    That was so cool to physically see the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical! Hearing the motor slow down when the light goes on is surreal

      @zedd81 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why did the engine bog down when the lights were attached?

    • @xostler
      @xostler 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zedpower mechanical energy is being converted into electrical energy.
      Electricity is generated through induction from the magnetic fields traveling through a copper coil. The conversion is never 100% efficient. So the engine slows down because some of the energy is lost through the friction, which turns into heat.

    • @xostler
      @xostler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      sonicwifi40 lol no I haven’t. I’ve seen it before while using an inverter though, but it’s always cool to me to see the laws of the universe at work

    • @jayzenitram9621
      @jayzenitram9621 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@xostler Not friction, induction. Ever hear of the concept of regenerative breaking? That is when you turn an electric motor (for example in an electric car) into a generator to send electricity back to the battery. What your are seeing here is akin to that.
      The engine slows down when the circuit is closed because the rotating magnets in the rotor are being required to do work by moving electrons around said closed circuit. When the circuit is open (the light is disconnected), no electrons are moving through the windings that surround the spinning magnets and therefore there is no inductive resistance on the rotor and that is why the engine speeds up.

      I am laboratory physicist living in Switzerland
      You can imagine my work a bit more practical than a normal physicist, its a apprenticeship
      I mainly work in a metrology laboratory (metrology not being weather, but thats the art of measuring, accurate and retracable measurments)
      That aside, i am happy to say that i was able to go and learn machinery for 6 months in another professional company
      Now i agree to his statement
      You need this equipment
      Else you will end up like these DIY channels using hotglue and stuff

    Even though there's no visibly added physical resistance, just because the light is shooting photons and removing energy from the system, it makes the fan spin noticeably slower. I love that you added that to the video. It illustrates a really important physical phenomenon.

      Question being that I have only watched this one video and your comment addresses my question. Is that the purpose of the fan shroud on the front of the engine to cool the front cylinders?

    • @best_pilot
      @best_pilot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emblems4life726 Yes, probably two reasons:
      (1) Cooling the front row of cylinders (these need to stay as cool as possible).
      (2) It definately looks better than these original thick propeller blades.

    • @raelik777
      @raelik777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Unfortunately it doesn't produce nearly enough power. Some mechanical improvements that could help it achieve that would be large heatsink fins on the cold side, more precisely machined linkages between the hot piston, cold displacers, and the nutator (wobble plate). Also, putting a faring over the engine behind the cold side to keep the hot side hot as well as putting regenerators (typically copper or steel wool) in the hot/cold passage to allow recapture of heat. Machining all of the cylinders, pistons and displacers to tighter tolerances, as well as using better seals would allow the working gas to be pressurized, or even replaced with a lighter weight gas, such as helium. Doing ALL of these things, as well as using a stronger heat source, might allow you to get a stirling engine up to enough power to fly a very light weight aircraft.
