Hi Andrew. For around the house and smaller job this saw is fantastic. I use the 170's a lot after i cut down a tree and use it to limb with. Its a lot lighter than my other saws and does a great job. Its probably lighter than your 026av
Was literally popping the choke lever off my 250C today thinking “it would suck if that little hook broke off”. Pry straight up and push straight down = good to go. Then TH-cam recommends this video😂
The BEST 'modification' one can make to the MS-170 is to trash the .043 bar and chain that the saw comes with. Putting on a 14" bar, with an .050 groove and the compatible chain made a whole different saw out of it. For what the little saw is designed, and sold for, there is NO need for the other add-ons.
Hey thanks for watching. Ive always been a fan of the side chain adjuster over the ft adjuster. I believe the OEM kit was around $15 on amazon. The dogs are gonna help this little saw perform alot better.
I use a dry film lube on my saw bearings, goes on wet and dries it becomes a film, it is lube but wont attract dirt. Grease the base the of the air filter toi kewep micro dust from being sucked in. A 14 inch non safety bar and chain seems about perfect of these little saws. The metal dawg proctects the frint of the oil tank.
Thanks for watching. Yes sir i have used a spray graphite before and it works great. I am currently out of it. I havent thought of greasing the base of the air filter. Thats a good idea im going to do that. The little dogs i didnt even think about them protecting the tank. Another good reason to install them. The plastic dogs make me scratch my head. The steel ones will help this little saw out a ton. Ive really been looking forward to the side chain adjuster. I think for OEM parts it cost me right at $15 on amazon. These saws are great for small projects and limbing. The other saw's i have just get too heavy after awhile.
Im waiting on the teeth to come today did the chain adjuster works well . Going to install the high volume oil pump next token the chain and bar from wearing out to soon. I still remember the manual oil pump on MY XL12. Homelite. never wore out a bar..
Hi Red Tail. The felling dogs really help these little saw's grip. I'm a firm believer that too much oil is way better than not enough. Sounds like that little saw in going to be in a lot better shape than when you got it.

I show the packaging at the 5:29 sec mark. there is also a link in the description to this kit on amazon. Thanks for watching and commenting
I like the ms170. I think it is a good performing saw for the money and weight. They get a lot of criticism but I suspect it may very well be from the same people that don’t recognize the purpose and value in a battery powered tool as well. I find that many tools excel in one area but not another. Not every saw needs be 70cc or 90cc. 😂
Joe i totally agree. For years we used our MS310, 290, 041 and 08 for cutting and limbing. When we 1st got the MS170 I picked it up to see the weight difference i thought if this thing cuts decent this will help a ton for doing limb work. It works great for those smaller tasks. Currently i think those saws are $199 i believe ours was around $150 when we got it. For the money its a great value. Both of these upgrades i believe cost me around $25. I feel that for the upgrades it was money well spent. Thanks for the comment and stay warm

If you were buying new, would you buy a 170 and do these upgrades or buy a different model with upgrades already done. And if so, which model? I’m looking for a new good homeowner chainsaw is why I’m asking.
Hi PJ. I honestly think eaither saw would make a great homeowner saw. I'm in a different situation since I already have a 170 i would buy a 170 just because if I needed to I could keep the same parts for those saws. Idk how much the parts are different for the 180's. I have honestly never ran a ms180 but I know alot of people like them. Alot of people like the 170's. To me this ms 170 has cut things I shouldn't have used it on. The 170 I own works great and has cut a ton of wood. I like using it over my other saw's because it is so light and it's always been reliable for me.

I'd consider the use of grease inadvisable in such a dirty application as a chain saw. It will tend to capture and retain all manner of grit and abrasives. And certainly there's enough oil flying around anyway, so that no additional lubrication is even needed. Maybe that's recommended by Stihl, but seems inadvisable to me.
Hi Lynnlard. I believe you are correct it is not the best. Its a good idea to clean & inspect it regularly. It does need some lubrication on it however. Hey Thank you JunkyardWheeling. These little saws are great for tossing in a vehicle when trail riding or having at the ready for smaller tasks around the farm. They do a really good job
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead yeah exactly! And with a 16 inch bar you can do most anything with some thinking and skill. A little bit of cheap mods and they run like a 39cc easily.
That sounds like something we should do. Mr. Tim, your big saw is way bigger than my biggest saw...... for now, lol. We might have to do a tiny saw challenge, lol
Great video. The music was to loud and annoying for a learning video. I had to fast forward through it. There was nothing wrong with just hearing your voice.
I have a MS180 and i did the SIMPLE Big tooth conversion by changing out the bar and chain to the Next size up without WITHOUT any modifications. This give you a MUCH better cutting saw. And the chain is MUCH more beefy and to me Easier to sharpen. The saw REALLY comes to life and cuts well AFTER this modification. STIHL OE parts even say it FITS so before you say it NOT intended to use that size you are WRONG. On the package for the BAR and Chain it CLEARLY says Fits MS180. Why would Stihl put that it fits on the package if you cant use it. The Pico chain shit is garbage... And it belongs there.
Thanks for watching. I've had this saw for years id have to check but I'm thinking we did put the bigger sprocket and chain on it. Maybe that was on the other saws. If not I'll be doing that upgrade as well. I like bigger chains. Thank you
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Like I said you dont need to change the sprocket. You swap the bar and chain only. if you are interested i could get you Stihl part numbers for OE parts.

Agreed. I usually grab this saw when I top a tree just because it's alot lighter to carry around than my other saws.
Should I go with a 170 or a 180 like others have in the comments?
I think eaither would be a great saw.
Good content, good tunes great instruction, amazing filming - I love this channel. Folks, you need to subscribe to this channel! Keep cuttin' Mike!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Travis. This little saw is a very handy tool to have around
I think me and the boys want to challenge you to a time saw off 18" to 20" diameter chunk. Big saw challenge?
That sounds like something we should do. Mr. Tim, your big saw is way bigger than my biggest saw...... for now, lol.
We might have to do a tiny saw challenge, lol
30cc challenge?
Still won't oil through
Thanks for watching. I haven't had any issues with oiling. Wonder what's causing your issues
First thing you need to up grade are your tools. Not very convincing you know what your doing if you have to use an Allen wrench style torx.
I think I'm doing fine on tools. Thanks for watching.
@@TheRustyGarageandHomesteadhe’s right, then you need to learn to turn more than a 1/4 each time…
@@dw3901 thank you. Makes so much more sense now
Great video. The music was to loud and annoying for a learning video. I had to fast forward through it. There was nothing wrong with just hearing your voice.
Hey thanks for watching and commenting. I just went in and pulled the music down as far as i could. Hope that helps.
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Thank you for understanding.
Yes sir ill take em and compare them to what i have. I dont remember what all we did to this saw if anything when we got it. i know our other saws we have changed stuff but dont remember on this one for sure. The MS 170 cost right at $150 new when we got it. There $199 now so however long ago thats been. Thank you@@LiveFreeOrRIP
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead here is the Part number for the BAR. On the bar it clearly says ms170 ms180. This bar is for an .050ga just search this part number and you will know what chain you need. You will NOT need to replace your sprocket.
Stihl # 3005 000 4813 YE
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Our Local Stihl dealer will sell MS180s With this bar and chain on the saw already. You can also take the part number directly to your Stihl dealer to see if they have the Bar and chain In stock. I would bet they do. IF the guy says something dumb like it wont cut well or its NOT designed to use that.. On the package it says fits 170 180 and 10 OTHER saws. He might reply well because you can dont mean you should... HAVE common sense its not a 70cc saw. I have used mine plenty of times at this point and it preforms awesome. I also opened up my exhaust with a screw flat screwdriver a touch just bend them open more and remove the spark arrestor that gets clogged up. Keep her sharp and you are in for a NEW saw. The saw handles it Awesome. You dont need a 251. My ms180 is a awesome little saw.
I hear bluegrass and can’t make out what you’re saying.
Thanks for watching. Sorry about that I tried to make sure the music was turned down low. I need to get a new mic that would probably help
For the cost of your "upgrades" you should've just bought an MS180 or MS210. You'd have been much further ahead for the same cost, and NO bother.
@notmyname3883 you could. If you already own the 170 then this is cheap upgrades and it's not really a bother. Very simple to do these upgrades.
This guy owed me $100 bucks so he gave me this chainsaw instead. I appreciate these upgrades because in the end the chainsaw really didn't cost me anything. I actually wasn't expecting to get paid back haha.
Hey Jared. Free running chainsaws are always great.
Saw are going to ruin the world
