Wait, what about the ultimate foreshadowing?! Remember when mantis was performing acupuncture but couldn't find the right nerve points due to his fur? And then Tai Lung beat the five by using a nerve strike to paralyze them all. But then when Tai tried to use the strike on po, it didn't work because he wasn't hitting the right nerve points! That is BEAUTIFULLY subtle foreshadowing!
“I stayed because every time you threw a brick at my head, or said I smelled, it hurt..but it could never hurt more than it did every day of my life just being me. I stayed because I thought, if anyone could change me...could make me... not me...it was you.” Idk why but that line gets me every time I hear it.
Its one of the more subtle things in the movie that po deals with he never wanted to really be who he was he wanted to be something he wasnt but as the movie progresses he molds more into that person he wants to be and only he is doing that yes he has help but its ultimately him that him who he is
I really liked how when Tai Lung finally got a hold of the scroll, he opened it and saw his reflection and said: "It's nothing." Which is honestly a really clever way of showing how insecure Tai Lung because of how he placed all of his self worth in being the Dragon Warrior. I just think it was a really nice touch
And then, when Po was explaining the scroll and said, "There is no secret ingredient, it's just you.", looked at the scroll, saw himself and smiled genuinely proved how content and proud he was to be himself and how much he had grown. This, and considering the fact that he had hoped so strongly that Kung Fu would change him into someone he COULD be proud of makes you realize that he really was destined to become the Dragon Warrior. Both Tai Lung and Po wanted to find purpous, both tried to find it in Kung Fu, both studied under the same teacher, but Tai Lung seeked it through an earthy item, Po wanted to find it in himself-that is the vital difference!
also stupid details I wanna add cuz I loved them - Shifu smiling and laughing during the dumpling fight and genuinely having a good time for the first time in the movie - Po using Tai Lung's tail (his weakness) against him in the final fight - Po vs Tai Lung looking at the dragon scroll: one smiling and confident and the other literally saying ''It's nothing" to his own reflection
When Po looked at it the first time he said “It’s blank” meaning he had yet to realize his true potential. When Tai Lung looked at it he said “It’s nothing” because he sacrificed everything to become the Dragon Warrior.
When translating essentially the word Shifu, it comes up as being a teacher or master. So when the 5 or any of us saying Shifu, we literally are calling him master, his name is literally master when translated, so when you say his title of Master, we literally are saying Master Master, just it’s as Master Shifu. Just a little bit of humor in his name choice for the character.
@@backyardshenanagins1720 also, funny thing, ik I'm a bit late, tai lungs name means something along the lines of 'great dragon' Also he's a snow leopard, which are natural predators of pandas and red pandas
The fact that Tigress shows the most disdain for Po could be a reference to how in many east Asian mythologies tigers are the sworn enemies of dragons and there are numerous artworks depicting dragons and tigers locked in an epic battle.
Holy shit, I didn't know that. Thanks for educating me, it's baffling how goddamn good the Kung Fu Panda series is with its real-world inspiration and attention to detail.
@@mistahchad220 It doesn't help that the design of Bowser from Super Mario Bros. is based on the mythical fusion deity, the Dragon Turtle. It is the coolest fusion I've ever heard, I even got a cool mini statue of it in my bedroom.
@@robbiewalker2831 Yo, neat! Mario is actually one of my favorite franchises, but I never knew that-- I've mistakenly heard that he was a "turtle-ox" from a couple random sources and never looked into it. That's even cooler. Also thanks lad, now I have a new fav DND monster, LOL
@@robbiewalker2831 Interesting detail, but how was this related to Kung Fu Panda or this comment chain? In which manner "it doesn't help" the situation?
Another CinemaWin that was missed. After it was revealed that the scroll was blank and Tigress asked who's gonna stop Tai Lung, Shifu was looking at the pond. The pond was agitated and he was seeing a reflection of himself while the dragon that held the Dragon Scroll was out of focus. Meanwhile earlier in the movie: *Oogway* : Water is like your mind. When it's agitated it becomes difficult to see
“I rotted in jail for twenty years because of your weakness” You knew I was the dragon warrior, you always knew, but when oogway said otherwise what did you do?!! What did you do!!! NOTHING!!” “Not your fault? Who filled my head with dreams!, who drove me to train until my bones cracked!, who denied me my destiny!!” “All I ever did, I did to make you PROUD!!!, Tell me how proud you are” Those lines are amazing
Same, and I absolutely LOVE that it's translation to spanish (my mother language) still manages to rhyme, make perfect sense and sound cool!!! "El ayer es historia El mañana es un misterio Pero el hoy es un obsequio Por eso se llama presente"
Another Win missed is that the final fight is the culmination of everything Po has been through in the entire movie not just from the things he learned from Shifu. The tree slap, Falling down stairs, The chopstick pan thingy, The fireworks rocket, the imagination of food thing, the acupuncture points, and the punching bag. All of it were shown earlier in the movie abusing Po but in the final match he used it against Tai Lung
Even better, Po using all the things that brought him pain against Tai Lung is a reflection of how he fights, literally bouncing back reflecting attacks back at Tai Lung. In the same way that he bounces attacks back, he "bounces" his struggles over the movie against Tai Lung
All of the main characters were animated with their actors's performances in mind, but Po was designed from Jack Black (personality + performance + person) from the beginning. Most of the time Black was just being his own goofy self. They had all the actors sitting on stools in case they (Jack Black & Jackie Chan) wanted to stand up and act it out physically, and Black would work himself into a red-faced sweat. The only other actor that I know of who is allowed to stand up while voice acting is Mark Hamill while he performs the Joker.
I've noticed a lot of Tigress and Tai Lung's movements are very liquid during most of their scenes and very sharp when they attack, kinda like real cats.
That's because Shifu trained them to utilise their abilities to their fullest. By teaching them how to master tiger and leopard-style Kung Fu. Obviously he didn't teach both techniques to both fighters, but it's very obvious which technique he taught which fighter. I also noticed something, Tai Lung and Tigress were pretty counter-intuitive in the fight, with Tigress occasionally getting the drop on Tai Lung until Tai Lung finally bested her, this makes a ton of sense. Tiger and leopard-style Kung Fu are very similar, near-identical, techniques. Only difference is that Tiger-Style is more head-on than Leopard-style, which is slightly held-back on strength, especially when faced against foes with similar martial-arts. So no wonder Tai Lung eventually got the best of Tigress, she could only prolong the inevitable for so long against someone with better training and experience.
I know I’m pretty late to this but I think a missed win and a great character moment for Po is when Tai Lung reads the scroll and not only does Po not move to take it back or stop him, he actually explains it to him to try to help him understand it. Throughout the movie we see him acknowledging the good in people but this moment shows that even after everything we know he knows about Tai Lung he’s still willing to give him one last chance. Just my thought
Also shows that he has no desire to "hog" the secret to himself, which is a good foreshadowing to the third movie where he spreads kung fu and the art of chi to the world again.
I think I actually read somewhere that the highest accomplishment in kung fu is actually when you manage to guide your enemy to a better path. Not sure how accurate that is but it makes total sense and falls in line with Po because that’s exactly what he tried to do for both Tai Lung and Shen. Dragon Warrior indeed! 💖
Also, fun fact: Tai Lung, drama queen that he is, actually waited in a tree for lightning to flash and Shifu to blink before appearing in front of him....JUST to have that badass entrance.
I don't know if you noticed it or not, but Tigress' eyes stay lit in the dark, while other character's eyes are darkened, which is realistic, because most cats' eyes glow in the dark
Their eyes don't "glow" per say. The light reflects off their eyes to give them a glowing eyes look. Same with doggos. This is likely a by-product of their night vision.
@@JaelinBezel this is not a byproduct of their nightvision, it IS their nightvision. they are able to reflect the smallest amount of light to be able to see a little combined with their other senses
To kind of echo what is stated by the two above: Cats and many other vertebrates have a tapetum lucidum on the interior of their eye; think of it as a mirror, light being reflected back to the retina makes it easier to see in low-light and is also why eyes look like they glow
Fun fact- I believe when Shifu says "I am at peace" towards the end of the movie, this marked the conclusion to his journey to inner peace which he referenced at the beginning of the sequel.
You’re right. Now that I think of it. This film is about Shifu finding inner peace, and in the sequel, it’s Po’s turn, so in a way, it carries over that theme and continues the story without feeling like it retreads the plot of the first film, which you could say is the entire second film in a nutshell.
I think it needs mentioned that his "character break" when he says "that IS bad news" is followed by a calm "if you don't believe" bit. Showing that he still doesn't consider it bad news, because he has faith.
you forgot the import part in between those 2 lines... "I am finally at peace." "So I should stop talking?" "If you can." *short pause* "You want to get something to eat?" *sigh* "Yeah"
Not only that, but it's probably more accurate to say that red pandas are "true" pandas, while giant pandas are panda-like bears, since red pandas were named such BEFORE the West knew giant pandas even _existed._
It's not derogatory because there's something wrong with being a bear, it's derogatory because he refuses to admit po has any real useful qualities as an individual: he's just another panda (at that point in time, according to shifu). He's not someone special, and he doesn't deserve to be distinguished from any other regular panda.
There’s one other detail in the movie that I’ve always thought was just so well done in hindsight: Oogway knows the dragon scroll is blank, so another reason why he didn’t let Tai-lung have it was because he knew Tai-lung wouldn’t except that the scroll was blank. He would’ve just assumed that they’re actually hiding it from him. Throw in the fact that with the scroll in his sites he becomes very single minded in trying to grab it. In both the flashback and his fight with Po, Oogway and Po were able to mess with him quite easily because they knew what he was after and to him everything else is secondary. If he had known that the scroll was blank at any point during any fight he actually would’ve been far more deadly and a lot less predictable.
It was said Tai Lung worked to exhaustion to make Shi fu proud. His entire goal was to become the dragon warrior and obtain the power of the dragon scroll. He had no plans on improving himself to better himself or help people. Ik this isn't the best example, but look at Mike Tyson. From the age of 13 he was constantly told he would become heavy weight champ of the world. He would wake up at 4 to go for runs and train tirelessly to make Cus D'Amato proud. Cus unfortunately passed away before Mike became champ. But after Mike became undisputed champ, he didn't know what to do. He didn't have any plans after getting the belts, his marriage was eating him alive, and he ended up doing hard drugs. Tai Lung is like Mike in this example. Now look at Po. He was fascinated by the history of kung fu. He was eager to learn to the point of being beat up both physically and mentally and yet he still continued. With the same eagerness too. Oogway saw that in him. Hell, he saw Po willing to fall a hundred or so feet just to see the masters at play. That's dedication. When it came time for Po to get the Dragon Scroll, he saw it as an honor. Not a reward. Po also knew he was thoroughly out classed in hand to hand combat. As was proven and only when Tai Lung lost control was when Po had the edge. Anger is a very good weapon when used correctly. Blindly following your anger like Tai Lung get's you several feet into the ground in some cases
I freaking love Kung Fu Panda. I love how it has different art styles, especially in the flashbacks. I love the characters, the story, the animation, the action, perspectives, design, dialogue, and the humor. It also makes sense.
“Why didn’t Oogway not say anything if he knew this was all going to happen?” Because as he also said “One often meets his destiny on the path to avoid it.”
My favorite line from this movie is Oogway saying, "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it." I mean, I use that line all the time now and I see it so many times in movies now. It's just so fantastic because it's true. Amazing wise words from the master.
You missed an opportunity here. "Who are you?" "Buddy... I... am the dragon warrior." "Him?! He's a panda, you're a panda. What are you going to do big guy? Sit on me?" "Don't tempt me." 10:49
Really makes me wonder really how old Shen is. Which should be strange cus it's Tai Lung that said the line but, Note, that Tai Lung knows what a Panda is, which means that his imprisonment happened before the attempted Genocide on the Pandas that sent them fleeing. Which means that All this shit that Shen's been doing took place in... OK 20 years is a pretty big timespan but still
@@moritamikamikara3879 Even after the pandas went into hiding, though, people who were born after their disappearance would have still _known_ what they were. It’s not like everyone suddenly would’ve stopped talking about them or all the pictures/paintings would have disappeared. It wasn’t like they were gone for hundreds of years.
@@mayeeshamusarrat6215 It's when Po says that there's nothing in the scroll, Shifu says he's not allowed to look at it... This implies that shifu himself didn't knew about the contents of the scroll... Funny part is that he look at it anyways and was like "There's nothing"
I love how everybody seems surprised when Po gets his ass kicked by the furious five, but just bounces back and is like “dude that’s awesome!” Like, you guys are surprised? This dude literally fell 1000 feet onto a stone surface and popped back up without a scratch when he got picked as the dragon warrior. His whole thing is ridiculous durability.
9:32 This was always one of my favorite parts. He could’ve scolded him and told him to pay attention, but he understands that po loses focus and accepts it so he gently brings him back to the matter at hand
Good character development; Shifu at the start of the movie would absolutely have hit him or yelled at him (probably both), but by this point he's learned to accept that all people are different in varying ways, and those differences aren't always a bad thing. They're what make all of us unique. In short: he let go of the illusion that he could control who his students truly are
Anakin was supposed to destroy the Sith but he joined the Sith. Then at the end he "killed" Palpatine and destroying the Sith, thus by avoiding his destiny he ended up fulfilling it. Though episode IX undoes this...
See, it would’ve worked better if episode 8 did what it was SUPPOSED to do which was stick with what 7 was trying to set up. Bottom Line, Always use the same Director for every movie in a trilogy, and NEVER use a director wanting to do his own thing. Rain Johnson might be better off for solo movies. NOT SEQUELS TO MOVIES!
I love Oogway a lot because he reminds me of Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back . Just the shear amount of wisdom he has and how he makes sense of the most simplest of things.
Can we talk about the fact that, when Po gets his ass kicked by Shifu, each times Po hits the ground, the Furious Five are being lifted off the ground, and just act casually as if nothing happened ? XD
I really love the scene of Oogway and Po talking under the peach tree. When you see Oogway with the other members of the Jade Palace, there is a sort of disconnect. The five and Shifu are costantly serious, worried about their training and about controlling themselves and the world around them. Oogway isn't, following with his belief that one must let go of the illusion of control, he's calm and accepting. And somehow, I feel like he and Po connect much better than he and all the others. I think it's because Po seems to have a sort of "live in the moment" attitude, which itself is close to Oogway's filosophy. Also, side note: Am I the only one who really thinks that, if Po had just asked, his Dad would have been happy to let him go see the furious five at the start of the movie? I mean, his room is full of Kung-Fu memorabilia, his Dad has to know how passionate he is about it. I don't know... I just love how they made Mr. Ping. It would have been so easy to make him into the asshole father stereotype who wanted his son to inherit the bussiness without caring what his son actually wanted. But instead, he's very supportive. I've heard people claim that he had no faith in his son when he put the apron on him during the evacuation, as doing that meant that he automatically asumed he had come home after failing. I saw it as "Welcome back, nothing has changed. You're still my son and there's always a place for you here!"
Wow, i never really thought about Mr Ping’s character like that. I’m glad to have read your take on it, it really is wonderful. The things you learn, eh? Hope you’re having a great day!
What's even crazier is that in the post-credit scene they show the peach tree that Shifu planted when he was talking to Oogway. Shifu had finally let go the illusion of control hence the growth of the peach tree (kind of like Po's growth into the Dragon Warrior).
Something I'd like to point out: Oogway saw Poe trying to get into the tournament, how could he, a literal master of everything kung fu and someone who has shown on multiple occasions his attention to detail, miss what was going on outside the walls? He was watching the walls from the moment he first noticed what was going on, waiting to see what Poe would do next and that's how he knew where to point to choose Poe!
HEY WAIT. When Po is throwing shuriken at the wall at around 0:45, the target is a yak. The only yak we've seen in KungFu Panda movies is Kai, the main antagonist of 3. Maybe not direct foreshadowing, but an interesting coincidence.
I'm pretty sure they constantly went back over the first movie frame by frame just so they could bring back details like that. Kai's sword(s) also appeared in Po's dream at the beginning of the movie. And his Dragon Warrior outfit too.
The future movies bring up quite a few moments of Po's dreams in the first as well, like jumping into a fight with kung fu masters, fighting an army of wolves, and of course, Kai being similar to the first guy that tells Po to chew "ON MY FIST", to which he subsequently beats up.
In the third movie, it has a much better representation of what the Wuxi Finger Hold does. It basically teleports the person being Wuxi'd into the spirit realm. Not really killing them, but there no easy way getting back into the mortal realm.
ThatOneGlaceon (SPOILERS) He didn't appear in the third movie, because when we see the main villain Kai, he has been taking the chi from everyone in the spirit realm and turning them into green gems. Once get got enough chi, he could return to the mortal plane.
This movie literally made me who I am today. I first saw it as a young child, and from that point until now, heading into college, I've been doing martial arts of a variety of disciplines
The confetti to snow transition is actually really brilliant. While everyone is celebrating Po becoming the Dragon Warrior, the snow reflects Shifu's feelings towards Po as well as Oogway not doing anything about the matter.
When the mentis was treating panda after broken bones and he said that it's hard to find the pressure points on po body also then at the end tailong pressure points attact didn't work
1:26 Something I really appreciate in this movie, as a martial artist myself, is the fact that they don't actually "yell" as they are approaching Shifu. Those yells are supposed to help you strengthen your techniques, so you really only do it right as you're delivering a punch, or a kick. Amazing performance
“I’m not a big fat panda, I’m THE big fat panda!” Edit: also you missed 2 wins on 11:17 and when Tai Lung punched Po to the ground Po hit the ground with real physics while Tai Lung hit the ground with Wile coyote physics because when Tai Lung is winning it gets more serious and real while when Po is winning it gets goofier because Tai Lung is serious and the bad guy and Po is a goofy panda oh and look at the illusion of master oogway on 1:49
Totally agree. If anything, it's still a favorite of mine. It just gives me a break from movies that try too hard or not enough, and fail miserably, effectively instilling my faith in cinema, as a whole.
One of the major details I love in this movie are the differences between the Shifu vs. Tai Lung Fight and the Po vs. Tai Lung fight. As you said, the music turns whimsical for Po's fight while it's intense for Shifu's fight. Also, the animation is very different. For Shifu's fight, it's serious, fast paced, and stays somewhat grounded in reality. For Po's fight, it's wacky, cartoonish and everything is stretched and brought to new limits.
My favorite part of the training sequence where Po actually learns Kung Fu is that Shifu actually seems to be enjoying it. It's been so long since he's actually had fun training a student and it's shown by his goading smirks and encouraging smiles that he's actually having fun training Po to become the Dragon Warrior.
I unfollowed CinemaSins and followed CinemaWins because filling myself with negativity, even for comedy's sake, all the time was giving me too much stress. Thank you for giving me the gift of stress relief in this increasingly trying world. ❤️
@@mikshinee87 CinemaSins isn't, CinemaSins has more often ignored context of the matter at hand to make 'satirical' sins. Many-a channels review CinemaSins content to debunk a lot of what CinemaSins says.
I'm not even gonna lie, this is one of my favourite films. The animation is simply incredible, the voice acting is superb, especially Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman who gave it their all and have amazing chemistry together, the soundtrack is so gripping and thrilling and has such a big presence, the comedy is just right for a kids film and the overall message is incredibly touching and heart warming. It's a fantastic movie, and the second and third one are just as good in my opinion.
7:59- there’s a detail you should have mentioned. Whenever Oogway is alive, the peach tree has leaves and fruit, but after he dies, the tree is barren and dead but still there. The tree symbolizes Oogway’s teachings. Even if HE’s no longer in the picture, his legacy and lessons still are
This movie has so many little details that flew over my head for the longest time. Like in the beginning where Po tells his Mr Ping that he was dreaming about noodles, and Ping is excited and says the noodle dream represents his destiny. While Po lied and he actually dreamt about fighting Kung Fu with the furious five, which was actually his destiny.
I actually love when Shifu kicks Po through the gates, and Viper and Monkey both comment on how Po's gonna come back. To me, there's almost a modicum of respect in their tone, like they are starting to realize there's more to someone than what meets the eye when they're able and willing to take such a monstrous beating and come back for more. To me, it's because of this that Viper scolds Mantis over his poor joke, because they see that even through the goofiness and what they perceive to be his complete inadequacy, there's something to be admired about the guy with the card stacked against him still putting up such a fight.
@@rjofusetsudzin8011 it was most likely intended and planned seeing as there was a focus on the physical level of Po's development in the first movie followed up by mental in the second and spiritual in the third. Seems like they knew the basic plot premise they wanted right from the start
give them props for at least not knowing this would be a hit but at least planning "ok if we make a sequel this is what it'd be about" Actually give Dreamworks props for having this Shrek/How to Train Your Dragon's sequels not deliberately planned but they leave one question that isn't crucial to their respective plots (why was Po raised by a Goose?, Where are Fiona's parents? What happened to Hiccup's mom and what was she like?)
One thing that makes Master Oogway's "That is bad news" line so much better is that he follows it up with "IF you do not believe the dragon warrior will stop him." Whether Oogway was genuinely caught off guard as his demeanor suggests or not, his second statement perfectly sums up the importance of faith and keeping problems in perspective.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I'm just gonna go ahead and add some of my own wins, simply because i love it so much!: -Both Tigress and Tai Lung have glowing orange eyes, while their fellow non-feline animals do not ( 3:45 and 5:02 ). It's a little detail, but it makes so much sense. I especially adore how intense Tigress' orange eyes are in the blue darkness. -Speaking of blue and orange, this movie is filled to the brim with great color theory. 12:23 is probably my favorite shot, the blue of Po's shadow blending into the blue of the pool, but also the blue details on the floor and the gold dragon in the water balancing the shot, leaving the whole background just 2 colors. The same thing happening at 12:17, with the details in the floor in the shadows looking gold, and the ones in the light looking blue. -No seriously, there is so many scenes with contrasting colors in this movie it drives me nuts. 6:30 The green of Oogway and the ground with the pinks of the tree and fruit, 7:02 the purple darkness and the yellow of the candles and Oogways power, 10:38 with the purple-ish of the interior and the yellow glow of dawn, purple and gold again at 15:20... Also 4:34 with the almost-black and red, even if they're "true" contrasting colors, it's just too good not to mention! I'm serious, every shot of this movie is a masterpiece in color theory. There is very few moments where you can't find one warm color and one cool color in every scene. -Shifu's ears at 15:21. It's such a cute little detail, the way they twitch and swivel around. There is not a lot of scenes where the characters get to act animal, but that is one of them. 7:40 too, with Tigress' pupils dilating and then her landing on all four. What I'm saying is, I don't blame you for wanting to see this movie again rather than go to lunch with your wife. It's just so, so, sooo good.
The thing about Po - well, one of the things about Po that make him a great character is how genuine he is. Dream sequence aside, he never acts like a predestined hero or individual with... any sort of apparent competence in anything, really. At the outset he's a normal guy who gets thrust into something bigger than himself, no small feat when you're a panda. And it really does start right after the dream sequence. Right from the beginning he's a huge kung fu nerd, and his attempted triumphant yell of "I LOVE KUNG FUUUUU!" is backed up the moment he stepped into the Jade Palace, overcome its awe at the pieces of history surrounding him. But that Pool of Sacred Tears Scene, the /moment/ he realises where he is, he's shocked for maybe three seconds and then his awe is palpable. And it's really at that point where he goes from "I wish I could do that" to "I can do it" and then at the end he fully steps into "I have done it." Just... beautiful.
One major thing: Oogways quote he says so subtly when Shifu sends Zeng is “One often meets his destiny on the road he tries to avoid it” or something like that, And the theme is just so fitting in not just this movie but all three movies, Shifu sending Zeng freed Tai Lung Po not wanting anything to do with the secret ingredient soup (or lack of interest in it) is exactly what solves the mystery of the dragon scroll, I’m telling you I love this trilogy (although 3 didn’t feel like a part of the franchise)
It continues in 2 with Po's family being hunted down because of a prophecy of "...being defeated by a warrior of black and white." which led directly to Po becoming the Dragon Warrior and ultimately thwarting Shen's vast ambition... in accordance with the prophecy. Again.
Three wins I love: In the opening dream, the huge horde of enemies forms the shape of a big monster Po's style of Kung Fu is modelled on Bear Style. The lines "I have come home, master"...."This is no longer your home, and I am no longer your master"
Just watch Ugway talk to Po as if he is some kind of blessing, and once you watch Kung Fu Panda 3 and see that the pandas trained Ugway before they disappeared really makes the conversations between these two heart warming.
3:15 is great foreshadowing. "The blade is so sharp that you can cut yourself just by looking at it." He's injured just by believing he would be. That's the wuxi finger hold, and the film itself in a nutshell.
Okay so Ive been meaning to ask this for a long time but I’ve never got up the nerve- could you take a look my favourite (also Dreamworks) movie? Rise of the Guardians. So many people turned away from it because of the gimmicky concept (myself included at first), but after watching it... well even years later it still holds dear to me as my favourite film and one that has almost defined my young adult years. It reminded me of my inner child at a time when I needed it most, and made me feel what the characters were feeling. As someone with autism, empathy is something I’ve always struggled with and yet this film managed to make me feel for the main character in a way I struggle to with most real people. I understand you’re very busy but if you could consider choosing it as something to get round to eventually I’d really appreciate it. Thank you for all you do regardless, A silent supporter ^^
It's a fun movie on its own right, it's entirely predictable (with the exception of the hidden backstory), but the plot itself is not that interesting. The fight scene I would personally say are surprisingly good.
10:20 On top of this being just a great and dramatic moment, it is also showing shi fu reflecting on who he is, what he thinks he did to turn tai lung into this monster, and how he knows that it is too late to change him back.
These are movies you NEED to discuss : 1. Prince of Egypt 2. Anastasia ( 1997 ) 3. Rise of the Guardians 4. Madagascar 3 5. Mr. Peabody & Sherman Edit: So many likes! Thank you!
Long time fan of your videos, but I rewatched this one and noticed you didn't really talk about the moment between Po and Shifu that happens at 7:16 where Po reminds Shifu that its Shifu's job to train Po, not Po's job to be trained, and that the failure is shared between them, that felt to me like an important piece in their relationship that leads into the next few scenes where Shifu changes his teaching style to match Po's learning style. Idk, random thought I felt like sharing, I love your videos! Keep up the wonderful work!
1:38 After this scene, when Shifu tells the Five what they need to improve on (tigress needs more ferocity etc), they're all qualities that Tai lung has, which are shown in the movie
Kinda wanted you to talk about tai long's motivation on why he was like that.. "not your fault? Who filled my head with dreams? Who made me train till my bones cracked, who denied me my destiny?"
Moving stuff. But Tai Lung's actions are still his. How he dealt with all of it was in a sense, wrong and he knew it. After theyre chat and Shifu's heartfelt "sorry" he cast it all aside. "I don't want your apology. I want my scroll."
Another big thing I like (Although I couldn't find it in 3), is the theme that the villain character is given one big chance to turn around (Tai-lung after hearing Shifu apologize, Shen twice: Once after being reminded of his prophecy, and after being defeated.) And both times they refuse it, leading to their fates being sealed.
This is one of my go to animated movies of all time, other two are Mulan and Shrek. But this, this has screenplay that is astounding, soundtrack and visual so great you don't think about them, because they are melted into it so perfectly. 0:42 - 0:47: Are we not going to talk about the foreshadowing to Kai's future appearance in Kung Fu Panda 3? Because that's actually Po's crude drawing of Kai! Also, 11:21 - 11:29: Yes, Po killed Tai Lung; No, Tai Lung is actually sent to the Spirit Realm; because according to Kung Fu Panda 3, the Wuxi Finger Hold (created by Master Wuxi in the Han Dynasty {206 B.C.-220 A.D.}) banishes people off to the spirit realm; however, it's a one-time use on mortals, as those who had the Wuxi Finger Hold on them before were already taken to the Spirit Realm and later became Spirit Warriors; in the case of Kung Fu Panda 3, Kai was sent to the Spirit Realm twice: the former done by Oogway upon banishment, and was stuck there for 500 years, and the latter done by Po, by wrapping his arms around Kai, and using the Wuxi Finger Hold on himself.
Never thought of it like that
Because to Tai Lung, he is basically "Nothing"
Oh my god my heart😭
@@Maya_hee I honestly thought his story was sad in a way already, this only makes it more depressing
OOF
And then, when Po was explaining the scroll and said, "There is no secret ingredient, it's just you.", looked at the scroll, saw himself and smiled genuinely proved how content and proud he was to be himself and how much he had grown. This, and considering the fact that he had hoped so strongly that Kung Fu would change him into someone he COULD be proud of makes you realize that he really was destined to become the Dragon Warrior. Both Tai Lung and Po wanted to find purpous, both tried to find it in Kung Fu, both studied under the same teacher, but Tai Lung seeked it through an earthy item, Po wanted to find it in himself-that is the vital difference!
also stupid details I wanna add cuz I loved them
- Shifu smiling and laughing during the dumpling fight and genuinely having a good time for the first time in the movie
- Po using Tai Lung's tail (his weakness) against him in the final fight
- Po vs Tai Lung looking at the dragon scroll: one smiling and confident and the other literally saying ''It's nothing" to his own reflection
Brilliance in every frame of this movie
When Po looked at it the first time he said “It’s blank” meaning he had yet to realize his true potential. When Tai Lung looked at it he said “It’s nothing” because he sacrificed everything to become the Dragon Warrior.
Fung fo XD :D This film is amazing,
When translating essentially the word Shifu, it comes up as being a teacher or master.
So when the 5 or any of us saying Shifu, we literally are calling him master, his name is literally master when translated, so when you say his title of Master, we literally are saying Master Master, just it’s as Master Shifu. Just a little bit of humor in his name choice for the character.

I’ve seen this movie so many times and I only just realised this when I watched it again today. Good observation.
I didn't catch it when I was a kid but I just rewatched it and noticed the hell out of it
Even better, Po using all the things that brought him pain against Tai Lung is a reflection of how he fights, literally bouncing back reflecting attacks back at Tai Lung. In the same way that he bounces attacks back, he "bounces" his struggles over the movie against Tai Lung
Another thing I didn't notice! I must rewatch this movie! It's so clever!

Oh yeah well when Mr Ping walks he uses his feet like a real duck.
And mantis throws Po around just like a real mantis would!
Lovely comment :)
It just adds more to an already well established and iconic character
Also shows that he has no desire to "hog" the secret to himself, which is a good foreshadowing to the third movie where he spreads kung fu and the art of chi to the world again.
I think I actually read somewhere that the highest accomplishment in kung fu is actually when you manage to guide your enemy to a better path. Not sure how accurate that is but it makes total sense and falls in line with Po because that’s exactly what he tried to do for both Tai Lung and Shen. Dragon Warrior indeed! 💖

I know red pandas aren't bears, but I always found it strange that Shifu constantly uses "panda" as a derogatory word. Shifu, _you_ are a panda.
It would've made more sense if he called him "bear" instead
Not only that, but it's probably more accurate to say that red pandas are "true" pandas, while giant pandas are panda-like bears, since red pandas were named such BEFORE the West knew giant pandas even _existed._
Leah Kent No...he's an adorable red panda
Yeah, he's even genetically closer to Po then anyone else. Bears and Red Panda's/Racoons diverged from the same species.
It's not derogatory because there's something wrong with being a bear, it's derogatory because he refuses to admit po has any real useful qualities as an individual: he's just another panda (at that point in time, according to shifu). He's not someone special, and he doesn't deserve to be distinguished from any other regular panda.
There’s one other detail in the movie that I’ve always thought was just so well done in hindsight:
Oogway knows the dragon scroll is blank, so another reason why he didn’t let Tai-lung have it was because he knew Tai-lung wouldn’t except that the scroll was blank.
TheROBLOCrafter that’s how I spelled it.
@@Nazo-kage It's Po my guy
Birdwithegg fixed that, I don’t know why I thought it was spelled differently at that time.
Nice take!

@bashirelshaikh793
Ah yes I remember that scene so well. It didn't add to the story but it makes the characters have so much depth
Something I'd like to point out:
Oogway saw Poe trying to get into the tournament, how could he, a literal master of everything kung fu and someone who has shown on multiple occasions his attention to detail, miss what was going on outside the walls? He was watching the walls from the moment he first noticed what was going on, waiting to see what Poe would do next and that's how he knew where to point to choose Poe!
You are overanalysing it, Oogway pointed at that direction by fate
@@Kotoamatsukami6910 Haha. No.
@@adivp7 haha yes
He also reacted to it during the tournament there was a brief glimpse of him looking a Po when he was using the tree to launch himself

Kai ' a yak?
@@an-animal-lover BaDumTiss
matt roberts Yes, that’s why Po made fun of Kai with the “Chitty Chitty Chat Chat”.
In the third movie, it has a much better representation of what the Wuxi Finger Hold does. It basically teleports the person being Wuxi'd into the spirit realm. Not really killing them, but there no easy way getting back into the mortal realm.
So Tai Lung got trapped in there? Did he appear in the third movie?
ThatOneGlaceon (SPOILERS) He didn't appear in the third movie, because when we see the main villain Kai, he has been taking the chi from everyone in the spirit realm and turning them into green gems. Once get got enough chi, he could return to the mortal plane.
Luke feuerborn You can actually see one of the rings he’s wearing is Tai Lung
Ryne Mcgriffin So Kai killed Tai Lung? Wow, that would’ve been an epic fight to see.
3rd movie defies that comment
I love Oogway in these flims. He's the best part of every scene he's in.
I wish he was in them more
I so want a full Oogway movie with a young Oogway.
The snow reflects the five as well.
"Sokka,it's not a sneak attack if you yell."
“I’m not a big fat panda, I’m THE big fat panda!” Edit: also you missed 2 wins on 11:17 and when Tai Lung punched Po to the ground Po hit the ground with real physics while Tai Lung hit the ground with Wile coyote physics because when Tai Lung is winning it gets more serious and real while when Po is winning it gets goofier because Tai Lung is serious and the bad guy and Po is a goofy panda oh and look at the illusion of master oogway on 1:49
Actually, it reflects their fighting styles, tai lung tanks attacks, po redistributes the shock
I love this movie, easily a childhood favorite of mine
Well, it still is for me. And will be forever.
Are you the same Kremit that wants J2G to heart their comment?
Totally agree. If anything, it's still a favorite of mine. It just gives me a break from movies that try too hard or not enough, and fail miserably, effectively instilling my faith in cinema, as a whole.
No it’s not a cookie

One of the major details I love in this movie are the differences between the Shifu vs. Tai Lung Fight and the Po vs. Tai Lung fight. As you said, the music turns whimsical for Po's fight while it's intense for Shifu's fight. Also, the animation is very different. For Shifu's fight, it's serious, fast paced, and stays somewhat grounded in reality. For Po's fight, it's wacky, cartoonish and everything is stretched and brought to new limits.
An Overwatch Analogy:
Tai Lung is Hanzo.
Shifu is...Genji, I guess.
Then Po comes in as freaking Junkrat. 😋

Even if HE’s no longer in the picture, his legacy and lessons still are
And there's a new peach tree growing now.
Oogway: master of patients and sincerity
Shifu: master of understanding and resource
Po: master of persistence and balance
Don't forget awesomeness ;)

I love the line "How are you gonna CHANGE this into the dragon warrior." Because at the end, Po didn't change. He grew.
Dang and that is what was said in KFP 3!! Wild😂😂😂
same thing
No win for Mr Ping’s hesitation when Po says “Sometimes I can’t believe I’m actually your son.” (Or something along those lines)?
it probably was not intedend and planned howeve it´s really cool to find this hints for second movie. Together with wolfes in the opening.
I'm just gonna go ahead and add some of my own wins, simply because i love it so much!:
-Both Tigress and Tai Lung have glowing orange eyes, while their fellow non-feline animals do not ( 3:45 and 5:02 ).
And it's really at that point where he goes from "I wish I could do that" to "I can do it" and then at the end he fully steps into "I have done it."
Just... beautiful.
One major thing:
Oogways quote he says so subtly when Shifu sends Zeng is “One often meets his destiny on the road he tries to avoid it” or something like that,
And the theme is just so fitting in not just this movie but all three movies,
Shifu sending Zeng freed Tai Lung
Po not wanting anything to do with the secret ingredient soup (or lack of interest in it) is exactly what solves the mystery of the dragon scroll,
I’m telling you I love this trilogy (although 3 didn’t feel like a part of the franchise)
It continues in 2 with Po's family being hunted down because of a prophecy of "...being defeated by a warrior of black and white." which led directly to Po becoming the Dragon Warrior and ultimately thwarting Shen's vast ambition... in accordance with the prophecy. Again.
Three wins I love:
In the opening dream, the huge horde of enemies forms the shape of a big monster
Po's style of Kung Fu is modelled on Bear Style.
The lines "I have come home, master"...."This is no longer your home, and I am no longer your master"
yes, everything out of the tortoise's mouth is pure gold.
especially...
ummm...
every word...
nothing specific. just... all of it.
Just watch Ugway talk to Po as if he is some kind of blessing, and once you watch Kung Fu Panda 3 and see that the pandas trained Ugway before they disappeared really makes the conversations between these two heart warming.

Thank you for all you do regardless,

Long time fan of your videos, but I rewatched this one and noticed you didn't really talk about the moment between Po and Shifu that happens at 7:16 where Po reminds Shifu that its Shifu's job to train Po, not Po's job to be trained, and that the failure is shared between them, that felt to me like an important piece in their relationship that leads into the next few scenes where Shifu changes his teaching style to match Po's learning style. Idk, random thought I felt like sharing, I love your videos! Keep up the wonderful work!
1:38
After this scene, when Shifu tells the Five what they need to improve on (tigress needs more ferocity etc), they're all qualities that Tai lung has, which are shown in the movie
I love it when you give a point when he says "noodles don't noodles" without even explaining since it's so abvious that it deserves a point..
“We’re so dead... so very very dead”
*optimism*

Love how much of his dreams become reality to Po.
That part becomes one of the first moves he does when fighting in the second movie.
Really shows how he can keep being so optimistic, his dreams have come true in the best ways possible,
0:42 - 0:47: Are we not going to talk about the foreshadowing to Kai's future appearance in Kung Fu Panda 3?
Speaking of which, when do we get to Kung Fu Panda 3?
