  • All My Cherry Shrimp Started Dying Within Hours! How To Diagnose & Prevent Mysterious Shrimp Deaths. All my cherry red neocaridina shrimp started to die within a few hours. The plecos, corydoras and medaka rice fish fry in the nano shrimp tank (5 gallons) were seemingly healthy and alive yet all of the sudden my shrimp started to drop dead and i had no idea why... this is how i stopped it.

    Sorry to hear what happened, on the bright side it’ll help a lot of people. Question for you, my new 20gal planted tank with eco complete substrate 40pounds of it and decent variety of plants and algae. It’s been a month now can i add new shrimp now? Ill most likely buy 5-10. My 2.5 gal has been cycled for few months now but it only had 2 mystery snails and lots of detritus worms in their fluval substrate no ammonia, nirites, and nitrates. I took one mystery snail out and put her in the 20 to help with algae which is all over everything. The bladder snail i got as a egg hitch hiker on some plants his shell is about a dime coin long. Also the ph last week was 7.6 i filled it with spring water with a ph of 7. Can i get some shrimp safely yet or should i wait longer? One other question i have a hang on the back filter on it currently I’ve been using to get rid of substrate particles and such but I’d like to remove it and swap it for a small sponge filter would that be a problem. Do you recommend a brand of sponge filters maybe a corner one I’d like it semi hideable or can those little box filters with the multiple media types be buried? All my medaka baby’s are still alive and getting so big they look like fish now so fun! They aren’t in a tank yet just a gallon tub. Sorry for the length again hope your doing well have a great day

    I thought of another thing. There are special pens that you can use to write on glass and porcelain. You "set" the paint by heating the glass in an ordinary kitchen oven. The paint can then tolerate hand washing. Those pens can be found in any arts and craft store. I had a look, and Michael's has a pen called Decoart Glass Paint Marker. There must be other brands too, in other stores. The key to look for is that the paint gets fixed to the glass in an oven.

    Completely different type of bottles might be a good alternative to labels. The labels should be for people who are visiting the fish-room. As the fish-keeper, we habituate to the labels and when we least expect it, these sorts of mistakes happen. Recently, I had a neocaridina jump the filter guard and get into the return pump chamber; he appeared in the main display split in two. It never feels good losing livestock.

    I recently bought 2 Orange shrimp, and added them to my tank just to test out how would they do. They were fine, so after a week I got 6 more. Right after adding these, all started swimming eratticaly and sinking down lifelessly. They kept doing this and all of them died within an hour. I was trying to find out what happened, but unfortunatelly I still have no idea. This was my first time keeping shrimp, but I did my research so I thought I was ready. Now, I'm scared to try again because it was horrific to watch them die with basically nothing I could do.

      Well start with one or two for a few days, then add more next time. Also doing all the water testing and getting a kh/gh as well as tds test kit Is valuable. Nitrates are a very common killer of shrimp, as I'd having a tds of like 400ppm and or ph over 7.5 or 8. Best of luck next time, just live and learn...try to gather all the info you can . Cheers to you for lookin into it more, here though.

    I'm setting up a 5 gal shrimp tank (would have went bigger but already had the tank). My lfs sold me a bag of fluval stratum, I knew it would buffer my water. My tap is around 7.8 ph. I was hoping the fluval would get it around 7. Three weeks into fishless cycle and my ph is reading around 6.6. I was gonna start with plain cherry's. A lot of people say that may be low for neocardina, do you think I will have lots of problems trying to use this substrate or should I ditch it for inert substrate? Thanks!

    • @tacobob891
      @tacobob891 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another question, if I do use the stratum, when the buffering effects start to wear off, will I need to redo the substrate? Or will the shrimp adapt as the ph slowly rises due to the buffering properties wearing off?

    Well after getting some Seachem alkaline buffer and going to the Seachem dosage calculator and almost following their directions. I used a 1/4 of their recommended dosage and my PH/KH numbers are off the charts 9.0 PH and 240 mgl of K/H TDS was over 700. A later and 2 water chages later my TDS is 299 PH IS 8.5 and the k/h is still high. If someone sees this please do me a favor and go to the Seachem dose chart fot the Alkaline buffer and enter this data for a 10 gallon tank. See what it tells you on how much to raise the KH from 40 mgl to 100mgl and enter what it tells you to add in a reply to this conversation.

I entered the data for a 10 gallon tank and what my KH was and then what I wanted it to get to. It said 24 teaspoons, that didn't sound right at all. I put in about 5 and when I checked my parameters after about an hour everything was off the charts. 9 + ph and my KH was at least 240 and my TDS was over 700. Seachem's calculator is way off. Did a partial was change and at lease the TDS came down to around 550. I'm going to do another water change today. It looks like I lost some cherry shrimp but there are others still alive.

  • @fatrat6929
    @fatrat6929 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dude , cherry shrimps ( neocaridina ) should be kept in 6.8 -7.7 Ph without any tannins . Your nitrates level is also shocking (40 ppm), must be close to 0 ppm as possible. Catapa leaves are used when keeping caridina shrimps .

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not true at all...it all depends on your tap water, your food...the other Inhabitants, on and on... i have had shrimp for nearly 2 decades off and on (since the year cherries hit the market in 2003)
      They can be in a ph of 6.5 -8 .... 7.2 is probably ideal. Temp...70 to 74 is ideal but they survive from near freezing to 86 or so as long as it is gradual.
      As for almond leaves... no shrimp dont need tannins..but it does grow biofilm, which they do need for babies and healthy immune systems. The tannin water isnt for the shrimp... its for my fry in the tank, but its nuetral enough (6.2) compared to most tannin concentrates or black watee additives. However the biofilm living on the actual leaves is crucial for new shrimplettes.
      Secondarily the liquid tannins are like liquid food for biofilm bacteria and my unique mix is countered by the crushed coral and shells in the substrate i also make, which raises the tds and ph... also if you paid attention, my nitrates were about 5 to 10...those test tubes were an hour old and if you keep fish, you know they get darker and darker and then fade out depending on the reagent test. However- ive had neocaridina survive in up to 100ppm nitrates if done slowly...i was shocked but they can survive amazing conditions.
      Now babaulti, atyopsis, and caridina (other than gold nebula and malawa) are a totally different story
