    In this video I discuss my Phalaenopsis violacea which grows in Sumatra and mention Phal. bellina which is from Borneo. Until 1995, the latter was known as "Phal. violacea var. Borneo" but has since been recognized as its own specie. Bellina's leaves are thicker, more succulent and pendant than violacea. Also bellina's fragrance is sweet like violacea's is spicy.
    The hybrid orchid I am featuring is Phal. YangYang Blueberry 'Blue Velvet' (YangYang New Star x violacea var. indigo). That hybrid is 50% violacea, 25% tetraspis and 25% speciosa.
    Link to my video on mounting Phal, metawaiensis which is a third member of the violacea group.

      Bellina fait partie des "polychilos". Elle fleurit en été et automne contrairement aux Phal. à grandes fleurs qui fleurissent au printemps (les hybrides fleurissent quand elles veulent!). J'ai tendance a monter mes bellina sur bois plutôt que de les cultiver en pot, mais si vous les cultivez en pot, évitez tout excès d'eau quand il ne fait pas chaud.

      I alternate products because else they get used to it and they start getting resistant to it. I use Avid (expensive but very effective), a 3/1 miticide from Bayer (Home Depot), insecticidal soap (more environmentally friendly), Isopropyl alcohol pure at 70% which kills on contact but not to spray on any flower or buds. I also use Sultan twice a year. Sultan is a systemic but should not be sprayed more than twice a year. Spraying off the leaves with water removed many mites and can be part of the approach.

    Salut! I’m really confused about the culture for the warm growing types. My supplier says, to take it in at night in the hot season so that it is cooler. That would mean, keeping it at around 100 in the day time and 80 in the night time. In my weather, I find that the complex hybrid phals do best in terracotta pots with a mix of leca, moss and pumice. Would that suffice for these warm growers too? I just went and ordered a whole bunch of the ‘novelty Phalaenopsis’. They’re going to be my biggest challenge yet! PS: the Chiloschista is doing quite well after a constant blast of 95% humidity and twice watering. I see quite a few robust new growth this month. The light is the same as the cattleya. How about yours?

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      'Novelty Phalaenopsis' are hybrids and should be more tolerant of various conditions. All Phalaenopsis are "warm" growers but the large flower type needs a large enough differential of temperatures during the winter to trigger blooms and those temperatures need to be below 70 F or preferably lower. I don't think (but I may be wrong) that a temperature differential matters for the smaller flower type as they need heat during the day as well as long days to bloom. You have 100 during the day time? Wow... that's a lot for any orchid I think! As far as you growing them in terra cotta the way you do it, if it works for you, that's it: do it! My Chilochista seemed to be growing 3 spikes thanks to your good advice but then it stalled and when I used a magnifying glass, I noticed they had been invaded by mealybugs which is frustrating because I typically don't have problems with those pests. I sprayed but now it looks dead. It is not dead though as a magnifying glass shows 2 small green growths coming but I think it got set back quite a bit!

      @@orchidhouse there’s car exhaust smoke and tarmac everywhere in Mumbai. Starting February, till mid June ( this year, it was July) the sun really beats down all day long and nights are hot and stifling. I use a shade cloth in the growing space during that time. And watering every day is a must. It’s mites and thrips galore. Quite an adventure, growing orchids. Life is interesting! My challenge is to grow phalaenopsis without killing them in summer. With the terracotta pot, it seemed to do better. Maybe it’s the cooling effect of the terracotta.

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@coypeahen That's indeed quite a challenge and I can see why your supplier recommends bringing plants inside at night. As far as cooling, when you mount, roots are exposed and cool off faster but as long as terracotta pots work for you in your own -harsh- growing conditions, that's all that matters. Good luck with the novelty girls...

    What you use for mites

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alternate different products like Avid, Conserve, Sultan, 3 in 1 from Bayer, miticide soaps. Spray the leaves with water knocks off the mites too but you should do that early in the day and the leaves must dry out fast. It is important to consider the life cycle of these pests: you should treat them repeatedly at 4 day interval for a couple of weeks and then at longer intervals to keep the population low or gone if you're lucky. Finally mites are spiders and only miticides work on them, not insecticides.

    How much larger has this one gotten in the past two years since you published this video?

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In June 2023, it was at its peak and had an inflo with 3 flowers. The leaves were gorgeous and plump. I went on vacation for 10 days and put it in area where the sprinklers ran daily for 15 min. It was not supposed to hit the Phal violacea but it did apparently. It was June and the weather was incredibly hot this year. When I came back it was rotten and dead! One of the worst disasters in my orchid growing life. It went from peak to death in just 10 days. I also lost my schilleriana then for the same reason but that one was struggling. I bought a new schilleriana recently and made a video on mounting it. Phal violacea is a must in any collection. I will buy a new one. The fragrance is amazing.

      Bellina is no different from violacea when it comes to size. In fact, until 1995 it was considered a variety of violacea. The leaves are a bit wider and shinier but it is especially more finicky than violacea. Also bellina blooms a lot less than violacea. Bellina is not easy to grow
