      You can do that with any smartphone "Do Not Disturb" feature. But you are not going to receive any calls from the courier delivering your package, or your bank telling you your card has been blocked, or your doctors reception telling you what test results came in, and so on...

    • @1drhnsd1
      @1drhnsd1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You can sort of do that - set your default ringtone to "no ring." If you don't have that option, find a "silent" ringtone and download it for your phone - make it the default. Now go into your contacts and manually assign a normal ringtone for them. That's what I did. Unwanted callers can still leave voicemail - but at least they can't make your phone ring (I use an iphone).

    So... your steps are.
    1. Download an app that claims to stop robocalls while it actively sells your number to said robocallers.
    2. Put your number on a list which is the other best resource that spam callers can use. How convenient that we all put our number on a single list for these people.
    3. Ask your carrier if you can pay more money for them to do a service they should be doing for free.

      Corey Kinard just register for true caller with some weird name and watch the telemarketing commence. Some of them would you kind enough to address you by the pseudonym that you used to register for truecaller and truecaller alone. That's how you know they are selling your data, or at the very least, have some sort of undiscovered data leak (which I find is very unlikely to go on for as long as it did, without them wising up to it)

    • @ralphlati4078
      @ralphlati4078 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Which is why I stopped downloading third party apps whereever possible. On MIUI most of these features are built in. Especially things like call blocking. MIUI has this super advanced feature they call "Yellow Pages" that let's you flag robocallers and scammers. All these blocked calls get registered onto the Yellow Pages and get autoblocked for everybody on the OS. I went from getting dozens of these calls a day to maybe a couple a month which I immediately block so me and all my fellow MIUI users can't be bothered by them twice.

    The problem I find is that I have been receiving calls (which I don't answer) and they happen to have almost the same number as mine. The first 6 digits are the same as my phone number. I can go ahead and block the number, but what good is it if I need to receive an actual call from someone locally. Obviously the robocaller is spoofing the number to make it seem familiar so that I answer it.

      I am having the exact same problem and have been ever since I got this number a few months ago. I used to only have like 6 numbers blocked in 10 years when I had my old number but, I looked at the list yesterday and I am now at 45. Registering on the do not call list has done nothing. Since I am new to where I live, I always answer my phone when it’s in my area just in case it’s something important but, I’m gonna have them send a voicemail instead from now on. Also, after about two weeks using the same 6 digits, they changed one number on it.

      Same here. I got a call from my own number once too! Obviously blocking can't help with this. How are the spammers technically doing this? It seems to have just started a few years ago. Can't the phone companies stop phone number spoofing? It seems like it should be easy. I don't remember phone number spoofing being a problem in the past.

    Google's beta phone app for Android now has this feature built in natively. You just check an option that says "Filter suspected spam calls" and it will no longer allow spam calls to ring your phone. They still show up in call history as a missed call though so you can see how much it's happening, and unblock numbers that should not have been marked as spam.

  • @AnonymousFreakYT
    @AnonymousFreakYT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not only are the fake calls spoofing area codes, they're spoofing your *prefix* as well (the second group of three digits, which, in the days before computer-controlled phone back-ends, identified the exact telephone company local office your phone connected to) so it looks *VERY* local.
    Funny thing is, I know nobody with my same area code _and_ prefix. Makes it *REALLY* easy to just ignore those calls.

      @ralphlati4078 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is becoming harder and harder to trust third party apps to do things like this because they might be taking your data and selling it off to make their profits. Even Google itself was caught doing that. That's why I switched to MIUI. The same kind of feature as TruCaller is built into the OS and they have an advanced call list feature where anybody on MIUI that flags a number as spam or something will send it to the list and get it blocked for everybody else on MIUI. I went from getting dozens of these calls a day to only a couple a month.

    FYI in the UK there is a service called TPS (Telephone Preference Service) which I think is the UK equivalent of the National Do not Call Registry.
    www.tpsonline.org.uk
    Once TPS have your number in their database it effectively prevents anyone from calling your number anymore for spam, marketing etc.
    Once added it may take 28 days for your number to properly be opted out
    Some numbers may come through, if they do then you can report the number/company and if TPS receive enough complaints, the company can be pursued and fined quite heavily if found guilty.

    What if we by default blocked ALL incoming calls. The only calls that would actually ring on our phones would be the ones we have pre-selected. This would take a little work but no more than handling spam calls now. Friends/schools/companies could just define a number that they will use to call with. If we wanted to receive a call from them we would just setup that number in our phone. For instance, our kid's school number, or the pharmacy we get our prescriptions filled at, we would pre-select those numbers to go through. Then, anytime we get a call we know it is from someone we want calling us. If everyone did this, it would essentilly end spam calls. The key would be getting everyone on board with presenting a specific OUTBOUND CALLING NUMBER.

  • @ericc1214
    @ericc1214 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These apps and blocking numbers is total bullshit. Here's why... When the inbound caller ID is spoofed, it's often done so ONCE, using a randomized legitimate local number. Blocking it does nothing to stop same scammer from calling again with a slightly different number. What's worse, is by blocking a legitimate local number, you've now condemned the owner of that number - and when he tries to call others, he's number is falsely blocked. By spoofing random local number, the scammers accomplish two things - they get you to answer, and the render spam blacklisted databases useless because they start to amass too many legitimate numbers.
    The only fix is to block all CID spoofing. Unfortunately, there are too many legacy PBX systems which legitimately require spoofing to operate correctly.

I rarely get spam calls now that they realized they can't leave any spam messages on my voicemail and they instantly get denied if their number isn't in my address book. I get a spam call maybe once every few days. Definitely not a technique most people can use but works great for me.

    My 89 year old mother has dementia and various scammers call her on her landline home phone. Some days it can be as many as 15 calls. Morning to night. These scammers ignore the Do Not Call List. I do not know a way to stop them. It's sad that I'm actually "glad" that my mother has forgotten her social security number and how to give out her relevant personal information. They often ask her for these things. The way they harass a sick old lady is criminal.

      I also hate this Potential spam calls on my phone. I am a senior and I suffer from ailments and by the time I receive calls for Dr. appointments my phone comes up with potential spam. With a big company like Verizon and all of our business with your company .
      I am ready to try another company
      I have never had this problem with other services and ready to call the Feds and get this fixed. If you cannot fix this I need a different

    "no harm trying them out"? You mean besides Trucaller downloading your entire contact list and then storing that for anyone to access. So even if you've never used their service your name and number are stored on their servers without your permission.

    There’s a simpler way to deal with these. Just don’t answer any number that you don’t know. If they really want to get a hold of you then they will leave a voicemail. Only then you’ll know if it is a scam or not. In which you can block the number after if it is.

    Here's the problem as I see it. These blocking apps are operating on the theory that the unwanted number will keep calling so once it has been identified, future calls from that number will be blocked. That might have worked 5 years ago but today, if a telemarketer number is blocked, they will call from a unregistered number that isn't even assigned. I know because when I call the number, a recording tells me that the number I dialed is incorrect. So, no app exists that can predict what number will be used the next time. The number doesn't exist. ALL OF THESE BLOCKING APPS ARE NOT GOING TO WORK AND ONLY COMPLICATE YOUR LIFE MORE. Yet, I am told that the wireless carriers, AT&T, SPRINT, VERIZON ETC KNOW HOW TO STOP THESE CALLS BUT WON'T DO IT.

    I added everyone I want to take a call from to my favorites list, then turned on do not disturb with the setting to ring thru favorites... I now get 0 spam calls. The only downside is when you are expecting a call from someone whose number you don't know, you have to remember to turn off Do Not Disturb, or it will go to voicemail.

    I am so sick about hearing about the Do Not call registry. I'M ALREADY ON THE DO NOT CALL REGISTRY!! It does nothing. I spoke to someone from the FCC. they offer little to no help. I've spoken to my carrier. They offer little to no help. It's gotta be something that can stop them! I am sick of getting these calls.

    Do these stop the call or do they send the caller to voicemail? I have a Private caller and can not block them. It will send the call to voicemail and I want the call to me stopped before it gets sent to my phone.

    The problem is they use existing and real numbers. If I were to block every single number that turns out to be a robo call, eventually I would be blocking everyone in my city. They even used the number for the city where I live in! I was hoping Nomorobo was the solution I've been looking for and went and paid for it. Well, didn't work. I just got a robocall.
