    There is so much conflicting information about GH and shrimp on the internet. I’ve seen in several places people say that hardness doesn’t matter, but then so many of my shrimp had molting problems in my soft water. I appreciate you making these entertaining and well researched videos.

      @devinigh89 Thanks for taking the time to leave a kind comment! I'm glad you found the information helpful :)
      So, to some degree, the statement "hardness (GH) doesn't matter" is true. I've kept neos anywhere from 2-30 dGH and their colony has grown, although some of the adults slowly died off at the higher GH levels. The ratio of Ca:Mg was the same in every tank though, because I used the same remineralizer for each one. As such, I believe the ratio is much more important than the GH. It's unfortunately not as easy to measure the mineral ratio in a tank but I've tried to simplify things as much as possible through the calculator on the website.
      I hope your molting problems get solved soon! Lmk if you have any questions and happy shrimpin'

      Thanks for replying! I'm planning on buying the calcium test today so I can find the ratio. Crushed coral seems to have helped with some successful molts, but I still lost one with the ring of death last week.

      Which kit are you referring to? If it's GH, then yeah, we'd always recommend that shrimp keepers have a GH kit on hand. If it's the calcium kit, that's really only needed if you find your shrimp having molting problems or if you want to be really careful about tap water.
      Are you just starting with shrimp or have you been keeping them for a while?

    • @Glenn_AE6YT
      @Glenn_AE6YT 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm just starting with shrimp, and I don't think they ua. I'm a retired chemist and I rather enjoy running the wet tests, so adding another is no burden at all. Every week I run pH, kH, and gH, and usually add the Nitrogen tests: NH3, NO2-, and NO3-. I've started checking Cu, and run my tap water every few weeks, also testing for PO4+. I enjoy running the tests and calculating how much of my hard tap water mixed with RO water to get the desired water hardness and pH. @@shrimplyexplained

    Can we get a video on scuds? I saw one in my new tank the other day and everyone says it will be a death sentence for my shrimp. But a few people online say they have scuds and shrimp together and it’s been fine.

    • @shrimplyexplained
      @shrimplyexplained  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @pumpkincoffee983 Thanks for the video idea! We have never actually dealt with scuds in our tanks so the best information we have is secondhand from breeders like the Garden of Eder. They say that scuds are not harmful to adult shrimp but will outcompete babies for food and fully grown scuds may eat babies, as well. There are shrimp tanks that are relatively successful with scuds, but we suspect they would be more successful without them.

    My tap water. Gh 7, kh 3, tds 175. Should be perfect for neocaridina right?

    • @shrimplyexplained
      @shrimplyexplained  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It'll probably work but, as explained in the video, GH is made of mainly calcium and magnesium and they need to be at the right ratio (a relatively wide range) for shrimp to molt properly. A lot of tap water has a healthy ratio but some tap water doesn't and may need to be supplemented if you find your shrimp having molting problems. That's what the second part of the video is all about.

    • @shrimplyexplained
      @shrimplyexplained  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ty8012 I totally agree. There are a bunch of great videos out there that explain general concepts but ever since starting the hobby I've been frustrated by how little data is actually backing many of the assumptions we have. Like what actually are the GH ranges Neocaridina can survive in? How sensitive are they really to temperature or pH changes? Do they really change color on different substrates or is it an effect of the light? (A paper shows they do actually change color)
      Are there any shirmp questions you'd really like to have answered? I'd love to hear and discuss them!

      @@shrimplyexplainedit's a big problem across the aquatics hobby as a whole, fishkeeping too. So very many people (and sadly so many AI articles written with zero actual understanding) repeating what they've heard, but it's *so hard* to find actual studies. It results in a lot of information that's either flatly wrong, or perhaps more often correct... Sometimes. In some contexts. For people who are still confused. Metals=higher pH. Acids=lower pH. gh will rise as pH does and vice versa. You want more metals for shrimp tanks but not too much.

    • @shrimplyexplained
      @shrimplyexplained  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @michaelberardo4614, it appears there may be some confusion. Metals do not always raise or lower pH. That entirely depends on how they oxidize in water, which can be difficult to determine. Some metal ions like calcium and magnesium do affect GH but most do not.
      GH also does not have an effect on pH. It is an easy mistake to make as GH and KH are so similar, but KH is the parameter that controls pH. Higher KH leads to higher pH and vice versa.
      Please let me know if you have any questions!

    • @michaelberardo4614
      @michaelberardo4614 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@shrimplyexplained well in this context actually calcium and magnesium. The 2 most common minerals in water both turn H+ into Mg(OH)2 this will create bonds with stray H+ ions which in turn will raise the pH. And generally GH will
      Measure calcium and magnesium. So if you start adding magnesium and calcium in the water, yes it will raise pH. While your right not all metals will create atomic bonds and create hydroxide. Group 2 elements typically will, and some group 1 elements on some occasions. So yes in this case GH will affect the pH to a degree.
