    l have already purchased 2 ms 180s for $299au with carry case and spare chain. Beware one struggling dealer refused to provide carry case as "his margins were to thin. Second and subsequent purchases made with a much better Stihl dealer. I have completed these upgrades for $22 au. l am planning to go to the 18inch bar (rare) on the second chainsaw.
    4 years later and l haven't worn out the first one yet after 8 new chains and one new bar. Brilliant machine has completed over 500 hours work. Not quiet the disposable cheap purchase l was expecting.

      Hi Patrick. These saws the 170's/180's are great little lightweight saw's. As long as you take care of them "and it sounds like you are" these saw's should last a lifetime.

    I got a 14" bar and bigger chain for my MS180, sooo much better, and bolts straight on, no sprocket change. Ive done your suggested mods already, they make the saw much nicer to use. Mine runs very rich, so the spark arrestor will be the next thing to go. Great vid!

      Yea i did the same thing!!! and its a NEW SAW!!! I love that thing. NO it wont blast up a 22 oak its not meant for that... You dont take a tack hammer and drive in HUGE spikes right? NO. But for smaller work its inane. Limbs smaller trees its awesome. Thank you for posting this some other guy said DONT do that... I use a dry film lube on my saw bearings,goes on wet and dries it becomes a film, it is lube but wont attract dirt. Grease the base the of the air filter toi kewep micro dust from being sucked in. A 14 inch non safety bar and chain seems about perfect of these little saws. The metal dawg proctects the frint of the oil tank.

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead
      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching. Yes sir i have used a spray graphite before and it works great. I am currently out of it. I havent thought of greasing the base of the air filter. Thats a good idea im going to do that. The little dogs i didnt even think about them protecting the tank. Another good reason to install them. The plastic dogs make me scratch my head. The steel ones will help this little saw out a ton. Ive really been looking forward to the side chain adjuster. I think for OEM parts it cost me right at $15 on amazon. These saws are great for small projects and limbing. The other saw's i have just get too heavy after awhile.

    I like the ms170. I think it is a good performing saw for the money and weight. They get a lot of criticism but I suspect it may very well be from the same people that don’t recognize the purpose and value in a battery powered tool as well. I find that many tools excel in one area but not another. Not every saw needs be 70cc or 90cc. 😂

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead
      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Joe i totally agree. For years we used our MS310, 290, 041 and 08 for cutting and limbing. When we 1st got the MS170 I picked it up to see the weight difference i thought if this thing cuts decent this will help a ton for doing limb work. It works great for those smaller tasks. Currently i think those saws are $199 i believe ours was around $150 when we got it. For the money its a great value. Both of these upgrades i believe cost me around $25. I feel that for the upgrades it was money well spent. Thanks for the comment and stay warm

    Young man I'll have a 251C only use it for campfire cooking and to stay warm at night! My question is should i run the saw on 40/1 for better lubrication like people say on TH-cam or just follow Stihls advice and run it on 50/1 ??? Also does the carburettor needs to be adjusted since it runs more rich on oil or just leave it the way it is ???
    I'll sincerely thank you in advance Gunter

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead
      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Gunter Becker. My honest opinion is it is just fine at 40:1. The carb may need tuned slightly for the 40:1. I'm sure it was tuned at 50:1. 50:1 would be ok as well if you run good oil. I would just personally steer clear of the stihl silver bottle.

    I'd consider the use of grease inadvisable in such a dirty application as a chain saw. It will tend to capture and retain all manner of grit and abrasives. And certainly there's enough oil flying around anyway, so that no additional lubrication is even needed.
    Maybe that's recommended by Stihl, but seems inadvisable to me.

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead
      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Lynnlard. I believe you are correct it is not the best. Its a good idea to clean & inspect it regularly. It does need some lubrication on it however. That brg will get very dry and spinning at 14k RPM's I've seen the ends of the crank wear down from a dry Brg.
      I did not have any in this video but the use of a dry graphite lubricant is what I would normally like to run.

    I have a MS180 and i did the SIMPLE Big tooth conversion by changing out the bar and chain to the Next size up without WITHOUT any modifications. This give you a MUCH better cutting saw. And the chain is MUCH more beefy and to me Easier to sharpen. The saw REALLY comes to life and cuts well AFTER this modification. STIHL OE parts even say it FITS so before you say it NOT intended to use that size you are WRONG. On the package for the BAR and Chain it CLEARLY says Fits MS180. Why would Stihl put that it fits on the package if you cant use it. The Pico chain shit is garbage... And it belongs there.
