I'm sure this isn't your first one ;) and you're already aware. If so, disregard. I've done a couple with the walbro wt-215. Not sure if your carb is the same, but with the walbro there are two pulse ports in the carb face. There's a brass plug in one of ports in the carb face. It blocks the pulse port that lines up with the ms170 intake boot. The last one I did, I forgot to pop the brass plug out of the pulse port on the carb and plug the other open pulse port (with jb weld) that's used on other saws. It ran, but did exactly what you describe when coming off throttle. I chased it around for a while (seemed like an air leak) then I remembered. Maybe coincidence, maybe not. Thought I'd throw it out there. They definitely turn into a different saw with the fully adjustable carb for sure. Thanks for sharing!
P.s. that dang little insert for the intake has got me before too!

Impressive, chainsaw/heart/neurosurgeon, all in one. Amazing Mr. Bellhopper, the things you accomplish. Interesting and very well done!!! Nick, North West Farmer

Glad to see you're hale and hearty. Didn't know a saw could be converted to different mix ratio.

Congratulation on the 3k, I fixed the starter paw on a 180 yesterday and when the guy came to pick it up he gave me a 10-10E for fixing it. Left me smiling ear to ear 👍

I have the same saw... and had similar issues with it bogging like that, the screen behind the muffler cover was plugged with soot, I've seen a few 170s with this issue now...

Just did one a few minutes ago, I don't change the top off carb , I just block thar air hole in box , also I use a screw in throttle trigger to get carb to wide open throttle, also I install the good tank vent , those one way vents are junk , also a little timing add helps them.
I did one to keep in my truck and ranger , handy little saws after that

I just picked up a MS 170 and it was a dog in stock form. I decided to work on it a bit so this is what I did
    Muffler Mod
    Timing Advance
    Widened exhaust port
    Ported intake skirt of piston
Carb Mod/ Adjusted fuel lever to up fuel pressure
World of difference and am a happy camper now

I’m really struggling trying to adapt a MAC SP81 from the fixed jet sdc carb to something fully adjustable I would also like to get a tillitson and I’m looking to get the correct model that will fit and run right do you know what would be the best for the application?

Those MS Series Saws In The Smaller Sizes Are Aggravating And Don't Want To Run Or Run Right At All,, If The Small Hole Isn't Covered On Carburetor Air Intake Plastic Housing, It Was Made Perfect For A ThumbTo Cover Though, LOL
