    Thanks for sharing your watering tips. It was very helpful. I have a very difficult time with sphagnum moss too. I always wonder why the nurseries are so successful in growing the pals in moss. I live in the Sarasota, FL area and I am going to try putting some of my phals out onto the Lanai. I'm hoping it won't be too shady for them. Thanks again for the great content.

      @@amberbodecker7698 For the large hybrid Phals, it is best to grow them in sphagnum moss in the clear plastic pots but you can mount them, but make sure that the plant is FIRMLY secured to the mount (cannot wobble AT ALL). I use velcro tape to secure the plant. You can use sphagnum moss to keep them hydrated enough but you will also need to secure the moss to the mount. I would leave some new root tips outside of the moss.
      Give it a try with one of the 2 and see how it works for you and if you are happy, do it to the second one as well.

    Also, how do you water them? Pot by pot or spray with a hose?

    Hello, my husband bought me an orchid and my aunt bought me one about a year ago. Needless to say the one my aunt bought me is about dead, but it does have about 2 roots that are not dead. It is a small plant. The one my husband bought me was more recent but I didn't find your video until the flower shoots are dead. I want to save the little one. I am pretty sure I can save the bigger one. What is the best way to save the smaller plant. I want learn and save them. I live in the treasure coast.

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is tough to answer without seeing the condition of the plant. If it has 2 good roots (not mushy) you can probably save it. I would recommend to repot in a TIGHT pot with moss, give a good soaking and then let dry out entirely for a whole week and monitor the roots. If you see new root growth, you are on the right track. Hopefully you can save it but.....Some times they are too far gone and you're better off buying a new one. Good luck!

      @@orchidhouse Thank you for getting back with me. I do have two or 3 good roots. I also see green at the center after I removed all the dead roots and leaves. I can’t believe it is still a little green. I really want to save it. I put in a pot with holes and added the orchid mixture with bark, pebbles and moss. I also feed it with a spray and water. The other one my husband got me, I tied it to an old branch I found and put the branch in a pot. I put them both in my patio. I liked the one you had mounted on a branch so I tried that one with the one that is in better shape. I never really cared about orchids, but that changed when my husband brought me one. • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I use a hose to water these Phal. hybrids and many other of my orchids but I also use a sprayer with rain water for more delicate orchids. I add Epsom salt once a month to my standard fertilizer but I also alternate with another fertilizer that already has calcium and magnesium in it (no need for Epsom salt there). Eventually I should look into using a slow release fertilizer but I enjoy the work LOL.

  • @AnimalLover-ei8md
    @AnimalLover-ei8md 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How often do you water and fertilise them ?

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Watering depends mostly on the temperatures and humidity as they dry faster when it is hotter and drier obviously but I am never in a hurry to rehydrate them right away. I really play it by ear. I would say definitely at least once a week in the summer obviously (I grow outdoors in a tropical climate) and less than once a week over the winter. The most critical part is that I want the moss to be dry when nighttime temps drop below 55 F/13 C as a moist medium is a recipe for rot and disease under those conditions. My overall fertilizing schedule for most of my orchids is "weakly, weekly" but I give more fertilizers to my catasetums when in full growth and to my Stanhopeas and some Dendrobiums. These Phal. hybrids get the least fertilizers of all because if they are dry when I fertilize on Sunday I just skip. Obviously they don't seem to suffer from it. While fertilizing matters, it is the least important factor in growing orchids I think: proper watering practices, proper light for flowering and proper temperature are more important in my opinion. To summarize: these Phal hybrids get the most neglect of all my orchids and it probably goes to show that some level of neglect is better for orchids than excessive love, especially excessive "watering love" which is a tendency that I have.
