For a spoiler-free video on The Last of Us to share with anyone you think might be interested in this amazing story (or for those who want to officially decide to throw The Last of Us out the window for having to see it mentioned everywhere): th-cam.com/video/1fk0mMAMKbo/w-d-xo.html Why do you love The Last of Us? Do you think there's anything I missed? Thanks for watching my first official video as I get started on regular uploads!
Great video! You bring the points about the uncertainty of the cure that few people did. I'd also add that the way the Fireflies went about it without even consulting Ellie herself, not letting Joel talk to her and the way they treat him. They went about the whole thing in the most shitty way possible. Now as to why I'm obsessed with this game, let me first say that I haven't even played it yet. I preordered the PC version and I can't wait for it to be released on March 28. I actually only became aware of it very recently. I watched at least 3 TH-camrs play it the entire way through, watched 2 or 3 versions of all the cut scenes montages. ... and fell in love hard with both Joel and Ellie. All the reasons you give for loving this game are valid. In my case (and I'm sure many others like me), there's an additional layer. I'm actually close to Joel's age in the game. When I was a kid, I really wanted a sister. It wasn't in the books for my parents and I remained an only child. In my own couple, I really, really wanted a daughter but that wasn't in the books for us either for reasons I won't bore you with here, so we have no children (still very happy and fulfilled... but I have not known that particular type of joy). Something about Ellie in the game has stirred up some strong paternal instincts and emotions for me. It's hit me harder than fictional characters should have. Regardless of everything else that's great in this game, that's the part that had the most initial impact on me. I re watched the scene right after Ellie kills David and Joel cuddles her many times and it absolutely wrecks me every time. I rewatched many other scenes too including the birthday surprise scenes from Part 2. I just love these two in a way that is strange even to me as they are fictitious characters. But these characters and this story are just extremely compelling and from what I've read here and elsewhere, I'm clearly far from the only one and everyone has their own reasons to feel that way. Thank you for this video, I loved it!
I think you nailed it. It's a beautiful story. It's a real pity the story in TLoU2 so, so bad. From Shakespeare to she-hulk in a single step. It blows my mind that they would put so much effort into building the world, only to ruin it with a mindbogglingly bad narrative.
Few mediums keep us coming back to a story over and over again for an entire decade. Video games are truly special, and this one has so much hype for a reason. Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
The reason I'm obsessed enough that I purposefully wait six months between plays so that my brain is reset to take in the experience as a new one is because the LOU world is so immersive. The emotions are so real. The characters are so human. The monsters seem realistic as though they could actually exist. I am literally transported to the dystopian landscapes (even though after 20 some odd years most structures below 2 or 3 stories would barely be visible due to all of the growth), trying to fight my way through. After I've gotten through the games I feel like I've literally come back to my reality...............as if I'm returning from some nightmare of a vacation. No one makes a game like Naughty Dog. No one.
I love this! I usually play once a year, but between Part 1 releasing and the tv show, I've already played 3 times in the last 6 months. Oops. And you're very right. I haven't played Uncharted yet, and I plan on streaming and doing a series here on it this year. Naughty Dog is special.
When this game came out, I was a father of a 4 year old daughter. With the show out now 10 years later, I'm a father of a 14 year old which is the same age as Ellie in the game. This game resonated with me so much, and now even moreso. With the show being arguablely the best ever adaptation of any kind of a video game, it makes me love the game that much more. I love your name, you have a great style, and your voice is dope. Subbed.
Thank you so much for the kind words! A fun context on the name for you--we actually did a lot of experimenting on the "MAD" side of things last year on my stream, and now with this video essay project, we're on more of the "kurious" side. I'm really enjoying the show. I plan on doing an analysis about the two, probably in a different light than most will, as someone who appreciates both for different reasons, and because of how the story can develop differently across different mediums. It might be my favorite game adaptation as well. Top 10 for adaptations in general. Some books have had phenomenal adaptations, and one (HBO, naturally), Station Eleven, is the only adaptation that I think surpassed already phenomenal source material. The adaptation of TLOU certainly has its moments of that.
@@madkurious Let's see how they handle the last 3 episodes. These are going to be the most impactful and it will really be interesting to see how people like my father in law will react to the ending since he has no idea how this is going to end.
It literally takes a split second of thinking about this story for me to have to fight back tears welling up. Ellie is my favorite fictional character of all time
When the last of us first came out i had recently lost my kid a few weeks after birth, life was a mess for me, decided to distract myself with this game, after the intro i had to take a break because it felt so real for me, loosing your kid is something else. When i hopped into the game again i was so into it, joel's character kept me going in real life, knowing that he kept going 20 years after the intro fueled me up again. This game is more than a game for me. Its a part of who i am and why i am still here to this day, i shared my pain with joel day after day.
Thank you for sharing this. That's heartbreaking and I'm so sorry for your loss. For some, the game with your experience might have been triggering, but it sounds like you used it as a perfect outlet for your emotions. This is a great example of how gaming is an art that really can help. Much love to you.
That's awesome that you enjoy the series, even from afar! It's coming out for PC soon after the show wraps, if it being a Playstation exclusive was the only thing stopping you.
This series, particularly part 2, is the only video game that bought tears to my eyes. The only video game that had be begging the story for some humanity, the only game where I paused, paced back and forth building up the courage to face what's next. Beautiful and horrifying. And so very human. Edit. I can see people piling on more of their immature hate. As if any of them have ever done something creative in their life. Haters of this game are the biggest losers in the gaming community.
You must be a fucking casual then. There are other near perfect stories, Red Dead Redemption 2 tops a lot of lists. The walking dead, uncharted 2,3,4, half life2, god of war, mass effect 2 to name a few more
if while playing you read the messages and letters that people wrote and left for each other in adversity, you realize that each one is a separate story. that Tlou has a main story, but it is also full of small stories of people we will never meet either through the game or through the series
This is such a good point! There is so much wonderful detail in this game. I learned a few speedrunning strats, and know efficient paths throughout the game from quite a few playthroughs, and I accidentally miss some of that now. But the details and tidbits of side stories are really well done.
@A C my parents don't speak English and was always working. My eldest brother watched over brother and i while we study English I had learnt about the game and had seen someone play so I got the game myself. My upbringing was more mature than most.
It’s crazy that I haven’t seen one person reference “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy as an influence when it comes to the story. Of course it’s not exactly the same but the dynamic of two people, one born before the end of the world and one born after traveling across the country, is the same and is the heart of The Last of Us that it builds it’s story around.
This is a great thought. It's like how Hunger Games took off, and so many didn't realize the huge elements taken from Battle Royale. Honestly, both Battle Royale and Hunger Games are two of my favorite stories. I think that would be a great comparison! I've seen it mentioned on reddit and such before, but you're right, I haven't seen much reference to it.
I was 29, coming from a canceled engagement from my ex-fiancée. Not being a dad but getting to experience such a father daughter story was very impactful to me at that time. The game will always be part of my life.
The reason I truly love this game and everything about it is that I grew up with it, in the literal sense. A year after another, something had to come up about this game that always managed to click that nostalgia button in my head. The other reason this game didn't die is that the developers themselves never gave up on it or abandoned it (like other game devs have done across the years). This is the only game I've seen and played so far that had been remade twice, and it is truly worth it.
This is a really good point. While some may not care for all of the remakes, the one thing that tells us is that the devs care, and if both the devs and the fans care, that alone can keep a series alive.
I just finished the last of us remastered and it was a roller-coaster ride and one of the best games I have ever played. I just ordered part 2 from Amazon for $24. Eagerly waiting to play it.
Are you asking about the new Remake vs PS4 Remastered? The names are a bit confusing, but if you're asking about the newest, the main changes are Graphics, AI, UI. If you're a big fan of the game or brand new to the series, it's worthwhile. if you're looking for an entirely different version, different gameplay, or different scenes, that's not it. I will say the gameplay is different with the AI updates--so that's probably the most noticeable difference from an "improvement" standpoint.
Played the first and second part back to back around 15 month ago! Still to this day i am asking myself '' what the hell did I do to myself?'' It had such an impact on me I feel like I can't enjoy any other game. After 15 month I'm still sitting and think about the story and watching people sharing their opinion on it!
@@jonfreeman9682It is.. It ruined me for any other game too, until I finally played the new God of War & GOW Ragnarok. After playing those though, I'm right back here..
Both games and the entire story as a whole are incredible. I put it up there with the best stories of all time, and I think there's more to be told. Ellie is just the best, and she does feel like a real person. A game being able to give a dad seemingly real fatherly instincts over a fictional character is incredible, lol. I genuinely hope that if they do make a part 3, she gets a happy ending. And I can't say I blame Joel at all. Great video!
Thank you for the kind words! The story really is genius. I'll be studying it for years to come. I don't have a lot of hope for a happy ending, but I really, really want one.
For someone who has played both games I can't get enough of them the story and the game play are outstanding absolutely top notch and the series is exceeding my expectations love it
Great writing and great video! I still remember playing the OG game back in middle school with friends in sleepovers almost 10 years ago. It's a great feeling to now be an adult seeing a live action recreation of the game's writing. Really glad TH-cam is showing me more smaller channels like yours!
Have no idea how I found you, but I'm glad I did! Loved the video. The story is definitely top tier, but I agree that the gameplay itself is also one its greatest assets. It's the one thing that gets criticized the most from the original game, but there's just something about the mechanics in the game, even the specific weightiness of your character's movements, that I found extremely addictive. The often underrated multiplayer was a real treat back in the day, and still has a dedicated community.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. The Remastered absolutely still has a place in the TLOU franchise. Even though the Remake graphics hit 10x harder in the cut scenes, and the AI is more "2023", the funky AI is a part of the charm of the older game, and is something I think I'll probably still go back to from time to time. I haven't spent enough time in the multiplayer yet, but it sounds like the next TLOU game might be focused that direction, too!
I love your video. To be going so deep into what is on its simplest level a game, shows a sensitivity that so many other reviewers seem to be deficient of. I only recently obtained a friends PS4 after he upgraded. Previously I have played many games over the years mainly on PC’s. I cannot think of any that produced such an emotional response in me. I think the closest I ever got was playing the first ‘Homeworld’ game back in 2002. And that was in the first part where you have to save what is left of the Higaran population in hypersleep, as their planet is destroyed before embarking on a search for their original Homeworld. Anyway; I’m a dad, and a grandad; would I sacrifice finding a cure for an infection that has virtually wiped out humanity for a child that I have protected, who has saved my life and who I have grown to love? Absolutely! It’s an astounding accomplishment to create a game like this; I even teared up watching you tear up………lol. Now 3/4 through The Last of us 2, this does not disappoint, however, it is very different and produces quite confusing emotions as you play both sides of the ‘heroine’/ ‘villain’ storyline, (a masterstroke in my opinion), and end up wondering who you’re most comfortable playing! Great review.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I've always loved both gaming and storytelling, and the people who make these games put a lot of thought and heart into them. I'm a firm believer that some of the best games can be analyzed similarly to a piece of literature. I've never heard of Homeworld, but that premise sounds incredible. The more I read comments from parents, the more I realize how well this game was written that it can make that bond feel so real! TLOU2 is an amazing rollercoaster of a story, and some of my favorite gameplay in any video game. Enjoy the rest of it! I plan on doing a couple videos on that, as well, in the relatively near future--after my next replay of it.
These comments make me so happy! I’m glad I exceeded expectations, especially with how familiar you are with my content as a whole! This makes me feel like I’m on the right track. Thank you!
I first played the game when I was 17 in 2013. I did not think twice about the morality of Joel's decision in the end. I was an edgy teenager and thought: Fuck them, it's me and my adoptive daughter against the world. Still, I was thinking about the series for weeks. Now that I replayed it 10 years later with a degree in science and a good portion of scientific idealism, I still did not hesitate to save Ellie. While I now realise that it was the most human thing to do for Joel in the situation (ironically with the use of extreme violence), the scientist in me wonders: What if they could have made a cure with Ellies help? She really might have been their only chance for hope.
I love this take from a scientist! I plan on exploring a bit of this thought in two videos from now! I have two more TLOU essays planned. They really rushed into killing her, and it's the only part of the game that lacks for me when I focus in on it. I know it wasn't generally the point, but it was for Ellie, so it limits them in future games if they don't answer for it.
Wow! Thank you so much for putting this together. You made me tear up watching that first scene 😢 I haven’t seen that clip for a long time as I wasn’t able to make it that far in my third play through because I got stuck in the house with David fighting the infected on the hardest difficulty. While I agree with everything you said I think you missed one important aspect that makes people obsessed with the game and that is the music. At the two minute marker you paused and increased the music and it sent goosebumps all down my arm and I was waiting for you to say it. The music has always played a huge part in my love for both amazing titles, they just wouldn’t be the same without it. I’m sure you love it too I just wish you mentioned it 🙏 I would be keen on a spoiler free version so I could share with others who I’m trying to “convince” watching the show 😢 I’ll subscribe in hoping to see 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I know exactly which section you're talking about. The Coal Mine on Grounded took me hours to get through on that difficulty. When I played it on normal difficulty again after tackling it on Grounded, during the main playthrough used for this video, I knew it so well, that I nearly got it on the first try (only made a mistake on the bloater and got him on the second). Financial District was always my toughest section on normal, but Grounded difficulty is a different beast, and the Coal Mine was by far the hardest section on it with how small it was. And that Ellie scene gets me every single time. Your point about the music is very fair. That section was exactly what I intended the music for, and I absolutely should have said something about it. I realized after publishing that I only showed without telling, and have actually started using section titles to make sure I don't miss moments like that in future videos. Good catch! Thanks for letting me know you'd be interested in a spoiler free version. I'll keep it in mind! I plan on at least two more videos on TLOU, and future ones for TLOU2, as well.
@@madkurious Thank you for your thoughtful reply and for taking the feedback positively. It was a fantastic video and thank you for sending me a message regarding the follow up video, I’ll be sure to check it out! It’s a little sad knowing that the series is coming to an end very soon, I think they have done a great job even though there are a lot of differences. Looking forward to purchasing TLOU1 on PC soon, so I can relive the adventure all over again in stunning graphics and new gameplay features. Have a great day 👍
Such an amazing video!! It really is crazy that at seven, I was watching playthroughs of the game and now I’m seventeen. Tlou still has the biggest chokehold on me and recently, I’ve even written an essay on why the game is a masterpiece lmao😭 Seeing the game and community evolve has been a journey and it’s about to get so much bigger with the hbo adaptation
This game will stand the test of time. I played it over 15x. I remember when I first got the first one after it was release and got my a** whooped so I didn’t play it again until a yr later. 😩
I love the game because I remember hiding behind the sofa watching my dad play it when I was 7. I've adored it since. I used to love it for the scenery and cool enemies. I'm now 16 and whilst I still admire those two aspects, I also enjoy playing the game, completing new challenges, and rewatching the story, I love it so much. Currently on my 8th run on Tlou2, and I have completed the first game about 11 times. I love tlou so much.
Loved this video. The themes in the game and show make you feel things you're not expecting with a zombie show. The amazing character studies throughout are another big deal for a video game.
It really does! The wide range of difficulty levels + accessibility options + the specific features for challenge runs in the Remake really make it a well-rounded game for a variety of gaming preferences.
I always think how lucky David was that Ellie killed him only moments before Joel arrived. Can you even imagine what Joel would have done to David had he gotten his hands on him?
The last of us brings out the best and the worst out of people in a game about humanity and how far we will go. That is high praise. I enjoy the conversation it sparks about everything in life. I love how grounded it is and how real it feels to play, when i play this game i dont skip cutscenes it feels absolutely criminal to do so. Every cutscene, imo is crucial. The interpretations of what the stories are about and how it factors into our own lives are why i continue to obsess about it. They are both experiences that i would encourage anyone to play at least once.
You get it! It makes us consider our own beliefs, as only the best stories can do. The players I know of that skip cutscenes enjoy the gamemplay elements of the game that add so much to the overall experience. They break it down and explore the game in ways that take serious dedication. I personally think the best experience is when you put it all together, but it really says something about this game that fans can love 'just" the gameplay or "just" the story--as we're seeing with the show.
Thank you, Odd! That is a huge compliment. I'm working on a ton of weekly videos, going over a ton of amazing games (and some that, don't quite hit--not every game can be a win), and I'm planning at least two more on TLOU, along with future videos on TLOU2.
man, this game. I can't say anything about it that's not been said a million times. it's my favorite game, ever. This is the game that made me want a kid of my own someday, despite hating the feeling previously. My favorite part of the whole game is the winter section. That's when everything goes wrong, everything falls apart. Joel is out of it from his stab wound, Ellie has to live on her own fighting for her life alone for the first time, facing her worst fears of being alone for good if Joel doesn't make it, having just come off of Tommy's where Ellie finally admits she cares about Joel, and Joel not returning those feelings in words but with actions. Then there's David, which is enough for Joel to get up, despite his injuries, and fight through a small army just to get her back to finally find her off the back of probably the biggest trauma she'd ever faced, maybe ever will. And him calling her "baby girl", just like he did to Sarah when she died. this game has no right to make me feel the things it does. And i fully believe Joel was right when he saved Ellie. Maybe there was a way to do it that didn't involve killing, but at that point i was right along side Joel, just wanting to save her and not caring who got in the way of that. I think he's right, and the best i've heard explain why was by GamingWins, if you want to go watch that explanation, the video is "Everything Great About The Last of Us", and the timestamp is 43:09. the gist of it being that the world goes on, and we have no control over it. Even if we did and found a cure, someone's life shouldn't be sacrificed to try. We have dangers all around us all the time, but we have rules in place to stop them from becoming a problem. Cars are dangerous, so we have seatbelts and don't allow people to drive drunk, now we have infected, so we build up walls, have people to defend them, and each pick up the responsibilities to continue that life until it inevitably gets easier. There will be people to not listen to those rules and laws that are put in place, and sadly that will cost their lives, but that's true now, in real life. People drink and drive, they do things that might not get them killed, but might get others killed or put them in danger, despite common sense dictating they shouldn't. So at 20 years after the apocalypse' start, we should think more about how we're gonna live through it, and less how we want to put things back to the way they were.
Thank you for sharing this! I just went to watch that portion, and that is such a good point. I hadn't thought much about the fact that they shouldn't attempt to go back, they should accept reality and build society from there. It's an interesting concept. I think with anything that causes us a high risk and society, considering an alternative route could be important, but at the expense of any one life in order to extend the lives of others, is that worth it? It's not quite the "universality" decision a surface analysis makes it out to be. Thank you for giving me something to muse on as I develop a couple more videos about this amazing game!
Im so happy that TLOU tv show is bringing this brilliant story to broader audience. There´s also one thing i have been thinking about... lets say they make vaccine. Then what? Will they give it to people they have been killing (and they have been killed by) for 21 years? I dont think so. Great video btw
It's really such a good thing! People deserve to have this amazing story, and the more popular the series is, the more likely we are to get more of it. That is such a good question. They'd give it to "their own" first, and it would become a mess from there. We can only hope we get to explore that in the future. I have my own idea for how I'd like a 3rd story to go--most of us probably do.
Great video. While I was watching I was like "h'm, haven't seen this channel yet. Let me check into it" and saw only 472 subs?!? This channel is gonna blow up soon and I'm glad I got in at the ground level. Keep up the good work!
I thought I'd give your video a look-see, as it was recommended to me by TH-cam. I was astonished to find you have less than 400 subscribers. But then I saw you made this channel only last year. Needless to say, I feel that if you keep up content like this, _you'll have subscribers by the droves._ So, keep it up. Everyone starts somewhere. _Now Subscribed._ 🙋🏼♂️
Thank you so much! I’ve done far more live-streaming and writing than video production, but am really enjoying this art form as well. I did a few test videos last year, and have finally started weekly videos with this “answering life’s biggest questions through video games” project. This is just the beginning, and I really appreciate the encouragement!
The HBO show reminds me of Lost. Great characters under extreme science fiction influenced stress and circumstance. We come for the spectical and stay for the heart and soul of the characters.
Your narrative, the editing...for a moment I thought you had 400k subscribers, then realized it is only 484! But worry not, you will get there. With such quality content, how not?
It's because of humanity. This is a story that many can rely to in their lives. I for one can rely to it. I struggled 15 years to keep my ill mom alive. We went out of desperate moments that seemed impossible to overcome. Yet we managed 15 more years together, grasping to survival like a castaway on a cliff. So I can relate deeply with that guy struggling to keep the child alive. Forget the zombies. This is a great novel about human life and it's meaning.
Both the game and series are fantastic. l've owned every variant of the game and I will be buying there series once its released. It's difficult to pinpoint what keeps me interested in this game. Joel is a hard man who feels he has nothing left to give the world. he just goes on in survival mode until he is ready to love again. The interactions between Ellie and Joel are emotional, even early on where he is being cold and she is being a typical teenage girl. Regardless of how Joel feels about Ellie, his primary aim seems to be about protecting her innocence. she is after all a similar age to Sarah and he failed to protect hers. As a person and a parent, Joels behaviour towards Ellie is exactly what you'd want to see given the circumstances. You cannot expect him to love her but any decent person would try their best to protect her. Characters aside, this is a beautifully crafted gaming environment. I remember watching a video that compared the last of scenery to modern day Chernobyl with all praise going to naughty dog. Everything from the bomb sites to inner city foliage growth is perfect and depicts how live may possibly go on without the human race. The music in both part one and two really does help to set the scene. Although the acoustic notation guides us through various emotional states, I also like the fact that this could possibly be a commonly used instrument in a return to the dark ages apocalypse, which may also be a factor in why it became a shared interest of Joel and Ellie. There isn't any other game out there that I have gone back to again and again. The last of us is a gift and a revolution in story telling . If you haven't played the game but watched the series then go for it. the series will not spoil the game and vice versa. enjoy.
@madkurious seriously, first time I played the game there were several moments where I was overwhelmed with emotion. Sam and Henry for one. But when you're carrying Ellie through the hospital, damn!!! The music only added to it. I was sobbing during that game play!!!
@madkurious pt 1 - 10/10 Pt 2 - 8-/10 I did enjoy it BUT I found myself rushing through the Abby game play. Also, the first one I've done several play throughs. Every level except grounded. 2nd one I played once and don't really feel the need to play it again. Mostly because it was soooooo depressing!!!
Enjoy!! It’s a journey. Thanks for your interest in me making a video on Part II! I’ll be replaying live on stream sometime soon after Season 1 of the show ends, and will make a couple videos after that replay! It’ll be my 3rd full playthrough and I’m so excited to revisit it.
I've learned speedruning for about half the game and it really helped when I did my grounded and nonstop playthrough runs. It's so fun to get to know all the ins and outs of the game.
@@madkurious i got into this stuff over lockdown and have found them mostly enjoyable, no worries dude good luck for the future and keep making awesome videos
Very neat video, I enjoyed your style. I'm curious to your opinion towards Part II, as I got around to it a few months ago and found it to be a much more dense, emotionally challenging, grand, and dark epic of a story. Personally I like it more than the original. I played TLoU Remastered on PS4 back around the time 2 came out, and was mostly carried by the shocking ending and how well the story builds to it. The gameplay felt stiff and uncomfortable to me compared to games that came out around it, but the Part 1 remake changed all that. While the current $70 price is too much, I found the AI and other small improvements Part I Remake has to drastically elevate the game in my eyes, and having it be visually more consistent with Part II was just a bonus. I'd recommend it to everyone once the price drops.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really enjoy Part II. I've played it 2.5 times and watched others play it a few times, as well. There are some problematic character decisions in my mind--in both games to be honest. But that doesn't detract from the amazing experience in each game. For instance, I really dislike one of the playable characters in Part II, but love her gameplay. A game doesn't need to be perfect to be an immense experience, and in my mind, TLOU2 is one of the best games I've ever played. Will eventually be making some videos on it too! Need to do another playthrough first, I think. The Remake definitely has a smaller audience. As someone who does at least one annual playthrough of the game these days, I really appreciated the AI changes and upgraded graphics. I've already played through the new one twice (the gameplay for the majority of this video was a live, nonstop playthrough, last month). I'd imagine it's also great for all the new players that will be trying it out because of the show.
Because the writing, the acting, the cinematography and the sets are just very well done. Even though it is a zombie show, it's not like any zombie show you've ever seen or watched. It's awesome.
Thanks so much! 500 is exactly halfway to the number of people I need to monetize on here, and I currently create for a living, so this means a lot to me!
Thanks! This is my very first video (aside from a few tests a year ago), but I come from live-streaming and writing worlds. I'm just starting weekly video essays on video games, so should only be up from here. Appreciate the compliment!
I had never played the game before until I picked up a PS5 last year. Wow! I was blown away by the story telling and the incredible graphics. I immediately played through part 2 afterwards and now I’m enjoying the HBO adaptation. Incredible television!!
Ah, welcome to the TLOU world! If you get the craving to play again any time soon, PS+ on PS5 includes the Classics Collection and should include the Remastered version. Might be worth a playthrough to enjoy the quirky AI style for an experience slightly different than your first!
Summer of 2013 I was 22 I’ve played lots of Naughty Dog games and I really liked the Uncharted Games. But when I played Last Of Us it just blew me away yes the story is fantastic and the chemistry between Ellie and Joel is what a lot of people love. That’s why the shows doing so well because they captured exactly what the game was like to play.
The show has captured a lot of the essence of the story. There's much to unpack with the decisions between the two, and there have been a few improvements that have blown me away. The Ellie and Sam scene, for instance, was absolutely genius. They added a strong bit of agency and likability (which I had been nervous about them being a bit slow on until that episode) for her character, while also providing a reminder that made up for some of the lack of depth that the gameplay added. It's pretty intriguing to analyze which pieces they picked.
And if you want to know how powerful the story is for The Last Of Us? Over Christmas ('22) my 75 year old mother came to visit. One evening she said there was nothing on tv she wanted to watch. So I said, alright, I am going to play The Last Of Us Part 1. Then something crazy happened, I played all the way through Part 1 and 2 and she sat on my couch and watched it every second, becoming emotionally attached to the characters and even discussing the narrative with me. She fell in love with Ellie, then Joel, initially hated Abby, and by Abby Day 2, she's rooting for Abby. Now if a story from a video game can keep the interest and attention of a 75 year old woman who has never played a video game in her life--then you know it is special.
This is such a beautiful story, thank you for sharing. Games are for everyone, and watching them is so much fun, as well. That sounds like such an unexpected and amazing bonding experience.
I'm older than dirt and never played video games in my life despite buying my kids and grandkids the machines and videos going back to nintendo, sager genesis and X Box blah, blah, blah. Ok, i might have tried them once or twice but have zero knowledge of The Last of Us and if not for the quality shows H.B.O. puts out i would have never watched this fantastic show. This series blows my mind! Totally obsessed. Great job on your first video MADkurious. Learned a lot!
Thank you so much! Even older than dirt, you can become a gamer anytime, if you choose to be. There's so much variety out there. But I know plenty of people who enjoy watching games and reviews/analysis on them without playing them. Games really can be for everyone. I'm glad to meet someone who found their way here from the show!
Thank you! Sennheiser HD599s. Highly recommend. I chose comfort first, then by sound quality--that way long streams aren't uncomfortable. This particular set is open-back. I love the soundscape of open-back, but if you live in a place with noise or where you're trying not to create much noise (someone else in the same room as you can here a bit of sound from them), you may need noise-cancelling instead. I actually have an affiliate link if you happen to purchase through their website! pillar.io/madkurious/sennheiser
My wife gets annoyed that I sometimes know what is coming in the TV series, was and is my joint top game ever, the underrated( mainly by the critics) days gone is the other one,I actually think that would make a great tv series.
True but unfortunately days gone doesn’t get enough love we won’t even get a sequel because they didn’t sell enough copies at release so I don’t think we’ll ever get a TV show or movie
Amazing breakdown of the game. The last of us part I and II are my favorite games of all time the complexity and nuance of the story and characters, especially Ellie are so masterful. Hope you get to cover/ play Part II (that's if you haven't played it yet) and hear your take on it. It's tragically beautiful and will not leave you for a while.
Thanks so much! I’m happy to hear you’re interested in my take on Part II. I plan to replay it on my livestream soon to make videos on! It’ll be my 3rd full playthrough.
amazing and wonderful video my friend, look forward to more of these, keep up the amazing work youu beyond talented, awesome, inspiring, wonderful and incredible in everyway human being :}
Thank you!! I just started, and words of encouragement mean the world. I’ve been having so much fun working on my next videos. Can’t wait for you all to see them🔥
Bruh I had a dream about Ellie even tho I never played the game plus her personality was way different than that in the game, she was more of a patient and collected type of girl and possibly more mature cause she knew how to talk her way around with people like having a mini chat about life and I was either older than her, younger or same; couldn’t tell in the dream and I’m ngl it left me bittersweeted.
I always thought the ending could have been avoided had they simply woken up Ellie and asked her what she wanted. The Fireflies took away her agency by deciding to do the surgery without her consent, but Joel also took away her agency by not getting the Fireflies to ask her. It should have been her decision.
a bunch of grown adults ending a kids life in order to save the people THEY care about, and themselves. Least they could do is ask her, literally they got what they deserved. Marlene and company are as dumb as they get
I've always thought things like racism or discrimination couldn't be solved in the realm of politics. And this game and the polarizing reaction to a decision (that for all we know) damns the entire world, confirms that. It's not a toss up, Joel is the villain. We just like the man.
@@jonfreeman9682 I disagree. He fought for his right as a father. I think we all know what decision she would have made. If we dont, we agree her choice in the matter was taken.
@@nubiancaynes2128 yeah that was the whole point of part 2 where Ellie wanted to give her life for the cause and felt robbed of her destiny but Joel didn't agree being protective and all. In a way Joel is the villain as everyone wanted a vaccine and he took that away from everyone and humanity itself. Not only that but Joel killed the only doctor who could develop the vaccine and killed Marlene and everyone else.
@@jonfreeman9682 I felt the same way. I think the debate stems from the assumption that a villain must be inherently bad, but real life just doesnt work that way. And as far as relationships and human emotion, Last of Us is as real as it gets.
@@jonfreeman9682 Joel only saved Ellie because Ellie reminds him of his daughter. If he escorted a grown man who was immune he would not have been as protective.
This is a good question. It's a pretty standard zombie show so can't understand why it's all the rage. Never played the game but saw a video summary of the game and it's a good story in an apocalypse backdrop. The HBO show is pretty good so far and is like TWD.
If I were just hearing about The Last of Us for the first time, I would also call it "just a pretty standard zombie story", but coming from someone who normally avoids overdone premises, the game has a lot more to it than just a good story. The essence of it, that I explain in the video, is what makes it so powerful, if the story is told well, as it was in the game. The show? I won't make any final decisions until it's finished.
@@madkurious That's true. The game allows you to play different characters seeing the story from opposing POV with complex motivations and unusually for a game there's no villain here. I never played the game but saw videos of the game which shows good combat mechanics and rich character development lending to an immersive experience. I think the show did a good job translating the game but I'm not sure the show itself would have so much appeal if it weren't for the fanbase from the game. So if there's no game and just the show came out then it might not have been such a huge hit.
Hi Aeris! Thanks for asking. I will absolutely be doing at least a couple on TLOU2. I'm going to do another playthrough soon on stream, around the time Season 1 of the show ends. I will be making some then. Thanks for the support.
Love this game it is my most favorite game of all time. It in my eyes is perfect it is the most replayed game I have ever played. I love it to its core and always jump back in to play if it is the multiplayer on the ps4 remaster or the story on the ps5 remake. Just to put it out there I played this game since 2014 when it dropped for ps4. I watched a entire playthrough from various TH-camrs in 2013 when I first came out. The reason I never played it in 2013 is because I didn’t have a ps3. I greatly regretted that. That’s my little story with the love I have for this game.
Ah! I have a similar story. My first playthrough was actually the PS3 port on PS4, since I also never had a PS3. All of the iterations have been beautiful. Glad to meet other huge fans of it!
For a spoiler-free video on The Last of Us to share with anyone you think might be interested in this amazing story (or for those who want to officially decide to throw The Last of Us out the window for having to see it mentioned everywhere): th-cam.com/video/1fk0mMAMKbo/w-d-xo.html
Why do you love The Last of Us?
You could be great but I just don’t see you getting there with these type of videos
I think you nailed it. It's a beautiful story. It's a real pity the story in TLoU2 so, so bad. From Shakespeare to she-hulk in a single step. It blows my mind that they would put so much effort into building the world, only to ruin it with a mindbogglingly bad narrative.

You did a great job at describing why it is so great. The 2nd game continues the tradition really well. Though its a lot, darker and painful.
to think i was 12 when this game first came out, and has had me by the balls since, Great vid MAD
Few mediums keep us coming back to a story over and over again for an entire decade. Video games are truly special, and this one has so much hype for a reason. Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Yo same, and i got the game for the multiplayer. I didn’t even know it was a zombie game.
"i was 12 when this game first came out" That just scares the shit out of me. Look at it this way, in my eyes, you're Ellie. Weird, right?
I was 16. Same here. 10 years and it’s so fucking engraved
@@TangoNevada i’ve never had a game catch and keep my interest for as long as TLOU has its crazy
No one.
Love this! The power of games, especially masterpieces like this, can change our lives for the better. Glad to meet others who feel the same!

Ellie is my favorite fictional character of all time
Right? Ellie seriously feels like a real person. The writing it takes to do that--incredible.
I've never played a second of either game, but I've followed the story since the first. Really digging the HBO series.
Yep. Part 2 elevated art, not just video games. It was so beautiful in every way, ESPECIALLY the story
Part 2 was pretty brutal.

Being 8 years old, playing & watching the game. I fell in love. Now 18, still love the game. To the point where I quote it to this day.
I love that! There are so many meaningful quotes and moments. So glad to connect with others who love it too.
8 years old? O.o How, why, where were you parents?!
@A C my parents don't speak English and was always working. My eldest brother watched over brother and i while we study English I had learnt about the game and had seen someone play so I got the game myself. My upbringing was more mature than most.
8 years old is too young to be playing this game my dude. It's not meant for children.
@Abstract yeah I know, but I grew up playing games since I was like 2, whether with my brothers or watching them play. But still doesn't excuse it ay
Cause it’s a masterpiece that very few games ever achieve, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions, both part 1 & 2 are perfect as far as I’m concerned.

THIS IS SO KIND. Thank you. I really appreciate the words of motivation!
Been gaming since the Atari days and TLOU isn't a game it's an experience! Masterpiece in story writing!
Thank you for the smile, nostalgia, anxiety and tears I got from this video :)
I'm so glad. Thanks for watching!
Because its one of the best examples of a confluence of art forms there's ever been.
It's the Bowie of games.
I love this way of looking at it! It’s beautifully made.
MAD, you crushed this. Love the content.
Thanks, Fancy Justin!!
This game series actually saved my life I didn’t want to be around when I was 13 and I played this game and I thought about a lot
I just finished the last of us remastered and it was a roller-coaster ride and one of the best games I have ever played. I just ordered part 2 from Amazon for $24. Eagerly waiting to play it.
Any changes in remastered? Or just same game with barely any improvements.
Hope you enjoy/enjoyed Part II! It's a journey. I have some videos planned for that, as well.
For me it's the infected. They just fascinate me so much. And I love myself some of that brutal gameplay.
Oh, I love that! The infected are so intriguing. Have you played TLOU Part 2? They expand the infected lore in it, and the gameplay.
Played the first and second part back to back around 15 month ago! Still to this day i am asking myself '' what the hell did I do to myself?''
It had such an impact on me I feel like I can't enjoy any other game.
After 15 month I'm still sitting and think about the story and watching people sharing their opinion on it!

I have a lot of other games I enjoy, but I crave this series regularly. The popularity is for good reason.

Thanks so much! I just started on TH-cam, and that means a lot!
Great writing and great video! I still remember playing the OG game back in middle school with friends in sleepovers almost 10 years ago. It's a great feeling to now be an adult seeing a live action recreation of the game's writing. Really glad TH-cam is showing me more smaller channels like yours!
Thank you for the support! It's amazing how much TLOU content we're getting now after so many years.

Wow, you nailed it. Well done. I agree with all of this and it really represents my experience.
Thank you!! I'm glad to find others who feel the same about it.
I’m sure you love it too I just wish you mentioned it 🙏
I would be keen on a spoiler free version so I could share with others who I’m trying to “convince” watching the show 😢
I’ll subscribe in hoping to see 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Tlou still has the biggest chokehold on me and recently, I’ve even written an essay on why the game is a masterpiece lmao😭 Seeing the game and community evolve has been a journey and it’s about to get so much bigger with the hbo adaptation
That's awesome that you've written an essay on it! Keep up the writing if you love it--never know where it might take you
This game will stand the test of time. I played it over 15x. I remember when I first got the first one after it was release and got my a** whooped so I didn’t play it again until a yr later. 😩
Haha it's like that sometimes! After 15x, you probably hardly remember how you struggled in it.
That's such a fun memory!
@@madkurious it is! Definitely one of my fav aspects of my childhood 😌
Loved this video. The themes in the game and show make you feel things you're not expecting with a zombie show. The amazing character studies throughout are another big deal for a video game.
They really are! I'm on a search for games with similarly amazing characters and stories, but TLOU really is something special.
Well put!!! Played it off the ps3 and been in love with it ever since
An OG! Thank you!
I adored both entries it just hits the spot in the story-world building department and gameplay is satisfying in some difficulties...
I needed this to be like an hour longer.
Bravo
Thanks so much!! Have so many awesome games planned for this. Appreciate the support
I thought I'd give your video a look-see, as it was recommended to me by TH-cam. I was astonished to find you have less than 400 subscribers. But then I saw you made this channel only last year. Needless to say, I feel that if you keep up content like this, _you'll have subscribers by the droves._
So, keep it up. Everyone starts somewhere.

They get you in with the premise, keep you in with the story!
Your narrative, the editing...for a moment I thought you had 400k subscribers, then realized it is only 484! But worry not, you will get there. With such quality content, how not?
Thank you so much! I just started, but I’ve been live-streaming, writing, and studying TH-cam for years. Appreciate the support!
Lone Wolf and Cub has been around forever, it never gets old : D
Love a good endearing trope!
First played the last of us in 2014, I can safely say that I haven’t found anything like it since.
I'm actively looking for something that can compare.
@@madkurious I gave up once I realised it wasn’t possible.
This!! We go in for a fun game, and stumble into a phenomenal story about humanity. Thank you for sharing your story.
If you haven't played the game but watched the series then go for it. the series will not spoil the game and vice versa. enjoy.
Spot on description! Such a beautiful series.
Amazing video! Subscribed👌🏽

You have a nice voice
Appreciate it!
Damn, you made me tear up with this vid!!!
This means the world, thank you! So happy to meet others who feel because of games like that, as well!
@madkurious seriously, first time I played the game there were several moments where I was overwhelmed with emotion. Sam and Henry for one. But when you're carrying Ellie through the hospital, damn!!! The music only added to it. I was sobbing during that game play!!!
@@shahfacekillah It's amazing how much it hits! The storytelling is flawless. Were you a fan of Part 2, as well?
@madkurious pt 1 - 10/10
Pt 2 - 8-/10
I did enjoy it BUT I found myself rushing through the Abby game play.
Also, the first one I've done several play throughs. Every level except grounded.
2nd one I played once and don't really feel the need to play it again.
Mostly because it was soooooo depressing!!!
I LOVED this video and I’d love to hear your thoughts on Part II. I’m about to play it for the first time and people have very interesting thoughts
Enjoy!! It’s a journey. Thanks for your interest in me making a video on Part II! I’ll be replaying live on stream sometime soon after Season 1 of the show ends, and will make a couple videos after that replay! It’ll be my 3rd full playthrough and I’m so excited to revisit it.
I speed run the game to still practicing more
I've learned speedruning for about half the game and it really helped when I did my grounded and nonstop playthrough runs. It's so fun to get to know all the ins and outs of the game.
Because the show came out and the first one was a master class in story telling.
Absolutely! I haven't decided if the show is yet, as well.
look forward to listening to you again, good work enjoyed it
Thanks so much! Just started weekly videos.
Great video
Thank you!!
Because the writing, the acting, the cinematography and the sets are just very well done. Even though it is a zombie show, it's not like any zombie show you've ever seen or watched.
It's awesome.
Agreed! Zombies are so prevalent in stories and games, but TLOU does something really special with it.
The soundtrack is so calming
I've found versions online before that plays rain sounds over it, and it is somehow even lovelier.

Thank you for the kind words!! I appreciate that. And I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I had never played the game before until I picked up a PS5 last year. Wow! I was blown away by the story telling and the incredible graphics. I immediately played through part 2 afterwards and now I’m enjoying the HBO adaptation. Incredible television!!
It's OK
No lie i been obessed with the game, now that the show dropped I'm a whole addict out here 🤣
Yes!! I'll consume anything TLOU. They have me.
I'm older than dirt and never played video games in my life despite buying my kids and grandkids the machines and videos going back to nintendo, sager genesis and X Box blah, blah, blah.

What type of headphones do you use? And ur videos are amazing btw
@Heisenberg Not an avid gamer, but would love a sequel to days gone but like you say that's very unlikely if ever going to happen 😢😢😢😢😢😢
You're not the first one in the comments to mention Days Gone! I'm wondering if I should move it up higher on my "maybe" list for the year.

100% agree, and I have a video planned exploring this exact thought. I'll be releasing it within the next couple of weeks!
a bunch of grown adults ending a kids life in order to save the people THEY care about, and themselves. Least they could do is ask her, literally they got what they deserved. Marlene and company are as dumb as they get
Great video!
Thank you!!
I play the game in Grounded Mode, but I've never been Obsessed with TLOU 1 or 2.
Fun! I've done 1 on Grounded, but not 2 yet. These are great games for some challenging stealth and combat gaming.
I've always thought things like racism or discrimination couldn't be solved in the realm of politics. And this game and the polarizing reaction to a decision (that for all we know) damns the entire world, confirms that. It's not a toss up, Joel is the villain. We just like the man.
But Joel saved the girl and believed in the rights of one girl vs the lives of many.
Nice video i love the last of us part one can u do the part two it divided the fandom but i think it was very well done from a storytelling standpoint
Hi Aeris! Thanks for asking. I will absolutely be doing at least a couple on TLOU2. I'm going to do another playthrough soon on stream, around the time Season 1 of the show ends. I will be making some then. Thanks for the support.
It's a fantastic story.
It really is!
I was 13 when the game came out.
