fun fact there's legal history about Budweiser firing an employee that was seen drinking a miller at a bar. it came out that his employment contract had a clause that said he could consume rival products.
it was the other way around, a miller employee got fired for drinking bud light but ye... its actually super illegal for an employer to do that and several companies have tried it over many years and essentially get away with it until an employee reports it to their union and the company gets fined and everyone forgets about it
i should probably mention this because someones inevitably gonna bring up anti competition clause but that only applies to working for a rival company or being paid to advertise a rival company and only applies to work related actions for a finite period. basically you can say you prefer a rivals product even with an anti competition clause you just cant do it for money. a company could likely fire you for it but you would be able to claim wrongful termination. tldr in the US and almost all of europe and oceania it is illegal for an employer to fire you for supporting a competitor/ rival business on your own time and dime. however they get away with it all the time

I Can't point to where it got cult-y, ( maybe under the surface it always was.. idk) but this level of pettiness is new to me.
I work for a company that has like 2 competitors on the market. Whenever there is like a competition over a big client, we do our best to win them over. Sometimes we've even told a customer like "yeah we have that feature" and then tell the coders to whip that up in the next month or so. And the competitors do it too and they know we do it, I think the big customers know it too. So every time we run into a competitors personnel they're like "That feature you added last minute was a really good play, we know you didn't have it when you told the client you do. Next time we'll push harder" and then we laugh over a beer even though we're often talking about winning or losing a contract worth several million euros. No one really cares about making enemies or holding grudges over things like brand loyalty when you're not working
To the point about the tree. Interaction and immersion is huge in games. I strongly believe that once the tech gets more affordable and not as technologically limited, vr games will be the next step.
if a competitor has a good product, wouldn't it be beneficial to consume the opposing product in case you could learn how to make your competing product better?

Every human is tribalistic. Everyone has a belief and a hated group. No exceptions. But console fanboys are worse than racists. At least racism creates jokes we can all laugh at. Salty gamers *are* jokes. But no one's laughing.

"Am I the only person that thinks that that might be a little bit problematic; that they're sending the media all this new free stuff?" We had a whole thing about exactly this issue about 8 - 10 years ago but because one of those complaints involved a game dev and a journalist sleeping together (allegedly for better review scores or increased access or something like that) the whole movement was labeled as sexist and promptly demonized.
To be fair Gamergate was about many things. Most prominently was about certain radical individuals making 'documentaries' (only in the loosest sense) about games they had never played. I mean they admitted they hadnt played the games (or even watch videos) because their stories/documentaries had so many incosistencies they could even be brought to court. After that those certain individuals formed certain companies that pushed their agenda & with the help of Twitter (which was radical left-only at the time) they started to push for EGS and things like that.
In Tokyo, a friend of mine who works for Nissan, isn't allowed to park his car in the employee parking area. They have a special spot around the back of the factory near the dumpster for his Mazda to park. This situation reminded me of that.
When I see things like this I am always reminded of the Taco commercial where they are fighting about hard or soft tacos and the little girl turns around and says "why not both?"
There's some good reasons they don't get early access, etc. and have to buy the game when they are working for the company; for one, it helps with security (i.e. protecting IP); I can also see why they wouldn't want random employees streaming content for an upcoming game; they have marketing teams that organize independent outlets to do that stuff; it protects the company from the employee slipping up and revealing things that would violate an NDA among other potential issues. There are more but this would become a really long post...lol 15:07
"It doesn't have to look like a real tree, I just have to be able to blow it up". There should be a placard in every game studio entrance that says this.
These people forget that the games industry stands on the shoulders of giants. Games have gotten better because devs improve upon the great games of the past. If you don't play games from other devs or studios you really reduce the creative pool. How many times have you heard a dev in an interview go "We were inspired by X game and really just wanted to make a game just like it but over development it changed and became this great new thing."
Ganes haven't gotten better the graphics have become more realistic while the art styles are disappearing. The amount of companies owned by the same mega corp will never have any drive to make new ips when they can just do a bunch of remakes and sell millions of copies to 30 yr olds who want a nostalgia trip and ignore everything else just because you played it as a kid. Nostalgia doesn't equal a good game. Its a tactic they use to get people to keep spending money on barely updating games. I dont want Bethesda to keep the glitches in just because "its Bethesda" nah why is Bethesda fine with being known as the company too lazy to fix their own games especially after a decade.
@@That_Squatch the games bubble is already over. The people playing Bethesda games are older millennials trying to rediscover the hype of Skyrim or fallout 3. Once that generation ages out, Bethesda and several other companies will die out with them, leaving behind fortnite and the like. Younger gamers don't even like story games IME.
I'm 37, and used to be a part of the console wars when I was 12, but now I own PS5, XSX, Switch, and Steamdeck. It's so nice to NOT care about exclusives anymore because I can buy whatever game I want for whatever console I want, whenever I want.
Exclusives are garbage, I'm glad for the PC cuz its just a cash grab nonsense ponzi scheme, everything should be on PC or on 1 console if not then screw these greedy pieces of garbage
Frankly I think there's a lot less exlusivity and shit now as well. with gamepass I basically don't need an Xbox and just need a playstation for whatever exclusive comes out. 10 years ago the decision between an Xbox and Playstation was a lot more important if you could only afford one.
What people don't know is that even the higher ups in different studios talk to each other all the time. Even if the companies are technically "exclusive" to opposite consoles. I'm sure Todd has spoken to the CEO of whatever studio she works at on more than one occasion. They all cross each other at conventions and other business events, etc. I was a game tester for 10 years at a AAA studio and this was pointed out to me more than once. The first time was because someone did something really dumb and leaked some screenshots and information. He was fired and my lead said "Well that guy's probably never going to work in the game industry for a long time." I asked why and he explained that the game industry is kind of insular, so if you do something stupid like that word gets around. CEOs talk to each other and will warn each other about people." The second time it happened was one of the IT guys was working from home and forgot the work VPN was on and downloaded an episode of Game of Thrones (especially bad since we worked for WB). The bosses didn't actually really care and the guy was well-liked and it was an honest mistake, but he HAD to be fired for appearance's sake. The boss called the boss at another studio and arranged to have the guy get hired over there. Also, lets not forget that every dev at every studio probably has a Nintendo Switch at home. Every Xbox dev probably has a least one Playstation at home as well. Maybe 2 if they have kids. It's completely asinine to think that just because you work at a developer you can't play and/or stream any other company's games. EDIT: 15:14 Those fun media kits and early access that her friends in the media get are exactly the kind of thing GamerGate was about. Yeah it shouldn't be a thing. Those gifts come with the expectation that you'll give the game a positive review. If they don't give a positive review, then they won't get the gifts and early access next time.
My girlfriend works for a cosmetics outlet - the staff can only wear makeup they sell in-store (while at work) so that customers have faith that the products being sold are desirable to those in the know, and they can't promote anything on their social media that might suggest otherwise. And I sort of get it. If someone comes up to you like "I love that lipstick" and you're like "thanks it's from another store", you're turning people away from the brands you supply. It is a little OTT, but it has a rationale to it.
Oh man I can't wait to see the innovation in video games in 10 years. I can imagine a game mechanic where every time you take damage it drains money directly from your checking account. 10:00 This I completely agree with, while the industry has made jumps at certain points in time, I feel like it's stagnated massively when it comes to gameplay just to have a bigger more graphically detailed world. Ultimately if you strip games back to their core components the only difference you'll find in a game like Arkham City in 2011 and Elden Ring in 2022 is the scale and graphics, so I'd be interested to know what actual leaps there'll be in gaming over the next 10-20 years because bar going full VR integration I haven't seen many games pushing to redefine a genre of game let alone gaming as a whole to suggest gaming is going to be vastly different in decades to come.
There have been some leaps in gameplay systems but the jump has been considerably smaller than the decade before. Games that come to mind: Baldur's Gate III; for the massive amount of permutations in the story and gameplay. Hades; for the innovative blend of gameplay and story progression. Sekiro; for one of the most polished/free form and great feeling swordplay. Nier Automata; for the innovate blend between 3rd person action, shoot 'm up and platforming. (and crazy storytelling aswell) Hitman series reboot; For the extreme freedom and sandbox nature of the levels. But yeah, they are more like iterations and/or combinations of existing systems. There's been almost nothing truely original in a long while. (with the exception of some indie titles)
I haven't played many games over the past decade. The few that I have played, I find myself turning the graphics down to as low as possible just to get as seam-less gameplay as I can lol. With the exception of one the guy before me mentioned... (nier automata needs max graphics to enjoy the beauty of the scenery to accompany the absolute banger of every song in the sound track ;). ) Jokes aside, even armored core 6 gives me some frame drops when shit is hitting the fan, I refuse to sacrifice frames for enjoying the graphics (excellent game by the way, glad it is one of my 1 to 2 purchases of game[s] per year)
The problem is that the controllers we use havent significantly advanced in capabilities in over 2 decades. Even if you stan gyro, thats just mouse aim for controllers. Mouse aim has existed for a very long time too. Game design cant really advance until the way we interact with the games also advance. Unfortunately, any time someone tries to innovate in the controller space it gets shot down by the masses calling it a gimmick. VR could potentially revolutionize the game space, but a: its a slow burn right now due to low adoption and b: due to the requirements of vr its unlikely it would replace non vr gaming - the best it can really hope for is coexistence.
@@gordonlove5121 Yeah i agree with you, it makes sense too. AAA developers can't take as big of risks as AA or indie devs can. E.g. designing the level in such a way that the AI's decisions would result in flanking the player. Again, old memory, so spoonfuls of salt, also currently tipsy

Imagine that someone from one side of the game industry likes an opposing product because it's actually a good game, and decides to play it for fun, and maybe to see how it works so they can incorporate it into their own game in the future. huh how strange it's almost like an artist watching another artist work as reference for their own art, or a manufacturing business using similar production methods as other companies to help in production
Do have to disagree with her on the "Devs just support games" thing. We saw how Devs reacted to Elden Ring and BG3. Support is not the word I'd use for them. :D
Less than a handful of devs don't speak for the entire industry. I know it's hard for you to imagine that after all of the discourse created for consumption.
I love how PC gamers don't see the irony in saying "console wars are stupid because PCs are better" like bro... slow down, think carefully about what you just said The best way to pass off console and PC fan boys is to have a job and enjoy all the games in whichever way you want because you can afford all 3 consoles and a PC/steam deck
Blowing up a tree is also part of the computer graphics tho and that's what she is trying to say too. How such mechanic could be computed is limited and that's the technical limitation, the computing power of the current hardware. @@bumpsy its true. I thought the same thing but i googled it and hes correct.
fun fact there's legal history about Budweiser firing an employee that was seen drinking a miller at a bar. it came out that his employment contract had a clause that said he could consume rival products.
That was common place. Coca-cola and Pepsi had the same contractual clause
it was the other way around, a miller employee got fired for drinking bud light but ye... its actually super illegal for an employer to do that and several companies have tried it over many years and essentially get away with it until an employee reports it to their union and the company gets fined and everyone forgets about it
i should probably mention this because someones inevitably gonna bring up anti competition clause but that only applies to working for a rival company or being paid to advertise a rival company and only applies to work related actions for a finite period. basically you can say you prefer a rivals product even with an anti competition clause you just cant do it for money. a company could likely fire you for it but you would be able to claim wrongful termination.
tldr in the US and almost all of europe and oceania it is illegal for an employer to fire you for supporting a competitor/ rival business on your own time and dime. however they get away with it all the time

Damn, she defeated us with facts and logic . _.
In the Gaming Industy, not playing a competitors game is a good way to fail at making your own game succeed.
They also forget that just improving graphics doesn't make games fun or interesting

Frankly I think there's a lot less exlusivity and shit now as well. with gamepass I basically don't need an Xbox and just need a playstation for whatever exclusive comes out. 10 years ago the decision between an Xbox and Playstation was a lot more important if you could only afford one.
@@TGPDrunknHick yea its really unfortunate. Exclusives give us so many great games to play. 10 years ago gaming was so much better
CEOs talk to each other and will warn each other about people."
The second time it happened was one of the IT guys was working from home and forgot the work VPN was on and downloaded an episode of Game of Thrones (especially bad since we worked for WB).
I can see battle pass battle passes. The next gen consoles will have credit card readers built into the controllers. So innovation such wow.

Games that come to mind:
Baldur's Gate III; for the massive amount of permutations in the story and gameplay.
Hades; for the innovative blend of gameplay and story progression.
Sekiro; for one of the most polished/free form and great feeling swordplay.
Nier Automata; for the innovate blend between 3rd person action, shoot 'm up and platforming. (and crazy storytelling aswell)
Hitman series reboot; For the extreme freedom and sandbox nature of the levels.
(nier automata needs max graphics to enjoy the beauty of the scenery to accompany the absolute banger of every song in the sound track ;). )
Jokes aside, even armored core 6 gives me some frame drops when shit is hitting the fan, I refuse to sacrifice frames for enjoying the graphics (excellent game by the way, glad it is one of my 1 to 2 purchases of game[s] per year)
@@thalanoth uhu, Nier Automata's scenery 😜
But yeah, i agree. That game has one of the very best OST's in gaming!
Come to think of it, all the examples I gave were games made by relatively small teams (compared to the likes of Blizzard/EA etc.)

She is a gem❤
I love how PC gamers don't see the irony in saying "console wars are stupid because PCs are better" like bro... slow down, think carefully about what you just said
The best way to pass off console and PC fan boys is to have a job and enjoy all the games in whichever way you want because you can afford all 3 consoles and a PC/steam deck
in the near future , not having a social media presence is going to make you more hireable
It really makes console wars people look even more pathetic than before. No one in the industry cares about it
Ignore it and move on. By making that video, she already lost.
Isn't this the lady who lied about her job once already?
Info on this?
She's 100% saying all this for attention 😂
Lmao I said "there's no reason to buy an Xbox because I have a PC" to my audience too and got grilled for like 2 months and lost a lot of people lmao
Blowing up a tree is also part of the computer graphics tho and that's what she is trying to say too. How such mechanic could be computed is limited and that's the technical limitation, the computing power of the current hardware. You would not have the same feeling from blowing up the tree if it did not look like blowing up the tree, for example if it just disappeared and some text said "you blew up a tree".
she looks like she is crying the entire video
