-quest with a more positive GM experience. Keep me posted!

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Have not seen any charge curves yet for the 22's, however I suspect it will be exactly the same as the 20-21's. That is when the cells/pack makeups where changed. Actually a bit earlier from later 2019 onwards. GM shifted supply from South Korea LG Chem to North American (USA-made) LG Chem (now "Energy") and that solved the potential fire issue.

    As usual a great review! Actually GM’s second EV. EV1 was first. Bolt is good vehicle for it’s 2017 roots but there is a lot of new competition now. Glad to hear the seats are improved, but 60 KW is just too slow for fast charging now when the competitors have 100 to 250 KW. GM has a lot of work to have 25 models by 2025.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EVRevolution agreed Ken, those high charge rates are typically only available for a brief period under ideal conditions and low state of charge. Charge curves are actually more important than max rate, and after several hours of road trip driving, a good relaxing break is a good idea anyway

      @JohnRoss1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EVRevolution Other than fixing the unresolved battery issue in the older Bolts ;Chev is offering better seats and a bit better tech. Only one Trim level and no adaptive Cruise control is unusual. A local dealer is asking $32K (for a 2017 Premier with 32,000 km,. I didn't investigate further (probably much lower price to buy) but I wonder about the battery status. At least Hyundai/Kia says they will replace the LG batteries (slowly) in their affected car models.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Ross For the used Bolts, not all of the pre mid-2019's have the battery pack potential issue. If you are looking at a used Bolt, you can get the dealer to check the VIN against the recall notice. I personally would not worry as if it is not on the list, then great. If it is, it would get fixed prior to you buying it or picking it up. Seems the problem stemmed from a production issue in South Korea by LG Chem, and it did not affect all of the units that I understand. I may be wrong on that. After mid 2019, the GM and LG Energy partnership opened a plant in the USA (Michigan I think) that is now supplying all the Bolt EV and EUV packs. That is why this issue is not existing on mid-end of 2019 and up, since the manufacturing process was fixed in the U.S. plant.
      Hope you find an EV one way or another and if I can be of more help, please email me.

    As this recall time frame is unknown but due to the numbers we went into the GM dealership yesterday and took our deposit back on the EUV. It’s been built and sitting at the plant since early July waiting on a chip for SuperCruise feature we ordered.
    So put an order on a TM3 SR+ due here in BC near the end of September.
    It’s too bad as we think GMs refreshed Bolts fixed a lot of the issues that have been ignored every yr since the 17 was produced.

    what are your thoughts on the rear brake and turn lights on the 2022 models? i think it's odd that there are tail lights in the normal spot, but the actual brake lights and rear turn signal are those tiny lights at the bottom. on some forums, some people complained about getting rear ended as well as getting pulled over because the cop didn't think their brake lights were working.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, thanks for watching. They are different but I think better than the pre-2022MY refresh. The LEDs are brighter and easier to see. There are other brands, most notably Hyundai and Kia that use a similar format for turn signals in the bumpers, on a few models mainly SUVs. I've not heard about any issues with this set up and if it would be a major safety issue, I am sure the designs would have changed. I did not notice any issues during my driving of the 2020 or 2022 Bolts, nor the 2022 Bolt EUV. Never heard of someone getting pulled over for this either. However, anything can happen.
      Don't feel it is a big deal in general. Of course if one gets rear ended, that is probably due to another factor and not the brake lights on the rear bumper. There is the rear high-mounted 3rd brake light too which is LED and very bright.

    There are many hundreds of thousand kilometers (even miles!?) on Chevrolet Bolts. I'm thinking 12 reported fires is sure causing a 'fuss'. I drove one (a 2019) almost 2500 km in the winter of 2021 without incident and enjoyed the driving experience so much that I ordered the new EUV which, at the moment, the Dealership cannot deliver to me for an unknown amount of time while the 'fiasco' gets sorted. It's the original pack and chemistry. Their new Ultium battery coming in the Caddy and Hummer will change things. But it also depends on the price point of a vehicle, and the needs of the owner. I don't need to charge fast, ever, so I'm happy not to pay thousands more than necessary.

    • @RobbieFitzgerald

      @@davidmccarthy6061 Thats not a free pass. If they really wanted to commit and switch people, they would do everything they can to add to the value of these cars which I do think is pretty good. But too many other options are out with faster charging and prices not far off.

      @warmonger2500 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EVRevolution My main complaint is that GM could have jumpstarted EVs more than twenty years ago. It certainly would have been more of an uphill battle, but they gave up. I understand they are a business, but they lacked bravery and foresight. Just ask Sears, Montgomery Ward, Toys R US, and many others about what happens to companies that don't push boundaries. Some who push too hard and too fast will certainly fail, but GM was big enough to keep EVs alive despite the initial loss. I won't forgive them for that. That is my stand, and I am simply sharing it, everyone is free to think and feel however they like.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @warmonger2500 Yes understand your viewpoint and well taken for sure. It's simply at that time, the battery technology was no where near where it would need to be for full-on production and continued offerings. GM could not afford to be the only one investing in it and you have to remember, when an OEM builds a vehicle, they have to support it via parts/service for 15 year after they discontinue it. The majority of parts for the EV1 were not available for this kind of support, either were the battery packs and components. So even if they wanted to continue with it, they could not as by law they have to do the 15-year thing. That is why they got all the vehicles back (except a small few) and crushed them. Again, read some stories from actual people who worked for GM and on the EV1 project, who wanted it to go on and you will understand the other side. Easy for you and me to be critical when it is not our business to run.

    I noticed Chevrolet that I will invoke the Hawaii Lemon Law and demand arbitration to 1) terminate my lease contract and 2) prorated return of upfront payment. There are so many issues with the battery, the limitations, and the reputation of the vehicle you would have to be insane to buy one now. The Bolt brand is dead and it will be a heavy lift for GM to restore customer confidence in its ability to build safe and reliable EVs. Don't think there is any reason to replace the batteries. Just terminate leases, and buyback purchased cars with generous trade in values and end the nightmare.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! I get where you are coming from and you have to do what you feel you need to do. I don't think the overall Bolt platform and vehicle is a bad car. The extreme vast majority of Bolt owners love their vehicles and quite frankly, would not want to give them back to trade on something else.
      For sure the huge inconvenience that GM is putting on owners with the restriction and long replacement/fix wait times, is unprecedented in the EV realm. But I believe the majority of owners will want to wait and get it done.
      GMs reputation for sure can be tarnished, however I do believe they are trying really hard to fix it as they are going deeper and deeper into electrification and need a good image to succeed. My 2 cents anyhow.
