About 45 years ago for me, we were trying to see how long a spark we could get on an EXTREMELY dry day. It was my task to tap the adjuster to move the electrode closer, well I missed and landed about 6 feet away wondering how the mule that kicked me had gotten into the classroom on the 4th floor. We were drawing about a 6-7" spark when I got bit.
this looked in surprisingly good condition for being 140 years old. was probably stored properly. nice restoration, cool to see something completely different than usual!
I would hazard a fuess that that particular one is nothing like that old. The materials are more 1980s than 1880s. Polystyrene, for example. Also, the Leyden jars are Pyrex, so can't be pre-1915.

I've never seen a restoration of a Wimshurst machine. Gorgeous job! Incidentally, you can purchase new brush assemblies to replace those very worn out ones if you want.

Wow! I said "Wow!" out loud to the dogs at least three times during this one, especially when you turned the wheels back into "ebonite" and cleaned up those Pyrex tubes! Excellent restoration! I did a similar one for Jadis Movie Prop Rentals in Santa Monica, CA. Extremely interested in how you handled the Capacitors. I laminated aluminum foil on the outer and inner surfaces. The inner surfaces were real tough to get right. I liked your method much better! I also put a handful of steel ball bearings in the capacitor bottoms. Used similar melt bonding belt material. Really a treat to watch and learn from your restoration!

Pour retirer la colle sèche, et selon le type de colle, le "solvapeint" qui doit être principalement du toluène marche bien... Je me suis aussi aperçu que le white spirit peut aussi donner de très bon résulats. Encore bravo pour ce travail de remise en état ! Vous allez bientot pouvoir oucrir un petit musée :-) !

You're a hobbyist, so cutting the contacts individually by hand on the band saw is fine. I imagine if anyone were to be making these in a higher quantity, some kind of multi-punch tool would be ideal. That said, this is beautiful! You might want to find a way to keep the crossed pull cable from rubbing though. Still, great job.
Just fantastic. One of my favourite museums, the Teylers museum in Haarlem, the Netherlands has the largest of these in existence, the Grote Elektriseermachine. It is one impressive machine but I'm not sure if it can still be operated.

I once saw plans to make your own at home using a couple of old LP records and some aluminum foil for the main disks, and some large prescripton bottles for the capacitor bodies. Almost had al l the parts at one point, but never got to finish it... Nice job on making this classic device looks like new again!
I made one (secondary school age) 😖with old 78 RPM records and dishwasher liquid bottles and aluminium foil for the Leyden jars. Worked well for a bit then I got a huge whack from it and smashed it as I pushed it away.😖
Excellent work. Now it's an art object. I once had to restore a similar electrophorus machine made in the USSR in the fifties of the twentieth century. But it didn't turn out so beautifully. The only nitpick is the condition of the brushes for removing the charge. But it's very difficult to find suitable material for their repair. Nevertheless, it works great. Also a great selection of paint. I'm happy to give your video a Like and will see what else you've restored.
What an interesting device! And a really good restoration. I will admit that I was wondering what scientific explanation there could be for the paint having wrinkled. It didn’t occur to me that it must have been intentional!

There was no powder coating, but I agree, the restoration was a labour of love.
