    Breaking in a first base mitt is super important because the infield is counting on you to secure an out. This video will help highlight the most important parts of the break in and shaping process. The best thing to do is use a mallet till you're able to play catch than just use the glove as much as you can!

    I played baseball as a kid, but played hockey as a goaltender through college. After a few injuries kind of took me off the ice, my wife (who played softball) thought we should try a softball league together. So naturally I'm at first base, and love it. Just picked up a Rawlings liberty, and I'm super happy I found your channel.

    I oiled my glove up (liberally), stuffed a ball in the pocket, tied (wrapped) it with rawhide strips, and set it the corner of my living sofa on it for a week. Perfect. Also did that with my Catcher's mitt.

    I got a new glove last summer and before I hadn’t cared about the shape. I flared the thumb and pinkie, and broke it in two hinges thumb to ring finger. I’ve become a more confident fielder even with a cheap glove. Its all about break, price isn’t everything

    • @ballgloveking
      @ballgloveking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s true, it just doesn’t hurt to have a higher quality leather.
      The biggest difference is longevity. Pros can’t use soft leather because they play so much baseball + the balls are hit and thrown so dang hard it would destroy the glove in a week

    I think with my old glove I had no idea what breaking in even was and just started using it. With the new mitt I just bought I really took care to get the pocket and the hinges right, and even just in practice I felt like the pocket just "sucked in" some balls that I think would have fallen out of my old mitt. So thanks for the video!

Side note: so you have a 44 RB5 in this video with a custom logo, does it cost extra to add a custom logo, or do i just email them with no expectation of an extra pricetag? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

  • @hvalleydude922
    @hvalleydude922 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great vid as usual. The denim RB5 is looking nicely broken in. I think your point about the pocket being up higher in the web is interesting; I wonder if it depends at least somewhat on the design of the glove. Gloves with the PRO-DCT Single Post design have a very big palm overlay, which creates a larger palm area with a "pocket," slightly below the web, at the top of the palm (sort of like a catcher's mitt). Gloves like the RB5, the Rawlings PROFM20XL, and PRO-DCT H-web gloves don't have that big palm overlay and the web sits on/cradles the shell side of the glove. I think it's these glove designs that create the higher pocket that you are describing. But hey, who cares? I just made all that stuff up anyway.

    • @ballgloveking
      @ballgloveking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, I actually agree with you and realized some of that during editing. So just like any other glove, the different models call for different styles of break in

    The way I had broken in my 1B glove with two hinges, and allowed it to be wide when I open it, and when I close it the entire web wraps around and traps the ball. Basically, I broke it in so that the thumb binding reaches the pinky binding. It's been very comfortable to me.

    On your point of keeping your gloves shape, I always keep both mine in my helmet, pitchers glove inside the 1b mitt. They've kept their shape really nice and while the 1b mitt is due for retirement she's still aged gracefully.
    Personally as someone who hasn't moved from first unless I'm pitching, I really would NOT like to have my thumb flared that much. I think it really narrows down the glove for balls in the dirt to give you a lot less chance to get at stuff that isn't in pick range and has to be found off its bounce. I tell my teammates to hit dirt before they ever sail anything so that may influence that as well.
    Completely unrelated, first mens league game of the season was this weekend. Played against a brand new team that had just been created a month or so earlier. Games something like 12-4 at the end, but the ending was just beautiful. Second to last inning the 3rd out is on batters interference when a runner goes to steal 3rd. In the last inning the 1st and 3rd outs come on batters interference again on the same play. Jogging off the field on a runners interference was a new one for me.

      (You could possibly borrow a teammates first base mitt on occasion)
      If you’re gonna play all four years it’s a good idea to spend $200-$350 on a glove cause it’ll last you all four years as long as you take care of it
      The best budget glove is a 44 pro (they have sales every holiday) or a Buckler Phalanx which you can find on Amazon

    I use to just take a baseball, vegetable oil, and a piece of string to break in my gloves.
    Then play a bunch of catch of course lol

      There's not really one glove that sticks out for small hands at first. I'm sorry I can't help a ton

      No steaming a glove softens the leather in a way that it doesn't last as long as it would have

    simple as shit, first bang the shit out of it against the dirt, a bench too, let it come in contact with it's environment, let it breathe in the dirt, and to get dirty too, then condition it, tie it together with a ball, then break it in playing catch, a nice hard catch
