    Honestly when it comes to neos , set up a planted tank. Dirt, gravel , sand cap… plants … three years running with no issues. I am actually gunna reset this 2.5 soon just because i think its time. Other wise that tank is bulletproof and never have any issues with any dirted planted tank. ❤ cheers mark

    Thanks for letting us know things die. It was a humbling reminder we aren't born knowing that. Statistically likely you told some people for the first time.

    I just brought home 12 cherry shrimp for my new shrimp only tank. Cycled for 6 weeks, live plants are established and water parameters look good with test results. Wish me luck 😂 the person I bought them from said they are really hardy and he doesn’t do much with water additives, and they do great. Since these are my first shrimp, I am being very fanatical with testing and ensuring everything is as it should be , but sometimes I think I fuss too much and it could be detrimental…time will tell 🤞

    Hi Mark! Hi comment section! Got a question for you all.
    About two weeks ago I bought 20 Red Pinto. During the first few days everything went just fine, then all of a sudden I had 2 deaths, 2 days in a row. (five more days passed and no more deaths, for now)
    The tank is cicled and mature - was used to grow out some apistogramma fry, and it has been running for around 1,5 years.
    Soil is ADA Amazonia, and i use RO water with Salty Shrimp GH+.
    The shrimp don't accept any food (5 different types, 3 different brands) and although I see them scavenging all around they don't seem as active as my Neos (that i have on another tank).
    My parameters are:
    pH: 5 (too low i guess, the breeder had them on pH 6, but my RO water comes out at pH5, TDS: 0)
    kH:0
    gH: 5/6
    Ammonia, Nitrite: 0
    Nitrate:

    hello Marc, great videos. Thank you, you told him in almost every video that you shouldn't do such large water changes. This is not good for the shrimp. What is really a big water change or a small water change?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      I wouldnt do these large water changes frequntly, but once every few months probably is benificial.

      You are my role model, that's why I always changed a little water and when I saw this video today I was really surprised why you suddenly said something like you said. I do a 10% water change every two weeks, that's enough, or Mark I'm really scared right now what are my shrimp dying?

    good morning Mark, last week I started a 10g walstad that I am going to be working on cycling/building biofilm for the next month or so using media and seeded sponge filters from my 29g. I love your videos they are great advise, however I have a question: I live near a beach and I was planning to go and collect seashells and dead coral to use on my 10g tank, do you think it will help my future neocaridina shrimp?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      Hello Helzig, yes you can use that stuff but I would soak it in freshwater for a little while to get any salt in it out, good luck with your project. 😀

    Could my moss be killing my shrimp ? I bought some moss from my local aquarium about 2 weeks ago. Just a few days ago I found one of my neocaridina shrimp hanging in it lifeless. Today another one is hanging there-not completely lifeless, her legs are still moving around but I tried poking the moss to get her to move around and she’s just refusing to leave it so I feel like she might be close to dying. Could there be something wrong with the moss that’s killing them?
    I checked the pH and GH this morning and both were normal. All my other shrimp are acting normal. Unfortunately I don’t have an ammonia ammonium right now. Thank you Mark! Your videos are very helpful.

    • @redskyblueheart

      Seems your advice may be that I should try a big water change?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      yes it could be the moss, if you have other pets like cats and dogs any treatments added to them can affect shrimp also if you stick your hands in the tank after clapping them. Things like tick drops will wipe out a tank, so always make sure you wash your hands and scrub your nails before you doing anything with the shrimp. if it is this you can run active charcoal in a small mesh bag near a filter and that will take out any medication.

    Hi! What do you think about using organic plant soil whitout fertilizer topped with sand ? I have neos and a couple of shrimps snails and plants

    • @zZGoldenBoyZz

      I don't think he uses the Walstad method but I have a 5 gallon Walstad planted tank with organic potting soil and a sand cap layer. I've had it up and running for a couple of months now and I have ember tetras, nerite snail, and yellow and orange neocardina shrimp in it. They have been thriving and the plants have been flourishing as well. This tank out of all my others is the best when it comes to survival.

    What soil keeps low pH?

    • @nabokovfan87

      Active substrate would be anything like aquarium soil substrate. Controsoil, Amazonia, stratum, Akadama, etc.

    Hi Mark, greetings from Germany, I was wondering if you would recommend RO water for neocaridinas as well? I was trying to breed them I tabwater and was successful with that - I do have quite often babys, however the adults aren’t moving often and are a little bit lethargic. I assume it’s the water

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      it could be feeding, do a decent sized water change and dont feed them for a week or two and see how they get on.

    • @Deus.314

      @@MarksShrimpTanks so you don’t think RO water is necessary in the first place? Thx for the reply btw :)

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      that just depends on your tap, everyones is different so I cant say one way or the other what is better. To take all the risk out of it switching to RO is a smart move.

  • @nabokovfan87

    For Neocaridina, I would replace (or add to) step 1: Check your KH and GH! Then you can proceed with step 2.
    For Caridina, its also applicable, soil stops working, KH rises a little bit. Increasing PH. There shouldn't be much of any KH in the Caridina tanks. GH is also applicable as being "off" can cause deaths.

    Do you warm up the water to the right temperature before doing a drastic water change ? Is there Shrimp in the tank that you are doing the water change ?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      I let the water sit circulating at room temperature for a few days before I do any water changes and yes there are shrimp in the tanks when I do the odd big water change, remeber this isnt something you do all the time. once every few months type of deal.

  • @forteanfish

    Strangely I can keep Crystal Red Caridina, but for the life of me I cannot keep neocaridina alive. I've used my tap, Bee shrimp conditions, and experimented with others, but they always die. Meanwhile my crystal reds are super productive.
