- This is the first of several videos that I'm producing showing strategies that will earn a FOXHOUND Rank in MGS3. All footage comes from the HD Collection, and I've tried to narrate as much relevant information as possible.

this video came out EIGHT YEARS after the game. Amazing. And even five years after this video, I find myself here watching it. A testament to how good this game is.

I was watching ''how you don't play MGS 3'' which has a compilation of DSPgaming do one of the worst runs of that game i have ever seen. I was sick of of terrible your man is at that game, and decided to watch someone awesome play this game. IT's so refreshing to see it played like this, awesome stuff.
Same, those videos are like a medicine for DSP atrocious gameplay.
Wow, that was amazingly comprehensive. I played this game a lot but never at this level. I didn't know about the subtle mechanical nuances in guard behavior like the bit about looking at the guard's feet.
It's obvious though that besides excellent execution you need a total foreknowledge of levels and patrol timing, so it leaves no room for improvisation/recovery. That's why Euro Extreme isn't really for me but it's very entertaining to see the strategies involved in this.
The way you took down the ocelot unit was masterful. This is how metal gear should be played!
I've already used this guide to beat the game in the HD Edition, and now that the Master Collection is out, I have to do it again!
I really like the series, it is not just the gameplay, each part is deconstructed, explained and reconstructed, so you can really understand what is happening.

I started watching your vids originally back in 07/08 sometime,my friend had introduced me to the series at the time and I ended up buying MGS3(Which is my fav MGS in the series).
Then I saw how easily you manipulated the guards and juggled them,it was awesome!!

i know i'm way late to the party, but this is one of the best mgs walkthrough series i've ever watched. i love the fact that you not only show multiple methods of getting through each section of the game, but communicate how each of them works on a mechanical level.

I just finished my "Big Boss" emblem run for MGS4, and thanks to this amazingly detailed and helpful guide I'm starting a foxhound run for MGS3
James! In just a week after getting Big Boss in MGS2, I just claimed my title of Foxhound in MGS3, and I owe a lot of thanks, again, to your videos. My differences and notes below:
Firstly, similar to MGS2, I just did it on Extreme instead of Euro Extreme. Maybe after getting Big Boss on MGS4 and Markhor on MGS3, I can consider E Extreme on MGS2 and 3... but prolly not... the jump from hard to Extreme was crazy enough!!
Next, I appreciated your video breaking down the CQC. I never once ended up holding a guy up while he was on the ground. Nor did I knock a guy out with multiple chokes, because my finger was too prone to slashing their necks on accident. With that said that, just the knock downs, and then adding a tranq into them after the fact, was a great addition to my repertoire
I also thought the empty clip info was very good. Throughout the whole run, I don't think I ended up using an empty clip to advance either, lol. Mostly just used CQC, the tranq, and at times the cigs
I also never used rotten food, but I did blow up the food rooms to famish the guards on three occasions; first was the Warehouse near the Fear's area, to make it a little easier on the way back. Second was in the Gorki lab to help with the basement portion both ways. Third was the one in Graznyj Grad, because it made the post-torture escape a little easier
Your breakdown of the Ocelot Unit was awesome
Same with the Ocelot fight. I found it easiest to just hide behind the farthest away bunkers whenever Ocelot was shooting, and then I would take advantage while he reloaded with stun grenades or tranq shots the one time he left himself open
I don't think I ended up using the hornet nests while fighting the Pain. Tried a few times, but it never quite worked. I found it easier just to use nades and tranq shots. Simple enough
For the Fear, you may know this and object to it, based on your other comments, but in case this is news to you, there's actually a much easier way to take him out. Simply use a fake death pill, wait for him to approach and then turn around. Once he turns around, revive yourself and toss a stun grenade at his feet. Once it goes off, he'll be dazed for a few seconds, and all damage to him will be non-lethal, even usually lethal guns, so you can pull out the AK (or Patriot if you're on NG+) and take him out that way. The whole boss battle lasts less than a minute, and that's how I took care of him
The hardest part of the game to me used to be the Fury, and it was on this run as well. My strategy was to actually just hit him twice on the first attack, because he moves a lot faster after the third shot. This way, you can hit him twice at the beginning, and then get another relatively easy string of 3 shots afterwards, meaning you only need to get one more string of 3 to take him down, and that's what I eventually managed to do successfully
Can't believe I never knew the Cold War camo's effect and how much easier it made the escape scene. I was scared of that part coming in, but it turned out to be a cake walk
When playing the Boss, rather than relying on good timing with CQC, I instead just lie on the ground, use L2 and R2 to poke up, and then snipe her with the Mosin Nagant or Tranq her with the Mk22 while she searches for you from the cover of trees. You'll have to survive a few attacks from her either way, but this way makes most of the fight a breeze
And that was it! Here are my stats:
Extreme
Saves: 21
0 saves, alerts, and kills of course
Serious injuries: 7
Total damage: 1 life bar
0 life medicine of course
13 animals and plants captured
0 meals - FYI: I've seen pictures of people who got Foxhound with a few meals eaten, but I wanted to be sure, so I made good use of the healing radio. Used all frequencies except for one by the time I got the Fury, but thankfully didn't need to use any more after that

Oh yeah, and I see the final portion of this series had some negative comments due to your comments about the series' portrayal of women. I agree it went a little over the top in MGS4. Too bad you felt that way, and too bad it is that way. Still one of the best video games series ever, if not the best, in my opinion

Even though the game forces you into bottlenecks often, it's truly open-ended with regard to all the ways you can take care of it in between and during said bottlenecks. I never had the patience to get any good at any of the MGS games, but it's really fascinating to see what goes into making high level strategies, and getting some insight into the idiosyncrasies of the AI behaviour. You're right up there with Super Bunnyhop, Matthewmatosis and some other of those guys in my opinion. Your video library may be extremely cluttered, and to be honest, not many things interest me that much besides MGS3 Foxhound and TLOU Rootwork building, but whatever... that stuff is fucking brilliant. I don't know who people watch when they search for special MGS3 videos, but I know they should watch you. I just watched Super Bunnyhop's "no tranqualizer EE" run, and I wished he had taken my advice and watched your Foxhound rank series. This is why this must continue. Your MGS3 videos are amazing because of your understanding of the game. Your TLOU videos are amazing because of that AND the whole meta-discussion that you provoke. I love it.

Great video! I looked for a good Let's Play of MGS3 a while ago and it seemed that everyone was just killing all the guards, which didn't feel like the spirit of the game. I hope you continue the series!

Regarding getting more views... you are possibly correct! This really is a hobby, though, and I prefer not to stress over getting as many views as possible. I simply make these whenever I feel like it.

I don't want to play european extreme I just watch this because it's a nice guide on how to not suck at this game. I learn alot from it thanks! I'm still at the skill level where you keep accidently pressing x and thinking you can crouch walk but than you prone..stuff like that. Also pressing X instead of O I do that shit all the time. Playing on the OG ps2 and i'm loving the game, wish I played it as a kid I would have definitely loved it back than too but I don't know if I would have beaten it, it's kinda hard for me so me as a dumb kid who just free roamed on gta all the time wouldn't get far I bet.
I am working towards a no save run, and I had problems doing Dremuchij North (2) consistently. I found a faster and easier way through. Get the guards' attention as you normally do, but only slam the rear guard. Continue as usual and the remaining guard of the pair will not trigger a caution.
Sometimes both guards perceive you with blue exclamation points. In this case slam neither investigating guard. Faster and less interactive. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks.
If anyone is watching this for help getting a foxhound rank YOU CAN EAT MEALS. I was finally able to get foxhound rank after many years of attempts using this walkthrough but I thought it would be worth mentioning. I’m not sure if there’s a limit on how many meals you can eat or if it’s different on euro extreme but I got foxhound rank with 10 meals eaten on extreme difficulty, 3hrs 53mins, 21 saves, 5 serious injuries, and 1 life bars damage.

Why this is good! Do you think this is possible on the mgs 3d?
James, I love your vids. Quick question, do you have any tips for judging the distance Snake throws his magazines and various grenades? Or for example, the Ocelot crew, I have trouble hitting the inner edge of the doorway with the stun. What's the easiest way to line it up? Thank you
The easiest way actually isn't available yet: the Croc Cap points the snout down the center of the screen. Snake's gun in FPV also centers the iron sights, so you might raise the gun, get a sense for the direction you're facing, then switch to the grenade to throw it. As far as distance goes ... that's tough! I just kind of got a feel for it over time.
I can't really think of any standard to compare it to for general use. Fortunately, there are only two throw strengths: short and far. When you try a far throw, pay attention to Snake's location on the map after you throw. It will take some re-tries to get it right, but that should help figure out the best position. And, once you figure that out, you should be able to abstract that for other situations.

yes unfortunately it's a HUGE bug that konami apparently are unable to recreate in order to devise a patch, the lower difficulties and i believe normal (as i have completed these) are unaffected but hard and beyond are unplayable after the conveyor belt room bomb nutralisation stage, it's affected many people if not all for the European copy's of the game, i don't know where to look to find out if konami have fixed/will get off there asses to fix it. in other news your guides are the best ever.

For some reason i have to cqc slam both of them to make it past the third guard in time, am i doing something wrong leading up to that or can the timing be slighty different cause i have subsistence and the not hd remake or the original?

so if you're doing one for MGS2 then has the a patch been made for the game because i'm stuck at the part on normal or hard where i have to nutralize the bombs on the convayor belt where are NO boxes :( the same for thousands of people...

At 7:47 i was able to get 3 empty magazines..not trying to put you down or anything but how did that happen?
Okay so
I just finished the game on normal and it was not a challenge, but I didn't know you could use the d pad to stalk, every time I wanted to get close to and enemy for a hold up or something I would crawl up to their back then stand, because snakes lowest run speed with the stick still gets him heard way before he reached the guards. Fml I'm dumb.
