The vent diaphragm is probably not necessary at all, but the way the filter base is set up it will suck saw dust in that little area. I had to plug that hole off with something so I just use the vented cover.
@@JKSawShop yes. I haven't bought one yet because I didn't know what the tube on top was that goes to the air filter. All the adjustable ones lack that
I like the top cover vents on those. JUST MAKES SCENSE .!! I have 025 on the bench and it doesn’t have the summer shield I’ll tell you what that air chamber pressurized like something else. I honestly think it’s messing with these Chinese carbs.
@@JKSawShop yea my buddy got this saw and someone replaced the carb already. So I have two sitting here. I am going to make a winter summer door for this and give it better breathing capability I think the positive pressure is hurting the saw .!!!
@@JKSawShop ❤️🔥🦾💪🏻☀️I made the same observation on the 42cc homelite. Cut a hole rite over the filter and added a screen. The homelite said thank you very much. I hope this helps.
@@JKSawShop did you have a chance to do that and how did you make out? I've got 6 MS170's with Zama (1 adjustment screw) sitting on the shelf that won't run off idle and I've heard the Walbro carb with 2 screws fix the problem. But are they worth doing?
Watching all these chainsaw videos I fell like in need to tear apart one of Tazmans saws and try to put it back together 😂 Just kidding he would probably kill me
Bless you JK for all you do for us:)
That’s a great upgrade! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Gonna have to do another vid on it now
Do they make one with a primer bulb? My only issue is priming after refueling.
I don’t think so but it would take a completely different carb setup
Good lil saws my dad had 1.
Maybe i missed it but the impulse line on the 170 is different. You need to pop out the brass plug on the new carb
That carburetor is for a 017/018
Where did you buy the carburetor.. from stihl
I think I just ordered an adjustable carb for a 017 from eBay
What carb did you use ? Im rebuilding one at the moment bearings failed so buying Chinese ebay motor and adjustable carb
@@gearsandtears7643 I used an eBay one also, but for a 017/018 not the 170/180.
What carb are you using in this video?
It was aftermarket carb for a Stihl 017/018
Nice swap... congrats on 300 subs🎉🥳
I seen that today, I am amazed at the support I have gotten here. Thank you Aaron.
@@JKSawShop yes sir🤙🏻🪓🪓😎
Is the vented diaphragm cover necessary? I did this upgrade on my saw with a ported muffler and advanced timing.

Hi what name is on the carb you put on this ms 170 chainsaw
It is a generic one for a 017
I found it alot easier to pop the plate off the trigger housing and pull off the trigger spring then the trigger.
It would be easier for sure
I have a litter 180c this needs done to. That single jet carb is the worst thing Stihl ever did! 😆
Pretty much made them a throw away saw in my opinion.
Doug if they have Zama carbs try installing the "clear" pump diaphragm instead of the black rubber-like one.
I have 2 of them 170's from 2005 and 2006 and they both still run fine on the fixed settings. I'm gonna tune them up so I need the adjustable one now.
@MF175mp I think I’ve already answered that in comment to you on another video
@@JKSawShop yes. I haven't bought one yet because I didn't know what the tube on top was that goes to the air filter. All the adjustable ones lack that
Well done 👍
It’s better than the fixed jet carbs

Sometimes I’ve had good luck and sometimes I’ve had horrible luck with the Chinese carbs.

I was recently told you can use an ms250 carburetor on the 170s. Is that true?
I have not tried that yet, but I will look into that I do have a 180 sitting around and a couple of O25 carburetors.

Good
It worked, just had to do a little modification. Easy to convert though.
That saw needed a good clean before doing this job!
I had to back up and punt it did have bad bearings

On stihl ms 170 cant go adjustdable carb. You just break the law of the stihl
017/018 had adjustable carbs, I think that was the downfall of stihl after the went away from that
