I was using The Ordinary glycolic toner a few years ago for underarm odour (I've never liked wearing deodorant) and it gave me post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation haha. I had no idea what was happening and spent way more time figuring it out on PubMed than I cared to. Dr. Dray, It's so good to see someone like you finally talking about how this can happen when splashing actives around willy-nilly!

I’ve used the dove even tone deodorant for years and it has always worked wonders for my dark underarms. I started learning about skincare about 3 years ago and never thought to look at that deodorant, but I finally did, and I realized that it has vitamin b3 on the front of the label, which I now know to be niacinamide!! I assume that’s the ingredient in the deodorant that helps with the darkness, and it has really worked for me!

@@21972012145525You can also use niacinamide serum or cream for the face. That's what I do, but use it at night since sweat can make your underarms feel slimy. Put it on clean underarms then wash it off in the morning. Once a week is enough for me since too often can lead to irritation. It does take a while though, maybe about 3 months depending on how dark they are to begin with. This only works for darkening due to chafing or irritation due to shaving.

My mother always told me I had dark underarms because I was dirty and didn’t wash myself properly. So I scrubbed and scrubbed my skin until it hurt. Needless to say it only made it worse. I’ve tried a lot of products and some helped a little but mostly nothing has changed. I still have a lot of insecurities about myself.

I’m so sorry to hear the person who was supposed to help you love your body made you feel bad about it 😢 I have dark underarms too & as a child, for the longest time, I thought it was because I wasn’t scrubbing enough too. Now I realize that that is just the way my underarm skin looks (i have brown skin that is easily prone to hyperpigmentation), but sometimes I am self conscious that my armpits are darker & they don’t look smooth & even like all the models do. I wish you the best & all the body positivity ❤

That’s why you need to be careful about irritants, glycolic acid for some people can be very irritating and can worsen hyperpigmentation 😢

When i first came in short of of contact with that specific tik tok trend (aka i watched the trend only i did not partake 😅) i realized that and i was "wait a minute wait a minute" how is this going to address or claim the results it boasts about ? When in the first place I'm going to introduce an acidic ingredient like glycolic acid in an area like the underarm which there is skin to skin contact and as a result we have deeper penetration and the temperature is also rising which that has as a result the alteration of glycolic acid and making it more acidic more potent and capable in starting an actual irritation and make things worse. Going to a board certified dermatologist is the key in early diagnosis and treatment 😊❤. Thanks Doctor Andrea as always 😊❤.

Wow, I've been doing this off and on for a while, didn't even know it became a TT trend. I mainly use it to kill some of the bacteria that natural deodorants just can't handle (or maybe even make worse) but it only works for a day or 2. I tolerate the acid very well both on my face and under arms but this is making me certainly think twice about non-face applications, thanks!

During pandemic i stopped using deodorant & antiperspirants. I now use unscented soap to clean my body, and divide a pea-sized amount of The Ordinary's azelaic acid to both pits. Not really after it for litening, more for its antibacterial properties. It's non irritating to my skin, has very very slight lightening effect, and most importantly - no B.O.!
I'm trying an unscented Azelaic serum now from another brand and it has the same effects.

I have experienced this once though, and I decided as a first attempt (not researched!), to change ny antiperspirant spray deodorant to one of the thick cream type antiperspirants. So I did a sugar blood test for diabetes and the doctor told me I'm at the normal rate. But I didn't show her my dark underarm. I would say it's kinda like Acanthosis Nigricans which I don't know if it happens when I used to be obese or it really can develop even if my sugar level is not high. I used to use vitamin C deodorant and it helps a bit until I found out it contains aluminum (It only brightens it for awhile then there's no progress). I then used the ordinary glycolic acid and natural deodorant for awhile and just like the vitamin C the results are minimal. Can it occurs even though I'm not diabetic?
